What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Sometimes I get a really good quote in.

“Pointing out that AI is prone to giving ICE bad information is missing the entire point of ICE,” EFF’s Eva Galperin told Rolling Stone. “They don’t care if the information they have is good.”

one thing that gets very tempting in this model is just supporting "host-local" components written in records that have slots and xpath transformations or whatever and don't require any remote calls. but this feels like a bad path to push into. could be a third party thing too

so list component output is cached, individual items' output is cached, under the hood their hydration could've hit shared caches or local indexes or non-atproto and/or private data (in which case not cacheable)

❝“Free speech culture” becomes bad and unserious when it starts telling us that speech is morally neutral, that we should not make value judgments against it, and that there is no moral component to promoting it. I am committed to the defense of the legal right to speak, but the defense of speech does not require us to refrain from speaking frankly about moral truths.

Giving Wax [a bigot] a platform to be a bigot is morally distinguishable from saying she should be free to be a bigot. “The only immoral thing you can say is that someone else’s speech is immoral” is not an ethos worthy of respect.❞

so i'm kind of following a more rsc-like model where each distributed piece is responsible for hydrating what it needs. so outputs can be cached, sort of like old school cached partials in php but between all users. avoids expensive recompute that's specifically for concrete uis (like skircles)

This video of constructing a trance track from scratch in a weird computer music editor (called Strudel) is absolutely entrancing to me. The result is impressive, the tool is impressive, and Switch Angel's clear mastery of the tool is especially impressive.

Once again noticing that LLMs that write code often get a person’s name and are described as partners, but AI SREs are generally named “AI SRE” and they are there to make sure nobody’s got to stop to do that lowly unproductive work.

The Oxford Handbook of Cultural Neuroscience, 2016

This Handbook examines disparities in public health by highlighting recent theoretical and methodological advances in cultural neuroscience. It traces the interactions of cultural, biological, and environmental factors that create adverse physical and mental health conditions among populations, and investigates how the policies of cultural and governmental institutions influence such outcomes.

In addition to providing an overview of the current research, chapters demonstrate how a cultural neuroscience approach to the study of the mind, brain, and behavior can help stabilize the quality of health of societies at large. The volume will appeal especially to graduate students and professional scholars working in psychology and population genetics. The Oxford Handbook of Cultural Neuroscience represents the first collection of scholarly contributions from the International Cultural Neuroscience Consortium (ICNC), an interdisciplinary group of scholars from epidemiology, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, genetics, and psychiatry dedicated to advancing an understanding of culture and health using theory and methods from cultural neuroscience. The Handbook is intended to introduce future generations of scholars to foundations in cultural neuroscience, and to equip them to address the grand challenges in global mental health in the twenty-first century.
