Goals for 2013

Image

We all need goals in life.  Something to strive for.  I find that we gamers are the worse of all if we do not focus.  We are bears of little brain that flock to the shiniest model that we see and bounce from project to project.  So here are my goals:

  • Get these Daemons done for Brawler Bash.  I need to find time and just get them done. Here's is what I have remaining.
    • Keeper of Secrets - If a plastic one does not come out soon I might have to buy the current model.
    • 30 Daemonettes - The skin is basecoated and washed.  Now to do the blues and yellows.
    • 6 Seekers of Slaanesh - Same stage as the remaining Daemonettes.
    • 10 Furies - I had a very creative idea with these, but in reality it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked.  Instead, I am going with the Daemonettes with Tyranid Gargoyle wings.  I have the models, but I need to assemble and convert.  The plan is to have them on brass rod flying stands so they are at variable heights.
    • Herald of Tzeentch - I know he isn't Slaanesh, but I am using the Avatars of War worm looking Sorceror.  He is basecoated, I just need to finish the highlights.
    • One of the large Slaaneshi Exalted chariots (they are just too cool not to assemble).  It is currently sitting in a box.
    • Maybe a block of 30 Horrors painted in the grey, blue, and yellow.  They are assembled, but I want to make some regimental bases as they currently are a pain to rank up.
  • Get a display board done for the Daemons.  I have some great ideas in my head, but until I get the army done, this will have to wait.
  • Paint up more terrain.  You can never have too much terrain.
  • Start up a Mordheim league in the Fall.  Either hold it on a couple of Saturdays, or as part of Wednesday Game Night.  Those who know me, know I love Mordheim.  I found some affordable paper buildings over at Daves Games that would be perfect for a league.
  • Finally, just get a game in once a month.

 Sorry, no models this time.

Skulls for the Land

Sometimes you run across some Warhammer gems while looking at other things in life.  These terrain pieces were all bought at a discount, and the fences and posts were only a $1 each.  The skulls fit in well with the GW terrain that is out there.  It is always worth your time to take a quick peek while visiting those craft stores with your wife or girlfriend.

This is was found in the discount rack of a pet store for less than a few bucks a year ago.  Aquarium pieces are always a good source for terrain. Even has the skulls to fit in :)  It makes for a nice sinister cave or impassable terrain piece.

Image
I found these painted fences and posts after Halloween for 70% off at a Micheal's Craft store.  I just need to touch some things up and they will make a nice spirit fences.

These posts actually light up.  I also found these at Micheal's for a $1.

The Roto-tillers of the Chaos Wastes

Here is my Slaanesh Hellflayer.  This was a fun kit to put together.  The "wheels" were a pain in the rear, but when I construct an exalted chariot in the future I will paint the "wheels" before gluing them together.  I kept the same ol' color scheme.  I hope you like.  Enjoy!

I won something

Image
I won a Liebster award.  A thank you goes out to Scott over at My Little World of Dementia

As part of receiving this award I am to pass this on to five other bloggers, (I'll list the criteria at end)
whose blogs I enjoy......(no particular order)

#1 Land of Misfit Toys-  This is my long time friend and fellow shaved header, Brad, who shares the passion of GW with me.  He owns more armies than anyone I know, and the ideas that come out of his bald brain are quite amazing.  Brad is always a good sport and a great person to play against if you are in his neck of the woods.

#2. The Magnificent Bastards  - This blog has a few authors and I enjoy their blogs very much.

#3 Mr. Saturday's Mumblings - I have been following this blog since he started making his own custom Fimir army.  It is quite impressive and I encourage people to take a look.

#4 The Quiet Limit of the World - Ben is from Durham and a member of the Fancy Ladz.  Ben is the co-broadcaster of the podcast Bull City Wargaming.  Always a good read.

It is hard to have a 5th since everyone I would nominate already has one or doesn't post often, but just check the sidebar to see who I follow.

Lastly here is the criteria for my nominees should you choose to partake

1. Copy and paste the award on your blog linking it to the blogger who has given it you.

2. Pass the award to your top 5 favourite blogs with less than 200 followers by leaving a comment on one of their posts to notify them that they have won the award and listing them on your own blog.

3. Sit back and bask in the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing you have made someones day!

4. There is no obligation to pass this onto someone else but its nice if you take the time to do so.

They are never too young to start

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  If you read my last post you know ours was quite busy.  I was in a reflective sort of mood and thought about how wonderful it is to see my two year old daughter starting to enjoy certain crafts.  The reason I have been posting more these last few weeks is very simple.  I have hobby things to show to you people.  Anyone with young children understands that one of the hardest things to do is balance life and young children with our Warhammer hobby.  I think I came up with a solution.

My daughter has been painting with me. We put a small apron on her, set up her painting station (really just a an old end table with a towel over it) and head into the basement.  I grab a few old figures from my bitz box and let her go to town with her pinks and glittering greens.  This entertains her for an hour or two.  Daughter is happy, Daddy is happy, and most importantly, Mama is happy we aren't bothering her for a little while.

Here are a sample of her awesome paint jobs.  I must say I am very proud, they still look better than my early days of painting.  The one thing I find amusing is she is very concerned with painting the underside of the base.

I have also been working on my gaming table.  I always wanted a table that I can insert different boards, and this table will allow me to drop in different "worlds" if I want to in the future.  Plus I like having a lip on the edge of the table to keep things from falling off.  Here are a couple photos.  Right now I just threw some terrain down.  I still need to flock sections of the board, but you get the basic idea.  I wanted an 8'x4' table, but that would probably be too big.  I also plan on finishing that section of the basement as well and put some shelving under the table to store terrain.

The next Everchosen of Chaos

I have a whole bunch of pictures to publish of my Daemons and my new Gaming table, but they will have to wait a bit for the coming of the next Everchosen has arrived this Thanksgiving morning. I predict he will be the next Bobby Fisher of Warhammer!

Finally!

I finished up my first unit of 30 Daemonettes this last week.  I started the first 10 basic troops back in the summer, but I could not motivate myself to finish them.  I found some shortcuts with my painting technique for the Core troops of the army.  Basically, I prime grey, then give a black wash.  Instead of starting with a dark grey and working up like I did on the Soul Grinder.  So I painted 17 of them in a assembly line and went back and lightened the skin tone of the ones I had already completed.

Thanks to Bull City Wargaming Podcast to get me motivated again to start painting.

Here is the whole unit.

My BSB, the only thing in the army that will have a different color than 3 used on everything else.  I still cannot decide what to put on it.  Right now I am thinking about some stitching and some faces peering out.  I am terrible at freehand, so any ideas are welcome.

Here are some basic troopers so you can see what I have been doing.  Some of the heads come from the Seekers kit.

Something Fun

Here is something that I have had in my collection for a long time.  It is an Armorcast terrain piece that I think is now OOP.  It took longer for the wash to dry, than to actually paint it.

Monster Mash Continued

Happy Halloween!  As promised, here are some pics of some monsters I painted over the summer while up in NYC.

First up in the Cockatrice.  This was a fun model to paint.  Something different and the reason why the left wing droops is that I left this model at Newark Airport on a 105 degree weekend in the sun.  I was late for my plane and forgot to cover him.  So anyone who says Finecast warps is right, but the temp in my truck was probably 120 degrees all during a 3 day weekend.  According to all those whiners, this should have been a puddle.
Image

Image
Next I always wanted to paint up a giant.  I painted him so I can use him for both my Chaos Army and my Ogre Kingdoms Army.
Image

Image
Then I painted up the Lord on Manticore.  Anyone who has assembled this will understand how GW did a fantastic job designing the head of this piece. I think there were 3 or 4 layers just to the mane.  The model is pretty worthless in game, but my goal to have all the non-SC units in the book is almost complete.  I think all I lack are Chaos Trolls, a Chaos Dragon, and the new releases.

My friend Rufus bought me the Avatars of War Chaos Lord while he was out and about down in SC a few months ago.  Last week I finally painted him up while painting the Soul Grinder.  I didn't like the sword or shield so I converted the sword with a Mace from a Chaos Knight and the shield from the Manticore kit above.  I have been using him as my Level 4 Death Sorcerer.  My WoC Army has always been my Word Bearers of Fantasy, so it is only fitting I have a Dark Apostle to lead them.  Looking at these pics I think I might do another highlight on white to bring out the bone a bit more.

Hope you Enjoy!  Next up is a scenery piece and more Daemons!

Monster Mash

I have been working on my Soul Grinder for the painting competition over at Bull City Wargaming.  So here it is.

The colors I use are the following:
Blue - Enchanted, Teclis, Ice, Etherium (Drybrush), and then Guilliman (Glaze)
Grey - Mechanicus Standard, Black Wash, Stormvermin Fur, Dawnstone. Fortress, and Longbeard (Drybrush)
Yellow - Iyanden, Yriel, Sunburst, Bleached Bone

The photos flashed out the grey a bit.  I think it looks more blended under normal lighting. Only conversions are the tongue and shield in the front.  The tongue is from the spawn kit, which I stole the idea from the WD article a month or so ago.  I kept the torso and abdomen the same grey as I wanted to keep the colors simple.  I am still only using those three colors for my entire Daemon Army.  I feel Daemons don't use metal, they use what they interpret metal to be from our own minds.  Daemons are our fears come real, and in my opinion they follow different laws of physics than our own material plane.

I am really enjoying the new drybrush paints and glazes, and I think my painting has improved overnight.  Enjoy!  I have a whole slew of monster pictures that I painted over the summer which I will post in a few days.

Something looks familiar about that pic

Today I saw a picture of the new WOC warshrine. I must say I am glad GW was inspired by yours truly.  FYI I made my warshrine before the 7th ed book was even released back when it was just rumored to be in the army book.

Oh when the "Saints"....

Image
Here is a picture of my Daemonette Musician that I entered in over at Bull City Wargaming. Not the best quality photos, but you get the idea.

And here is one of the standard Daemonettes in the unit. I really need to set aside some time to paint. I have been staring at these guys for months. Then there are some chariots to paint along with a Soulgrinder.

The Nighmare Awakens

Image

“Your nightmares follow you like a shadow, forever. ”

― Aleksandar Hemon, The Lazarus Project

Some of you know that I have been working on a new army for the last couple of months. Now after getting everything assembled, I started painting last week on my mono-Slaanesh list.  I had been trying out several paint themes, but none on them tickled my fancy.  I wanted them to be dark and scary, not bright and pastel.  I wanted something different than pink and purple.  I imagine a Daemon army materializing out of the Etherium or your closet in the night, so I did not want to use metalics in my army (unless Khorne, but I won't have Khorne in a Slaanesh army).  The theme also had to be within my painting ability.

Since DC Comics rebooted all their comics a few months ago, I have been reading all the Batman comics, and it struck me.  That is the image I wanted.  So I was inspired to theme my army around the older Batman colors!  Dark grey, blue, and yellow.  EUREKA!

So without further adieu, here is the Alluress for my first unit:

Image
So far I have only painted about 10 models and a BSB.  I am not too happy with the banner of my BSB since I am not very good at freehand, but I will try and get some photos of this unit up in the next few days.

Happy Gaming!

Boom Boom Boom

Well, I'm back. Here are some pics of my Ogre Army I used back at Brawler Bash V. I went 3-2 with this army and lost Game 5 on Table 3 to Ben and his Beastman Army (Ben won the GT btw). BBV was too long ago, and my memory sucks from too many concussions, so I will not bore you with details.  Most of this army was made from my 7th ed list, with a few added command groups, Firebelly, Ironblaster, and Thundertusk.  (No mournfangs)

Here's my Thundertusk:

Here is my Firebelly, I used the plastic Balrog's sword instead of the FB hammer, and the hilt is made from a spare Gutplate.  I do not have a painted photo, but I am quite pleased with how he turned out.  One of the best models imho that GW has made, even though the head doesn't fit that well.
Image
My Ogres are pretty much done for now.  I am currently working on a mono-Slaanesh list (with lots of new toys for them this week).  With WoC coming out this Fall, I do not think the Ogres will get much playtime.  This army is the best painted army I own., and I am quite proud of it.  One day I may go back and do a final highlight on the skin tone, but we shall see.

Well, that is all, I am stuck up in NYC working a lot of hours, so painting time has been limited, but here is a view from my "office/trailer" window.  And yes, I can look up her robes :)  The Park Police got quite a kick for the first week I was there at the security checkpoints getting onto Ellis Island.  Every day they went through my work truck trying to figure out what all these half naked and clawed models were in a case that looked like a "gun case".  Sometimes it is hard to explain the hobby.  Now I just leave all my hobby supplies at the place I am staying.
