The utility of NFTs has now gone well past collectibles. Days when NFTs were trashed just as a fuzz has given way to a time when use cases of NFTs are emerging every day:

Buy, sell, and trade virtual real estate,

Verify the authenticity of certificates,

Establish digital reputations,

Sell tickets,

As in-game items,

As proof of charity donations,

Represent intellectual property ownership, and more.

However, though developers are trying to create more engaging NFT experiences, limitations of metadata constrain the utility of NFTs. Metadata lies at the core of dynamic NFTs prevalent today. Effective metadata management is key to implementing the technology to its maximum potential and future-proofing NFTs.

In this article, let us take a dive into how the metadata with multiple data sets plays a role in making NFTs dynamic and how managing metadata efficiently can help augment use cases of NFTs. For better understanding, let us begin with understanding how traits in NFT metadata influences the utility and challenges faced in single data set NFTs.

‘Traits’ in NFT metadata

Properties of NFT metadata such as name, description, traits, transaction history, date of creation, serious number, link to the hosted image, and more. Traits play an eminent role in making NFTs reflect a diverse number of ideas and situations.

Lineage Protocol helps NFTs transform their metadata. Before metadata was used to characterize immutable art traits. Now, it can represent dynamic cross-chain utility and help with cross-project integrations.

There are several types of NFT traits, such as:

Utility traits:

NFTs with utility traits give owners access to specific rights or experiences, such as virtual events or some real-world items. For instance, you having a Nike NFT might grant you access to an exclusive online meet.

Visual traits:

There are traits that influence the way an NFT appears, like color or texture. A good example of visual traits would be the NFT of a weapon in a game-changing appearance depending on triggers.

Rarity traits:

In NFTs, some particular traits might be more scarce than others. Traits could be determined by multiple factors such as eyes, background colors, or effects. For instance, in an NFT collection of cats, few cats might have an ultra-rare trait like gold fur, increasing their demand.

Combinatorial traits:

Some NFT collections bring together several traits to create an uncommon outcome. In a game, for example, one can align certain clothing and accessories to give the character a unique experience.

Challenges within single data set NFTs

Limitations of the current, static NFT metadata.

NFTs, however, suffer from a few fundamental flaws. For instance, all metadata for an NFT collection is a single set of data, which creates a problem in cross-project integration. Moreover, since their emergence, NFTs have been static for the most part, whether they are JPEG or videos, which means they cannot evolve with time. This is a severe limitation, which hampers the adoption of the technology.

Gas fees are another problem that hinders assimilation of the technology in the mainstream. NFTs depend on smart contracts for a change in metadata, which means the user has to pay the gas fee. If the changes are done off-chain, it helps set aside the gas fee but then, we have to deal with centralization, resulting in a lack of transparency.

The absence of a distributed ledger beneath metadata makes tracking any updates/changes to the data set hard. It means the metadata could be changed without the NFT owner in the loop.

How Lineage Protocol future-proofs your NFTs

Lineage Protocol helps you to tide over the challenges, making the experience dynamic for users, and expanding the use cases. This is achieved by powering metadata changes to create dynamic NFTs, quite unlike conventional blockchain networks that require validation of smart contracts. The outcome is a lighter and quicker network, increasing the efficiency of the whole set-up.

As a consensus-driven, peer-to-peer project backed with database-like storage capabilities, Lineage Protocol has the ability to transform the way NFT ecosystem functions. The protocol brings in a decentralized metadata management system, making all aspects transparent. Permissionless metadata changes make the utility of NFTs limitless.

One can view each NFT state change in Lineage Explorer, termed the ‘Etherscan for NFTs.’ Every game, DAO, ticketing system, or any other project using the current dynamic or static NFT standard can now expand.

Dynamic NFTs based on real-world triggers

Meta integrated with NFTs with proper codes and scripts create dynamic NFTs based on real-world triggers. These NFTs have programmable features making them useful across industries, turning them into valuable assets.

Lineage Protocol achieves this without affecting the original tokenUri which means dynamism is achieved without smart contract interaction. For instance, an NFT of a warrior in a game might have an attribute that increases when the warrior performs well in a fight and decreases when it loses. The metadata reflects all the previous wins and losses, along with the current status.

Metadata powered by Lineage Protocol enables NFTs to communicate with digital assets across different blockchains without using bridges, which helps developers avoid associated vulnerabilities. Interoperability facilitates better experiences for all stakeholders.

Multiple data sets

Thanks to Lineage Protocol, there are no restrictions on the NFTs regarding the number of data sets. This allows NFT collection owners to delegate permissions for other projects to create new data sets for integration, tremendously boosting interoperability between NFT projects.

Multiple data sets facilitate collaborative NFTs, enabling each creator to own their own particular data set. The outcome is an NFT where different creators own various parts of the asset.

Implementing traits in NFTs via metadata

Metadata can be used to implement traits in NFTs, changing their value. It reflects past ownership of the NFT, changing its appearance depending on the current ownership. For instance, in a game environment, an NFT might come across as a golden sword for a top-ranked warrior, but as a silver sword for regular soldiers. Creators could use a combination of colors, styles, and patterns to give a unique experience to NFTs.

Lineage Protocol enables NFT creators to enable community members to contribute their own designs to collections or vote on their favorite traits. Utility traits that unravel exclusive content or experiences add an extra layer to NFTs and enhance their value.

Lineage Protocol enhancing metadata management

Focused on enhancing NFT utility, Lineage Protocol introduces multiple data sets to upgrade the standard of metadata structure and management, while adhering to the current standards. In the process, it removes different constraints on the functionality of NFTs and helps generate a string of use cases that were simply not possible before.

The metadata technology of Lineage Protocol facilitates the creation of dynamic NFTs based on real-world triggers. Moreover, it enables creators to implement traits in NFTs via metadata. Lineage Protocol has boosted the utility of NFTs at an unprecedented level, powering implementations that were not even thought of a couple of years before.

It restricts access to exclusive content or a specific community to token holders.

Possessing tokens gives holders a sense of ownership, driving better engagement and control over community governance.

Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) tokens are particularly useful for demonstrating the members attending an event or experience.

Applications of POAP could include:

Ascertain participation of fans in an online concert,

Serve as discount tokens issued to customers by a business to be later used in online stores,

Vote on protocols,

Participate in private meets.

Limitation of POAP tokens and how Lineage Protocol eliminates it

While POAP creates more use cases for token-gating, it has a deficiency. These tokens are static, meaning they can’t evolve based on external triggers. While you may use POAP to register attendance to an exhibition, it won’t reflect your various experiences within the event.

So you might have attended a concert, a football match, and a poetry recital, but the token won’t reflect any of it. In other words, you can say POAP tokens work in a single dimension.

An example will help understand better how multiple data sets feature works. Let us say you have a BAYC NFT that can work as POAP, each new data set could represent a new event: NFT NYC, Token 2049 and Blockchain Economy Conference.

Each of these data sets are separate badges that could evolve based on the number of events you attended. Distribution of control and storage of data across multiple nodes boosts security as any change in the dataset would require approval of the collection creator.

A POAP with Lineage turns out into an NFT that tracks your participation in various events and communities. It is a constantly evolving token, which transforms based on the number and types of events attended.

Each event one attends adds a new layer of metadata to the token, making it a unique reflection of the experiences of the holder. If they have attended a music carnival, the NFT might be displaying a guitar. Someone joining the online inauguration of an electronics store could be donning a television set.

An added advantage of integration with Lineage Protocol is addition of cross-chain capabilities, taking the POAP beyond a single chain. It can follow the holder across different ecosystems.

Attendees get extra perks from multiple affiliated ecosystems. NFT NYC can add unlimited amount of data sets, which evolve with the amount of events attended. Each data set can also evolve independently.

Unprecedented community engagement

Lineage Protocol empowers brands to transform several spheres of life in innovative ways. For example, companies could give users perks such as free trips/products or training sessions based on their activities on social media. In case of a community, Lineage Protocol could make the voting power of the members proportional to their quality of conversations.

Even in collaborative NFTs, Lineage Protocol could enhance the endeavor. Each community member can submit their data set for the NFT. The best ones among these data sets get approved and become a part of the NFT.

How interoperability of NFTs helps in expansion of community

Interoperability of NFTs, referring to the ability of the tokens to work well across blockchains, helps developers create applications where tokens are chain-agnostic. For example, interoperable game NFTs can be used across games without worrying about the individual chains they are based on.

Cross-chain efficiency of evolving NFTs helps brands to expand their community without worrying about their base chain. Brands can use NFTs to encourage attendees to participate in more events and create a more wholesome, engaging experience.

Thanks to Lineage Protocol, projects are able to collaborate with new projects to deliver exciting utilities that their community members will genuinely appreciate. As more people attend their events, the value and exclusivity of their NFTs will increase, fostering endless possibilities for utility and interaction.

Turning community into a literal investment

Holding NFTs has an added advantage. Nearly every single NFT is a token that unlocks a token-gated community. The holder could resell the token if they want to quit the community for some reason, allowing them to take the community just as a literal investment. Such membership structure isn’t available in a traditional online community.

An example will help better understand. Suppose one joins the management community of a theme park with limited spaces and token-gated management structure. If the theme park grows popular and the member has been active, the token price is likely to grow as well. When one decides to leave, selling their token will fetch them more price than they spent on buying it.

Integrating such tokens with Lineage Protocol makes them evolving and thus more valuable. Every time the holder joins the meetings, votes on the proposals, and actively participates in the development of the theme park, it is recorded in the NFT metadata. The mechanism would enhance the value of more active customers.

The rules regarding buying and selling community tokens can be implemented via smart contracts. A portion of the resale value can be earmarked for the community host or the community itself. Thanks to increased token value and resale, limited communities can be advantageous for members as well as hosts.

Summing up

Lineage Protocol changes the dynamics of online communities by turning POAP NFTs into evolving tokens, thanks to its multiple data sets feature. These NFTs become multi-representational assets, displaying the unique journey of holders, adding a new layer of value to NFTs and increasing engagement.

Moreover, Lineage facilitates tokens gaining cross-chain capabilities, enabling the holder to function in a chain-agnostic manner, highly enhancing the utility of the ecosystem. Multiple creators across chains can contribute to a single POAP at the same time, driving engagement within the community.

Web3 needs a decentralized, high-throughput network that can handle high-demand use cases, such as blockchain gaming and metaverse.

When people talk about NFTs, the focus is usually on the media content or the token on the blockchain. But there is more NFT than that; one key aspect that most people ignore is the metadata.

The metadata is a fundamental part of any NFT. While this might be a surprise, most of the media files in NFTs are not on the blockchain, they are hosted on external servers, and the links are added to the metadata. NFT creators generally use metadata to save costs.

Here, we discuss what metadata is and how it can unlock the true value of NFTs.

What is NFT Metadata

NFT Metadata is the set of data making up the NFT. It contains attributes and properties of the NFT such as name, date of creation, serial number, artist signature, traits of NFT character, etc. It can also include links that direct you to media content such as images, videos, GIFs, MP3s, etc. The metadata is stored in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format.

NFT metadata can be stored on-chain, but this is rarely done for financial and technical reasons. Only a few NFTs on smart contract networks are stored on-chain. This is because the size of NFT with its media files and metadata makes it expensive to mint on the chain and will consume a lot of block space.

Gemini research estimates that minting 1 gigabyte of data into NFT on Ethereum will cost about 17,500 ETH. This is not only prohibitively expensive for creators but will also consume a lot of block space on the network, leading to unnecessary congestion.

Thus, most NFT metadata and other parts of the NFTs are stored off-chain. This can be on centralized servers such as Google Drive and Amazon Web Services or the distributed peer-to-peer InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). The metadata is stored as Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) link inside the NFT contract, and the link references the location of JSON. This way, the metadata is permanently on the blockchain and cannot be altered.

How Metadata Can Improve NFT Value

Without a doubt, metadata is crucial to the creation of NFTs. But the value of metadata goes beyond its cost-effectiveness in creating NFTs. Metadata can play a more significant role in increasing the utility of non-fungible tokens if developers can focus on the value of these data. Here are some of the ways metadata can achieve this:

Multiple data sets — a highway to seamless cross-chain project integrations & limitless utility.

Proving the Authenticity of NFTs

Metadata can make it easier to determine the origin of each NFT and prove its authenticity. In a world with millions of NFTs, one of the criticisms of the technology is how it has also become a tool for copycats to abuse the intellectual property rights of others. But with the metadata providing more comprehensive information such as the date of creation, artist name, digital signature, title, additional resources about the work, etc., potential buyers can easily determine which NFT is genuine. This will encourage more creators to opt for NFTs, and collectors can have more certainty about what they acquire.

Higher Level of Decentralization

When people buy NFTs, they are mostly placing their trust in the creators. Most NFTs are not centralized, which means they can disappear at any time due the NFTs are not decentralized, putting them at risk of being lost at any time.

But NFT metadata can be decentralized, thereby ensuring that the content of the NFT remains safe and secure regardless of what is happening with the hosting server.

Improved and Dynamic Experience

NFTs might have attained mainstream popularity. But they are still lacking when it comes to acceptance. This is mainly because of the need for more utility of most NFTs. Metadata offers an opportunity to improve the experience of holding an NFT, enhancing its utility and unlocking new values.

For instance, Dynamic NFTs that can change based on real-world triggers are only possible with metadata that includes the proper codes and scripts.

Such NFTs with programmable features have a utility that cuts across several industries and can change how people perceive and value NFTs. With dNFTs, even PFPs, generally static and rarely have utility, can become valuable assets. Lineage Protocol is already enabling this.

Composability and Interoperability

Metadata can make it possible for NFTs to interact with several digital assets across blockchains without relying on bridges with vulnerabilities.

The ability of NFTs to integrate with several ecosystems can be a game-changer that will facilitate better experiences and applications.

Lineage protocol prioritizes chain agnosticism, meaning users can use their NFT in different environments on different chains.

Collaborations in NFT Creation

The creation of NFTs is mainly done individually or by just one team. This usually means restrictive metadata and utility.

But it is possible to collaborate among several creators, all contributing to the NFT metadata.

Lineage protocol, a decentralized NFT metadata platform, allows this, making it possible for multiple people to work together on one NFT.

Imagine writers, artists, and developers all adding utility directly to an NFT as co-owners while maximum control and security are guaranteed.

This is what Lineage offers, enabling creators to add new data sets to the NFT, and each data set can exist and evolve independently.

With this feature, there can be new and independent representations for an existing NFT. For example, you can add a 3D character data set to a PFP collection, enabling the same NFT to be represented differently in various ecosystems.

Transparency

Transparency is a major issue for most NFTs as they only provide insufficient data on crucial information such as traits and attributes of NFTs, rights of the holders, creators, etc. This lack of sufficient information discourages several collectors interested in acquiring NFTs.

But such information could be embedded in the metadata to provide investors with all the insights they need to decide. With Lineage protocol’s metadata explorer, users can query and evaluate metadata to ensure its security and transparency.

Decentralized ledger — Lineage Explorer for multi-utiltiy Dynamic NFTs.

Conclusion

NFT metadata has clear benefits that could contribute significant value to NFTs if adequately utilized. For this to happen, there is a need for developers and creators to focus more on the metadata that constitutes the

NFTs rather than the unique tokens on the blockchain. There are four considerations to look at when determining whether metadata can improve NFT utility and value. These are provability, retrievability, traceable mutability, and combinability.

Fortunately, Lineage Protocol allows the developers to create NFTs that meet all these conditions, thereby expanding the horizon of what is possible with NFTs.

Well, imagine this: slaying enemies with your epic arsenal in one game, then seamlessly carrying that same firepower into a completely different gaming universe. Sounds like a gamer’s dream come true, right? Buckle up, because we’re about to explore the exciting concept of dynamic NFTs and how they are transforming in-game collectibles into assets with unlimited utility.

Introduction

Previously, gamers were primarily focused on the enjoyment and excitement they derived from games. However, with the advent of NFTs, a broader audience, including those who are not traditional gaming enthusiasts, has started paying attention to the opportunities offered by web3 games.

NFTs have brought about a significant transformation in the gaming industry by providing financial benefits to both creators and consumers, thereby giving rise to two distinct gaming categories: web2 and web3.

Web2 games, such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, and League of Legends, are traditional games without NFT integration. These games often face challenges related to centralization, data collection, lack of ownership, and potential security breaches stemming from their online play and centralized server hosting.

On the other hand, web3 games like Axie Infinity, Decentraland, and Gods Unchained distinguish themselves by leveraging decentralized technologies and blockchain to address the challenges encountered in web2 gaming. These games allow players to truly own their in-game assets, trade them on marketplaces, and earn real value through play-to-earn models.

However, despite these advancements, the web3 gaming industry still grapples with low engagement rates and the imperative to enhance the overall game experience.

In this article, we will explore how Lineage Protocol is leveraging dynamic NFTs to address the challenges faced by the web3 gaming industry.

How NFTs are Used in Gaming

Imagine owning exclusive 1/1 collection guns in Call of Duty or driving custom-designed cars in GTA, all tradeable for real money or other rare assets. These once-fantastical ideas have become reality through the power of NFTs.

NFTs are used to represent in-game assets that can be uniquely owned and traded for monetary gains. Games like Sandbox, and Splinterlands serve as prime examples of this transformative trend.

While this is a progressive shift, it’s important to understand that NFTs can be divided into two categories: static and dynamic.

Static NFTs, like the individual cards in Splinterlands, have predefined characteristics and limited functionality.

While these NFTs hold value and uniqueness, they often lack engagement because they are designed for specific purposes and don’t have the capability to interact with the gaming environment or adapt to different gaming conditions.

On the flip side, dynamic NFTs have revolutionized the web3 gaming experience by introducing interactive and responsive in-game assets. These dynamic NFTs can evolve, respond to player actions, and adapt to changing circumstances, adding a new layer of immersion and excitement to gameplay.

However, managing and updating the metadata associated with dynamic NFTs can be complex and challenging, which is why Lineage Protocol is here to help solve these issues with solutions we will later discuss.

The Rapid growth of Web3 Gaming

Web3 gaming has captivated the attention of gamers worldwide, as more than 50% of US gamers now possess cryptocurrency and 80% express interest in utilizing it for in-game transactions. The projected value of NFTs in 2023 is an impressive $3.5 billion.

Despite facing challenges since 2018, such as Ethereum blockchain congestion caused by high CryptoKitties transaction volumes, the Ronin Network hack, and bear market conditions, the NFT gaming industry has shown remarkable resilience. Both the number of NFT games and the volume of player participation have seen noticeable growth.

Blockchain games accounted for 44% of activity in March and rose to 45% in the first quarter of 2023, surpassing the 42% recorded in the previous quarter of 2022. Polygon has emerged as a favored blockchain platform for gaming, attracting an average of 97,000 daily active users (DAU) in 2022 — a substantial 340% increase from the previous year.

According to a report from DappRadar, Web3 gaming projects secured a substantial investment amount of at least $739 million in the first quarter of 2023, with a staggering $434 million, or 60% of the total, raised in March alone. These figures underscore the growing confidence and support for the thriving Web3 gaming sector.

Benefits of NFTs in Web3 Games

What do NFTs offer gamers? Let’s take a closer look below.

True ownership of digital assets

NFTs offer web3 gamers true ownership of their in-game assets, a concept that is absent in traditional games where players may accumulate vast amounts of assets as they progress through the game, but do not truly own them as they exist on centralized servers and function merely as tools for use within the game.

With NFTs, gamers can enjoy a decentralized economy where their assets can be used and traded as they see fit. This level of ownership opens up new possibilities for creative gameplay and revenue generation through asset trading on blockchain marketplaces.

Asset interoperability

In-game assets in NFT games are not just limited to a specific gaming environment. They can be easily transferred across multiple environments and even optimized for various purposes. Some brands have built APIs for vast in-game assets as NFTs that can be used by any gaming brand, regardless of the blockchain they are built on. This seamless experience allows in-game assets to be more responsive to gamers, providing a more immersive and engaging experience.

Tokenization

In-game digital items are a common feature that allow players to purchase high-end equipment or in-game currencies such as digital gold. However, the use of tokens has transformed this experience by making these items a tangible asset in the gaming economy.

Tokenization has created inclusivity for all gamers, especially those in countries with laws restricting international payments. Fungible tokens offer an alternative for in-game assets to be available to everyone.

The Limitations of Static NFTs in web3 Games

The rarity of static NFTs is determined solely by a programmed dataset and does not consider in-game events. These limitations lead to a lack of user retention, absence of personalized experiences, and inefficient monetization.

Lack of user retention occurs when expensive NFTs experience a significant decline in value during unfavorable market conditions. As a result, players may lose interest and choose to sell their assets in order to minimize their losses.

Also, the absence of personalized experiences means that users are subjected to repetitive gameplay, which can result in boredom and decreased engagement.

Static NFTs are inefficient for monetization compared to dynamic NFTs, which evolve and grow in rarity through usage. This creates an avenue to monetize NFTs based on their unique attributes and utility.

How Lineage Protocol breaks these limitations

Lineage Protocol integrates and optimizes dynamic NFTs to address the challenges posed by static NFTs. Let’s discuss the solutions it offers below.

Multiple data sets: Lineage Protocol’s standout feature is the ability to incorporate multiple data sets into NFTs. This means that in-game assets, like characters, can have additional attributes or elements added to them as separate entities. These entities can exist and evolve independently, allowing for the integration of new skins, weapons, or other features into the game as unique NFTs that can be utilized individually.

Collaborative NFTs: With Lineage Protocol’s solution, creators can set permissions and allow other NFT creators to add new data sets to existing NFTs. This can be done across all chains, enabling cross-chain and cross-project collaborations.

This way, NFTs can exist in multiple ecosystems simultaneously and each data set can evolve independently.

Interoperable NFTs: Lineage Protocol empowers NFTs to seamlessly move between platforms and ecosystems, fostering collaborations and unlocking limitless new experiences. Game developers can leverage NFTs across different blockchains to create immersive experiences that integrate assets from diverse sources.

You can think of this as something similar to the Metaboss MMORPG that supports more than fourteen NFT collections to be used in its gaming environment but not limited to a single chain and a single game.

Metadata Explorer: One exceptional feature of Lineage Protocol is the metadata explorer, which is similar to Etherscan. As dynamic NFTs continuously evolve and acquire new metadata, the explorer diligently tracks the evolution of NFTs right from their genesis, providing players with valuable insights into how these NFTs are utilized across diverse ecosystems.

Secured and Seamless-experience: Lineage Protocol offers a swift evolution of NFTs without compromising on security. By eliminating gas fees and heavy smart contract interactions, it allows for instant and dynamic development of NFTs on any blockchain.

In Conclusion

The current state of NFT utilization faces challenges of low engagement and stagnant experiences, making games unappealing during market downturns. Even with the emergence of dynamic NFTs, game projects lacking innovative implementation risk encountering similar or worse outcomes.

The issues of compromised security, interoperability challenges, smart contract execution, and inadequate gaming experiences can hamper user retention and hinder widespread adoption of web3 technologies.

By addressing the limitations of the current NFT ecosystem, Lineage Protocol not only transforms NFTs into valuable assets but also enhances player experiences, fosters creativity, and propels the future of web3 gaming.

With Lineage Protocol’s solutions, a new era of engaging, immersive, and dynamic gaming experiences is on the horizon.

Non-fungible tokens are one of the most innovative developments and use cases for blockchain technology. Since going mainstream in 2021, NFTs have seen massive adoption. This is not surprising, given that the technology has clear signs of potential and use cases.

Although there are different types of NFTs, most of the trading activity and attention has been on PFP NFTs. PFP stands for Picture for Profile, and it describes the digital artworks that serve mostly as avatars on the metaverse and profile pictures on social media accounts. Projects such as CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club contributed significantly to the popularity of this type of NFT, leading to the emergence of several other PFP collections.

Unsurprisingly, most traditional companies that initially adopted NFTs also focused on PFP. Twitter launched a feature that allowed NFT holders to post their profile pictures and link to that crypto wallet. Meta copied the same thing with Facebook and Instagram. Even Reddit released Avatar NFTs.

However, the popularity of PFP NFTs has waned in recent times. This is mostly because this type of NFT gained attention due to what they are, not what they can do. They represented a sign of exclusivity and a status symbol for the few lucky to mint them early or rich enough to buy them for big bucks later. The high prices of the NFTs also attracted celebrities, further increasing their popularity as it led to attention-grabbing headlines.

In terms of utility, most PFP NFTs offer no value for their holders beyond using them as profile pictures and being part of a digital community. This meant that most NFT traders only made profits by selling for a higher price than they paid. No wonder Bill Gates described NFTs as based on the greater fool theory. In recent months, most companies that launched NFT products have silently rolled back those features. Meta recently shut down the NFT minting and trading feature on Facebook and Instagram.

However, not all PFP NFTs are devoid of utility. Some, like BAYC and Cool Cats, offered some benefits for their users. For instance, BAYC holders got free mints for Mutant Apes, BAKC, Otherdeeds, and an Apecoin airdrop. Cool Cats also give several rewards to its holders. But these NFTs and others that offer utility were more of an exception than a norm. Most PFP NFTs offer no tangible value beyond the possibility of selling for more than you paid.

Despite the lack of utility for PFP NFTs, they account for more than 70% of the NFT market cap. This shows the dominance of PFP compared to all other types of digital collectibles on the blockchain. It also shows why the NFT market has significantly declined in activity. During the bull run of 2021 and early 2022, the NFT market recorded billions in trading volume thanks to PFPs such as BAYC, Azuki, Doodles, CryptoPunks, etc. But those days are long over.

The change in economic conditions means most people now consider utility above anything. High inflation, global interest rate hike, a drop in cryptocurrency value, and layoffs, especially in the tech sector, show we are in a risk-off environment. In such conditions, the NFT market, which has a utility problem, has seen demand drop along with interest and market cap. Even top projects with utilities, such as BAYC, have also seen their floor prices decline massively.

It is important to note that the decline in NFT trading volume and interest is not entirely because of PFPs. Beyond the macroeconomic factors, there have been catastrophic events in the crypto space, such as the Terra UST collapse in May and the FTX bankruptcy in November. All these also affected the NFT industry. DappRadar reported that the Terra Luna collapse had the most devastating impact on the NFT market.

Market Decline a Blessing in Disguise

Source: https://dune.com/rchen8/opensea

The decline in NFT trading activity and interest is not altogether a bad thing. It has shown that NFTs in their present state are mostly risk assets good for speculative trading. But NFTs can be much more than this. Thus, the market decline presents a golden opportunity for the industry to move away from digital JPEGs on the blockchain to utility-driven projects with real-world value and use cases.

Fortunately, it is easier than ever to create NFTs with utility and application in the real world. Lineage Protocol, a decentralized metadata network, is focused on this. The protocol seeks to help creators unleash the true potential of NFTs by creating projects that have utility and can seamlessly integrate into multiple ecosystems.

Several real-world applications exist for NFTs in sectors such as gaming, sports, music, loyalty systems, real estate, and more. But the majority of the NFTs in existence don’t focus on these areas. This is due to many reasons, including the technical barriers to creating these NFTs. It is part of why some creators opt for the easy-to-create PFP collections. Fortunately, Lineage protocol promises a future where creators can do truly incredible things with NFTs.

With Lineage Protocol, creators can develop and deploy Dynamic NFTs, which are more interactive than regular NFTs. This makes them ideal for those looking to create more utility with NFTs. The protocol also improves on the current iterations of Dynamic NFTs with the multiple data sets feature that allows creators to add new data sets to existing NFTs. This means that even after developing the dNFTs, creators can still add new data sets (utilities) with Lineage.

Additionally, the multiple data sets feature enables NFT creators using Lineage Protocol to delegate collaborators' permissions. This means multiple teams can collaborate on NFT collection and add diverse data sets all of which can be easily approved through automation.

Given its emphasis on data sets, Lineage Protocol focuses on managing NFT metadata, which is a crucial part many NFT holders and creators ignore. Using the protocol, metadata becomes trackable, evolves, and interoperates on different ecosystems. This could significantly impact how NFTs are used, thereby enabling more adoption.

Conclusion

Non-fungible tokens can be much more than on-chain images that can be put on your profile to prove your status. Several use cases exist that could revolutionize multiple sectors and improve how certain things are done. But for the industry to take advantage of this potential, there is a need to look beyond PFPs. Until then, there is only so much digital images can do, no matter how expensive they are.

In recent years, brands have been striving to retain and engage their customers amid growing concerns about data privacy, particularly following the iOS privacy update. Web3 technologies offer a more personalized approach, enabling brands to tap into the power of communities. As customers increasingly ignore traditional advertising efforts and seek more organic engagement with brands, NFTs present a promising opportunity for brands to connect with their audience. In this article, we’ll explore how the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) has achieved success and how it can be further enhanced with the help of Lineage Protocol.

The Next Frontier in Brand Loyalty: POAP, Dynamic NFTs, and the Evolving Customer Experience

As major brands strategize their Web3 initiatives, Gartner predicts that by 2024, 50% of publicly listed brands will incorporate NFTs into their brand or digital ecosystem presence. NFTs are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening digital ecosystems and driving enterprise valuations.

Starbucks is one company already exploring NFT technology, integrating it into its Odyssey loyalty program. This program features coffee-themed NFTs that correspond to real-world experiences and serves as an extension of Starbucks’ existing, Starbucks Rewards, loyalty program while leveraging Web3 technology.

POAP, or Proof of Attendance Protocol, is an NFT awarded to participants of events, courses, or activities as a symbol of recognition for their attendance or participation in online or in-person events.

The primary goal of POAP is to enhance brand engagement and retention. Lineage Protocol empowers brands to create dynamic NFTs that evolve in response to the current state of the NFT market, delivering a personalized experience for customers.

Dynamic NFTs elevate the POAP experience by providing real-time updates and personalization for users. They enable event-specific customization, fostering a more immersive and engaging experience for participants. These NFTs can mirror changes in real-world events, ensuring the digital tokens remain relevant and current. Moreover, they support unique features such as gamification or dynamic artwork, further increasing user engagement.

Lineage Protocol allows brands to utilize evolving POAPs across all blockchain networks, creating additional engagement opportunities with customers and fostering innovative brand collaborations. The protocol recently made its debut at the OffChain event in Kuala Lumpur on March 21st, 2023.

OffChain origins in Malaysia

OffChain Malaysia was co-founded by Lineage Protocol’s CEO, Wilson Tay alongside Dave Feng (Oasis Metaverse Venture) and Sashie Kumar (Arkatia Hospitality). Initially, it was a small group of Web3 creators and innovators focused on building within the space, but it has since grown into a full-fledged organization connecting Web3 builders and innovators in the region.

Evolving POAP experience powered by Lineage Protocol

On March 21st, during the OffChain conference, a new method of rewarding attendance and engagement was introduced, powered by Lineage Protocol. This innovative approach allows attendees to collect points and advance to higher levels (each event = one level) as they participate in real-life events in Kuala Lumpur. Lineage Protocol not only enables NFTs to change state and reflect real-world changes but also facilitates effective cross-chain collaborations between brands looking to expand their customer base through evolving NFTs.

Dynamic POAP experience powered by Lineage Protocol.

Attendees at the event could mint a free NFT, which granted them additional perks such as complimentary drinks and discounts. OffChain founders and CEO Wilson Tay plan to leverage this technology to collaborate with brands, offering more rewards to attendees as they participate in more events and accumulate points. This strategy aims to create a more immersive experience for loyal members while building a strong brand presence, ultimately providing a valuable way to reward dedicated brand supporters.

OffChain’s plan involves collaborating with new projects to deliver exciting utilities that their community members will genuinely appreciate. As more people attend their events, the value and exclusivity of their NFTs will increase, fostering a sense of community and positioning regular attendees as role models for newcomers to emulate.

In summary, the fusion of POAP and Lineage Protocol is paving the way for brands to engage with their customers in a more personalized and impactful manner. As more brands adopt Web3 technologies and integrate dynamic NFTs into their strategies, we can anticipate a rise in partnerships, collaborations, and interactive experiences that offer tangible value for the most devoted customers and community members. By leveraging the power of evolving NFTs, brands can cultivate a stronger sense of belonging and inclusivity while enhancing their brand presence and overall attractiveness.

As we look to the future, the potential applications of dynamic NFTs and POAPs are vast, spanning loyalty programs, event-based rewards, cross-brand collaborations, and multi-chain interoperability.

As the technology continues to evolve and mature, it will be fascinating to witness the creative ways in which brands harness these tools to strengthen their relationships with customers and design immersive, engaging experiences that stand out in an increasingly competitive digital environment.

LineageProtocol.com

LinkedIn — Lineage Protocol

Twitter — Lineage Protocol

OffChain

However, as the number of NFTs multiplies, so does the demand for efficient metadata management and interoperability. This is where Lineage Protocol enters the picture.

In this article, we’ll delve into Lineage Protocol, its functionality, and its significance within the Web3 ecosystem. Additionally, we’ll examine its various components and fast-track you to a future filled with boundless NFT utility and interoperability. But first, let’s take a moment to discuss the current state of NFTs.

1. The current state of NFTs.

2. The key to NFT utility: Static NFTs vs Dynamic NFTs.

3. What is Lineage Protocol?

4. Where does Lineage Protocol stand in the web3 ecosystem?

5. Bringing safety and transparency to the NFT space.

6. Web2 transaction speed in web3.

7. Conclusion.

The current state of NFTs

Static NFTs are the standard we’ve all become familiar with, as exemplified by Bored Apes, Punks, and other collections that have taken over social media. These NFTs have sold for staggering prices, leaving some to wonder why anyone would pay thousands of dollars for a simple JPEG.

However, others saw a massive opportunity in NFTs, envisioning them as the future of the internet, with blockchain as the foundational technology that authenticates and validates the assets we use to interact with one another. Particularly in the age of AI, blockchain will play a crucial role in distinguishing between real and fake, human-made and AI-generated, and original and counterfeit assets.

Static NFTs can represent an immutable asset, whether it’s a JPEG, GIF, video, or real-world item. However, this means that they cannot change or evolve over time. While we were initially captivated by this technology, we’ve come to recognize its limitations — limitations that prevent it from achieving widespread adoption.

In contrast, dynamic NFTs, also known as evolving NFTs, can respond to real-world events and change their state (metadata) based on external conditions. Metadata refers to additional information, such as the name, description, and unique identifier of the digital asset stored on the blockchain alongside the NFT, which helps verify its authenticity and ownership.

As impressive as NFT technology is, we’ve all been anticipating the moment when we’d witness its practical applications. While dynamic NFTs present this opportunity, Lineage Protocol serves as the enabler for interoperability, security, and transparency. This, in turn, further expands the utility of dynamic NFTs, allowing them to transcend all chains while ensuring their safety.

What is Lineage Protocol?

As NFT founders, we’ve faced challenges related to NFT utility, transparency, and scalability firsthand while working with numerous partners and our sold-out project, Oasis. We brainstormed various innovative ideas for NFT utility, but the complexity of tools available in the market and their limitations prompted us to develop our own solutions.

We envisioned our NFTs evolving, existing on multiple chains, and providing a secure experience for users. Amidst the numerous questionable activities in the NFT space, transparency became our top priority.

To achieve our goals, we devised the following solutions:

• Metadata blockchain — Each NFT state change will be visible in our Lineage Explorer, earning us the nickname “The Etherscan for NFTs.”

• Cross-chain and cross-project collaborations — We aim to empower every project, game, DAO, and anyone using the current dynamic or static NFT standard to expand their ecosystems.

• Our collaborative solution, Lineage’s Myriad, enables numerous additional use cases, facilitating collaboration with any project, metaverse, or platform utilizing NFTs.

• A dynamic, affordable fee model that can adjust to your needs.

• Permissionless metadata changes, which means anyone can submit a change to the NFT, but approval depends on the collection owners. This fosters collaboration, creating collaborative NFTs.

• High transaction speed. Unlike traditional blockchain networks that require validation of smart contracts, Lineage Protocol focuses on managing metadata changes for dynamic NFTs, resulting in a lighter and faster network.

In technical terms, Lineage Protocol is a consensus-driven, peer-to-peer computing system with database-like storage capabilities. Essentially, we’re a decentralized metadata management system, well aware of the implications for NFTs — a breakthrough in safety and transparency. Through Lineage’s Myriad and permissionless metadata changes, NFT utility becomes limitless.

Recall the obstacles that hindered NFT projects from fulfilling their roadmaps? It was the lack of NFT utility and market solutions. Projects needed middleware solutions like Lineage Protocol.

After building and observing, we’re now ready to empower every single NFT with unlimited utility and security, restoring trust to the builders.

Lineage Protocol and its position in the web3 ecosystem

Lineage Protocol is a middleware, serving as communication facilitators between blockchains and dapps.

Oracles convey on-chain or off-chain state changes to Lineage Protocol, triggering a state change that’s reflected within the protocol itself. This is then integrated with a dapp (NFT project, collection, Web3 game), and the metadata change is subsequently reflected in the NFT.

Lineage Protocol plays a central role in the dynamic NFT ecosystem, acting as middleware between blockchains and dapps.

In simpler terms, Oracles function as satellites, continuously gathering signals while Lineage Protocol identifies and communicates these changes in an organized fashion to a dApp through API integration. Our standout feature, however, is the ability to connect with any blockchain. As a result, we can facilitate a connection between, for example, an Ethereum-based NFT and a Solana-based NFT via our decentralized network. Cross-chain and cross-project collaborations have never been more straightforward.

Dynamic NFTs — utility

Gaming

Dynamic NFTs are poised to revolutionize the web3 gaming landscape, enabling game characters and assets to evolve like never before. Envision minting an NFT that adapts as you level up your character in your favorite web3 game, with entire asset structures built on interacting and evolving NFTs that can be showcased, authenticated, and traded.

With the Lineage Explorer, you can track your character’s progression over time. Thanks to decentralized metadata management, you can be confident that your NFT is safe from tampering, with changes only occurring based on pre-determined conditions.

Dynamic NFTs even enable cross-chain interactions, allowing your 3D game character to participate in a limited fans-only minigame on another blockchain. Here, your character retains its properties (such as HP, level, and experience) but is represented with a corresponding 2D dataset. The possibilities with dynamic NFTs are truly endless, opening up new frontiers for web3 gaming and beyond.

Tokenizing real-world assets

By linking NFTs to real-world assets, like real estate or luxury goods, dynamic NFTs can provide ownership tracking, provenance, and more versatile asset management. This innovation enables fractional ownership, easier asset transfer, and greater transparency in the market.

Interactive collectibles and reward programs

Dynamic NFTs empower the creation of interactive collectibles and rewards programs that can evolve, adapt, and respond to user actions. This leads to deeper engagement and customer loyalty, as participants can see the value of their collectibles and rewards grow over time, based on their interactions and achievements.

Art and digital media ownership

Dynamic NFTs are redefining art and digital media ownership by allowing creators to imbue their works with evolving content or features. This creates a more immersive experience for collectors, as their digital art can change and grow over time, reflecting the artist’s vision or even reacting to external factors and events.

Brand loyalty and marketing campaigns

Dynamic NFTs provide brands with a unique opportunity to engage with their customers through customizable marketing campaigns and loyalty programs. By using dynamic NFTs as rewards or incentives, brands can create evolving experiences that encourage customer interaction, generate excitement, and foster long-term brand loyalty.

Bringing safety and transparency to the NFT space

Lineage Protocol not only expands a project’s utility and enables NFT growth across the entire Web3 ecosystem but also serves as a safeguard against tampering with NFT metadata.

The most significant issues with static NFTs include:

• Centralized metadata (the data sets behind each NFT) is unsafe, as it is vulnerable to manipulation or tampering due to a single point of control for the data.

• Centralized systems face risks of downtime or data loss resulting from technical issues or malicious attacks.

Decentralized metadata with a ledger presents a secure alternative by distributing the control and storage of data across multiple nodes in a network. This ensures enhanced security, as altering the data would require consensus among the majority of nodes.

This solution guarantees safety because metadata can only be changed if specific conditions are met in the smart contract (e.g., character levels up, NFT changes ownership, etc.).

Transparency is achieved through the use of our “Etherscan for NFTs” — the Lineage Explorer — where every metadata change is recorded on the blockchain and reflected in our explorer. Metadata changes can be tracked.

Consider a situation where you’re purchasing a house or a regular NFT. You’d want to know the property’s ownership history, when repairs were made, and the associated costs from three years ago. Similarly, with NFT collectibles (or other items), you could quickly determine if the NFT unlocked extra merchandise or additional perks, enabling a more informed purchasing decision.

Transparency and safety, along with utility and interoperability, are what the NFT space currently lacks, and we’re on a mission to provide these features to every single project across all chains.

What does it mean for NFT utility?

The shift in NFT perception and mass adoption are just around the corner. The safety and adaptability of dynamic NFT technology, along with Lineage Protocol’s role as an enabler of safety and interoperability, can bring it to the forefront of mass consumer consciousness.

• Interoperability and trust:

Cross-chain and cross-project collaborations can remove negative stigmas and help projects collaborate efficiently and effectively. Your favorite projects can now collaborate with ease.

• Seamless transition from Static to Dynamic NFT standard:
For projects that don’t yet support the Dynamic NFT standard, we welcome them to integrate with us. The process is straightforward, and we provide SDKs for most use cases (and are continuously expanding) from PAOP to GameFi, allowing projects to dream bigger and aim higher with their roadmaps.

• Increased user engagement and retention:

The evolution of NFTs and the ability for projects to seamlessly collaborate will unlock numerous opportunities for brands to engage their users.

• Expanding creator economy:

Lineage Protocol and dynamic NFTs form a powerful combination, enabling artists to create living, evolving art pieces. This allows users to create collaborative music, art, and designs where each design piece is a separate subset of metadata and can be approved only when it wins a vote — the best design wins. The possibilities are endless.

• Unlocking new revenue streams:

New utility opportunities will attract more businesses to the Web3 ecosystem. Higher user retention and engagement will translate into new revenue streams that were previously unattainable.

Web2 Transaction Speed in Web3

In the ever-evolving world of Web3, one of the most significant challenges is achieving the transaction speed that users have come to expect from Web2 platforms. Lineage Protocol, a middleware solution for dynamic NFTs, aims to bridge that gap by providing Web2-like speeds while maintaining the decentralization and security benefits of Web3.

The key to Lineage Protocol’s speed lies in the optimized structure of the work being done on the network. Unlike traditional blockchain networks that require validation of smart contracts, Lineage Protocol focuses on managing metadata changes for dynamic NFTs, resulting in a lighter and faster network. This approach allows the protocol to achieve Web2 speeds while still embracing the decentralized ethos of Web3.

Smart contracts, while essential in many blockchain applications, are not the sole driving force behind Lineage Protocol. The platform leverages oracles to read from smart contracts on other chains when necessary, but most updates come directly through API calls to the network. This flexibility allows dApps to integrate with Lineage Protocol in various ways, utilizing SDKs prepared for different scenarios and use cases.

Lineage Protocol’s innovative approach not only enhances the NFT space by enabling interoperability and adaptability but also has the potential to revolutionize the way Web3 applications are built and experienced. By delivering Web2-like transaction speeds in a Web3 environment, Lineage Protocol stands at the forefront of the next generation of blockchain technology, paving the way for a seamless transition to a decentralized future.

Conclusion — The Unstoppable Rise of Dynamic NFTs in the Web3 World

As the Web3 landscape continues to evolve, dynamic NFTs are set to become its integral part.

These innovative digital assets offer unparalleled versatility, enabling new forms of digital ownership, interaction, and creativity.

By embracing the dynamic nature of NFTs, we open up a world of possibilities for artists, developers, and collectors alike.

Discover the Power of Lineage Protocol for Your Projects

There has never been a better time to explore Lineage Protocol and its potential for your NFT projects.
