OK, so I know it has been over a year since I have written anything on this blog. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing at all; I started a private blog that functions somewhat like a diary for me, and have been using that since my therapist suggested I journal and write down my feelings. I personally don’t find journalism to be much of a resolution to my mental and emotional plight, but in the interest of putting my best foot forward, I heeded her advice and have been keeping track of my life and mental state on that blog. However, this is the blog where I share my thoughts with an audience and I have been slacking in that respect for quite some time.
And so, here we are to play the catch up game and let you know what has been going on. To be perfectly honest, this is a time in this country where serious journalism is very much needed but I can’t actually consider myself such a writer. I am definitely an avid lover of all things literature, but tend to lean towards the science fiction genre. However, the current global climate calls for a much more serious class of writing and I am going to do my best to capture at least some of the pertinent facts in that manner. I apologize in advance if this seems like a whirlwind of information, but the actuality is that all current events are being relayed to the public in a fairly whirlwind type of manner – too much information in such a short amount of time to disseminate the information.
In any event, I have written about some of these current events in my private journal blog but now I think it’s time to share my thoughts and perspectives about these matters with my readers. So, lets start at the top and working our way to the current day. At the onset of this year, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) notified our president, Donald Trump, of a potential global crisis which involved a pandemic that began its spread in Asia. According to our ignorant President, there was no true threat to the well being of the American citizens and therefore early in the year, the news was reporting normally as it had done for decades prior. The news indicated that our largest health concern was still the Flu, which has been the case for quite some time. The President, along with numerous national media outlets, had managed to lull the American population into a false sense of security.
Meanwhile, more information was unfolding about this new pandemic that was spreading across the globe like wildfire during the first quarter of 2020. Allegedly, the pandemic was a product of some questionable cuisine that is served in certain regions of China. The general belief was that the virus, which was coined the Corona Virus or COVID-19 for short, was the result of eating raw bat meat and with an extreme lack of regulatory food practices in that region of China, I suppose there is very little the public can do to ascertain the truth about the origins of this virus. Even more disturbing is the convenient timing of the pandemic, with the US Presidential election occurring in Nov 2020. There was a period of blatant finger pointing, during which time the President accused the WHO of being negligent to the health and safety practices abroad while the WHO made the US population aware of the advanced notice our President was given. Right about that time, the death toll was increasing at an alarming rate and countless lives were lost unnecessarily.
In other words, Trump would have the blame fall upon the WHO for not catching this prior to a full-blown pandemic being unleashed upon the entire world population meanwhile the WHO is stating that with the advanced notice that was given to our President, the pandemic never had to spread as quickly as it did but our President was not swift to action and also downplayed the seriousness of the Corona Virus to the public, asserting all the while that the Flu virus was taking more lives than COVID-19 and we need not worry about this new novelty virus. I hate to admit that humanity is so petty, but I cannot deny the truth. Despite the back and forth between our President and the World Health Organization, plenty of conspiracy theories exist about the true origin of the virus. Many believe that the timing being so close to election season was a means of controlling the vote through fear. The premise here is that if the US population is so scared of the pandemic that we panic and vote to keep Trump in office so that we maintain some sort of status quo (I will discuss this more later.) There are other theories that indicate this virus was bio-chemically engineered in an effort on China’s part to retaliate against the United States. I can’t say I truly place any stock in the latter notion, considering how many Chinese-Americans make up our population and the fairly stable nature of our foreign relations. Granted, the US has found itself in an absurd amount of national debt to China, but this shouldn’t be grounds for biochemical warfare.
By the middle of March, it had become apparent that the source of the pandemic was far less critical of a matter than the death toll which accompanied the virus. It was becoming counter productive to keep bickering about who was at fault because all lives were affected at this point. And the best possible realization was reached; that the entire global community would make an effort to create a vaccine for this Corona Virus and share all of its research findings with one another. This too was a challenging development in such a capitalistic world. Pharmaceutical companies are all in competition with one another to be the first to produce a viable vaccine and with that being said, one can only imagine just how freely the flow of information has been regarding the treatment of this pandemic. At the very least, information regarding the symptoms of COVID-19 and the potential side effects of the current unsuccessful treatment methods. But I might be getting a bit ahead of myself as talk about the creation of a vaccine didn’t become more prevalent until mid to late summer.
The first quarter of 2020 ended in a state of public panic, at which point most of the country was shutdown for an indefinite period of time. The schools were closed to in an attempt to safeguard the children and the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year was completed 100% virtually. If becoming an unpaid school teacher wasn’t enough of a headache, the world was spiraling even more out of control by the minute. Non-essential businesses were closed and a confused workforce had to make some new realizations about our fields of work or industries. Only essential businesses were allowed to continue operating, and even then they were restricted to do so within limited hours of operations. All businesses needed to be closed by the 8PM curfew and this was making managing the household nearly impossible. All of my after work errands were unlikely given how early everything closed. I was used to Walmart closing at 10PM and Stop and Shop closing at 12 midnight, so it goes without saying that our home routine was going through some serious changes. On a similar note, there were new senior citizen hours put into place so that seniors would have a safe time period to get their shopping done.
The information about the pandemic was pouring forth on every media outlet you could imagine, whether it be the radio or the news. And with all of the public safety changes that were going on, the world and how we live in it also was changing at the same time. For instance, most work was occurring over the internet (remote/virtually) and this made my field of career a big one all of sudden. Over the last few years that I was struggling to find work in my field but now the IT jobs were pouring in left and right but I was secure and stable right here at Yale New Haven Health Systems and I could see no reason to shift things around in life any further than they already have been. The courts and other government buildings were closed to the public and even nail salons and barbershops were closed for business until further notice. There was a contingency plan put into place that would ensure the survival of capitalism and it involved the reopening of all businesses in numerous phases based on the industry and importance of the business. So many small companies simply couldn’t survive the shutdown and therefore they never returned upon the phases of reopening.
Meanwhile, symptoms of the virus appeared to be mutating quickly despite the novelty of the pandemic. What initially was slated at an upper respiratory condition that was proving to be fatal to many elderly and patients with preexisting conditions, was transforming right before our very eyes. The respiratory symptoms were considered the lethal aspects of catching COVID-19 but then suddenly the virus seemed to be mutating and patients were experiencing weird digestive symptoms that were unrelated to the respiratory system all together. There was a period of time when the young were considered less susceptible to catching the virus until suddenly a 7 year old little boy in another state proved that theory to be inaccurate as well. Afterwards, a great deal of young children were hospitalized and some of them died so young it hurts my heart. The thought of my son being included in that bunch gave me extreme anxiety and I felt guilty for bringing my on into this world for it to be seized by plague and confusion. There was another misconception that once you had caught the Corona virus, that you could not catch it again. But I am unsure where that assumption came from considering that one can catch the Flu several times throughout the Flu season. I would imagine that COVID-19 has similar enough symptoms to the Flu virus that we would base most of our assumptions on what we already know about the Flu virus. However, there were findings that indicated a patient who previously was diagnosed with COVID-19 had waited the 2 week quarantine period and retested as negative for the virus, yet roughly a month later that patient once again tested positive for Corona Virus. And nobody knew if this meant that re-exposure to the virus was possible or if the virus was merely mutating so quickly that a patient could catch a completely different strain of the virus – there was and still is too much that we still do not know about this pandemic.
And even after all of this writing, I have still barely touched the surface of what is really going on in this country nor the rest of the world, for that matter. Well, I have already mentioned how the Presidential Elections are coming pretty soon and that probably accounts for most of the nonsense that is taking place in the media and some of the publicity stunts being attempted by our current president. (That is to say that his publicity stunts are far from a new development and thus the pandemic was certainly not the catalyst nor the provocation for our president to say the things he does on the news. In fact, I am sure there are plenty of written accounts of the ways in which our President addresses the American citizens. There is an undertone of vulgarity smothered in blatant ignorance and the things that he says are typically racially insensitive or down right offensive. He has even gone so far as the insult Michelle Obama, our nation’s first African American First Lady – from as petty as her physical appearance to as obscene as her gender and sexual identity. He also conducts questionable business relations with potentially hostile countries behind the American government’s back and refused to submit his income tax returns to the American government as the president’s before him have done in the past.
It was as if his reputation weren’t bad enough before the pandemic struck, but now he had to go out of his way to create some bigger news than the fact that hundreds of thousands of lives were lost and it could have been prevented had he been honest and forthcoming with the American public. Of course, how convenient that the first pandemic to hit this planet since the Spanish Flu roughly a century ago, occurs while the worst president in US history is in office. That seriously has to speak volumes about this current leadership in this country. Of course, by the time the COVID-19 shutdown occurred and travel restrictions were put into place to prevent and reduce the spread of the virus, so many countless lives were lost and this man showed no genuine remorse. Of course he made media appearances and gave brief statements, they were typically ignorant and insensitive. He also made it a point NOT to where a mask during a time when the population is looking to you are a leader to set an example for us. He essentially planted the seed of mistrust in a large enough portion of the population which wreaked havoc on the well being of local communities. People were protesting in the streets against the wearing of masks and how unconstitutional it was to force this upon the citizens. In the warmer climates, the people complained of the excessive heat and inability to breath while wearing the mask for prolonged periods of time. The reality is, these were all excuses that cost hundreds of thousands of lives collectively, and this could have all been prevented by our Commander in Chief.
Meanwhile, these weren’t the only cases of civil arrest occurring in the nation. All over the country, people were protesting in front of their local police departments and government buildings, calling for something to be done about the police brutality and racism in our communities. This is nothing new either, but I don’t say that to undermine the importance of what has been happening – it’s moreso to establish a timeline in reference to the pandemic and I can assure you that this type of police behavior is not something that just began during the onset of the pandemic. Really, this has been going on ever since slavery was abolished in this country and the legal system evolved into what it is today. Police have been singling out African-American members of the community and demonizing our youth for the same misdemeanors that non-minority offenders were guilty of. And let alone the criminal justice side of the coin; many African-American offenders (and even some innocent bystanders) never see the inside of a courtroom and never receive a chance at justice because they are killed on the scene by the police. These are the civil servants that are meant to protect us and make our communities safer, yet they themselves have become one of the biggest threats to our communities.
There is a great deal of excessive force, brutality, racism, and corruption that exists in the underbelly of our criminal justice system and much of that has been brought to light recently. I am not sure exactly why now but I think it is because the world as a whole is in a state of flux – things are rapidly changing right now especially with the introduction of this new deadly Corona Virus. With that being said, maybe advocates of social change decided to jump on the bandwagon and get the ball moving on their causes as well. But the what is more important than the why’s and when for the moment. Suffice to say that, within the last few years thesocial climate in this country has been transforming slowly but surely. It began with the statute of limitations against sexual offenders being completely removed. With that being said, a victim no longer had to be concerned of how much time has elapsed since the offense had made against them – they could report it at any time no matter how many years had gone by. A flood of various chargges came out against famous people who’s transgressions were out of radar for some time.
One tragic example of this was Bill Cosby – a childhood favorite of many. Allegations were made against him, then several other victims came forward further cooberating those allegations, then charges were filed and pressed and Cosby was ultimately convicted. R Kelly aka Robert Kelly – the Pied Piper, king of R&B – was also finally brought up on charges for similar sexual offenses. A whole entire documentary was created about R Kelly which included all of the messy past allegations and rehashed the whole scandal. He too, was ultimately convicted of those sexual offenses despite the amount of time that has transpired. Things began to get more serious as a Supreme Court Justice was also brought up on charges of sexual offense and several witnesses came forward against him as well. I can’t remember exactly how that case turned out nor can I pronounce, let alone spell that man’s name. But I have made my point in that laws were being amended, modified, and modernized to some degree. As for our President, he became the object of various insult and scrutiny. Reporters still had to question the various unsavory moments of these past 4 years while he has served in office – let’s just say it has been a media circus. Even a book was written which gives a full account of an interview with President Trump where he admits to various misgivings and lies that he told to the American people.
The media had become a circus and it’s like the rest of the nation wanted to keep up with that media circus so the chaos continued. The police were continuing to behave reckless towards the public, from firing rubber bullets at children during protests to the outright murder of an African American man in public in front of several witnesses. The Body Cams worn by the 4 officers involved clearly show use of excessive force to the point where they killed a non-threatening man who was already cuffed and on the ground by suffocating him and kneeling on his neck for almost 10 minutes straight. The man cried for help, cried for air, and even cried for his mother who had previously passed at one point. At the end of the day, yet another black man dead. There was another incident where an innocent black woman was murdered in the middle of the night right in her own apartment by the police. They were looking for an ex-boyfriend who was using her address some time in the past to receive mail and packages. The victim, Breanna Taylor, was only 27 and was a medical student with a bright future. She had broken up and cut all ties with the suspect the police were looking for. Her current boyfriend was scared when the cops broke down the door without announcing themselves and this caused the police to return fire, killing Breanna Taylor. Even though this happened earlier in the year, outraged Americans still protest through the streets demanding justice for her and demanding that charges be pressed against those police and they be expelled from the force.
When I read the accounts of George Floyd and Breanna Taylor, I can’t help but feel disgusted and dismayed at where this country is headed. I feel fear for simply being an African American woman in a racially charged hostile nation at the moment. It seems unreal that someone should lose their life for such matters. And especially when I think of Breanna Taylor, I realize that living in the south and going through what I experienced with my son’s father could have easily turned sour. I could have become a casualty of police brutality while my son’s Caucasian father walked free as a bird, capable of terrorizing the next unknowing woman. I think of how differently life could have played out for me if I hadn’t gotten away from that place exactly when I did. I’m grateful the whole ordeal is over but that oesn’t mean the lingering feelings of disgust and mistrust have gone away. I’m not sure they ever will. And it is crazy to think that I have to raise a mixed-race son in this ignorant world that we live in. The pandemic alone provides me with all the parental stress I can take at the moment, to be honest. My son had a fever of 101 and complained of a scratchy throat and I was gripped with fear and anxiety the entire weekend, constantly checking his temperature and asking him how he was feeling. I really am just completely over this stupid COVID crap and wish it was all over already. UGH!!!
Anyway, I’m not inclined to go any further on this informative quest because it is truly depressing to face the reality that has become life as we know it. I won’t continue to dwell on the current events and happenings and I am sure there are plenty of legit media sources from which to obtain this information from in a more accurate manner. I am honestly just giving my account of what is happening and how it makes me feel. I will continue to live and try my best to remain strong and I will hopefully survive this madness. I am also closely monitoring my son and any symptoms he may have, which is the normal thing for a mother to do anyway so it is business as usual over here. Work has been busier than ever and I finally have completed that stupid Defensive Driver training that was forced upon me by the legal department. Technically, everyone in Fleet has to complete the training but for a minute I thought I was being single out because it was taking so long for the training to even be assigned to me. I am quickly learning that slow as sin in the Yale way and the Corona Virus only further complicated matters, making adapting to my new position even more drawn out.
Needless to say, the new school year of 2020-2021 has begun and in-person classroom instruction is slowly being reintroduced to the world but in a hybrid model. Some student will be learning virtually while others will be in the classroom. It appears that depending on the school district you live in, that choice is either up to the parent or up to the particular school that the student is enrolled in. Anthony is going to school full time because I work full time and have already been struggling to keep up with the remote learning since it begun back in March. I simply cannot afford the time necessary to maintain his education online and my mother simply does not have the understanding of technology. Finding someone else to come into the home and do it for me has also been nearly impossible and so back to school it was for him. The first day of school was Sept 8, 2020 and now that we are weeks into it, I honestly cannot say that I feel any more reassured than when he started. I know that my options are limited and I don’t want my son to be illiterate or for his education to suffer on account of my being overwhelmed. Another part of me feels guilty, as if I am putting my son in harms way by even sending him to school in the first place.
If he were a bit older, maybe home schooling would be a viable options but at the tender age of 6 years old the boy can barely read or write and he would need plenty of adult guidance and support to receive his primary education at home. I am praying desperately that the Magnet schools are better able to keep the pandemic under control than some of the normal public schools have been. Statistically speaking , when looking at all the schools in CT as a whole, there is a very low infection rate and the majority of infections have been occurring at the higher levels due to lack of social distancing, parties, dating, etc. The colleges and universities have had COVID-19 take the largest toll on their staff and student body. With that being said, I have at least one reason to be grateful that my son is too young to be fully in control of his social interactions and whereabouts. I can find some peace and solace knowing that there is not too much wiggle room for things to get out of control at the lower grade levels, but I am still vigilant in keeping an eye on how things progress. And ever since Anthony having those weird symptoms over the weekend, I will watching even more attentively. I will hopefully be in touch before another entire year elapses – LOL.
