Gomes and colleagues show that astrocytes carrying the glaucoma-associated OPTN(E50K) mutation exhibit a diseased phenotype including autophagy disfunction and lack of neurosupportive functions. Results showed that OPTN(E50K) astrocytes induce a neurodegenerative phenotype in RGCs characterized by morphological and functional deficits.
