About the Operation
Since its establishment in 1967, Matsusaka Refinery has been a leading producer of nickel oxide sinter (NOS) and Tonimet® briquettes in the Asia-Pacific region.
Located in Matsusaka City, the refinery processes about 60 kt of NOS and Tonimet® briquettes annually. Matsusaka’s products are supplies to customers across Japan as well as Vale Base Metals’ Clydach Refinery in the UK and clients worldwide.
Key Metrics
Innovation
Tonimet® briquettes are produced using a proprietary technology developed exclusively at Matsusaka utilizing a Fluid Bed Reactor. Leveraging its fluid bed roasting system, Matsusaka pioneered the world’s first oxygen reduction process, setting a new benchmark in nickel refining innovation.
Community
Our internal environmental and community protection standards go beyond national and local regulations.
One testament to this commitment is the fact that some of our employees—raised in the neighboring communities—grew up eating rice and seafood harvested from the fields and coastal waters surrounding the refinery. This reflects the high level of environmental stewardship Matsusaka maintains to ensure the safety and sustainability of the local ecosystem.
At Matsusaka, we value life and are deeply committed to safety, environmental stewardship, and quality management as core principles of our operations. Our practices are guided by the ISO-based policies that reflect our dedication to continuous improvement and responsible business conduct.
Health & Safety
We place the highest priority on life and safety. Our operations are driven by proactive risk management, ongoing improvement through employee involvement, voluntary participation in safety initiatives, and full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
Environment
We are committed to sustainable growth while respecting the planet and our local communities.
We work to prevent pollution, comply with environmental laws and standards, promote resource efficiency and waste reduction, and actively pursue carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction.
Quality
We strive to deliver high-quality nickel and sulfuric acid products that meet and exceed customer expectations. Our approach includes attentive customer engagement, continuous improvement of our quality management system, rigorous monitoring of all processes from raw materials to delivery, and strict compliance with relevant laws and product standards.
