Not had some Drum and Bass on here for a while and it is vinyl Thursday so let’s get this little gem from Mike B up.
From 1998 and remixes from Roni Size. As usual the angelic voice counterpoints the jazzy breaks. Atmospheric and slightly mysterious. The Dub is great as it builds into some laid back D&B.
Uberzone’s (Timothy Wiles) mixes are a little dated in composition but you get more of her vocals in amongst the breaks and bounce. The breaks keep rolling on the instrumental dub.
It’s Thursday so it’s vinyl but you can never tell with these excellent Razormaid ! rips.
Mostly German EBM / IBM and Techno from 1990/ 91
A few duplcates (or soon to be as the Anniversary 9.0 series draws to a close), although I haven’t worked out if the mixes are different yet I got a feeling they are. A1, B1 and B2 seem to be unique to this collection. Interesting to note that Warren Sandford gets a credit on the Hypnotyk track.
With the new tracks there are some bizarre connections, Uzma features Squeeze bassist Harri Kakoulli and Gypsy singer Zahrema di Starace (Invaders Of The Heart, Loop Guru) Their track is some early Tribal House.
Is there such as genre as minimal synth wave with Post Punk guitar ?
From September 1982 and from Netherlands band Störung. Scratchy, distorted guitar and drum machine working overtime (Roland TR-707 and TR-808) and some very analogue style synths with a string synth (Crumar Multiman S) providing the smoothness. The occasional vocals were sung in English so let’s call it Coldwave.
The Post Punk comes with the arrangement and pace. Quick punches of guitar and synth build up a groove then disappear in an instant. It must have sounded pretty unique at the time. A vocoder makes an appearance on “Kortsluiting” contrasting with the rock chords.
For fans of minimal synth wave and those who like a bit of raw guitar.
As usual with these compilations there maybe some duplicates that have appeared on here already. Delete where approriate.
“Produced by Dave Ball (Soft Cell) and released on Mobile Suit Corporation label (a label set up by Steve Coe of Monsoon fame to showcase non-Western pop music). This duo of Josie Warden and Brian Moss also sang background vocals on Soft Cell’s first LP. Of course they would gain some fame after dropping the word Phenomenon from their name.” So the extended A side and revealing the 80’s obsession with the Orient Reminds me a bit of “Rent” by PSB’s. The B-side was posted last week.
The Classic “Kisses…” from Sudetan Creche and another UK band. Off to Belgium for some Low Class from 1984 (but they could be English!)
Ciaran Harte from the UK and a track from 1980 and a minimal synth gem. Dementia Precox (from Ohio) and that track I had taped from the radio (John Peel) re-emerges. Actors ? Actors ?
Jumping to 1988 and from German band Dilemma and a bass buzzing bit of Front 242. Back to ’82 and the melodic sound of a UK band Fred and even more UK stuff from Stranger Station ! Some bubbling analogue synths here.
Belgium duo Twilight Ritual and a 1986 track but sounding very old and shame about the vocals and it does drag. More Kuruki from Ghent and the B-side of “Crocodile Tears” and very Knight Rider , 8-Bit in arrangement.
From their 1984 album and also on “Jack Pelter And His Sex-Change Chicken” here;
“Drowning In Berlin” in terms of atmospherics.
The compilation closes with another 12″ mix this time from the ’83 release by German band Profil. It all goes New Romantic with Simmon’s at the ready.
Continuing with Tente Acid Jazz collection from Talkin’ Loud Records.
Perception were the trio of Joy Rose (Incognito, Moccasoul,,Children Of Judah) , Sean Daly (Drive, She Said) and Stephen Forde. Just their 4 single releases on offer.
Find The Feeling (CDS)
A definite Funky House Groove from this from 1992 but originally doing the rounds in 1991.
Samples “Runnin'” by Earth, Wind & Fire, from the album “All ‘n All” (1977) and also on the original version the added percussion of the 12″ remix of “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)” by The Jacksons.
Slam’s (Orde Meikle, Stuart McMillan) remix immediately ages the track unfortunately. Slower but quite lush.
From February ’92. A joint release with label mates the K-Creative and some more mixes of the previous track. Pal Joey gives Konk / Abstract Truth’s saxophonist Dana Vlcek a guest outing. A much, deeper, clipped groove.
The K-Creative members: V-Love (Andrew John Valentine – Scare Electric), The Botanist (Dominic Oakenfull – Galliano, Incognito, Raw Stylus), Zen Bromley (Andy Bromley), Jim C. (Jim Carmichael – Freak Power, Boogie Back Allstars)) and return to more of a Hip Hop vibe.
Track 3 starts off quite bleepy and then rolls into some Hip Hop.
The closing track has layers of loops and samples and the laidback rap with a funky synth bass and a groovy middle section.
A stab at some commercial success and the slower, soulful cut from April 1993 with great lead vocals from Rose. A cover of the Barbera Streisand track written by The Bee Gees from 1980 track produced with Lati Kronlund. Track 4 is a very nice street mix, with shuffling beats and a hidden gem. Remixed by Ray Hayden.
Track 2 was a co-written with US producer Michael McEvoy. Bright and funky with a typical Talkin’ Loud coolness.
Late 80’s synths blend in with the traditional arrangements and passionate vocals. The tech does make for a interesting listen. A bit Easy Listening, a bit AOR and a bit Prog. (Check out the last track)
Another bit of Razormaid ! with an Industrial / EBM slant, released in 1991 (and a slight bit of crossover)
Scrot track stands out as an old skool raver but I’m here for The Shamen mix from a track from “En-Tact”, a radical re-work with the anti-apartheid message still strong. Vini Reilly (wish there was more of his guitar!)
X Marks The Pedwalk are still putting stuff out with their track from 1991 closing the selection with a bit of Industrial lite.
