Terrain – cities of death update, scatter terrain

Hey all

Work continues on the table. Although all the terrain for this table is technically scatter terrain, they’ve all got relatively set positions on the board. But, I also want some terrain that can be placed wherever I want on the table to change things up and add a bit more variation.

So, a few pieces of urban scatter terrain are called for. These are all designed to be placed over the roads and sidewalks, and most are designed to represent ‘battle field’ terrain, like tank traps, barricades, etc. These were heaps of fun to make and mainly made from junk in my bitz boxes.

A large statue will be placed in the center of the table, but I want several smaller ones to be placed around it, forming a large plaza in front of the Hall of Judgement. The smaller statues will just be various 28mm models, but to make them a bit more imposing I’m going to mount them on plinths. I tried my hand at a bit of woodworking and came up with a fairly simple plinth. I’ll make four of these, one for each corner of the plaza.

Four of these will act as plinths for more statues across the city

Finally, I’ve also added a little more detail to the Hall of Judgement. I imagine an Imperial Judge sitting in a throne at the head of the chamber, dispensing punishments to all those brought before him.

Terrain – Cities of Death update

Hey all

Just a quick update today. I’ve made a couple of extra buildings for the cities of death table. These ones are smaller, designed for the 18cm x 48cm bases.

First up is the Hall of Records. This building will probably sit next to the Hall of Judgement, and contains all the records for the penal system.

Next up is a munitions bunker that will be placed with the Adeptus Arbites sector house. This building was heavily inspired by the Cities of Death terrain over on thepaintingbunker.

Terrain – Cities of Death update

Hey all

Sorry for the delay between posts. Life has been remarkably hectic of late, with both a new job and a new house. But, the new place has a giant garage which I’ve claimed in the name of the Emperor for my new hobby cave. It should be fantastic, and large enough for a permanent apocalypse table if I want one (which I do). So, although there hasn’t been much time, I’m super psyched about getting stuff happening. To that end, I’ve managed to find a little bit of time between moving to keep the city fight table creeping along.

The basic shells of the three main buildings are mostly done, so I’ve begun work on the bases they’ll be sitting on. I find a common problem with cities of death tables is there can often be very little cover for infantry at ground level, unless they’re actually inside a building. This is one of the things I wanted to address on this table, and so I’ve decided to have several of the buildings siting on raised areas of pavement. This should give infantry on the roads something to potentially hide behind, as well as add emphasis to the buildings and make them even more of a feature.

I’ve used blue foam for this, as it’s like polystyrene only much stronger and more durable. I’ve then mounted it on thin sheets of MDF board. As I mentioned earlier, all of these bases will be set at specific sizes, which should help the modularity of the final table.

Each of the three table boards are 60cm x 120cm (which is the metric version of 2’x4′), combining for a 6’x4′ table. The basic footprint I’m using for the city blocks is 48cm x 48cm. Two blocks will be placed on each board, one in each half. There will be 6cm on every side of the block, and 12cm in between them. When combined with the 6cm free on the adjacent boards, this will result in 12cm roads across the table.

Other block footprints will be 48cm by 54cm. These will be for the largest buildings, and will simply lose the 6cm road to one side of the building. This can either be placed on the edge of the table, or will just result in a one lane road adjacent to one side of the building. I’ll also be using blocks with an 18cm x 48cm footprint. Two of these will result in a block the same size as the standard block, with a 12cm road in between them.

At least that’s the theory!

Now, onto some pics. First up is the base for the Hall of Judgement. Just the basic structure at the moment, so still needs lots of details.

And the Chamber of Administration on its base.

And finally, I want a statue for the center of the table. Hopefully this should be a good centerpiece. It should also be open enough to allow some line of site across the table while still giving cover for infantry.

So, lots of progress, but lots more to go!

A.C.T. of Heresy

Hey all

Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend the A.C.T. of Heresy 30k gaming event in Canberra. First off, I just want to say what a fantastic gaming event this was. Great opponents, amazing terrain, and some brilliant armies. The event was organised by Andrew Hollis and was part of the Rallying of Trugoy series of events. If you have the chance to go to any of these events, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I took a camera with me and managed to take a few pics between games. This lot is mainly of the armies on display, but I’ll post some in-game pics later on as well. Hope you enjoy!

Cheers guys!

Terrain – Cities of Death

Hey all!

Happy new year to everyone! For me it’s been pretty crazy, with a new job and soon to be a new house as well.

It’s been a busy few weeks (for most of the civilized world, I think), but still managed to get a little more progress on the table done. This will be the last of the large buildings for it, at least for now. I’m calling this building the Hall of Judgement, and will basically be where Imperial officials cast judgement upon those brought before them (I suspect trials are short and noticeably one-sided in the 41st millennium).

They’re pretty lousy picture, but hopefully more to come in the near future.

Anyway, just a quick update, but at least the table is starting to have some solid looking buildings on it. Next step will be to add the first level of detail to them.

Cheers guys

Terrain – Cities of Death update

Merry Christmas to all!

Or happy holidays, festive season, whatever you prefer!  I hope you all have a great holiday season and a fantastic new year. I’d like to give a huge thanks to everyone who’s checked out my blog over the last little while, and hopefully there should be lots of great stuff to come next year.

In the mean time, here’s another building for my cities of death table.

Terrain – Cities of Death

Hey all

I’ve decided it’s time for something a bit different. Terrain! I first tried making terrain many years ago and the results were, to be generous, less than stellar. But, given I want to try and get some more games in,  a table seems like a step in the right direction.

I was going to start with something fairly easy like a moonscape or something, but then decided that would be boring. So, I’ve gone straight to something harder, but way more fun: cities of death. I love the GW kits, even if they are fairly expensive. They look great, and are versatile enough to allow a bit of flexibility in their design and construction.

One of the hardest questions for me was whether to focus on scatter terrain or large, integrated buildings designed to work with specific base boards with raised pavements/recessed rivers/sewers etc. I think the more integrated table designs look the best, however scatter terrain is by far the more versatile option. In the end I’ve opted to do something in between the two.

My intention is to use scatter terrain, all of which will have a footprint cut to a specific size. These pieces of scatter terrain will be designed to be placed in the center of the 2′ by 4′ boards, leaving the edges clear. These edge sections will be one road lane wide, thus creating a full size road when the boards are placed together. The different buildings will have different footprints, but all designed to leave these uniform sized ‘blank’ roads running between them. It works in my head, now I just need to make it work on the table…

Also, each building will have its own base, allowing me to put more detail around it such as raised pavement etc. I’d like to do some more complex stuff for the table base boards, but I think we’ll work up to that over time.

Another thing I’m trying to keep in mind is I want this table to be able to expand out into apocalypse scale games. This will probably mean eventually making several tables, all following the same footprint templates, that can be combined together. I’m only making three for the moment, but I do want the option for more in the future.

Anyway, here is the first of the buildings. The table will be cities of death, however themed around an administration and judicial district of the city. As such, I want all the buildings to reflect that in some way. The table will have three large buildings initially, with several smaller ones as well as some scatter terrain to fill it out.

First up is the Adeptus Arbites precinct house. I’m really happy with how this has come out so far.

So, lots to do!

Horus the Warmaster

Hey guys

Another primarch! And this time it’s THE primarch: Horus the Warmaster himself. Unfortunately, Horus isn’t actually mine. He belongs to a friend of mine, but I managed to convince him to let me paint him.

This is the third primarch I’ve been able to paint and I have to say this is my favorite of the bunch so far. The model is just beautiful and it was a joy to paint. Anyway, on to pictures!

Mortarion

Hey all

Something a bit different today. With the Imperial Fists done I’ve decided to do a few little random projects before settling on something more substantial.

I love the primarch models and I’ve been wanting to do a few more of them for a long time now. This seemed like a great time, and my girlfriend was nice enough to buy me Mortarion as a present as further incentive.

Mortarion2

This is a gorgeous model and I had a great time painting him. I’m not sure if this will lead to more death guard models, although it is tempting. I suppose time will tell on that one…

Imperial Fists – Finished!

Hey all!

Big day! After around two and a half years, the Imperial Fists are pretty much finished. I’m really happy with how the army has come up, and it’s definitely been worth all the blood, sweat and tears that went into it. In total the army can field 11,000 points of Horus Heresy goodness, which I’m very proud of.

Now, no army is ever finished, and most notably this army is missing Sigismund and Dorn. Dorn obviously hasn’t been released yet, but I intend to get him as soon as he becomes available. Sigismund is sitting on my desk however, waiting for some attention. I’m sure I’ll want to add other bits and pieces as well, but for now I’m calling it done!

Army1

So, time to figure out where to go from here. I have plans for several more Horus Heresy armies, however I think next up I’ll make some terrain for a new table or two. My existing terrain is ancient and frankly embarrassing to put on the table, so time for an upgrade!
