A guide

Tour-GuideI posted this write-up on my guilds forums, and then in response to someone’s request for advice on the official forums. I think there are 3 players who have stuck with their SW in my guild, and they’re both scout, so this applied to them as much as directions on how to knit would. On the forums, a mod gave me the perverbial “good game” ass-slap, so I figured I’d fianlly put this up for all the world to see. After all, this is a Shadow Warrior-centric site, right? In any matter, I hope that if there are any Shadow Warriors who come through here, looking for general advice on how to play as what I think is the most fun style in the game, that this little diatribe of mine will help shed some understanding on how we work.

Cautiosly optomisitic in a sea of fear

debbie_downerThere are a whole lot of angry and fearful players of Shadow Warriors on the various forums. I can see their side in this very easily. We were told time and again that the second phase would have the RDPS changes for the game put in. Then Mythic drops the, “Just kidding!” bomb on us, and lets us know we have to wait for the THIRD phase of testing, along with the Squig Herders. The message that this delivers to the SW community isn’t that you’re taking the time to do it right, or that we need so few changes that it could wait till last, it’s that you left us till last because you seem to not know what to do. This problem is only going to get compounded by the fact that we will now have the shortest time to test any changes. An extra slap in the face is this “incentive” program to be get on the PTS and help out with the progression. What incentive does any SW player have to get on there right now, other than to help out someone ELSE test their character. Even that would be a poor decision, given that those tests would give incredibly skewed results.

I tried it, and I liked it

thumbs-upSo, I went back to give my DoK a whirl with the spec I talked about in my previous post. It was fun. I didn’t feel any undo pressure from other players to keep them alive. I had a good time running around at the front line and doing a little bit of combat and healing. I managed to pull out an Annihilators Breastplate from a keep take. Plus, I looked amazing. Disciples are still one of the better looking classes in my opinion. So I had sex appeal, fun play, and decent to better functionality. Given all that, I don’t know if I’m going to switch over just yet.

Scratch Scratch Scratch

scratch1I’m feeling an itch. It’s an odd itch. I’m starting to think back as my time as a DoK, and thinking of all the different cool things I can do with him as they stand now. I’ve been poking about with a build calculator, and just reminiscing about how cool it could actually be to be a front line fighter who heals through damage. I saw a build on the forums, that really lit the fire under me, and got the wheels turning so to speak. Would I be a pretty selfish healer still? Yes, but tough cookies, if you want heals, it’s important that I keep myself up as well, you’ll get my spill overs. This isn’t like before, when I just transferred over my characters to see the new server and maybe a city siege, no… this is a genuine interest in playing another character as more than just a passing hobby.

Whoopie

New State of the Game post from Mr. Jacobs hit us yesterday. There are a few things I’m happy to read about, but really? Not a single mention of Shadow Warriors? We were the least looked at class in 1.2, 1.2.1 you admit has no eyes coming to us, and 1.3 you have no intention of so much as giving us a once over? This is freakin’ ridiculous. If something dosen’t start happening soon to compensate for the glaring flaws and sevre areas of underperformance for this class, I’m gone. No more playing your game, and no more blog. I’m quickly passing the point of just mild frustration, I’m rapidly approaching genuinely angry. I will not make a new main, I will not go through it all over again with a new focus. Six months in, and you’re on the precipice of loosing a DEVOUT fan.

Get your shit together and at least acknowledge us with admitance of the numerous problems this class faces.

Oh, but it’s hard

witch-hunterI’m trying not to be insanely jealous. Really, I am. Mythic is making it more and more difficult as time goes by though. First I see Engineers getting nothing but mad-love, and everyone and their sister squabbling for lack of them. They want magnet pullers, and crazy AoE grenades. Visions of Napalm flash in their eyes. Now Bright Wizards are fuckin’ ridonculous. We had a group in one warband of five Bright Wizards and one Warrior Preist. They wrecked house, and not only melted faces, but the bone beneath the face as well. I saw puddles of destruction players evaporate into the air it was so god-damn hot in there. I can live with this, I’ll be unhappy, but I can live with it. So, maybe I’m lowest on the totem-pole of ranged damage classes, well, at least I can compete with Witch Hunters… oh wait.

Beware the Shadow

shad6Oh how I wish people did. I don’t particularly see us as a feared class. I don’t recall anyone bemoaning the kill-power of the Shadow Warriors when I played on the side of Destruction. I also don’t see us WTF-PWNing enemies all of the time. I do see us falling pretty quickly, but is that just my own view of things? Is the reason for the small amount of changes to our class in the 1.2 patch notes because we are already are considered to be a well balanced class? Read more of this post

The better part of valor…

sir-robinShadow Warriors are squishy.

I know, I know, it looks  like we’re wearing chain mail, and so, should have a medium rating, but we don’t. We wear light armor, and as far as I’m aware, so do the other casters (nothings lighter than light, ya’ know?). Sure, we can go into assault spec, and have our armor doubled, but that limits our range and puts us into melee combat. Something that should be counter to the idea of how we are supposed to accomplish our task of “shooting you in the face”™. I’ve got a couple suggestions that I think would would help greatly alleviate some of the problems we as a class are currently facing. From the Choppa’ Block

The community at large has been eagerly awaiting the release of the last two classes for WAR. After the successful release of the Black Guard and the Knight of the Burning Sun, people have been clammering for the damage delivering devils of Destruction, and Order (I told you about that alliteration thing). Until semi-recently, no-one was particularly fired up about Order’s Dwarven Hammerer. Probably because he was as awesome as a slap in the face. Read more of this post

Deceptive Design

ImageSo, I know from my start as a Shadow Warrior that I rolled this class because I wanted to be a ranged damage class (RDPS). I remember vividly from the production videos that this was to be a class that was all about the bow. Paul Barnett standing in front of the camera going “Bow, bow, bow!”. Read more of this post
