Catching Up...

Catching up.... We have had so much going on in the last month. Cameron turned 10 and celebrated both with the family and also with a birthday party. He made a movie with his friends (Griffin Sanders, Luke Wright, Kevin Bunn, Levi LeBaron and Jaren Heaton - as well as Elise and Corban Beutler) that I will "publish" one of these days. They made a Pink Panther movie of sorts and I followed them around filming their adventure movie. It was fun for the boys (and Elise).***We mad Cameron a swirl cake and gave him some new clothes, a model airplane (Dauntless WWII) and a BIG bag of pistachio nuts!

Corban's birthday was the day before Thanksgiving. It was also the day all of our company arrived to celebrate Thanksgiving with us. Corban was so happy to be 5 years old. We sang "Happy Birthday" and gave him a present with multiple vehicles in it to play with. When I asked him what kind of a cake he wanted me to make for him he said, "Chocolate, because I am a brown boy!" He is our little brownie with this dark hair and brown eyes - but really? We made him a Hot Fudge Cake (from Chocolate Never Faileth) and it was heavenly. So good in fact, that Mike had us make it for his birthday four days later.

For Thanksgiving, all of my siblings, their families, Doug and my mom came.  It was GREAT. We had 31 people in all. I so enjoyed being able to visit with my family and I loved that our kids played so well together. Cari and Trevon came home for the holiday. We had yummy food that included a 23 lb. turkey that Mike cooked to perfection. Friday we were able to attend a temple session together (parents, siblings and spouses). On Saturday morning (about 6 a.m.), I hugged Trevon good-bye as he headed back to school. Aaron, Dene' and I then headed to the temple again, where we did two sessions of sealings using family names. When we left the temple, I received a phone call from Trevon telling me he had fallen asleep on his way home, resulting in a roll-over. He wasn't hurt, but his truck sure was. We believe it is a miracle that he is alive. An eyewitness named Clark called to let us know that our son was protected. He said he didn't know what he would find when he got to Trevon, the rollover was so bad. Yet, Trevon had only a cut on his thumb. He enjoyed meeting Trevon and commented on the fine young man he could tell he was, just from the short time they spent together. Looking at pictures of the truck, you can see a space of safety all around where Trevon had sat in the car. Every window was broken out and all his things ejected in the accident. We KNOW he was protected from harm and that he has work to do on this earth still. We are so thankful that he is still with us and thankful for Clark and those who helped him in the moments after his accident. Trevon is thankful too and promises to NEVER drive sleepy again.

Cameron and Elise sang at the Festival of Trees in a choir concert on December 1st. Elise dressed up as a butterfly (see her in the video below) and Cameron wore a dragonfly mask. They sang songs having to do with a "buggy" Christmas. Cameron is standing behind Elise and to the left.

I loved watching them and it took me back about ten years to when Cari, Trevon and Sadie sang in Music Makers. Only this time, I feel like I not only see the past in these little ones, but have a glance of what lies in the future as well (looking at where their siblings are now in their lives). Life moves quickly. I can see that now.

Cameron earned his Bear rank and SEVEN arrow points this past month and is now in the Webelos Den. He really enjoys Cub Scouts and I'm glad for all the things it helps him learn.

We really enjoyed visiting Cari this past Wednesday. She played her flute in the SUU Wind Symphony Holiday Concert. After the concert we took her to dinner (Pizza Hut) and gave her a gift of love. She has one more week of school before the semester is over. Sunday night she will be singing in a Christmas Devotional with the LDS Institute Choir. I hope to attend.

We had a Ward Christmas Party tonight.  The dinner served included roast beef, baked potato, corn, red and green jello, green salad, rolls, and cake. The primary children sang songs as the Christmas Nativity was narrated. Corban was dressed as a camel, Elise was an angel and Cameron a shepherd. After the program Santa stopped by and the kids sat on his lap and answered his question, "What do you want for Christmas?" Santa was so good to repeat loudly what every child said. After the party, we drove around and looked at some Christmas lights in our neighborhood. It is a most wonderful time of year. I love my Savior Jesus Christ and this special time of year that we honor him with beautiful music and such. He is the greatest gift in all the world and I'm so thankful to know of His gifts - this world, the gospel, repentance, family, and much much more!

 

I hope to add some more pictures of the events I "mentioned" above. For now, this will fill you in on what the Beutler Family has been doing.

Autumn Piano Recital

Sadie and Kristi played the piano at their Autumn Recital on November 12th. Sadie played Solfeggietto (Carl P.E. Bach) and Kristi played Fascination (Filipop Marchetti).

 

We are THANKFUL for their MUSIC and all that it adds to our home.

Soccer

Cameron has enjoyed being part of Southern Utah REAL Soccer. He plays defender on his team. His team came in second place overall this year. The coaches have done such a great job teaching them. It has been GREAT to watch their progress.

Halloween

Corban is in a little preschool group that the mom's take turns teaching. I was the lucky one who was able to have a Halloween Party with the kids. We played games, learned a song, made a "witch hat" treat, and pretended to trick-or-treat as well as read books and do other learning and crafts. It is amazing what you can squeeze into two hours! We have a GREAT group of preschoolers.

 I dressed up too. We had a witch, a dragon, a pirate, a kitty, a Dorothy, and a pajama partier.

On Halloween Corban helped me prepare a game that we took to Cameron's school party. He helped me roll up strips of paper with different things associated with Halloween on them, and put them into some balloons that I blew up. What a great helper he was! At the party, the kids would pop a balloon and then act out what was on the paper, trying to get their classmates to guess what it was.

 Cameron dressed like a wearwolf. He won a pumpkin candy holder at one of the games in his classroom.

 Elise dressed as a cowgirl. YeeeeeHawwww! I was glad for her choice!

 The elementary school had a costume parade at the end of the school day. Corban and I liked seeing the variety of dress up, and the excitement of all of the kids.

 

 

 

 On Halloween Night the kids did some trick-or-treating. It was a perfect evening (not very cold).

We're trying to keep up with all of the falling leaves. It is beautiful with the yellows. I find myself thinking the lights have been left on in the bedrooms, only to realize it is the yellow of the fall leaves shining through the windows. I like it!

Concert Time!

On October 29th, 2012 Kristi and Sadie were part of a Music Halloween Benefit Concert at the high school. Kristi played in her middle school's Advanced Orchestra, playing Aboriginal Rituals (Elliot Del Borgo), Warrior Legacy (Soon Hee Newbold), and The Idylls of Pegasus (Richard Meyer). She dressed as a vampire, with her hair puffy big!

Sadie went as a pink crayon.

 She played with the high school Orchestra and also with the Symphony Orchestra. They played Night on Bald Mountain (Moussorgshky), A Pirate's Legend (Soon Hee Newbold), Danse Bacchanale (Saint-Saens), and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Andrew Lloyd Webber).

On the very next night, we drove to Cedar City to attend a concert the SUU Wind Symphony was giving. Cari  played the flute and it was good to spend some time with her. We enjoyed being in the Heritage Center Theater where the concert was held. The music was beautifully performed. The program included seven different musical selections: In Flight; Two Bagatelles; Ode for Trumpet; Olympic Fanfare and Theme; The Seal Lullaby; Wild Nights!; and The Circus Bee.

After the concert we went to Dairy Queen!

Neighborhood Party

On Monday I noticed that I had two "blank" spots on my calendar, with Friday and Saturday being totally open....I decided it was the perfect time to have a neighborhood party! I knew if I waited any longer, it would be too cold out and my chance would be gone. I decided on a simple fall menu of soups, salads, rolls, and dessert. I made some fliers and passed them out to my neighbors, making some assignments as I did so. That was that! The kids had Fall Break on Thursday and Friday, so there was no school - which made it nice as far as clean up and party prep goes. Mike did yard work and the kids helped clear out the garden while I washed some windows and window wells. We all enjoyed WORKING together outside and I thought it was the PERFECT THING to do during a "no school" day!

On Friday I made rolls and some soup and the girls helped make some cookies for the party. They were a big help!

The party began at 6pm. We had quite the gathering! Ten of twelve households were present. Over 35 people came. It was GREAT!

There was plenty to eat, thanks to everyone's contributions. The Beef Noodle Potato, Vegetable, Taco, and Potato Soups were all delicious! We had a yummy broccoli salad and a tossed green salad too. There was more than we could eat, and everyone seemed to enjoy what was on the table, especially the variety of desserts.

Everyone (young and old) enjoyed spending time with each other and visiting. After eating the kids ran and played.

 Mike built a fire and we gathered around it to visit and stay warm. Some roasted marshmallows.

 I loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves and was reminded of what a great group of neighbors we have. We are so blessed! The party lasted about 3 hours and with everyone's help the cleanup was easy. I was so glad we filled our Friday this way. Have you had a neighborhood gathering lately? Maybe it's about time!

Older and Wiser

Another year has gone by, and last week we celebrated my birthday! The kids made me Chocolate Oatmeal Cake from a recipe found in the book "Chocolate Never Faileth" (by Annette Lyon) that my good friend, Tonya Beutler, gave me for my birthday.

 

 

I enjoyed the cards I received, presents given and the love I felt. Mike surprised me with a nice wool coat! He was also very kind to make me his least favorite meal, Spaghetti!

During the week we had a Ward BBQ and Cameron had his face painted. I just had to post his picture.

We had a craft day for Relief Society on Wednesday and I made a necklace out of Baling Wire! I'm wearing it in some of the photos in this post. I thought it was pretty cool and may even try to make a few more - SOMETIME!
Tonya invited me to go to Time Out for Women on Friday and Saturday in Richfield, Utah.

We had such a great time with four other women friends. On Friday afternoon we traveled to Richfield where we ate at Wingers and then enjoyed an evening listening to speakers Virginia Pearce, Sheri Dew, and Jenny Oaks Baker (who is a classical violinist that entertained us with many beautiful songs).

 

Sadie is a big fan of Jenny Oaks Baker so I made sure that I met her at the end of the evening. Here's a sample of what she played:

  

 

We stayed at the Hampton Inn with many others who were there for TOFW. One group of women handed us a bag full of ice creams, bowls and spoons and told us to "take some and then pass it on!." It was probably about 11pm when we passed the ice cream on. We went to bed two hours after that.
After a great breakfast on Saturday, we returned to TOFW to hear from more inspiring authors and musicians.

The vocal group Mercy River spoke and sang throughout the day between the other presenters. Every speaker was inspiring and encouraging in their message centering around this year's TOFW Theme: Seek the Good. Saturday the speakers included Deanne Flynn, Emily Freeman, Mariama Kallon, Wendy Ulrich and S. Michael Wilcox. It would be hard to pick a favorite (they were all great), but I must say Wendy Ulrich's message on The Sacred Power of Apology (seeking forgiveness) struck a chord and made a lasting impression on me. She pointed out that we judge ourselves by our intentions, but others judge us by our behavior (and vice versa), we often judging others by their behavior (and not their intentions). JUST FANTASTIC!

In the middle of the day we took a break for lunch. The restaurants in town were very crowded with women who were there for the TOFW event. We wanted to try a Mexican Food restaurant, Pepper Bellys, and ended up going there for dinner before heading back home.

Our waiter, Dustin, joined us for a picture. I think we left him with a big tip too.

It was such a rejuvenating trip and I enjoyed the time I spent with these terrific and FUN women. I hope we do it again another year in the near future!

Northern Utah SUHC Trip

Mike and I went on a Northern Utah Recording and Performance Tour with the Southern Utah Heritage Choir this past Saturday and Sunday. We left early on Saturday and on the way, were able to stop in Cedar City to visit with Cari and share some cinnamon rolls. We were glad she woke up early for us and loved starting our trip out seeing her. We then headed up to Provo where we met the choir at KBYU Studios in the new BYU Broadcasting Building. There, we took part in a recording session for the program "Highway 89" to be aired on BYU Radio on October 15th @ 8pm MST, as well as on other radio stations later in October and in November. Next, we were able to visit with Trevon.

 He gave us a tour of his apartment and introduced us to a roommate, Josh. Trev seems to be doing great and we enjoyed being able to see and visit with him too. Next, we headed up to Salt Lake City where I changed and then headed to the Conference Center auditorium for the General Relief Society Meeting. Mike hung around Temple Square and the City Creek Center while I was at the meeting. It was WONDERFUL to be at the conference and see our latter-day prophet, his counselors and other wonderful church leaders. Even more wonderful were the words they spoke and the spirit that was felt. The music was heavenly and the conference center, pretty grand to behold, filled with so many there to hear the word of the Lord.
 Mike met me afterwards and we went to Kneaders for a bite to eat, walking through the new City Creek outdoor mall.

 Sunday morning we arose early and walked over to the Tabernacle at Temple Square. Here, we met our choir friends and attended the Tabernacle Broadcast of Music and The Spoken Word. We sat right behind the tech booth and were able to not only see the live performance, but see the images that were being aired with the music on the television screens in the booth as well.

 We learned about the choir and orchestra and thoroughly enjoyed listening to them practice and then perform.

 It was especially fun for us to watch the cameramen filming with various cameras and equipment throughout the broadcast.

We returned to our hotel to gather our things and then headed back to Provo. Here, we attended a church meeting and then visited Mike's brother, Eric and his family. Eric made some yummy salsa and tacos and Mike helped his niece and nephews make pie crust for Eric's Birthday Pear Pie. It was so nice to spend time with them. We changed into our choir attire before saying goodbye and then headed to Highland. Here, we met at the Stake Center where we had a rehearsal with the SUHC and then performed for a fireside there. After the fireside we made our journey home. It was a short but sweet trip and I have to say, even sweeter to be home with our young ones who missed us!

Happy Birthday Sadie!

 Sadie's Birthday was a busy Thursday. She got an "egg"stra special breakfast - toast, eggs and hash browns to start the day.

 After school her friend Emily took her to Dairy Queen for a "sweet" treat before Sadie had to run to St. George for her violin lesson.  While gone, Emily put some surprises in her bedroom for her to find later.
Sadie didn't have any special dinner requests so I made a green salad to go with Stuffed Pasta Shells and French Bread. I made her a Hummingbird cake, using her Grandma Beutler's recipe. Cameron and Elise put some of their money together to buy her a gift...

 ...a cuddly guy named Tundra!

 Sadie enjoyed the cards and gifts she received. Some of her gifts included new strings for her violin, clothes, make-up, and body wash. What a beautiful sixteen year old!

 It is fun celebrating those you love and we love Sadie very much!

Elise's Baptism

Elise's baptism day was a very special day. Her baptism took place on Saturday, September 8th at 9:30a.m. at the Hurricane Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cari and Trevon came home for this special event, Trevon bringing her a special birthday gift: a Beta fish she named Blueberry.

On the morning of Elise's baptism, Trevon looked out of the basement bedroom window and a king snake was there in the window well. He caught it and put it in a bucket when we left for the baptism. When we came back home, the bucket was empty and the snake was no where to be found!

 

Elise was both excited and nervous about being baptized. She told me she thought she wasn't ready and I asked her when she thought she would feel ready. She said, "In a year." She wanted to be baptized but having to be immersed in the water scared her. I reminded her that she had arrived at the age of accountability and was old enough to know right from wrong and that meant that it was the right time for her to be baptized. She agreed and was very courageous as she stepped into the waters of baptism.

 

 Another 8 year old girl, Hadley Clayton, was baptized too. They shared the planning of the program. Elise asked her Grandma Ferrin to give a talk on baptism and Papa Beutler said the opening prayer. Cari, Sadie and Kristi helped with the music: Kristi and Sadie played a violin duet together that was beautiful.

 

Elise had lots of support at her baptism. I gave her special doll to Hadley's mom to use for her talk on the Holy Ghost. She wanted to liken the Spirit to a comforter, and this doll that her Great Grandma Miller crocheted, is a great comfort to Elise. It helped her to understand the comfort the Holy Ghost brings.

Our neighbor, Judge Carr came to show his support, along with Grandma and Grandpa Ferrin, Dad (Mike) and Mom (Shelly), Grandma and Papa Beutler, Kristi, Sadie, Cari, Trevon, Cameron, (Elise) and Corban.
WE LOVE ELISE VERY MUCH and are so pleased with her choice to follow Jesus Christ.

I asked her to write down her thoughts about her baptism. These are her words: "On the day of my baptism I was nervous. I thought I wasn't ready to be baptized. My grandmother did the talk and my grandfather did the prayer. There's one thing I didn't like. My mother took my doll and let someone use it for a talk. When I went in the water I thought it was warm. It felt weird when I went under water and the water went over my face. After that, I felt really clean and my stomach felt warm. I think that was the most special day of my life. I was glad that I was baptized." (Recorded two days later on Monday, September 10, 2012)
