How can you show shalom to someone in a distant place?
Is there an area of the world currently experiencing conflict to which you want to help bring a deep sense of peace? How might you consider doing that?
What are some resources that could educate and lead you to a greater pursuit of shalom for the world?

In the midst of our commitment to peace within ourselves and our community, we look beyond our neighborhood and our nation to consider peace within our world. It can feel daunting at times, as we are haunted by images and stories of war, violence, hate, and oppression. All too often, the stories we hear are driven by narratives that seek to vilify and divide rather than understand and unite.
Instead of perpetuating or advancing stories of conflict, let’s seek to recognize and value the humanity and life of every person God has created, as well as the harmony God intends for all things.
The ancient Hebrew word שָׁולֹם, which we know as “shalom,” is used to describe a deep level of peace, wholeness among all people and nations or, simply, the way things are supposed to be. This word is still commonly used in the Jewish faith and considered to be one of the most sacred values in Jewish culture.
We know how unsettling it feels when the world isn’t as it should be. There’s something inside of us that longs for peace, justice, equality, and mercy for all people. As we embrace the truth that we are people created for peace, our hearts are drawn to the relentless pursuit of shalom, seeing our broken world restored to reflect heaven on earth.
This week, we will be meditating on two passages of scripture found in John 17 and Psalm 133 Read this week’s scripture and notice what, in particular, stands out to you.
John 17:20-23 KJV

Peace has the power to transform our relationships and our communities. So: Let us approach those around us with curiosity and kindness. Let us engage in relational conflict truthfully, in great love, with the goal of creating peace. Let us confess instances in our relationships, big or small, where we have gotten in the way of peace. Let us soften our hearts and begin to extend the peace of Jesus.
And let us be on the lookout for ways that we can resist the temptation to merely keep peace, and instead, make peace—true peace.
Spend a few minutes reviewing this past week. What new insights did you gain through the scripture? How has your personal experience of God’s peace and presence shifted? How can you begin to extend this peace forward to others in your life?
Romans 12:9-21 KJV
[9] Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
[10] Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
[11] Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
[12] Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
[13] Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
[14] Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
[15] Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
[16] Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

God, thank You for the intricate collection of people You have brought into our lives. As we consider these relationships, we ask for Your help.

Help us to plant seeds of peace through prayers, kindnesses, words, and actions.

And sometimes, the best antidote we have, even in the face of great heartache, is to keep pressing forward for peace in our spheres of influence. We can use the tools of prayer, words, confession, and action to make peace.

#Devotion #HolySpirit #love #peace Forgiveness is an important part of making peace; but sometimes we get stuck when forgiveness feels like losing—losing the upper hand, the power to punish, the right to contempt.
Without forgiveness, however, we keep spinning around and around in the same circles of contempt and resentment. Forgiveness is, after all, the moment when someone who has been wronged agrees to let the future and hope carry more weight than the past and hurt.
It is not pretending that the past hasn’t happened or that wrong or hurt has not occurred, but acknowledging it in full, and then working toward reconciliation.
These moments are so crucial for peace because they make space for something new to grow, for a new reality to exist and for a new kind of relationship to find life.
Is there anyone you need to forgive?
Is there anyone you need to ask to forgive you?
Will you let the hope for peace motivate you more than the desire for revenge?
Thank the Holy Spirit for the peace that has been made available to you today.

As we continue to practice cultivating peace within our own hearts, we begin to feel the invitation to extend peace to those around us. Our families and friend groups, our schools and offices, and even our churches are filled with people just like us — hurting people created for and longing for real peace.
But sometimes, choosing to be peacemakers in our key relationships and our spheres of influence takes patience and creativity. Loving each other, with all of our impossible flaws and imperfections, can be hard to do.
It often means letting go of a self-righteous notion of “justice,” and instead of treating someone better than you think they deserve, asking for forgiveness, or offering it when we least want to do it.
It means showing up again and again, committed to love and truth. As we draw closer to God, we find we are less concerned with passive “peacekeeping” in our relationships, and far more concerned with being courageous peacemakers. This allows us to make space and time for real, lasting peace between ourselves and those within our reach.
This week, you will be meditating on a passage of scripture found in Romans 12. Read this week’s scripture slowly today, and take notice of what stands out to you.

[20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. [21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

NEXT STEPS
Peace is possible. And it begins with us.
Let us live like people who have been saved and who know the end of the story. Let us be aware of those things that steal our peace, and address them. Let us have courage and kindness toward ourselves as we practice peace, again and again. Let us un-clench our fists and begin to receive the peace of Jesus. And let us be on the lookout for ways that we can extend that same peace.
Spend a few minutes reviewing this past week. What new insights did you gain through the scriptures? How has your personal experience of God’s peace and presence shifted? How can you begin to extend this peace to others in your life?
John 1:1-3 KJV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 14:25-28 KJV
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

PRAY
Use the prayer below or write one of your own, asking God to steady you in the peace of his presence.
Dear God, with open hands and an open heart, I ask for Your help. You have created me for peace and called me into the still confidence that comes from walking with You. Help me to pay attention to the symptoms of anxiety and fear that remind me that something is not right, and to meet them with Your peace. Help me to take Your offer for rest in my soul, as I learn from You how to live freely and lightly. Keep my eyes fixed on You, increase my faith, keep me moving faithfully toward peace in every part of my life. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
John 14:1-3 KJV

What would it feel like to wake up in the morning with a sense of peace? Or as you move through your day? And as you go to bed at night? Journal a short description of what comes to mind.

ACT
Slow down. Sometimes, the greatest step we can take toward discovering personal peace is to simply practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is slowing down enough that you are able to pay attention to the present moment — your thoughts, your surroundings, how you feel both physically and mentally. As you practice mindfulness, with God’s help you are able to exercise the “muscle” of your attention on the present moment and receive the moment as a gift from God.
Right now, in this moment, stop, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and simply pay attention to the present moment. As you do, remind yourself that God is with you, no matter what else may be going on in your heart, mind, and life. Notice when you begin to feel more at peace. Know that if you don’t feel it right away, there’s no need to worry: this is called ‘practice’ for a reason. The more you practice being grounded in the present moment, the more beneficial this activity will become.
If it’s helpful, set a timer for five minutes and use this breath prayer to help ground you:
Inhale: Father God (or whatever name for God you choose)
Exhale: I am here.
John 14:1-3 KJV
[1] Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Our world is pulsing with worry. We live in a culture that includes overt fear — fear of war, disease, violence and the unknown — as well as constant underlying anxiety that goes even deeper, leaving us to wonder, “Do I have enough? Am I enough?”
We wrestle with enormous global problems that leave us feeling helpless, while simultaneously grappling with personal struggles often marked by feelings of scarcity. As things feel precarious around us, we tend to hold on tighter. With tight fists and clenched jaws, it grows harder and harder to reach out for the peace that God is gently offering us. How can lasting peace possibly grow here? What ground can peace take in our terrorized world or in our terrified hearts?
But here’s the truth: we are people created for peace. And as we draw closer to God, we can find a path back to that peace. We can see clearly all that is still wrong in our world and our lives, but we can also see that we are not at the end of God’s story. And as we breathe deeply and remember this reality, we are finally ready to begin to practice real peace.
This week, we will be meditating on passages of scripture found in John 14.
On the night that he was arrested, Jesus talked with his disciples about the events that would soon take place. Knowing that his arrest, crucifixion, and his eventual ascension into heaven would likely be chaotic, disruptive, and even traumatic for his disciples, Jesus assured them that their hearts need not be troubled. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you,” he says. “Do not be afraid.” Even in times of upheaval, we can access the steady peace that Jesus left today.
Read this week’s scripture slowly. Make note of what stands out to you as you read. Ask God to open your heart to what he has to say to you throughout this week.
John 14:1-3 KJV

Today’s Devotional:
Are you in the middle of a trial or a test of some kind? Yesterday, we read:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything (James 1:2-4).
In these verses, there’s both good and bad news. Do you want the good news or the bad news first?
James starts with the bad news. He says that trials and suffering are not an “if” but a “when.” If you haven’t yet experienced trials and suffering, just wait—you will! We all experience trials and suffering in our life. But James also shares the good news. He says that God has a purpose for our trials and suffering. He uses them to help us grow and mature in our faith! Now, this process of maturing in our faith is difficult, and if you’re like me, you often don’t know what to do when you’re experiencing trials or suffering. So, in today’s verses, James tells us what to do. He says that if we don’t know how to deal with trials and suffering, we can always ask God for wisdom, and He’ll give it to us!
When I first read this, I was surprised. Wisdom? Typically when I’m experiencing trials and suffering, I ask for deliverance, not wisdom! But think about it. If trials are designed to help us grow and mature in our faith, doesn’t it make more sense to ask God for wisdom and what He wants us to do and learn?
One thing that I’ve learned in life is that when we face trials and suffering, all of us have two choices. Trials and suffering can either make us bitter or better. Let me say that again: Trials and suffering can either make us bitter or better!
If you’re currently going through a trial or a test of some kind, don’t waste the experience you’re going through by denying it, hiding from it, or getting bitter or angry about it. Instead, ask God to give you wisdom and learn from it!
A mature Christian is able to seek God’s wisdom in dealing with trials and suffering and learn and grow from them as a result. As Proverbs 2:6 says: “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Questions:
1. Are you currently in the middle of a trial or a test of some kind?
2. Ask God to give you wisdom. What does He want you to learn or grow as a result of this experience?
Prayer:
Jesus, we thank You that You give us wisdom when we ask for it, and we pray that You would help us to know how we can grow and become more mature in our faith in the midst of whatever trials or suffering we experience today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
James 1:5-8 KJV
[5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. [6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. [7] For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. [8] A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Today’s Devotional:
Have you ever felt like throwing in the towel? My wife and I recently had the opportunity to hike Half Dome in Yosemite National Park—a dream come true. The only problem was, on the way down, I realized I didn’t have enough water. I became so dehydrated that both my legs locked up and I fell over. At this point, I still had eight more miles to go. The whole way back, I was consumed with these thoughts: I can’t go another step, I just want to give up, I just want to quit.
We all have moments in life where we think we can’t go one more step. If I’m being honest, I’ve faced more of those moments in the last couple of years than the rest of my life combined. But I found so much encouragement in the book of James. In this book, James—the half-brother of Jesus—encourages the Church during a time when they are scattered and facing persecution and trials. He gives them instructions on how not to quit when life is hard.
James says that whenever we face trials, we should consider them an opportunity to be joyful. I actually love that James doesn’t say if you face trials, but he says when you face trials. For me, there is comfort in knowing I am not the only one who will face trials. They are a reality for each and every one of us.
How can we possibly consider our trials a joy? Trust that trials produce faith, and faith produces perseverance, and perseverance produces maturity. He is telling us that although our trials may not feel good, God will still use them for our good.
Most of the time, when we face a difficult situation, we pray that God would remove it—when in reality, He wants to use it. James isn’t saying that life will be easy, but rather, he is asking us to consider that what we’re facing might have a purpose—that our obstacle might actually be an opportunity. James is trying to help us understand that some things only grow through trials.
I am, by no means, a gardener. But I do know by browsing the plant section at Lowe’s or Home Depot that each plant needs something different to grow. Some plants need half sunlight, some need full sunlight, some need a lot of watering, and some only a little. James communicates that the only way we grow perseverance is through trials. It’s hard, but it’s also encouraging because we serve a God who can turn our mourning into gladness, our ashes into something beautiful, and our sorrow into joy.
I don’t know what trials you are facing today, but I hope you will remember these truths…
Whatever your trial, you are not alone.
Whatever your trial, you can still be joyful.
Whatever your trial, God will use it for His glory and for our good.
You can go another step.
You don’t have to give up.
You don’t have to quit.

Questions:
1. What situations make you feel like quitting?
2. How is God growing you through your trial?
Prayer:
God, thank You that You use trials to grow and strengthen me. Help me to trust You through every trial. Use every hard situation for Your glory and turn every hardship around for good. Amen.

We Serve a Gracious God
Seeking God’s guidance is our privilege and our right as His children. Scripture tells us that God is not only generous in giving wisdom, but He is also gracious. He doesn’t criticize or scold us when we come to Him in need. This aspect of God’s character is crucial to understand. Too often, we approach God hesitantly, fearing that our requests are too trivial or that we are a bother. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Every time we turn to God for wisdom, we affirm our trust in Him and acknowledge His sovereignty over our lives.
Moreover, God’s promise to give wisdom is not conditional or tentative but a guarantee. “It will be given,” says James. This assurance is a testament to God’s faithfulness. He is to live guided by truth. The promise is an invitation to rely on Him in every circumstance.
However, it comes with a caveat: we must ask in faith without doubting. Doubt, like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind, undermines our ability to receive God’s wisdom. A double-minded approach, wavering between trust in God and reliance on our understanding, can hinder us from fully embracing what God is ready to provide.
This devotional, therefore, is not just about God’s willingness to give wisdom; it’s also about our readiness to receive it in faith. It’s a call to approach God with a heart full of trust, casting aside doubt and embracing His promise.
Our God is a God of generosity, grace, and faithfulness, eager to guide us through every trial and decision. Let us then, with confidence and without wavering, continually seek Him, trusting in His promise to generously provide all that we need to navigate life’s complexities. In doing so, we not only gain guidance for our current trials but grow in our faith and understanding of who God is and how deeply He cares for us.

James 1:1-12 KJV
[1] James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. [2] My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. [9] Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: [10] but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. [11] For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. [12] Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Colossians 2:1-3 KJV
[1] For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; [2] that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; [3] in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Psalm 32:6-11 KJV
[6] For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. [7] Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. [8] I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. [9] Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: Whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. [10] Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: But he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. [11] Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: And shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Abundant Wisdom
Let us look now at the generous and impartial nature of God’s wisdom, highlighted in James 1:5. This verse serves as a cornerstone for understanding how God dispenses wisdom to His children, assuring us of His readiness to guide us through every trial and decision.
James emphasizes that God is the ultimate source of wisdom. This wisdom is not selective or exclusive; it is available to all who have a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Understanding this is crucial for every believer. It dismantles the false notion that God’s wisdom is only for the spiritually elite or those who seem more ‘worthy.’ Instead, it’s a promise that extends to every child of God without distinction.
But this promise of wisdom comes with a profound implication: it places the responsibility on us to actively seek God’s guidance. God offers wisdom generously to all believers; if we lack wisdom it’s not due to God’s unwillingness to provide but rather our failure to ask. We must pursue it actively in prayer and through studying His Word.
God’s giving is marked by generosity and a lack of reproach. He doesn’t give begrudgingly or scold us for our lack of understanding. Instead, He gives freely, abundantly, and lovingly. The nature of God’s generosity is significant. He gives us as much as we need. He is not a God of scarcity but a God of abundant provision.
Jesus’ encouragement to “ask, seek, and knock” is a call to the persistent and faithful pursuit of God’s guidance. It’s an invitation to a continuous, dynamic relationship with God, where seeking His wisdom becomes a regular part of our spiritual walk. This pursuit is not just to resolve immediate problems but for ongoing spiritual growth and understanding.
Are we earnestly seeking God in our daily lives? Do we approach our trials with the confidence that God is ready and willing to guide us? I encourage you to shift your perspective to view trials as more than challenges. They are also opportunities to experience God’s generosity. Remember, in God’s kingdom, wisdom is not a scarce resource; it’s a divine gift available to all who earnestly seek it.
James 1:5 KJV

Proverbs 2:6-7 KJV
[6] For the LORD giveth wisdom: Out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. [7] He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
Matthew 7:7-8 KJV
[7] Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Guided by God
Let us now look at the process of seeking God’s wisdom in trials, emphasizing the importance of a heart aligned with God’s will and the value of the seeking process itself. Every trial is an opportunity to grow closer to God. When we face tests, our primary goal should be to align our desires with God’s will. This alignment is about reaching a place of neutrality where our sole desire is to please God, whether the path leads right or left. This attitude of surrender and willingness to follow God’s direction is foundational.
Prayer and the study of God’s Word are vital in this process. Another key aspect is seeking the counsel of wise, godly people. These individuals should be steeped in Scripture and capable of guiding us according to God’s Word, not just worldly wisdom. Their insights can often provide clarity and perspective that we might miss on our own.
Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our understanding. As we navigate trials, God often directs us by opening and closing doors, guiding our steps in ways that may seem mysterious but are perfectly orchestrated. Whether it’s a closed opportunity or an unexpected opening, providential acts are God’s way of steering us in the direction He desires.
The key to understanding and accepting His direction is relying on Him. We often turn to other sources for guidance, overlooking the most crucial one—God Himself. Remember, God could impart wisdom effortlessly, but He chooses to have us seek it. This is not just about finding answers but deepening our relationship with Him.
In Proverbs 2, the pursuit of wisdom is likened to searching for hidden treasure. The search is part of God’s training for us in our trials. It teaches patience, deepens our faith, and brings us closer to understanding God’s heart. Don’t be discouraged when you feel like you lack immediate answers. The journey towards wisdom is as important as the wisdom itself.
As we continue, let this remind you that trials are not just about enduring or overcoming challenges but about actively seeking God’s guidance. It’s in the seeking that we grow, learn, and are transformed. Embrace this journey, knowing it leads to a deeper, more intimate relationship with God.
James 1:5-7 KJV
[5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. [6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. [7] For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.
Jeremiah 29:13 KJV
[13] And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Seeking Wisdom in Trials
When faced with trials, our natural reaction may be confusion and a sense of inadequacy. James acknowledges this human condition, reassuring us it is normal to feel a shortage of wisdom in such times. He encourages us to see this as an opportunity to seek divine guidance.
The beauty of James’ message lies in its simplicity and profundity: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God.” This isn’t merely a suggestion; it’s a divine command, an imperative from God. It reassures us that our first and most crucial step in our moments of doubt and confusion should be to turn to God for wisdom.
But what exactly is this wisdom? It’s not just intellectual knowledge or a collection of facts. As James points out, true wisdom is the skillful application of knowledge. It’s the ability to take what we know and apply it effectively to our life situations. This wisdom differentiates between merely knowing something and living it out in a way that aligns with God’s will.
God, being the ultimate source of wisdom, generously offers guidance to those who earnestly seek it. He doesn’t just give us wisdom; He gives it generously and without finding fault. This is a profound truth: our God is not a God of scarcity but abundance, especially when imparting wisdom.
God can impart wisdom directly through His Word or indirectly through the counsel of wise believers. In times of trials, it’s essential to immerse ourselves in Scripture and prayer, allowing God to speak directly to our hearts. Simultaneously, seeking counsel from godly individuals can provide clarity and perspective.
As you face trials, remember the promise in James 1:5. When you find yourself at a crossroads, unsure of which path to take, pause and ask God for wisdom. Trust in His promise to provide generously. In doing so, you align yourself with His will, finding not just answers but also peace and assurance in your decisions.
Let this be your guiding principle: in every trial and every uncertainty, turn first to God. Ask for His wisdom. Trust in His promise to guide you through. This is not just a path to solving problems; it’s a journey towards spiritual maturity and deeper intimacy with God.
James 1:5 KJV
[5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Proverbs 3:13 KJV
[13] Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, And the man that getteth understanding.
James 3:17 KJV
[17] But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

A Joyful Journey Through Trials
In life’s journey, we often face trials and uncertainties. They may leave us questioning, “What should I do now?” The answer, as revealed in James 1:2–12, is more profound and comforting than we might initially realize.
James, a servant of God, begins by encouraging us to consider trials as occasions for joy. This perspective shift isn’t about enjoying suffering but recognizing that such moments refine our faith and build endurance. He likens trials to unexpected encounters, like stumbling upon a thief. Trials are unpredictable yet inevitable. Our response? Joy – not because of the trial itself, but for the strength and maturity it will cultivate within us. Joy is a deliberate choice, a settled decision to find goodness in challenges.
Verse 4 tells us about the advantage nestled within trials. They test our faith, nurturing endurance. This endurance isn’t just passive waiting; it’s active perseverance, leading us to spiritual maturity and completeness. The Lord uses trials to equip us, rounding out our character and preparing us for the journey ahead.
Yet, in a trial, confusion often surfaces. Questions arise: “How should I handle this situation?” “Do I stay in this challenging job, or do I go?” “How do I reach out to my child? How do I minister to those affected by my trial?” In these moments of uncertainty, when we lack wisdom, James offers a powerful directive: Ask God.
When unsure, when the path seems clouded, the first step is to seek divine wisdom. God, in His generosity, offers wisdom without reproach. This wisdom isn’t just for our benefit; it extends to those around us impacted by our trials. Our response to challenges doesn’t just shape us; it influences those we encounter.
James 1, therefore, isn’t just for enduring trials but for thriving in them. It’s about transforming our perspective, seeking divine wisdom, and understanding the deeper purpose behind our challenges. It’s realizing that in every trial, there’s an opportunity for growth, deepening our faith and drawing closer to God.
As you embark on this devotional series, remember trials aren’t just obstacles; they’re opportunities. When faced with uncertainty, don’t seek answers; seek God’s wisdom. Remember, there’s a hidden blessing in every challenge, a chance to become more than you were, more like Him. Let trials motivate you to find joy and to grow in faith and character.
