James Van Der Beek Dies: ‘Dawson’s Creek’ & ‘Varsity Blues’ Star Who Battled Cancer Was 48

James Van Der Beek, who played the titular Dawson Leery on Kevin Williamson’s WB hit Dawson’s Creek and also starred in Varsity Blues, The Rules of Attraction and other films and TV shows, died Wednesday after a long battle with colorectal cancer. He was 48. His family confirmed the news on social media.

Van Der Beek had revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2024.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the family wrote on Instagram. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Bud Cort, ‘Harold and Maude’ Star, Dies at 77

Bud Cort, who personified the role of Harold in the 1971 Hal Ashby classic “Harold and Maude,” died Wednesday in Connecticut after a long illness. He was 77.

His longtime friend Dorian Hannaway reported his death.

Cort also starred in Robert Altman’s “Brewster McCloud” and had roles in numerous other films and TV shows.

In “Harold and Maude,” which became a beloved and enduring cult classic despite a rocky start at the box office, Cort played a 20-year old man obsessed by thoughts of suicide whose life changes when he meets Maude, a 79-year-old Holocaust survivor played by Ruth Gordon.

Born Walter Edward Cox in Rye, N.Y., he changed his name to avoid confusion with character actor Wally Cox. He went to school in New Rochelle, N.Y. and enjoyed going to Broadway shows.

Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz Officially Set For Uni’s Next ‘Mummy’ Movie From Radio Silence; Pic Hits Theaters Early Summer 2028

Oscar winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are coming back to Universal’s The Mummy franchise, the next installment set for May 19, 2028. Uni had the date on hold for an event film. There are no other wide entries booked on that date.

We told you in November they were in talks to star in the Radio Silence directed movie off David Coggeshall’s screenplay, that story under wraps. Weisz starred in the first two Mummy movies, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, while Fraser headlined the first three — Mummy, Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the film. The Mummy brings Radio Silence back in business with Universal, the duo having directed the vampire movie, Abigail.

Netflix Is Filming ‘Stranger Things’ on Broadway for Streaming Release

The Broadway production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow is being filmed this week.

The producers of the Broadway show, Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions, are filming the stage production with the intent of releasing it in the future, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

No timeline or release schedule has yet been set, but the goal was to capture the original Broadway cast before they depart the production on March 29.

The production cancelled performances from Feb. 10 through Feb. 14 to allow for filming. Public performances are set to resume Feb. 15.

The full original Broadway cast, led by Tony nominee Louis McCartney, who plays Henry Creel, will depart the production in March. A new cast, including Victor de Paula Rocha as Henry Creel, Ayana Cymone as Patty Newby, Shea Grant as Joyce Maldonado, Juan Carlos as Bob Newby and Matthew Erick White as James Hopper, Jr. will take over at that time.

Mike Flanagan Set To Adapt Stephen King’s The Mist For Warner Bros.

Having already successfully helmed adaptations of Stephen King's Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life Of Chuck, with Carrie and The Dark Tower TV series still on their way, Mike Flanagan could've been forgiven for deciding to bail on further fresh takes on the Master of Horror's corpus. But a chance to deliver a new version of one of King's greatest novellas, adapted once before by the great Frank Darabont? Well, that really would be The Mist opportunity of a lifetime. And so it is that Deadline is reporting Flanagan is tackling a new The Mist movie for Warner Bros.
