WAR UI questions

Werit tipped me into this questionnaire from Mr. Casey.

1.  What method do you use to move around in game.  (ex. WASD, Arrow Keys, Mouse Button 1+2, etc.)

I also use a N52te game pad and had the d-pad mapped to the arrow keys. However, I also sometimes use the right+left mouse buttons to steer when my left hand is too busy.

2.  What method do you use to control your camera movement. (ex. 1st person mode, mouse RB, etc.)

Right mouse.

3.  What method do you use to fire off your abilities (ex. Click on abilities, click on number corresponding to hotbar, mouse buttons, etc.)

I have all my buttons mapped on my n52te.

4.  What method do you use to target your enemy targets (ex. Tab, click, combination, etc.)

I have a button mapped to cycle enemy targets. Very rarely, would I click on them, and when I had to, it made me angry every time.

5.  What method do you use to target your friendly targets (ex. Hotkey, click on person, click on group/warband, Function keys, etc.)

Click their name in group/warband.

6.  What method do you use to fire off your tactics/morales. (ex. Hotkey, click, etc.)

Mouse click – I always meant to bind them, but could never find the room for them on my game pad.

7.  What mods do you use to assist in any of the above and how do they benefit you? (ex. Squared, etc.)

Group icons for sure and unit frames (Pure) are a necessity. The actual method of  clicking and targeting was all done through base game functionality. I didn’t use any special assist mod or anything of that nature.

8.  Breakdown of your play sessions. (ex. 50% ORVR, 30% Scenarios, 20% PVE, etc.)

It was usually about 20% ORvR and 80% Scenarios.

9.  What one thing would improve your ability to control, target, or interact with the game? (please limit it one specific item)

Increasing the targeting range with tab/cycle target/etc… As I said above, I would get incredibly frustrated when trying to pick one guy out of a crowd from 100′ away on a ranged character. From that distance, the target to click was small, and usually jumbled with a bunch of other targets around them – and you could not cycle through targets to get them because the range on that function was about 65′ or so. It made me fume every time.

Something there that wasn’t there before

I'm a dad, I play disney for my daughter in the car. She loves it. Get over it.

As I’m sure you’re all aware, last night was the opening of the open Beta for Rift. You may also recall my relatively luke-warm reception of the game. I’ve said it elsewhere, but I can’t recall if I explicitly stated it here, I had zero intention of playing the game at launch, or after launch. It was a good, clean, crisp, well polished rehashing of everything I’ve done in the past in every other themepark fantasy game. My excito-meter wasn’t exactly breaking the glass. In fact, I hadn’t even played any of the close beta’s beyond the third when I made my UI video, my disinterest was that low.

Last night, saw me in the game. A strange confluence of events left me with no other outlet of MMO-dom. Both EVE and CoH had patches to download that required a whole 10s of minutes, and I’m damned if I’m going to wait around that long to play a game. My wife was happily dominating time on our PS3, playing the copy of Katamari Forever I got for her birthday. WAR, I found out, my subscription had ended, and I didn’t feel a particular urge to re-up, as I hadn’t even played in a number of weeks, and couldn’t recall when my sub had actually expired (I’ll revisit this later).  So, I looked at my Rift icon, thought, what the heck, I’ll start the patcher and see which game wins in the patch-race.

Rift finished first.

More on Darkfall

ImageIn the times between spitting my lungs out of my chest thanks to the ever-wonderful “Maximum Strength Mucinex DM”, I found that I was able to dabble a bit more with Darkfall, and I’m liking the game, despite some of it’s very serious draw backs, but I don’t think I’ll end up there for any serious amount of time, until those drawbacks are fixed, but I’ll most likely finish out my 14-day trial. I find I’m becoming less tolerant of some issues the more I game, and I have to wonder if that’s why I’m less of any MMOs right now, including EVE and WAR. Besides the point though, I want to talk about the things in Darkfall that really bothered me.

The ol’ college try

ImageLast night, in a Sudafed and NyQuil fueled stuper, I decided to try a game I haven’t really given a fair shake in the past. It’s not a huge triple-A developed venture, and is extremely small population-wise, but it’s something that’s been sticking around and picking up players as it goes. It’s also a sandbox and non-level based, which is a fun twist from the classic MMO structure. I went into it, not really sure what to expect, but I wanted to keep an open mind. The game, (if you hadn’t guessed by now) is Darkfall.

Dun, dun, DUN.

Rift UI Elements

Here’s a short video I did from the Rift beta event #3. In it, I go over most of the UI elements of the game, and talk a bit about how the work, and the value of each. Trion did a great job of taking a lot of ideas and implemented concepts from various MMOs and integrating them into their game. Of particular note, is the customization of the UI layout they took from WAR. Too frequently, that aspect of Warhammer is overlooked, which is a shame, as the UI developed by Mythic is what I consider to be one of its largest achievements when they developed the game.

Follow the break for the video.

Project Fresh and Clean

ImageSo, from the various comments and tweets I received the other day, I decided to go with a Witch Elf to do my no-addon experiment with.  I really think you’re all just a perverted adolescents who wanted to see more girl-flesh running around the game, but hey, I give the audience what they wants. So, I spun up the character creator for Iron Rock, picked the best looking face, the most blatantly sexually-indicating tattoo, and did my best to get her name as close to “she” as possible (Schi for the record).

Once in game, I turned on the recorded, went through the painful process of making sure all of my addons wear deactivated, and then set up my UI. I swear to all that is holy and good, I think it took me about 5 minutes just to set everything up in a fashion similar to what I wanted. Then I did my key-binds for my n52te. Most of that was handled in the initial pass, but I did some slight tweaking here and there as I went about playing. I didn’t get far, only to L4/R4, but I think the bulk of the start-up is all over, so I’m hoping I can spend some time tonight playing her some more.

The goal with all of this is put together a video of the setup, and how mutable the interface is. While going through all of this, I’m sure I’ll find areas where the interface is lacking. Find is probably not the right word, re-discover why I got an addon to overcome a limiting feature might be a better phrase. As I find these things, I’ll create a video for it, and point out possible addons to help overcome the problem, and talk about the pros and cons of each.

For instance, I noticed last night that the buffs/debuffs are VERY difficult to read on the character portraits, particularly the number of stacks/durations. It’s a huge hindrance when trying to quickly identify a combat situation, and reading something half the size of my pinky nail on a 20″ screen at 1280×1024 resolution doesn’t work well. There are a lot of different addons that you can use to help you out with this. The one that I prefer the most for being reasonable in size, ease-of-use, and least intrusive is DuffTimer. There are other addons that will help you keep track of these things, and Aura comes to mind as one of the most popular for it’s in-your-face proclamations, but Duff’s low-profile information keeps my screen clear, which I appreciate.

Follow the jump for my short video.

On a completely unrelated topic

ImageI know, I know, you’re eagerly anticipating the post from me about my Mythic trip and all the wonderful candy and rainbows that I got to experience while there. I am too. In fact, the content post is all written and done. I’m just waiting on a review to make sure I didn’t accidentally cross the NDA line and say something I shouldn’t have. Black helicopters and strike teams coming down zip lines with flash-bangs and assault weapons don’t top my list of “visitors I’d like in my home”. So, I’m going to do a place-holder post. A place-holder post is something completely off-the-wall, usually trite and forgettable, and sometimes not really sincere. So, I want to make sure your expectations are in the right place when you read this.

I’m thinking of doing an experiment. I’m thinking of playing a character, from the brand-spanking new get-go, with absolutely zero add-ons. That’s right, no mods, no addons, no nothing. Just fresh, base, Mythic-created stock UI. I will use all the hardware at my disposal (regular mouse, regular keyboard, non-widescreen monitor :(, and my Belkin n52te). Now, I know what you’re saying. “Has Shadow gone completely off the deep-end?”. Iknowrite? I’m a huge advocate and fan of add-ons. Anyone who has paid attention to anything I’ve said would have to turn around, put those fancy white-noise headphones on, and wear a blindfold to miss my advocacy for the modding community as a whole. So why do it?
