Confessions of a Test Manager

Photo by Zacqueline Baldwin on Unsplash

Imagine a software application created with input from a diverse cross-section of stakeholders that is easy to access and all users needs are respected and valued equally. All platforms should be like this. Sadly this is not the case and there are challenges faced by underrepresented groups.

Inclusion is a global issue. Unconscious bias when designing systems can result in user requirements not being considered based on people on the project team. How can you persuade broader group of people to use your application if you’re not catering for their gender identity or ethnicity needs?

How Do We Practice Inclusion?

When designing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) into our platforms, we must review the concerns of different groups and find solutions to incorporate inclusivity into user experiences.

Things work better when we design for accessibility from the outset. Who is the system for? Developers should speak to these people during the early stages of product design to analyse what’s working, what’s not, and what we need to improve.

We must collaborate to make technology easier for everyone. Leveraging marginalized people’s knowledge, skills, and experiences can help build more accessible technology. To do this, we should ALL be included in designing, developing and testing it.

Consider opportunities for projects led by people from different backgrounds in underrepresented groups, including ethnicity, gender and those with neurodiversity and physical disabilities.

We must embed inclusion in our culture, so technology works for all users. Considering the challenges below early, will be cheaper than retrofitting fixes after product launch.

Disabilities

There are 1.2 billion people with disabilities. They exist across all geographical, educational and socioeconomic areas and collectively, they make up the largest minority. Disabled populations were some of the earliest adopters of virtual reality (VR) headsets. Wheelchair users can use VR headsets in static mode or set them to react if the wheelchair moves. Many users say the experience offers them a great sense of freedom and even pain relief. By considering their additional requirements when designing systems, we can empower differently-abled people to operate on an equal footing with everyone else.

Some barriers users experience:

Missing alt text descriptions on images

Ambiguous link text

Time-outs that can’t be controlled

Unclear controls

Difficulty discriminating some colour saturation and contrasts

Becoming overloaded by information

Understanding the order and meaning of words

Font sizes and line spacing

Magnification

Page structure

Blinking and flashing screen

Ask yourself, “How can my platform work for the visually impaired, dyslexic or anyone unable to control a mouse? What can I do to help marginalised voices?”

Colour Blindness

4.5% of people worldwide are colour blind. This affects more men than women.

I worked on a project with on screen coloured instruction buttons; red = cancel and green = submit. To anyone who is Red/green colour blind, both these colours appear the same.

Developers are never happy when testers tell them their “baby is ugly.” The lesson learned; get involved earlier in the development lifecycle to see mock ups of the design. Feedback on “cosmetic” usability bugs is more likely to be taken onboard before the final system is delivered to testing.

Colours on the outer vision wheel seen by people with colour blindness against the normal vision wheel.

It’s not only software being built that needs to take into account diversity; it’s everything we do. For example, managers often love to use Red/Amber/Green (RAG) status reporting.

Typical RAG Status Report

A senior stakeholder on my project was red/green colour blind. The red and green circles beside the bullet points both appeared grey/brown in his eyes. To overcome this, we added a letter R, A or G inside each circle so he could see which parts of the project were at risk of being late.

Affordability

Blockchain technology will enable us to connect to powerful applications worldwide. However, to do this effectively, access to reliable, high-speed broadband is essential. This can be a challenge to users who can’t afford it or live in a remote area with poor internet access.

Many applications are only supported on specific devices and support may be limited to the 3 most recent versions of the operating system. Not all users can afford the latest devices. Applications should be interoperable allowing people to engage using an older PC, tablet or smartphone.

Gender

Women are 50% of the population. However, they are still an underrepresented group. Women were invited to a round-table discussing ways to encourage more women to use a particular Metaverse virtual world. When accessing the environment, the only avatar available was a default white male. The product owner wanted more women users but didn’t see creating more avatars as a priority. Imagine a global group of women around a virtual table all looking like white males!

Early Virtual Reality (VR) headsets had a non-adjustable inner-pupillary distance. Women generally have smaller heads than men so their eyes are closer. They experienced simulation sickness while wearing a VR headset. Like wearing glasses with the wrong prescription.

Globalisation

Consider different cultural norms. For example, VR users in Nigeria have reported that the straps of their Oculus Go headset snapped after a short time. Unfortunately, the designers didn’t consider large Afro hairstyles during the hardware design.

Designers need to speak to people from diverse communities to support the co-design of extended reality (XR) devices so that it works for everyone out of the box. Like speech to text on smartphones.

To be truly global and eliminate the need to be multilingual, platforms should enable people to communicate in their own language. Controls should be written in ‘plain English’ to ease translation into other languages. Word order and meaning of words should also be clear, in line with accessibility guidelines.

Platforms should include tools to translate a user’s words into the preferred language of other users they are communicating with.

Digital Literacy

Support should be provided when onboarding people to your application by designing clear user guidance and training material.

Beyond basic accessibility, systems should be fair and just, ensuring we make the same opportunities available to allow everyone to realize their full potential.

The requirements of the most marginalized groups need to be heard during the early stages of product design. Testers involvement in those early stages is crucial to highlight how the technology can be used to empower a broader group of people.

Conclusion

Embedding diversity and inclusion into our culture at workforce and board level in a socially responsible manner improves the product and services for all users. This is the primary goal of good design and leads to more revenue and higher profits.

Commit to fostering a diverse workplace and provide equal opportunities for people to be part of design discussions and contribute to project success regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or neurodiversity.

It’s better to think about these rules now, before regulation, to avoid penalties for non-compliance.

I will leave you with this thought… Testers have the power to springboard the success of applications. For everyone to thrive, it’s essential that we acknowledge our differences and respect each other. For the greater good of society, let’s create well-designed, inclusive, and accessible applications and give all users the experience they deserve.

About the Author

Charmaine Short is a Senior Test Manager and has over 25 years of experience in IT and financial services.

She regularly speaks at conferences and on podcasts about blockchain testing and AI.

If you found this interesting, follow me on Medium, and if you want more, subscribe here to receive more testing confessions.

With the rise of AI, people can apply for multiple vacancies with a single click. This results in hundreds of people applying for every vacancy. If you are fortunate enough to reach the interview stage, well done! All you have to do is practice your interview questions with a friend or in front of a mirror and the job is yours, right?

A word of caution. A great resume, gets your foot in the door to sit opposite an interviewer. Then the real challenge is the all important interview process. You may be technically competent to do the job. So are the other candidates who make it to this stage.

In my time as an IT Manager, I have interviewed hundreds of candidates from apprentices to senior managers. Some are a great fit for the role. Others, unfortunately, are not.

You may give well rehearsed answers and think you’ve done enough to impress. However, the little things you do and say during an interview count more than you can imagine.

I have a confession. Interviewers should not be biased when choosing the right candidate for the job, but interviewers, (including myself) are only human. Here are some interview blunders that you should avoid to give the interviewer the best overall impression.

1. First impressions

Once when I was recruiting for an IT role, the candidate apologised at the start of the interview for forgetting to put his false teeth in. He explained that he could have gone home for them, but had decided not to as he thought being late would give a bad impression. In the candidate’s defence, by continuing his journey to the interview, he did demonstrate his commitment to landing the job. However, I spent the whole interview cringing. I couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying for looking at his mouth every time he answered a question. Make sure you have everything you need before starting your journey to the interview.

2. Dress Appropriately

An interviewee turned up wearing jeans. He apologised explaining that he’d taken a half day off work and didn’t want his boss to get suspicious if he wore trousers that day.

Don’t wear jeans to an interview! Even if you know people who work there regularly wear jeans.

Dressing more formally shows you’re serious about the role, and appreciate the need to look professional when representing an employer in some way. Whereas jeans can be interpreted as a lack of effort.

For men, a suit and tie are standard to complete the interview look. Keep ties either plain or very simply patterned. I once interviewed someone for a management role who was wearing a black satin shirt and piano tie. Avoid anything that could be described as ‘novelty.’

Novelty Tie

3. Manners

I once went to collect a candidate from reception, he was on his mobile. He shook my hand and started walking with me to the interview room, but continued his phone conversation. During the interview he wanted to draw a diagram to answer a question, but didn’t have a pen so had to borrow mine. He continued holding my pen throughout the interview and I had to ask for it back.

After interview he wanted me to show him where a particular employee he knew sat in the office so he could talk to him. I knew my team member was working on a project with an imminent deadline and should not be distracted, so said he was not available. I walked the candidate back to reception. On my way back to the office, I passed the team member in question heading towards reception. The candidate had ignored my comments and phoned the employee as soon as I said goodbye. Don’t ignore what your interviewer tells you.

Another candidate answered 3 calls, from the recruiter asking how she got on at the interview, during the interview! Switch your phone off.

4. Awkward Answers

As an equal opportunities employer, I once interviewed a partially sighted candidate for an analytical role. He was staring intently at a test question paper on the desk and said he could see the paper but needed magnifying equipment to read the questions. To assist him I lifted the paper off the desk and started reading the questions aloud. Instead of looking up, he kept staring at the desk where the piece of paper had previously been. If you need special assistance or equipment for an interview, let the hiring manager know and bring the equipment with you.

Another candidate was a former Mastermind contestant so was clearly an intelligent person. I asked the question, if he was given a blank piece of paper how he would approach testing a project. His answer, “I don’t like blank pieces of paper.”

Candidates at the early stage of their career also give bad answers. Like the school leaver who when asked about his biggest weakness said in all seriousness, “I don’t have any.” Don’t be arrogant.

Another candidate was very nervous and excitable. When asked how he would deal with a certain project challenge said, “Probably stab someone with a knife!” He then immediately said he was only joking. If you’re going to make a joke, avoid saying anything that makes you sound like a psychopath.

5. Timing

Then there’s being late. Anyone who is late, no matter the reason, is not getting the job. Challenges happen; traffic, public transport etc. Allow extra time to ensure you are on time. If some black swan event beyond your control happens and you know it will make you late, phone and explain rather than keeping your interviewers waiting. This gives an opportunity to explain and shows respect for their time. In extenuating circumstances they may be able to reschedule.

If you are early, great! But not too early. This is disruptive for the interviewer as they may be in the middle of another interview. One candidate turned up 45 minutes before the interview. It was a shared building and the front desk had only a security guard and an elevator, no seating area. In addition there was no public waiting area in the office. For security reasons, it was not appropriate for the candidate to wait in the office, as they may overhear confidential conversations. I sent them to the nearest coffee shop and asked them to come back at the scheduled time.

Summary

A final story happened to my HR colleague. After an interview she walked the candidate to the door. He asked if she’d like to go out with him for a drink. Don’t hit on the interviewer!

Now you know what NOT to do if you’re serious about getting a job. By presenting yourself confidently and engaging thoughtfully, you can take control of the interview process and set yourself apart from the competition.

Wishing you the best of luck with your next interview. The job market is competitive, but being mindful of what to avoid during a interview, you can land your dream role!

About the Author

Charmaine Short is a Test Manager with over 20 years of experience in testing, IT and financial services.

She is a regular speaker at conferences and on podcasts about blockchain.

Subscribe here to receive more testing confessions.

Glimpse Into The World Of An NFT Testing Project – Confessions of a Test Manager

Lost Paradigms Non-Fungible Token

Introduction

There are a growing number of use cases for organisations to adopt blockchain technology. All blockchain implementations need testing! I am an NFT fan; not the NFT that testers automatically think of… Non-Fungible Tokens. Not to be confused with Non-Functional Testing.

This is the account of testing for a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) art project called Lost Paradigms including considerations and challenges encountered when testing on the Ethereum blockchain.

How The Project Started

A group of digital art enthusiasts who had a shared passion for artist Josie Bellini’s CyberBrokers NFT collectibles project, met online during a community call and decided to create a spin off project. A small team was assembled including artists, developers, project lead and marketing from the UK, USA and Europe. No one mentioned the need for testing! The team members didn’t know each others real names, exact location or what each other looked like. Its common in the web3 community for people to use pseudonyms and avatars to protect their identity and personal data. The marketing person was known by the name Etta Tottie. Whilst assigned to handle marketing, she also anticipated a need for testing down the line.

Etta Tottie — Blockchain Tester

As the project progressed, the artists shared their work. It was a generative art project so some outputs were better than others. With over 90 million possible combinations, vehicles were randomly inserted in unusual places throughout the artwork e.g. boats on top of cars.

Test Scope

The scope was to test NFT collectors could ‘mint’ (create digital assets) NFT artworks on the project website via a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. To accomplish this, it was essential to ensure the application worked as designed and interacted with the blockchain in a trustless manner. The core testing included:

Functional testing — To evaluate the website and smart contract.

API testing — To ensure interaction between applications in the blockchain ecosystem were formatted and handled correctly.

Non-Functional testing — To identify performance bottlenecks, accessibility, and user experience issues in the website that required fine-tuning.

Test Approach — Early & Often

To minimise the number of defects found later in the software development life cycle, the project adopted Agile methods using an iterative approach and tested as early as possible.

Test Results

One of the advantages of testing on the blockchain was that all results were stored using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) files stored on IPFS (inter planetary file system) and were publicly accessible. Another benefit was that as blockchain transactions are immutable, this means that the evidence can never be accidentally erased.

Test Entry Criteria

Test Environments

The Ethereum Virtual Machine is a simulated global computer running in parallel to the Ethereum blockchain. It includes various testnets:

Zhejiang — The first testnet that trials the code for Ethereum upgrades. Only Ethereum’s core developers access this environment.

Sepolia — The testnet where developers release changes before an upgrade.

Goerli — The final public testnet environment used for project testing and dress rehearsals.

Digital Wallet

To mint a new NFT on the blockchain, collectors had to connect their cryptocurrency wallet to the website.

The MetaMask wallet which supports digital asset transactions (cryptocurrency and NFTs) on multiple blockchains is a popular choice for NFT and crypto fans as it offers easy access to testnets.

MetaMask Wallet Testnets

Before testing, it was necessary to load free Ether (ETH) cryptocurrency tokens from the testnet faucet at https://goerlifaucet.com/ and deposit them in the crypto wallet.

In live, the user wallet would be on the Ethereum Mainnet. However, it was possible to simulate transactions on the Goerli test network by executing smart contracts such as the ERC-20 Standard for Ether cryptocurrency and the ERC-721 Standard for NFTs. For more info on Ethereum Standards see https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/standards/tokens/.

Specific Considerations for Testnets

Load — New blocks to hold transactions were created approximately every 12 minutes. As transaction load on the blockchain increased, the speed of verifying the transactions in the block dropped. This made it difficult to scale the solution.

Data — It was important to agree how much data about the art should be stored on the blockchain, as more data could impact performance.

Security — The user wallet’s identity and entitlements were determined by multiple layers of security levels.

Data corruption — As blockchain is an immutable, append-only database, once a transaction was entered in the database, the records could not be modified or rolled back because they were linked to all subsequent transaction records. To fix transaction issues, a new block must be added.

Integration — Of the end to end business process to the blockchain processing.

Website Testing

Testing the user interface on the minting website was similar to testing a regular website. Business rules included:

Cost per NFT 0.0333 ETH (~$50)

Maximum of 10 NFTs per wallet

If the wallet address held 1 or more CyberBrokers NFTs, it was automatically on the ‘Allow List’ and could mint 1 NFT free + up to 9 paid NFTs at a reduced price of 0.0222 ETH (~$40) each

Minting was open for 7 days, then the smart contract closed the minting forever.

The artwork was related to a dystopian cyberpunk world 250 years in the future where everyone has relocated to the Metaverse. The website was designed to give the impression that the user was in cockpit of a futuristic vehicle. As a result, the graphics were dark and gloomy (think Bladerunner 2049). The layout was challenging as the website resembled a games console with scroll bars on the left and right side of windows rather than orderly dropdown menus. For this reason, it was crucial to include usability and accessibility testing.

Lost Paradigms Website — About Page

Smart Contract Testing

Then came the fun part. Minting an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. One scheduling complication was that the Ethereum blockchain itself was being tested to transition from a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to a more environmentally friendly Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanism requiring significantly less energy to process transactions. The main upgrade was planned to take place at a specific block number but the exact date was unknown. So although the project testing was shifting left to get ahead, everything would need to be retested after the Ethereum upgrade.

Project Launch

When the project went live, a 24-hour window was given to 1000 wallets on an “Allow List” to mint their NFTs. This helped spread the load of users trying to access the contract and avoided a spike in gas fees if 10000 fans had all attempted to mint at the launch.

The team received positive feedback after the first 2 hours, that the minting experience was smooth. This gave confidence to roll out public minting after 24 hours. After 7 days, minting closed as planned.

Website — Home Page

Lessons Learned

Domain Name

The site domain name was one issue that went unnoticed throughout testing. As is common with decentralised projects, it ended in .xyz. After launch, the team realised that the URL appeared as suspicious on Norton’s website checker site as it had not been verified on the safe list. This may have impacted people’s decision to visit the website.

Smart Contracts

The team debated whether to use an updatable or closed smart contract. An updatable contract had the benefit of allowing for the future programming of additional features, such as 3D upgrades to the artwork. Whilst this option gave more flexibility, people are wary of contracts where the issuer can alter the terms retrospectively. Consequently, the group chose to use a closed contract. In retrospect, with an updatable smart contract, it would have been possible to reopen minting at a future date once the website was verified as safe on the Norton site.

Summary

Blockchain is an emerging technology that has the potential to disrupt several industries including payments and testing. See below to learn more about blockchain and the skills required for blockchain testing:

Blockchain Testing Tools

Ethereum Tester — Includes tools to facilitate both app development and testing. Ethereum Tester can be used for API, web3 integration, backend and smart contracts testing.

Ganache Tool — Designed to test Ethereum contracts locally. It creates a simulated blockchain that allows the test team to utilise several accounts for testing.

Programming Languages

Web3 development languages such as JavaScript, C++ and Python are useful for front-end and backend systems.

An understanding of smart contract programming languages are also essential for web3 development/test teams.

Solidity — Feature rich language

Viper — Follows the syntax of Python and focuses on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Compared to Solidity, its feature set is more limited. However, because there are fewer points of weakness, it offers superior security.

About the Author

Charmaine Short is a Test Manager with over 20 years of experience in test management, IT and financial services.

In 2020, Charmaine co-founded a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called Women of Crypto Art (WOCA) to put art on the blockchain as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Later, she established the Ettaverse Web3 Consultancy offering coaching and testing strategies to assist organisations in adopting blockchain technology.

She regularly speaks at conferences and on podcasts about blockchain.

Sources

https://qualitestgroup.com/insights/white-paper/testing-blockchain/ https://blog.logrocket.com/complete-guide-blockchain-testing/

Finding Investors To Finance Your Web3 Project

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

The landscape is changing when it comes to pre-seed investment. Web3 brings new opportunities to invest and new processes. In addition to traditional investments, it is now possible to find financing options through decentralized organizations.

Crowdfunding platforms are gaining popularity. You can also utilize traditional funding and merge that into the web3 funds to get the best funding combination for your needs.

There is a unique opportunity for businesses to sell digital products that their communities enjoy in a meaningful way.

How do you go about obtaining funding?

There are several ways to get seed funding for a web3 project, including:

Angel investors: High-net-worth individuals who invest their own money in startups. They can provide seed funding in exchange for equity in the company. They are experienced entrepreneurs or business leaders looking for opportunities to invest in early-stage companies. To get angel investors to fund your web3 project, you must present a compelling business plan demonstrating the potential for growth and profitability. This should clearly describe your product or service, your target market and your competitive advantage.

Investor Challenges

Some unique challenges and opportunities come with marketing and securing investment for web3 projects.

Investors are interested in investing in web3 projects but still have traditional concerns. They’re worried about their vulnerability or the risk of being scammed. They want to see the utility of your product that may still be in the research and development stages as you may not have finished creating yet.

Tips to attract angel investors

Network, Network, Network: Attend industry events, meetups, and conferences to connect with potential angel investors.

Build a strong team: Angel investors are more likely to invest in a team with a proven track record of success.

Have a clear value proposition: Make sure your business model is clear and that you can clearly articulate the value your product or service provides customers.

Show traction: If your project already has some traction, such as users or revenue, it will be more attractive to angel investors.

Be prepared to give equity: Angel investors typically expect to receive equity in the company in exchange for their investment.

Keep in mind that getting funding from angel investors can be a long process. It’s important to be persistent and not to get discouraged.

Additionally, some angel investors have a specific interest in web3 or blockchain projects. You can focus on those investors, by searching for web3 or blockchain-focused angel investor groups or individuals.

Incubators and accelerators: Provide funding, mentorship, and resources to help startups grow. Many focus on web3 and blockchain technology.

Crowdfunding: A way for entrepreneurs to raise funds from a large number of people, typically via the internet.

Grants: Some organizations and government agencies offer grants to startups working on innovative projects.

Venture Capital: Firms that invest in startups with high growth potential in exchange for equity.

Getting funding for a web3 project can be challenging due to the lack of regulation and the relatively early stage of the technology. Networking and building relationships with potential investors is key to getting seed funding for a web3 project.

Once you’ve identified investors, then what?

Nailing your marketing plan is essential for any investor because your investor is concerned with how they will get their money back!

Having a marketing plan and an idea of how it’s going to be executed, is the first piece of information any investor wants — how do you plan to sell the products, and how are we making money?

You have an idea e.g. an NFT that you want to sell — you incorporate this in a business plan and you’re going to utilize your NFT to bring additional value to whatever you’re selling (by doing the market research on whatever value you are planning to add).

Market research should be outlined in a good marketing strategy to help investors evaluate your business and growth potential. The strategy should include the ideas behind how you plan to make this project successful.

In web3 and metaverse and AI, many ideas are still in research and development — it might be difficult for investors to imagine. If you present your strategy and plan at the beginning — you’ll have a head start to help investors get on board.

Pitch Deck

Once you have the strategy, you need a good pitch deck for the investor. Presenting your Business outline your objectives, your goals, and your Milestones.

Do your homework on investors — find investors Angel Investors who invest in web3 specifically. Tailor your pitch depending on how progressive each investor is. A different mindset is needed in web3 environments. Find investors who also have that mindset or you’ll end up educating them on the narratives around decentralization.

Investors will evaluate the potential value and growth of a web 3 project before investing.

There are five key factors to communicate your vision and value when going through pitch decks.

Finally, know your product and be humble when given any advice or feedback from a potential investor.

We hope you enjoyed this overview report.

The Patron Saint of Crypto Artists

Foreword

One year ago, OG artist Alotta Money left us to become the Patron Saint of Crypto Artists. This article, originally published for the UNDRGRND NFT publication is being reissued to celebrate the life of an amazing artist and human being.

On Friday 4th March 2022, the NFT community shook with the announcement from that a trailblazer of the NFT art space — Alotta Money, had died after a short illness.

One month earlier, Alotta Money, known to friends and family as Phillipe, had announced that he was ill.

Tributes from artists, collectors and everyone who knew him poured out all day on Twitter, including rare archived video footage from an with Josie Bellini where his warmth and humor charmed the viewers.

Many changed their profile picture to his iconic four-eyed John Cleese in a bowler hat as a mark of respect and posted photos tenderly calling him ‘Phillipe.’

His crypto art journey began in 2018, designing for Twitter profiles for his friends. Each was more inventive than the last, and the commissions soon started piling up. These became so popular they led him to start collaborating with other artists in the emerging world of NFTs. Early work as a crypto artist focused around Bitcoin and Ethereum before carving out a unique style of surreal artworks combining nostalgic, whimsical, folly with modern twists including random gifs, memes and visual loops.

On his website, he described himself as ‘Crypto Artist, Voxels architect, Photoshop Priest, VR&AR Maximalist, NFT Machine & Most Humble Visual Orgasm Provider in the Space.’

As one of the OG NFT artists, he collaborated with 12 other artists (Blackboxdotart, Coldie, Connie Digital, Hackatao, Josie Bellini, Matt Kane, Mlibty, Rutger van der Tas, Shortcut, TwistedVacancy, VansDesign, and XCOPY) on the programmable artwork entitled First Supper.

One of his groundbreaking masterpieces, Dictatorship, is composed of many layers controlled by the artist as a master puppeteer with the ability to surprise, amuse and scare the collector with daily changes, weekly events and annual changes. Autonomous layers triggered by scripted periodical and random events make sure this street never looks the same, even when the Dictator is on vacation.

A love of architecture is also evident in his Voxel Hotel in Cryptovoxels. This was to be the venue for a giant gathering organised by friends including @theAngieTaylor , @basileus_eth and @EclecticMethod , among others celebrating his life in grand style on Saturday 5th March 2022 which would have been his 50th birthday party. Here is the invite designed by Angie Taylor.

The well-attended Metaverse send-off in memory of Alotta Money included music remixed by @EclecticMethod, dancing, story-sharing, toasts, crying and much love for the great man.

Always open to creativity and collaboration; Alotta Money had a huge capacity to work and was not afraid to work on multiple projects at once.

Here is his first silly creation with Pranksy in February 2020.

In 2021, Alotta Money and Trevor Jones collaborated to produce EthBoy, a programmatic piece ΞTHΞRΞAL 1 of 1 NFT that evolves with dynamically changing scenes based on ETH/BTC prices, gas prices, and other external variables. This drop showcased innovation in smart contracts for NFTs. ΞTHΞRΞAL was the first of ten chapters to be programmatically generated in the EthBoy journey and was purchased by renowned collector, MaxStealth. Trevor recalls his friendship with Alotta Money, ‘No one made me laugh more than him. He somehow managed to transcend all the politics right from the start and at the same time earn everyone’s love and respect. He was truly a unique individual.’

The Monty Python character in the Ministry of Silly Walks inspired Alotta’s infamous image of a four-eyed man in a bowler hat. People in the UK grew up with comedy actor John Cleese on their TV screens. He arguably invented British comedy. The absurd genius of Alotta Money’s name touched John so much that he recorded a YouTube video.

Angie Taylor, who considered Alotta Money, her favourite artist, recalls their collaboration Auld Alliance with fond memories. A homage to the alliance between their home countries France and Scotland. A celebration of the bonds between these Celtic nations and a two-fingered salute to Brexit where they champion the Jacobites and Jacobins! Saluting the revolutionaries Bonnie Prince Charlie and Joan of Arc, who inspired them to create the artwork. I have always admired Alotta Money’s groundbreaking work. I recall when he took the time to point out a small detail in the Auld Alliance artwork, he knew I would appreciate, where Scottish actor Sean Connery was depicted as a Highland hero. Connery is most famous for his role as the first 007, James Bond.

It is fitting to end at the beginning with a view of Alotta Money’s beautifully crafted Twitter header and bio that reads ‘Ah. Ah. Ah. Ah. Staying Alive. Staying Alive.’ The words of the 1977 Bee Gees song. His sense of humour stayed with him to the end.

The number of accounts followed, 888 is visually perfectly balanced. It reads the same forward, backwards and even upside down. This may seem inconsequential, but it’s in alignment with the meaning of angel number 888. Balance! The number 888 conveys that the angels and the entire universe support your life’s purpose to shine your unique light and create something of value to share with the world. It can also signify that you’ve reached a level of completion in one or more areas in life.

Trash artist Robness said it all, with these heartfelt words at the celebration of Alotta Money’s life:

‘HIS PHYSICAL FORM IS NO LONGER WITH US, BUT HIS ETERNAL WORK IS THE GIFT WE ALL HAVE NOW. R.I.P. MY GOOD FRIEND.’

The Story Continues

Since March last year, there have been various tributes to Alotta Money. One of the most notable was an Alotta Money Tribute Art Exhibition and talk arranged by Trevor Jones at the NFT.London conference in November 2022.

Artist Violet Jones with her portrait of Alotta Money and collector Charmaine Short

On the anniversary of Alotta Money’s birthday in 2023, the NFT community reconvened at the Voxel Hotel to celebrate his life, his generosity and his humor to ensure his legacy in Crypto Art history lives forever.

About Ettaverse

Ettaverse helps startups and businesses who want to use blockchain technology, with advice and strategies to make projects successful.

Contact us today for info on our web3 consultancy, coaching and marketing services.

Don’t Follow Web3 Trends, Get Ahead Of Them

Yield Farmer by CyberBrokers

Staying ahead in the world of web3 is all about knowing what comes next. If you’re looking for a way to get ahead, you’ve come to the right place. Last year saw new use cases for NFTs including music, stories, fashion and movies. Plus the rise of strong communities built through web3 virtual events, in the Metaverse. The substantial decrease in NFT volumes and prices in the bear market emphasized the need for blockchain technology to have real-world use cases. DeFi established itself as the most innovative space in crypto, building much of the industry’s cornerstone infrastructure, leaving the market eagerly awaiting further innovation.

So what’s next? Here are the most predicted trends for this year. Now is the time to position your brand ahead of trends, rather than reacting to them.

1. Product Promotion With NFTs

Product companies will become tokenized. NFTs help create value for any brand, which has become a new marketing move for large companies. Trailblazers include Nike, Adidas, McDonald’s and Taco Bell, plus luxury brands like Porsche, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. This trend can help improve the visibility of a particular product or service. With the help of NFTs, businesses will increase the demand for their goods and obtain new sources of income, for example, raising funds for charity. As more organizations start releasing NFTs, the challenge for marketers will be to do creative branding within the Metaverse. Many brands are still experimenting. It may take time for long-term strategies to come to fruition. Despite this, the potential of company NFTs in the Metaverse is a thrilling prospect for the future.

2. Global Brands

Big entertainment and lifestyle brands have dipped their toes into web3. The list includes Starbucks, TIME, Tiffany, Reddit and Warner Music. The entry of these big brands into the web3 space will drive adoption and mainstream acceptance of web3 technologies. As these companies gain experience, their approach is now more sophisticated. At first, they started selling NFTs as a product. Now they’re using NFTs as an entry point to form loyal communities and new customer relationship management (CRM) strategies to pre-empt customer expectations and engage in meaningful co-creation.

In web2, Big Tech firms owned our data and used it to market and manipulate our spending habits. This data model is broken. VR technology can capture our emotional data through our movements and reactions to online experiences. However, just because something is technically possible, is it ethical? Customers are nervous about immersing themselves in XR experiences and want assurances about the ownership, privacy and control of their online data assets. Brands need to evolve and create a new relationship with consumers and their data that reassures users about data privacy. Blockchain allows brands to embrace new data customer consent restrictions and shift from hoarding data that doesn’t benefit customers, to allowing the power and decision-making on data collection to be user controlled. This will create a more collaborative, mutually beneficial model where ‘I allow you access to my data, and in return, you give me a discount/loyalty reward.’

3. Social Applications

Decentralized social Metaverse applications are another growing DeFi area. The Metaverse is a highly anticipated $5 trillion market, with various web3 builders providing innovation on individual pieces of the puzzle. Product innovators Yuga Labs and The Sandbox, are leading the web3 space. Facebook rebranded itself to Meta, and Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard.

Social media is a lifeline in an atmosphere of marketing turmoil. Trends such as online subscription models, OnlyFans and AI will have a huge impact on influencer marketing. If well executed, these business models can set you up for social success this year and beyond.

However, there’s rebranding work to be done! Web3 UX and terminology need to be simplified. There should be less use of the term ‘NFT’ and more descriptions of what a digital asset is for, such Reddit’s successful collectible avatars launch that didn’t mention the word NFT.

4. Identity

The distribution and development of standards such as POAP, ENS, and Soulbound tokens will help create better governance systems and introduce proof-of-personhood to the web. Soulbound Tokens are non-transferable and have utility as legal documents such as driving licences or exam qualifications.

The Metaverse is a great ‘leveller’ where we are judged by what we do and say, not the way we look or our accent. Users are increasingly curious about “phygital” assets. Owning a physical + a digital version of an asset allows us to style our image as we want others to see us online. We will also see the rise of the digital twin, where we mimic our real-world possessions and habits in Metaverse platforms.

Gamers can play web3 games owning their Avatar skins as on-chain digital assets in their wallet that will be interoperable to use and trade across multiple platforms.

5. Infrastructure

2023 may become the breakthrough year for Ethereum scalability and lay the ground for new applications. Layer 2 (L2) networks such as Arbitrum and Optimism have gained significant market share and now handle around 50% of transactions by transferring them away from the Ethereum blockchain and adding stability to Ethereum gas fees.

Other infrastructure enhancements include base layers, wallets, on-ramps, and dApps. To increase adoption, people need the ability to pay using different blockchains or with fiat.

Web2 and web3 actors have come together to establish interoperability standards through the Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF).

Art & Money — Interview with Tom Badley

Money Grows On NFTs

Minerva, Roman Goddess of Art and Trade

Back in early 2020, the NFT community was a different place with only a handful of artists and collectors. OG NFT artist Tom Badley minted his first NFT artwork in June 2019. He was one of the first crypto artists I collected and his art will always have a place in my heart. I asked Tom a few questions about his work. Here’s what he said.

Describe your style of art

My art owes a lot to physical banknotes — their design and production. There’s a subgenre of art that appropriates physical currency — think of Warhol making screenprints of dollars etc. such as The Death of Fiat. My art is a little different; I’m working with the same processes as banknote production to produce original works of art. As a result, my art often looks like money as in the Las Parabolas banknote series from early 2020 which depicts famous champions of crypto and represents a snapshot of crypto at a certain point in time.

Las Parabolas, 1 MilliBitcoin, Elon Musk

What’s your creative process?

A lot of the focal point of my art is a portrait, and a concept comes from the portrait, usually. Drawing is the quickest way to create for me, and since I started drawing digitally in 2017, it was impossible to stop. Banknote design is quite involved, there’s a set process to go through. The effort to produce one artwork is enormous. I wish I was the kind of artist that could churn out hundreds of NFTs a week, but it would be impossible. In the case of handmade prints, I create the printing plates myself. It’s like a photographic process, so the plates are ‘developed’ by hand.

Detail from a banknote

To preserve quality and scarcity, you burnt some early NFTs. How did it feel to destroy your art?

Maybe I should feel bad because other people might enjoy the art I’ve burnt. But art is the only thing I have that doesn’t run dry. It’s a bottomless pit, so if my digital art is burnt, or my physical art is destroyed, I can just make more, better than before.

Ethereum ETH-KO-06

Phygital artworks

Making physical artwork is very important to me. I think it’s essential as an artist to offer something physical, even if you love NFTs. It adds value and gravitas to your work. Most of my physical pieces are prints. I do sell some original drawings, but it’s rare because there just aren’t that many. As well as commercially printed artworks — prints made using conventional digital printing — I also make handmade lithographs and intaglio prints. On top of that, I create prints made in collaboration with security printers — organizations that print banknotes, among other things. This means that the prints are integrated with security features found in paper money — watermarks, invisible inks, security fibres embedded in the paper, and a level of detail that you can’t get in any other form of printing — many details require magnification to see.

Brexit

Brexit was a huge deal for people in the UK that divided the nation and dominated the daily news. To mark the event, Tom created iconic Bank of Brexit animated artworks. As a bonus for collectors, he sent signed postcard-sized copies in the mail that make the art more personal and special.

Brexitarium [Recto]

There is a great sense of humour in the back of the Brexit banknote that includes a quote from a far-right pro-Brexit politician Nigel Farage, ‘If an idea is indeed sensible, it will eventually become just part of accepted wisdom.’ Six years on from the UK exiting the European Union, perhaps the idea was not so sensible.

Brexitarium [Verso]

What’s the piece you’re the most proud of? Why?

I always say that the latest work of art I make is my best because part of the fun of making is to always outdo what I did before. I have written a book, ART&MONEY. It talks specifically about money, crypto, value, NFTs, and my art. I will be releasing 10 1/1 NFTs to coincide with the release of the book, the holders of the NFTs will receive a copy of the book personalized with signed artwork inside! ART&MONEY is the product of years of research; a story of the meaning and nature of money itself, written from the unique perspective of an artist from the world of money printing.

Thoughts on the future of NFTs?

It’s impossible to talk about the future of NFTs without talking about blockchain. At this point, I believe we’re very close to witnessing the conflict between true private cryptocurrency, and centralized blockchain. Digital assets — cryptocurrency, NFTs — are theoretically anonymous, if human identities aren’t connected to wallet addresses. But the blockchain is an open ledger. If wallet addresses are tied to physical identities, then it turns the blockchain into a perfect surveillance tool. In the end, it will be easy for governments to force the use of this surveillance tool, as everyone is utterly dependent on money. Even in ‘crypto land’, everyone needs to be able to easily on and off ramp from crypto into fiat. But if digital assets can only be sold into a centralized blockchain, which discloses one’s identity and hands the government complete control over one’s spending habits, then digital assets would be ring-fenced and, for all intents and purposes, banned. This is the essence of the coming conflict.

Will private digital assets win over centralized blockchains? Yes, but I believe we will have to go through a period that will test what we think about money and value to the core.

In the end, I see NFTs playing an important role in global trade, especially as a backing for real-world commodities, in a world where staying local will be preferable to international travel and shipping. I also see NFTs, in their present form, as a testing ground for true digital barter, which will become a prominent feature of life, as we work out what money we ‘should’ be using.

Independent Currency — Satoshi Mask

Tom is available for commissions and his new book ART&MONEY will be launching on January 29th together with the release of accompanying NFTs on NiftyGateway.

Also on KnownOrigin, Blockchain Art Exchange, SuperRare, and Rarible.

Follow Tom on Twitter: @CurrencyDesign

Want to get your NFT creations in front of the right buyers?

Interview by Elliott Lee

We recently caught up with @ettaverse web3 consultant, writer, podcaster, and woman in NFTs, Charmaine Short. We spoke about her favorite dynamic NFT projects and web3 inclusivity. Here’s what she had to say👇

What attracted you to the blockchain and crypto when you first joined the field?

I believe the secret to success does not depend on being dealt a good hand in life, but in playing the cards, you do hold well. After seeing the value of my savings erode due to inflation and quantitative easing, I was excited in 2019 when I first discovered Bitcoin. I was struck by the various reasons why Bitcoin is better than fiat such as speed and transparency. But what really excited me was its limited supply. Only 21 million will ever exist! This will enable it to hold its value.

What has changed since you joined?

When I first started collecting NFTs, they were called ‘crypto art’ and the whole scene was an underground movement. Then Beeple sold an NFT for $69m and overnight everyone wanted to know about NFTs. With the potential to make big profits flipping NFTs, many new investors entered the scene as did many traditional artists. The downside of the new influx of people joining the NFT community was that the scammers also arrived.

I’ve seen bull markets where it’s easy for people to make profits trading crypto and NFTs with limited skills and no strategy. When the bear market came, many investors who failed to do their own homework were unprepared and lost everything in speculative trades. Many have now left the space.

How do you see the future of the NFT?

In the future, NFTs will be used to prove ownership of physical assets such as real estate and vehicles with smart contracts built into the purchase deals. NFTs will also be used to prove the authenticity of designer goods such as jewelry, fashion clothing, and accessories. Rolex is already using NFTs for its physical watches. NFTs will also become widely used as vouchers to give priority access for restaurant bookings and movie theatres. In the sports and entertainment industries, NFTs will be used for event ticketing. Plus, fans will have the added utility of benefits such as exclusive physical merchandise and the ability to collect the autographs of their favorite stars.

What do you think about dynamic NFTs?

Dynamic NFTs bring an exciting unknown element to NFTs. APIs can make an NFT appear differently to different viewers depending on their location in the world and local time.

Another innovative example is the Arcana Tarot NFT, which was created by WOCA in collaboration by 22 women artists and was minted on Async Art. This artwork was programmed to operate as a working tarot deck and can provide a new 3 card tarot reading every 24 hours.

Another interesting NFT is EthBoy, created in collaboration by artists Trevor Jones and Alotta Money. This artwork changes appearance depending on a variety of factors, including fluctuations in the price of ETH, Bitcoin, and ETH gas fees.

How has web3 inclusivity changed over time?

The Metaverse allows us to make minorities the majority. Web3 projects should include representatives from a diverse cross-section of society including underrepresented groups. This will ensure online experiences are inclusive and the requirements of people from all ethnicities and those with disabilities are taken into account early in the design. Let’s build an inclusive and accessible web3, where everyone is welcome and empowered to explore, learn and build as part of a like-minded community. Here is a white paper I wrote on the subject.

What do you think of women-based NFT projects?

Women-led projects and communities such as Women of Crypto Art (WOCA) @hellowoca on Twitter and World Of Women bring women together to support and promote each other. The NFT space is big enough for all these women-led groups.

WOCA’s mission statement is simple. It invites any woman — as well as anyone who is supportive of women artists, to “be seen, be heard, and be welcome” in the NFT art world.

By amplifying each other’s voices, to displaying work in purpose-made virtual exhibitions, each of the 1300+ members lend their voice, their actions, and their art toward making sure that the NFT community is a place where women’s art is as valued and valuable as their male peers.

I was recently on 2 all-female panels at NFT London and saw countless other women represented on stage. Projects like these raise awareness and break down the perception that crypto and NFTs are predominantly male communities.

How can Ettaverse help?

Ettaverse helps web3 startup’s and businesses who want to use blockchain technology, with marketing strategies to build community. It opens up a host of possibilities where all our goals, fantasies and collective ideas collide. A place that is open and accessible to everyone.

Through inspired visions and good ideals the new world should be inclusive, shared, unplanned, meaningful, and beyond any individual’s control. We dream of a limitless virtual space where our conscious mind can live happily, free of physical constraints, long after the Earth we once knew is gone.

What worlds will come from these collaborations? Will the smashing together of immersive experiences be what we expect? Or beyond our wildest dreams and greater than the sum of individual parts.

Visual storytelling helps our fantasies align and is our doorway to bringing written lore to life.

Lost Paradigms is a collection of 3333 unique generative banners visualizing scenes in a future world where everyone has been moved to Metaverse and is inspired by the lore of the CyberBrokers universe The Paradigm Lost (TPL). Each paradigm is created in meticulous detail and designed to work as backdrops across social platforms like Twitter and Discord etc. allowing you to own a unique vision of the future world. Why limit your personality on your Twitter profile with a small circle PFP, when you can also express it in a whole banner?

Enter the Lost Paradigms!

The project team are a community-led group of creatives with a passion for architecture, design, NFT art and 3D modelling.

Project lead Dot said, “I believe right now is an opportunity for we, the people to build a digital world together. That said, there is a place for high quality art that serves as attractive backdrops or scenes for blue chip PFPs and Lost Paradigms fills this gap in the market.

As Metaverse-native media and entertainment companies expand into movies, comic books or other types of media, early depictions of these worlds that can be easily displayed across different social platforms will be in demand.

The Metaverse — The Hottest Addition To Your Marketing Toolkit

Step Into The Lost Paradigms

Detail from a Lost Paradigms scene

The Metaverse is a brave new world that frees us to reinvent ourselves and design who we are, not what society decides based on appearance (gender, race, age etc.) Whether using a virtual reality headset or digital device, it opens up the ability to choose how we want to be seen and bring our ‘best self’ to the party.

What is the Metaverse?

Think of the Metaverse as the world where everything interacting is virtual except you. It’s possible to own land, avatars, buildings, art and names. Metaverse technology allows us to explore different environments, attend events, interact with people, visit aesthetically pleasing lands and even buy goods and services such as fashions and accessories. It’s a vast web3 space where individual users and businesses can flourish. Most people can’t afford property in a luxurious beachfront location or a residence surrounded by sizable grounds. So, being early and claiming ownership of Metaverse real-estate is the equivalent of a virtual gold rush.

Is the Metaverse a single entity?

There are various definitions. In physics, the term Multiverse is used to describe the possibility of multiple universes taking place simultaneously in our own universe. Not necessarily parallel universes, where exact copies of you are acting out a multitude of options, but rather or a combination of Mini-verses that make up a universe where the laws of physics or quantum mechanics do not work under the same rules that govern our universe.

Take the concept of multiple universes and imagine a brave new world with communities where rules and guidelines are enforced differently. The importance of community involvement is key to ensuring we all get along.

The fantastic thing about the Metaverse is the digital assets we can own and how we display them. NFT real-estate is not just another collectible form of business. It reflects our growing faith in virtual communities and their distinctive cultures. Plots of land in virtual worlds such as the Sandbox, Decentraland and Worldwide Webb are becoming a popular form of ownership, like any real-world purchase. These enable us to express our style without the boundaries of the physical world.

The Metaverse is a portal to experience technology in a new way. An opportunity, to leave the biases in our current web2 lives at the door and choose not take them into the virtual world. This topic is discussed in detail in the White Paper Designing Diversity and Inclusivity in the Metaverse.

Mini-verses

Tony Parisi defined the rules of the Metaverse. Rule number one ‘There is only one Metaverse.’ However, web3 enthusiasts are planting flags and building several Mini-verses or platforms on the Ethereum, EOS and Solana blockchains where people can chat and play depending on their preferred realities. These include apartments and stores to display NFTs showcasing undiscovered art and offering NFT creators and collectors places to hang out and discuss the latest drops or trends in the NFT Marketplace.

Many businesses such as are Walmart are interested in growing relationships with their customers in the Metaverse to add utility to their traditional business. The recent Fashion Week in Decentraland also attracted brands from the world of luxury and fashion. These are evidence of the importance of the NFT ecosystem in the retail industry!

For those destined to party in the Metaverse, virtual gallery exhibitions, and gatherings take place in sizable virtual galleries such as the Ettaverse NFT Art Gallery in the Spatial Metaverse. The gallery supports NFT artists and helps connect collectors to a network of curated artists where everyone in the community is welcome 24x7.

Ettaverse NFT Gallery

Metaverse galleries also provide valuable exposure to underappreciated NFT artists. Enabling their work to be seen by a broader audience of collectors worldwide.

Art by Miss AL Simpson, Katy Arrington, Angie Taylor, Ocular Delusion

Galleries can also become museums to display historically import NFTs from the early years of blockchain such as the 2017 Ethereum collection by Dada.

OG collections by Dada Creeps & Weirdos and Robness

Visions Of The Future Through Stories

The latest Ettaverse gallery exhibition showcases the Lost Paradigms collection of 3333 generative NFTs. Lost Paradigms is a CyberBrokers community-fund project about the immersive digital world inspired by CyberBrokers lore. The community fund provides financial support for inspiring community-led projects that expand and bring value to the CyberBrokers universe through art, writing, and/or technology. Lost Paradigms is supported by the CyberBrokers Community Fund, and at the same time is an independent project that does not represent CyberBrokers.

Lost Paradigms Twitter banner as imagined from lore

Each NFT, created by digital artists Visual_Swim and Gabrielis Online tells the story of scenes from the lore of the Cyberbrokers’ universe; a future world where everyone has been moved to Metaverse. The gallery exhibits a selection of generative scenes, vehicles and machines featured in the artworks. The whole collection is available to view and buy on OpenSea.

Lost Paradigms Collection and 3D models

Each paradigm scene is designed to display perfectly as a Twitter banner, allowing collectors to own a unique vision of the future world. The gallery also has a portal toenter a dedicated Lost Paradigms exhibition in Spatial.

Lost Paradigms Experience

Metaverse Galleries are also an important venue to meet artists, collectors, hold talks about NFTs and of course, collect!

In addition to seasonal exhibitions, Metaverse galleries are also a great place to house a permanent collection. Such as the blue chip NFTs stored in the Ettaverse vault.

Trevor Jones vault

People are spatial beings. We enjoy live events like concerts, sports and movies. As the Metaverse evolves and immersive tools become more accessible, our virtual reality gatherings will become more common. 5G / 6G will boost blockchain speed and scalability, enabling us to connect to more Defi applications. VR headsets will become more sophisticated with better graphics, more processing power, and advances in interoperability will seamlessly move us between virtual worlds. Enabling brands to have a presence and offer virtual products and services to existing and new customers.

The future looks bright in the Metaverse. We can’t wait to see you!
