Academy Award Nominations 2026 – who am I missing (Part 2)

Hey, guys!

Last month, this year’s Academy Award nominees were announced, including some surprises. Before I want to talk about my predictions for this year’s winners, we’re going to chat about people and movies I would have liked to see get a nomination. I already shared some of those thoughts last week, so here’s part 2!

Best Picture

Nominees:
Bugonia
F1
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
The Secret Agent
Sentimental Value
Sinners
Train Dreams

Three 2025 releases I enjoyed tremendously are Rental Family, Caught Stealing, and Wake Up Dead Man. All three are films where I couldn’t really name a single thing wrong with them, that have a strong script and even stronger performances.

Missing:
Rental Family
Caught Stealing
Wake Up, Dead Man

Best Director

Nominees:
Chloé Zhao, Hamnet
Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme
Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another
Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value
Ryan Coogler, Sinners

I don’t want to repeat myself too much, but we’re going to have a couple of repeat mentions in this post. Rian Johnson has done such a good job with all the Knives Out movies. Granted, I wasn’t really expecting Wake Up Dead Man to get any Oscars love, but he would certainly deserve the recognition. With Caught Stealing, I would have expected the film to at least crop up in one or two categories. Aronofsky should have been nominated for delivering one of the coolest and most badass films of 2025. Frankenstein, on the other hand, is nominated a couple of times but is notably absent in the Best Director category. Sure, you can critize the movie for a few things, but del Toro really should have made the cut.

Missing:
Rian Johnson – Wake Up Dead Man
Darren Aronofsky – Caught Stealing
Guillermo del Toro – Frankenstein

Californication: Season 3

Hey guys!

We’re *almost* halfway through Californication. Season 3 was not exactly what I had hoped for. Let’s discuss why that is the case…

The Plot (according to Rotten Tomatoes):

David Duchovny returns to series television in this adult sitcom as Hank Moody, an alcoholic, womanizing novelist struggling to help raise his precocious daughter, Becca, while still yearning for his sophisticated ex, Karen. Also featured in the show are Hank’s agent, Charlie, and his one-time wife, Marcy.

The Rating:

I feel like the premise of the show has more than overstayed its welcome. It was somewhat funny during the first season, but we’re on such a downhill trend here. Most importantly, it’s not just that it’s not funny anymore; any shred of credibility there ever was is way gone by now. How everybody swoons and sighs for Hank Moody is just ridiculous at this point. It’s downright stupid. I’m fairly certain I spent the vast majority of this season just rolling my eyes.

The thing is, Hank is getting less and less appealing with every damn episode, so it makes less sense that anybody would be this interested in him. Seriously, what are these women seeing in him? Californication just comes across as this male gaze-y dude bro fantasy. It feels *very* this was written by men. Were there any women on the team? No? Yes? Were they just ignored?

Best example: there is a scene in this season where Marcy clogs a toilet because she tried to flush a tampon. Mind you, this toilet was in her very own home. Excuse me. I’m sorry. Which woman on this planet would try to flush a tampon? I feel like everybody and their grandma knows that you do not fucking flush tampons. I watched that scene and just kept thinking, was there not a single woman in the vicinity of this production who might have offered an opinion on this?

Californication: Season 2

Hello, everybody!

We already discussed season 1 of Californication, but we have six more seasons to go. So let’s dive right in and see if we are on an uptrend or downtrend with #2!

The Rating:

Wow. Just, fucking wow. (derogatory)

I know I watched this show years and years ago. And I know I must have watched somewhere up to season three because I do remember something that happens later in the show. However, I seem to have absolutely no recollection of *anything* that happens this season. My brain just deleted all of it. And why already became abundantly clear within the first episode.

Yes, I was on the fence about season one. We had good and bad moments, with the bad ones being really cringy. This season, the quality really takes a turn for the worse, and there were so many scenes that I just outright hated. Let’s just tackle two things from literally the first episode, shall we? I guess this is your spoiler warning, so be prepared.

Academy Award Nominations 2026 – who am I missing (Part 1)

Hey, guys!

Recently, the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were announced. The list of movies and people definitely held some surprises. The beyond hyped up second part of Wicked, for example, ended up with zero nominations – which to me is no big loss, to be honest. However, there are some names I would have expected to see on the list (or at least would have liked to see them there, even though I know they were unlikely to make it). So, let’s talk about who got snubbed this year!

Best Actor

Nominees:
Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme
Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another
Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon
Michael B. Jordan, Sinners
Wagner Moura, The Secret Agent

While we have some great nominees in this category, there are quite a few I could think of that I would have loved to get more recognition. First of all, Jeremy Allen White. Granted, I wasn’t impressed with the Bruce Springsteen movie (Deliver Me From Nowhere) overall, but White’s performance was impressive and nuanced. Up next, we have Brendan Fraser. I think we can all agree that he is an incredibly talented actor, and I still get chills thinking about The Whale. Quite recently, Rental Family came to theatres over here. This is a movie I had heard zero press about, not even a trailer was screened any time I was at the cinema. As expected, Fraser nailed it once more, and this film really should not be flying under the radar. Bugonia is nominated in a few categories, but I am surprised that Jesse Plemons didn’t get listed. Sure, Emma Stone was great, but he was stellar. Next up, I want to talk about Daniel Craig. He starred in the latest Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man. To be fair, I didn’t have any grand hopes this film would crop up anywhere in the list of nominations, but Craig is an utter delight in this role, and I want him to get more praise for it. I didn’t expect to put Hugh Jackman on my list. When the nominees were announced, I hadn’t yet seen Song Sung Blue, only the trailer. Based on that, I was surprised to see Kate Hudson nominated – the trailer didn’t seem like that much. But yesterday I went to see precisely that movie and was floored by both their performances. Hudson definitely deserves her nomination but Jackman would have deserved one too. Finally, and I can’t believe I’m writing this, Dwayne Johnson. Here we are in the boat with Jeremy Allen White. The Smashing Machine was a messy film that could have been much better, but Johnson gave a performance so much better than anything I would have thought him capable of.

Missing:
Jeremy Allen White, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere
Brendan Fraser, Rental Family
Jesse Plemons, Bugonia
Daniel Craig, Wake Up Dead Man
Hugh Jackman, Song Sung Blue
Dwayne Johnson, The Smashing Machine

Best Actress

Nominees:
Jessie Buckley, Hamnet
Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Kate Hudson, Song Sung Blue
Renate Reinsve, Sentimental Value
Emma Stone, Bugonia

Overall, the list of nominees in this category is pretty darn good, but I have two additions I’d love to mention. First of all, Jennifer Lawrence. I didn’t particularly enjoy Die My Love, but she was so intense in it. Sally Hawkins creeped me out to no end with her performance in Bring Her Back, and I was thinking about that for quite a while after. So, definitely two leading ladies who deserve more recognition.

Missing:
Jennifer Lawrence, Die My Love
Sally Hawkins, Bring Her Back

Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 series I will finish in 2026

Hey, guys!
It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for a bookish favorites post. Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Meeghan over on Meeghan Reads and is quite simple: check out the topic and write a post with your picks.
Today, we’re talking about some book series I’m planning to finish this year. In fact, I read the first book for most of them a couple of years ago when I first got it in a subscription box. Obviously, at that time, the remaining books hadn’t yet been released. But better late than never, so here we are!

#1 A Forgery of Magic

I read the first book, Nocturna, in 2020. Now the trilogy is complete and I can finally get back into the series!

#2 Bone Grace

Bone Crier’s Moon was a novel that I completely devoured. The magic concept is unique, and the French setting ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’m excited to finally read part 2 of the duology!
