Darryl Ridout 1966-2001

Should you, walker, explore the footpaths near Chartwell, Kent, you might come across a shrine dedicated to Darryl Ridout. I don’t know who Darryl was or what happened but on my many walks in the area I became familiar with the shrine, and observed changes to it. I always had time to stop and spare a thought.

Perhaps the place of the shrine was special to Darryl. How very sad.

Jedburgh

62 miles from front door to the border, 72 miles to Hundalee B&B. Little bit of easy walking, reading, lager, whiskey and curry. A68 is a fun road to drive – blind summits, dead deer and grouse, twists and turns. Next time I really should finally bag a munro. Tennents is not a bad lager because it is not that sweet at all.

Beer in Durham in Early May

Usually I walk to Durham and then either walk back or take the bus. Summer now gone, best weather was in May and very early June. Why would anyone live in London when we have it so nice here oop north?

River Wear Walk

A walk while my car was being serviced in Pity Me. The highlight of the walk was the closed Belmont railway viaduct.

Knitsley to Waskerley Loop Walk

Fifteen miles starting close to the Knitsley farm shop, then along the Waskerley Way railway path to the Hownsgill viaduct and Smiddy Shaw reservoir. Newly paved path did my ankles and feet in.

January 2021 Morning Walk

It had snowed overnight so I decided to check out some interesting footpaths. Took the OS Explorer map 307 and camera with me and hoped it would not be too muddy.

Monday Walk Along Deerness Valley

13-14 mile walk to Durham and back, footpaths and the railway path were quite busy but the town very quiet. Despite running and jogging regularly I notice that I have no walking endurance whatsoever – muscles are aching. My walking boots are also too large so I need to buy a new pair. There was a small forest fire along the route, some people were calling the fire service so I didn’t hang around.
