Education in Displacement
Seven refugee-led organisations (RLOs) are transforming their communities by delivering formal education initiatives to refugee children. The schools run by the RLOs, are providing over 2,071 children with unique and quality education opportunities that can help them build better futures. At a global level, UNHCR estimate that half of the 3.5 million refugee children of primary school age do not go to school. This can have severe developmental and psychosocial impact on these young people on top of their experiences of being forcibly displaced. Formal education systems in refugee-hosting countries often cannot meet the demands, as well as there being multiple barriers for refugees enrolling in schools. RLOs are playing a vital role in closing these gaps, however their expertise in delivering formal education is not always formally recognised.Refugee-led organisations are working to ensure that the next generation of children can build better futures for themselves. They want to build more classrooms, ensure teachers are trained properly, and ensure that children can access learning in safe spaces that nurture and protect them. These organisations are coming together despite these challenges to serve their communities meaningfully. Find out more about the progress they’ve made below and read their stories of collective change. The more support they receive, the more they will be able to improve the quality of the learning experience and enroll more children in their schools. Be part of the change and donate today.

The M23 armed group has intensified its offensive in the eastern region, capturing key cities including Goma and Bukavu. Climate Resilience
The Climate Resilience Collective is a growing network of refugee-led and community-based organisations reshaping what climate action looks like in displacement-affected contexts across 10 African countries. (Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe)Together, these organisations are reaching over 46,000 people, nearly 70% of them women, through integrated, community-led interventions that build resilience from the ground up. These efforts combine regenerative agriculture, ecosystem restoration, clean energy solutions, and diversified livelihoods into interconnected responses to a climate crisis that is already reshaping daily life. Across the collective, communities are restoring soils, conserving water, and rebuilding degraded ecosystems through agroecology, agroforestry, and nature-based solutions. Agricultural waste is being transformed into energy, while tree planting is serving both ecological restoration and income generation. At the same time, innovative practices such as hydroponics, urban farming, and drought-tolerant crop production are enabling adaptation in resource-constrained environments.Environmental restoration remains a core pillar, with investments in reforestation, community nurseries, and land rehabilitation. These efforts are reinforced by circular economy approaches, including briquette production and clean cooking solutions that reduce environmental pressure while expanding energy access.A strong emphasis is placed on community-led learning systems, including demonstration farms, farmer field schools and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange that ensures sustained adoption and local ownership of climate adaptation practices. To strengthen economic resilience, organisations are supporting diversified livelihood strategies ranging from horticulture and poultry to beekeeping, aquaculture and emerging green enterprises. These are complemented by savings groups, cooperatives and financial inclusion mechanisms that enhance community self-reliance.Refugee communities remain on the frontline of the climate crisis, facing compounded vulnerabilities due to displacement, limited resources, and precarious living conditions. Strengthening their resilience is foundational to both immediate survival and long-term stability.
