Snapping isn’t restoring.

Window snappers move one window when you ask. SnapState remembers the whole desk and rebuilds it. Most people use both.

Why SnapState exists

SnapState does one job: it saves the Mac window layouts you already use and puts them back after a restart, a monitor change or a context switch.

It is a small, focused utility. There is no subscription, and your workspace data stays on your Mac.

What does SnapState save?

SnapState saves windows on every macOS Space, the apps needed to relaunch them, your display topology, and all open tabs from each supported browser window.

Does SnapState need Accessibility permission?

Yes. macOS Accessibility permission lets SnapState read window positions and move windows back into place. SnapState does not need root access.

Which browsers are supported?

The current release can read and reopen all open tabs from Safari, Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Chromium, and Safari Technology Preview when Automation permission is granted.

Does it save all browser tabs and every macOS Space?

Yes to both. SnapState captures all open tabs in each supported browser window and restores layouts across multiple Spaces (apps go back to the Space they were saved on, full-screen windows return to full screen, and windows on other Spaces are placed when you switch to them). It does not save tab groups. Since 2.7.2, SnapState moves an app back to the desktop Space it was saved on when all of its saved windows belong on one Space. Limits: an app whose windows were saved on several Spaces is not split between them (those windows get their saved position when you switch to that Space), apps pinned with Dock > Options > Assign To are left to macOS, and Space moves use private macOS APIs, so behavior can vary by macOS version.

Using SnapState at home and at work

Save one workspace per location, for example Work with your office monitors connected and Home with your home monitors connected. Each workspace remembers the monitor setup it was saved with. Turn on the Matching saved display layout trigger for each workspace and pick Full, and SnapState restores the workspace whose saved monitors match the ones you just plugged in. Keep the Displays have separate Spaces setting the same in both places.

What happens when my monitors change?

SnapState compares the saved display topology with the current one and remaps saved window frames onto the available displays. You can also arm a workspace to react to display connect, disconnect, matching-layout, or wake events.

How much does SnapState cost?

SnapState is a $9.99 one-time purchase with a lifetime license for up to three Macs, free updates, and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Is SnapState free or open source?

No. SnapState is a paid app: $9.99 one-time for up to three Macs, with a 14-day money-back guarantee. Buy and download it at getsnapstate.com.

How does SnapState update?

SnapState updates itself with Sparkle. Use Check for Updates in the menu, or leave automatic updates on and new versions install for you.

Is SnapState a tiling window manager?

No. It doesn't snap single windows to halves or arrange them as you open them. It saves whole layouts and restores them, so it works well next to Rectangle, Magnet or macOS tiling.

Does it work with Firefox?

Firefox windows are moved back into place, but their tabs aren't saved yet.

Give your Mac a memory.

Every window, app and tab, back where you left it. Pay once and it’s yours.
