‘Dubai, UAE — Award-winning filmmaker, influencer, entertainer, and image maker Albert Santos Gayo has officially begun principal photography for his upcoming feature films Desert Butterfly and Sycamore Beige which is slated for entry at the prestigious Emirates Film Festival this April.

Based on a true story set in Bahrain in 1985, Desert Butterfly tells the poignant story of a man who was promised employment at a prestigious salon. Upon arrival at the airport, however, he was driven deep into the desert and assigned to look after animals instead — a powerful narrative that sheds light on untold stories of deception, sacrifice, and resilience among overseas workers.

Albert Santos Gayo, a multi-awarded Filipino filmmaker, seasoned event producer, and educator, has spent over 35 years in the creative industry championing cultural narratives and empowering artists. With deep roots in the Philippine entertainment industry, he later transitioned to the UAE, where he became a respected pillar in the Filipino and multicultural creative community.

Throughout his career, at least 15 of his short films have been officially selected and nominated in international film festivals across New York, the United Kingdom, Germany, Chicago, Sarajevo, Egypt, India, and other global platforms. He has written, produced, and directed many of these internationally screened works, consistently highlighting themes of dignity, resilience, and marginalized voices — particularly Overseas Filipinos.

In addition to Desert Butterfly, Gayo will also enter a second film at the upcoming Emirates Film Festival titled Sycamore Beige. The film follows the story of an administrative secretary who lives in two worlds — reality and imagination — and explores how her internal duality propels her forward in life. Also based on real-life inspiration, Sycamore is written and directed by Gayo and produced by Noreen Patarasa.

Both films are expected to premiere during the Emirates Film Festival this April, marking another milestone in Gayo’s international filmmaking journey.

Albert will be joined by a diverse production team composed of cameramen, sound and lighting professionals, actors, and actresses from various nationalities.
