CD Review: New Zero God – Of love and death

NEW ZERO GOD is an Athenian four-piece band formed in March 2006 by Mike Pougounas with members that played with his former bands, FLOWERS OF ROMANCE and NEXUS. This is the fifth full length studio album of the band, the third concept album in a row.

The Greek rockers have put out another superb post punk albums. The dark messaging atmosphere lingers throughout, creating a chilling but vivid soundscape. This is a very lean album, there are 8 solid tracks, there are no filler tracks nor are there any dull moments.

Turning darkness into magic is a spooky unnerving opener. The dark brooding soundtrack underpinnings some echoing spoken words about madness.

Keep me safe starts all soft and calm with the word “relax” delivered gently, hen like a frog in a gradually boiling jug of water the music gradually gets faster and more chaotic with the words “relax” now sounding more panicked.

End of the ride brings in a deceptively upbeat vibe. The tunes bounce around playfully while exerting a rather menacing undertone. A bit sneaking into a closed down circus in the middle of the night.

Room 1316 brings in some early Cure vibes. The slow droning drums setting the tempo and guiding you into the hypnotic haze.

And I found you sounds like Type O Negative being remixed by Radiohead. Stripped back with curious spacey undertones and tops with Mike Pougounas Mike Pougounas’s deep melancholic baritone vocals. Everything works together nicely to create a dark and moving experience.

Lady wolf lifts the mood driven by the infectiously catchy bass line charging through!

Mr Crimson Dust is a slow burner, the music drifts in a light yet commanding manner, paired with the distressingly bleak lyrics that leave just enough to the imagination to create a heat braking narrative.

Tell it to the bees is almost like the warm down to the intense experience incurred over the previous tracks. The soft saxophone almost makes the music light hearted and chirpy to close the album on a kind of happy note.

This is not an album for the faint heated. The music hits heavy and the lyrics cut deep from start to finish and drag you through the dark and murky soundscape along the way.  Mike Pougounas has really put his souls into this one and it really shows as each track is fuelled with heartbreaking emotion.

This is the sort of bleakness that would match Joy Division and the Cure, but it also matches them both in terms of depth, atmosphere, and energy!
