The Practical (and Fun) Guide to Assistive Technology in Public Schools Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars (15)

Assistive technology (AT) is a serious topic-providing students with special needs tools and strategies to aid in their learning-but reading about it doesn't have to be boring! In The Practical (and Fun) Guide to Assistive Technology in Public Schools, authors Christopher R. Bugaj and Sally Norton-Darr throw in a few pirates, monsters, and monkeys to keep you engaged but don't sacrifice the tips, strategies, and insight that will help improve your school or district AT program. From setting up a stellar team to consultations and evaluations, and from implementation to assessing success, this guide presents detailed advice and ideas to provide AT services that effectively and efficiently help students. The nuts and bolts of each area are presented in a practical way (with amusing metaphors thrown in for good measure) so that you can directly apply what's in the book and see tangible results.

Educators new to AT will find the step-by-step layout helpful in building an AT team and procedures, while seasoned AT professionals will find value in the fresh ideas on reducing paperwork, expanding an AT team, and strategies for considering AT for all students. The analogies, examples, and sometimes even rhymes in this enjoyable book will leave you excited to implement new ideas and improve your AT program, benefiting students, parents, teachers, schools, IEP teams, and of course, AT professionals.

"An engaging, easy-to-read guide featuring great advice whether you are a novice to AT or have been using it for years." —The Texthelp Times

The Practical (and Fun) Guide to Assistive Technology in Public Schools is refreshing look at the process of assistive technology and how about to make an assistive technology team. I have read many books, research papers and white papers on what an AT Team should be and it is nice to have a reference book that I can share with others and pull up if I have a question.

The book breaks things down into understandable language leaving the AT jargon speak for others. It takes dry topics and brings humor to them. The book guides you through the different aspects and hurdles that are faced everyday in the AT "world". The book was written so you don't have to move from chapter to chapter they want you to skip around to the information you need and want now.

I would recommend this book for the newbie into AT and older timer that is just looking for a gem to share with others. What I like best about this book are that the authors not "theory people" they are hands on, they are in the classrooms working with students on a regular basis. The authors are also accessible to answer question or to help others on the AT journey.

This book has informed so much of my work in both public and private k-12 assistive technology program development. It is a must for anyone in the field who is new to practicing in a school setting (as an AT specialist) and a MUST MUST for administration wishing to implement an AT program in their school district. Chris Bugaj writes from decades of experience, trial and error with a humorous lens that can't help but feel like fun summer reading. Don't be fooled though - this is the meat and potatoes of program development right here. Other folks have written manuals, how-to guides or websites and they are also very helpful, but this book is my go-to guide.

This was assigned to me as a textbook for one of my classes, but reads nothing like the other textbooks I have to plow my way through (and that's a good thing). The writing is fun and personable, showing that the authors actually care enough about their readers learning these principles to try and make them interesting to read and easy to remember.

This is a wonderfully basic book on AT needs for students with disabilities. It is an easy read and easy to understand, even for those with little or no technology backgtound. It really herlps to lay down some basic AT protocols for your school district. Love it, and not even done with it yet.
