Important Lessons

ImageLast night, I went out to scout some systems in my Buzzard for a corp-mate going to hi-sec with shopping list. If you’ve ever seen the movie The Beach, this is an event similar to when Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton go out to pick up the necessities for the inhabitants of their jungle paradise home. Well, in one system I was going ahead to scout, I came out of the gate, in my default cloak.

Some things I was not aware of:

  1. Gate cloaks only last 30 seconds.
  2. You cannot use a cloaking device once you are targeted.
  3. You cannot use a cloaking device to override the gate cloak with your own.

Oh, how three small pieces of information could have made a world of difference for my poor carion-eater-inspired ship. You see, as I was relaying the information to the corp mate who was waiting to see what the status was, my gate cloak dropped, and the enemy sitting on the gate had a sensor booster to insta-lock me and then take me out in just a few short volleys. By the time I realized what was going on, I was into structure, and then quickly saying good-night to my pretty, pretty ship.

After a few moments of cursing and vitriol, I asked in vent what went wrong, and the three listed information points were made clear to me. As well as a good method of (more) safely traveling in a cloaked ship.

Eve is a harsh teacher, and as frustrating as it can be at times, you can usually learn something from every encounter.

War-dec’d

ImageMy corporation in EVE got war-dec’d over the holiday break. For those unfamiliar, that means another player-run corporation (guild) decided they wanted to declare war on us and blow us up as much as possible. Essentially, it initiates PvP with us, and lets them kill us without fear of the games authorities intervening, or taking huge hits to their security status, and all it costs is some money. The name of the aggressing corporation is Concentrated Evil, and from what little I have seen, they are a merc group, and were either hired to take us out for some reason or just to grief us till all our members leave, or they think we’re soft targets they can pad their kill-numbers with. In EVE the reasons for declaring war can cross an entire chasm of reasons.

If they want to keep up the war, the will have to (if memory serves me) pay each week to keep the declaration active. They’ve gotten a few kills on some of our missioners, but we snagged a kill on their CEO yesterday, so we’ve bit back. They are eventually going to have to decide if paying to fight a group of players who fight back is economically profitable as well as goal-rewarding.

Part of this whole thing, means corp mates went ahead and purchased a Manticore for me to scout with and blow up any targets I may see, and there are others in the corporation who also are flying manticores, so we may just have a sneaky group of stealth-bombers launching torpedoes all willy-nilly at any red-flagged player we find roaming our home systems. I’m hoping for this to prove an interesting experience for me in my EVE play, and to get some valuable real-world PvP experience in how war-decs and corp-fighting goes.

Incursion Proceeding

ImageYesterday, players of EVE found the skill points for their learning skills completely refunded. I had pushed the date of this even happening to the back of my mind, and so when I was checking my Capsuleer app on my iPhone yesterday afternoon, I had a mini-freakout when I was reported 2 million SP short. A handful of quick breaths later, and my memory caught up to my hysteria and throttled it soundly for being so excitable. I was left with a decision after that though: where to spend my point?

Being already heavily trained in Caldari ships, and missiles in general, I’ve been putting an eye towards flying a Manticore in the future for sneaky stealth-bombing fun. However, with Incursion’s release, there was a significant increase in the performance of rockets on the whole, and the Hawk was given an overhaul in tandem to it. Well, this seemed like a good opportunity to prepare to fly both of those ships. The base skill to fly them had already been achieved, and so, I had the last two levels for their specialization skills to polish off (Covert-ops and Assault Ships respectively). Finishing the learning of each of these is a great way to maximize the bonuses of the ship without all the hassle of waiting around for them.

I’m looking to the Hawk as a potentially strong PvP solo ganking ship. Rockets can pack a heck of a punch (especially now), and while it’s not as fast as it’s Rifter counterparts, it still has some decent speed on it. All of this is purely just theory on my end so far, but the potential is there, and I’m curious to see where this particular train of focus drops me off at. In the meantime, I’m doing missions, earning isk, and trying to be active with my corporation, and learning new things every day. As much as I’ve played this game, I still feel like there are a lot of areas where I still have things to learn and that will have a significant impact on how I play or percieve the game.
