Water electrolysis consists of two half-reactions, one being the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the other being the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In a decoupled electrolyser the evolution of oxygen and hydrogen gases are separated temporary or spatially. Decoupled electrolysis cell consists of the cell body, which is filled with electrolyte, in which the working electrode and the auxiliary electrode are immersed. In OER step the power supply is connected with the negative terminal to the auxiliary electrode and the positive terminal to the working electrode. At a certain potential, the oxygen evolution reaction starts on the OER/HER electrode and intercalation takes place on the auxiliary electrode, relasing O₂ gas in the cell. In HER step the polarity of the power source is reversed and at a certain potential, hydrogen evolution reaction takes place on the working electrode and deintercalation reaction on the auxiliary electrode, releasing H2 gas in the cell.

The process is cyclic, where in the first cycle, oxygen is produced on the working electrode and the auxiliary electrode of the red-ox mediator is reduced, and in the second cycle, hydrogen is released on the working electrode and the auxiliary electrode is oxidized.
