Showing your mind who’s boss

This post by my friend Sara Foley is simply brilliant…

sara's avatarThe Practical Mystic

Why is it so important to be be in charge of our minds rather than the other way around?

Note: This is like asking why isn’t it okay to let your 10 year old son drive around in your car.

You can either work your mind or it can work you. If you work it, it can be an amazing tool, sharp and incisive. If it works you, it will be like you have a circus full of monkeys in your head all day and all night.

This idea that that you can be in charge of your mind rather than the other way around is kind of revolutionary to some people. They get angsty, much in the same way that if you tell them that drinking milk is not going to make their bones stronger (ha! see what I did there?). You see, our culture has a long history…

Road Tripping

thedailydish's avatarThe Daily Dish

I’m in the process of planning a road trip down to Atlanta in November.  I haven’t seen my sister and her family in almost two years, and as my folks live just 20 minutes from them, it’ll give me the chance to spend some serious quality time with them all.  To say I’m excited would be putting it mildly.

To break up the solo drive, I’ve decided on 8-10 stops each way, visiting places I’ve always wanted to go, but never have.  And to pay for this venture, I’m using the remainder of the money I earned from my last cookbook, as well as selling the remaining copies I received.  For just $15, you can help me and help yourself!  Yes, you can buy it cheaper on Amazon.  But will you get a signed cookbook, lovingly mailed by the author herself?  HECK NO!

I don’t make any royalties from my cookbooks.  None.  I was…

Memories of Muskoka – Vacation 2013

My husband and I spent a very relaxing ten days in beautiful Lake Muskoka, north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Thank you to our dearest friends, P&M, for letting us stay at your beautiful cottage, your endless generosity, and for suggesting the perfect environment to create such a wonderfully relaxing vacation.  xoxo

Great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget…

mukoka1

Port Carling, Ontario, the closest town, was a charming settlement with a weekly farmer’s market, pretty shops, great breakfast served at Ella’s Restaurant, and nearby hiking trails.  The town of Bracebridge was just a little further and also fun to visit.

muskoka2

We had no access to a telephone or internet, thanks to our limited cell phone plan that does not have international coverage included.  Without connectivity, I had to overcome my electronic withdrawal jitters and take the time to really relax!

muskoka3

I did the following while on vacation:

  • spent precious time with longtime friends
  • read three books
  • wrote in a journal
  • ate lots of ice cream
  • experimented with recipes from Fine Cooking
  • went canoeing
  • attended a Highland dance competition with my girlfriend to watch her daughters perform (such focus! such determination! such high jumps! so many different outfits!;)
  • went boating with our friends across all three big lakes (Muskoka, Rosseau, and Joseph)
  • took tons of pictures
  • watched my husband kayak at dawn
  • hung out on the dock in a Muskoka chair
  • went antiquing
  • did almost everything on the list as suggested by M. as the must “see and do” places in Muskoka 😉
  • browsed the fancy shops
  • took time for a salon pedicure
  • listened to the loons call at night
  • slept in every day
  • and generally had a thoroughly perfect vacation!!

muskoka4

I had never been to the Muskoka region before, and I wanted to share some of my favorite photos from our time there.  Hope you enjoy!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Masterpiece

Here is my entry for the Weekly Photo Challenge depicting a natural Masterpiece, The Lily, as found in it’s wilderness setting of northern New York.  I stumbled across this beauty while my husband and I were canoeing, and her radiant bloom begged for a picture.  She was not one bit camera shy! 😉

Some tips for the seeker of Truth

Be in your seeing Being. Profound words…

Lou's avatarZen Flash

Some tips for the seeker of Truth: Take a few breaths in That which is breathless.
You are not data-based.
You are emptiness.

Get out of your own way.
Know and be your instant-ness.
Fall inside your own ocean of Being.
Burn in the fire of your own yes to the Real.
True seeing — your sharpest sword.

Don’t be in what you are seeing;
be in your seeing Being.

Photo of the Week: Burj Khalifa ~ Dubai, United Arab Emirates

A poignant quote and beautiful shot from my friend Tahira…check out her other amazing Photos of the Week…

Tahira's avatartahira's shenanigans

From now on, each Friday (or there about), I will share a photo with you from my little adventures.

163 Floors…

Burj Khalifa ~ Dubai

The tallest man-made structure in the world, at 2,722′ (830 m)

“Just Hold On Loosely
But don’t let go
If you cling too tight babe
You’re gonna lose control…”

As I gazed up at this man-made wonder in the sky yesterday the 38 Special song started playing in my head.

Perhaps it’s because lately so many around me are clinging desperately to the illusion of control and are wound up so tightly the fragility of their taut stings is palpable.

The more one clings, the less hold they have…

To My Dad – A Daughter’s Love Letter

Rufina's avatarBeing Rufina

In honor of upcoming Father’s Day, and as a tribute to all fathers, a re-post of the letter I wrote to my Dad for his 70th Birthday…

Dear Dad,

How can you be 70 already?… You?…Age?!

Never, in my eyes…

Image
Dad in his Early 20’s

You will always be young and dapper to me.

You were born the eldest of two sons, to a simple grounds keeper and a telephone operator, who did not have a lot by way of material things, but taught you instead to value the things that really matter, such as the importance of having respect and spending time with your elders.

My grandparents, Walter and Olive, were simply, in your words “the best parents in the world, from the last great generation”.

I will never tire of your stories of them, and the lessons they taught you still live on through you and through your memories.  “Honor your father and…

And When Three Bloggers Meet…

A portrait of three bloggers

A portrait of three bloggers

And When Three Bloggers Meet…:)

The Connection Will Be Sweet…

On That You Can Rely!!…

The Fundamental Things Apply…

As Time Goes By. xo

Three bloggers, from three different states, north, south and mid-west came together for a magical evening of love and laughter…

*****

When Zully, Spiritual World Traveler and I found out that Tahira from Tahira’s Shenanigans was coming home to the US from Saudi Arabia for a couple of weeks in April, we just knew we had to find a way to meet.

How did we make this evening happen?  How do you make the leap from casual on-line acquaintances who comment on each other’s blogs from around the world, to making a dinner reservation for three?

First we became blogging friends.  Then we became Facebook friends.  One Facebook post led to another.  I saw that Tahira planned to come home, which just happens to be the city that I travel to for work monthly.  Happy coincidence!  I private messaged her to ask if she would like to meet for dinner.  She said, “Yes!”.

Next came the scheming part…  Having just completed a collaborative post with Zully as Guest bloggers for Tahira, I couldn’t imagine doing dinner without Zully being there too!

I asked Zully if she could arrange her schedule to also fly in to join us.  Together we decided to surprise Tahira, who originally thought it would be just me.  I picked up Zully at the airport, we arrived a bit early to the lovely Italian restaurant where we had made the reservation, and….Ta-Dahhh!  Tahira arrived.  The surprise played out perfectly!!!

Wish I had a picture of her face at that moment!! 😉

We had a lovely evening, with plenty to talk about (too much to say, too little time), many similarities and most importantly, we LIKED each other in person too!

A bit nerve-wracking leading up to the date, wondering if we would just sit around and have nothing to say…However, I was fairly certain that wouldn’t happen!

Wine toast

I know our mutual friendship will deepen and continue to grow.  Tahira has returned back to The Kingdom and her Shenanigans.  Zully has returned to being a World Traveler who is Spiritual and A Traveler of the Spiritual World.  And I have returned to just Being Rufina…;)

I hope that other bloggers are as fortunate as we have been in making your paths cross in person.  Like minds, kindred spirits, whatever you want to call them, it sure is wonderful when you find each other.
