So what is Project Marlborough?

Image
I visited Blenheim Palace quite a few years ago and can recall seeing the tapestries depicting Marlborough's great victories.  At the time I was rather more interested in the present rather than the 18th Century but the images were securely lodged in the back of my mind.

A few years later and I was wondering about starting a new larger scale project (in scope rather than figure size) in 15mm and the 18th Century was clearly one option.  I did consider the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War (particularly the latter as I already have some suitable figures from my French & Indian Wars project) but then the image of those tapestries at Blenheim came to mind and I decided I should do some reading about John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.

It was that initial reading which fascinated me.  It was clear that the challenges facing John Churchill during the War of the Spanish Succession were enormous and that he needed not only to be a master strategist and tactician but also a clever diplomat.  I was hooked and so Project Marlborough was born.

Along with my other project blogs - Project Montrose and Project Mutiny - this is something of an experiment. At it's heart it's somewhere for me to report progress, however slow, on the project but also to capture material I am gathering for scenarios and actually gaming the period. It's not, I hasten to add, a substitute for posts on The Wargame Shed but rather to complement them. I hope that provide something of use to others interested in this intriguing period.
