Design Wall Wednesday #7

I took this picture over the weekend and I have made progress getting all of the cups and saucers stitched in the last few days. Wool appliqué is so fun – no edges to turn under. My goal is to have all of the basic appliqué finished by the weekend. There is a lot of embroidery and embellishing to do on these blocks AND I signed up for Sue Spargo’s 2026 block of the month – Kith and Kin. I will need to make some time and space for that hand work.

While we wait for more progress on the Cuppa blocks, here is a different cuppa quilt I made quite some time ago inspired by the work of Tonya Ricucci’s book Word Play Quilts. I had so much fun making these cups and text.

Might be time for a cuppa and some knitting to round out the day.

Thread Stories

Over the years I have dabbled with embroidery. The Sue Spargo block of the month included some spools of Eleganza and I have picked up Pearle cottons and embroidery floss here and there. I usually have a project in mind but I never seem to get very far.

I read an article this week about the difference between people who succeed and those who give up. Not to oversimplify but it seem that those who succeed in a pursuit use the phrase, I am a . . .instead of I want to . . . I remember this from my running days. Instead of saying I want to run a 5k, I began to say, I am a runner. This also shifted my knitting life. I used to say, I want to knit something but now I say I am a knitter. (I began calling myself a quilter about 36 years ago when one of my quilts got a ribbon in the guild show).

Kym and Debbie have consistently shared embroidery projects. I have asked them questions and they have graciously shared their wisdom. I have watched Rebecca Ringquist’s classes and have purchased a few of her Dropcloth embroideries. And recently, I have found quite a few people on Substack who are sharing embroidery.

So, here I am. One sampler in process, sorting my threads, taking inventory of my needles and getting comfortable with saying, I am an embroiderer.

And also – this. Yes, March 13 has brought the first snow of the year to our doors. I guess it is a good day to thread some needles.
