Update

Standard

Well the world just got less safe and more crazy over night and I’m trying not to think too much about what this means for the world. Instead just focusing on what I can do and trying to stay on top of my to do list.

Got my February book finished. It was book called “Damned Whores and God’s Police” by Anne Summers. It’s hard to describe what it is about in a sentence or paragraph but my best attempt is that its a part history and part social science to form a statement about the role of women in Australian Society and an argument for social change. It was written in 1976, which made it interesting to see both what has changed and what has not. Determined though that my next hard book is going to be a little lighter in content.

My second finish is another quilt for charity. Not 100% finished, just needs the binding sewn down and will do that while watching tv tonight. This one was based on a pattern in a Homespun magazine. They had a white background and pale blue star but I decided it would look great as a more colourful quilt.

March is going to be super busy with something on most weekends so thinking about how I can get a quilt done and a book read and think I am going to have a go at a quilt as you go quilt to see if it saves me some time.

Mixed results and feelings

Standard

I know I am making progress on things. My next serious book is almost read, weeds are getting pulled in the garden, a quilt is being hand-quilted and a hat being knitted. My new slow approach is working. I’m spending less time on games on my tablet and more time doing. I’m working on things I’ve been putting off for years. I even got to the gym twice so far this week. I also feel calmer and more at peace with myself. But… it is leaving me feeling a little unproductive when it comes to blogging. I have loads less show and tell compared to last year when I was making dozens of quilts.

Today you will get some show and tell though. I did do another painting. I enjoyed the process even though I don’t think the results were as good as the first effort. I’m not sure I selected the right paper. It was a piece of card rather than painting paper and I’m not sure paint was sitting on it in quite the same way. But it is all experimenting and learning.

New things

Standard

One of my goals for this year was to get out of the house more and try new things. So yesterday I went to a folk art class. Our local folk art society runs them every month.

Here’s my efforts. I decided I would paint on some card for the first little while until I get a hang of things. Also, I only have a small house and not a lot of space to display objects but I can put some paper up on my wall.

Chinese textiles

Standard

This is the last post from my China trip and it is a bit of a mix of different pieces of textiles I found while out and about in different museums and other places. Most of the pictures were taken through glass display cases and while I tried to take a photo of the label to remember what I was seeing in some cases I forgot.

Anyway here we go….

Wasn’t sure if these were solid gold or gold embroidery, but they are still pretty stunning boots so I am including them.

Rather macabre, but this was a coffin cover.

Some historic outfits.

Even in real life it was hard to see the quilting on this coat. It doesn’t appear heavily quilted, but it does look warm.

Some stunning embroidery on silk.

Trying to take a photo of the whole shirt was a bit of a disaster but you can see from the close up of the sleeve how lovely it was, and would have been.

These children’s shoes are not just for cuteness but part of a festival.

And I will leave you with this. An old sewing machine in an historic village. Looks like it has had electricity added to an old hand crank.

Progress on goals

Standard

I’ve been making some progress on my goals. I’ve read my first serious book for the year. It was a bit of a struggle. It was called the Ageless Soul by Thomas Moore. It was supposed to be an examination of aging well but it was a bit all over the place and very male centered. I do genuinely feel that women have some unique issues as we age. For example he had a whole chapter about the loss of identity when transitioning from work to retirement without examining whether a woman who has been a home maker ever gets to retire. And don’t get me started about menopause lol.

The second area of progress has been on my charity quilts. I had the top for this one finished at the end of last year so was able to pull it out and quilt. I’ve also been working on going slow by hand quilting in the evenings.

Image

Other goals I am struggling a bit more. I think I am finally eating a bit healthier. Exercise and gardening have also been lacking due to the heat. Going to be 40C here today (that’s 104F to you non metric folks) so I did a bit of gardening at 5.30 and am now back inside with the air-conditioner blasting.

Chinese Silk Embroidery

Standard

I promised you some posts about textiles I came across while on my trip to China. The first is silk embroidery. I was somewhere else entirely when I came across an exhibition and gallery where some of the pieces included a technique I had never seen before – double-sided embroidery.

The work was incredibly detailed and very beautiful. Here are some examples.

And this is an example of the double sided embroidery. These are pictures of both sides. I’m seriously impressed given the back of my embroidery is questionable at best. I have no idea how they do it but apparently there are videos out there.

Goal setting for the year

Standard

I am a bit behind in my goal setting for the year. Not in the goals themselves but in the planning for how I will achieve them. So I had a good sit down this weekend and worked through what I wanted to do and decided that the plan was more about making a decision to spend a certain amount of time each week on certain things in my life.

Interestingly, not a lot of my goals this year relate to quilting. That’s ok, I am still going to make quilts and some of my goals will support my quilting in other ways.

  1. Prioritise my health. This means time spent on exercise, healthy eating, good sleep and a calm mind. So no skipping the gym to sew (that one hurts). Taking time to cook a proper dinner rather than having a microwave meal because its faster. When I have taken care of myself then I can spend time on other things.
  2. Read 12 serious books. I have piles of non-fiction books on my to read pile, but like many people I have gotten out of the habit of reading long things. I skim headlines, skip long articles and scroll. Peri-menopause doesn’t help either and I want my brain back. So I picked 12 books from my pile and will spend time each week reading (and taking notes to help make the information stick in my brain).
  3. Get my garden under control. Lets just say, it is a weed infested, hot mess. My plan is to weed and mulch (to stop the weeds growing back so fast) and then start to think about how to re-design it so its a place I wanted to spend time in rather than somewhere I am avoiding.
  4. Explore other aspects of my creativity besides quilting – so spend time writing and drawing. I also plan to join a folk art society where they have regular painting classes. This isn’t as mad as it seems. I often have ideas for pictorial quilts but struggle to translate them into reality because I can’t draw the idea I have in my head. I was quite good at drawing back in high school but mostly stopped after school. Now is the time to make it a regular practice.
  5. Get out of the house and meet more people. This one is going to be hard as I have become very anti-social over the years but can tie into the other goals i.e. go to a fitness class rather than just workout by myself at the gym, join a few clubs, go to classes, see if I can find time to volunteer for something.
  6. Make 12 charity quilts – this one is maybe self-evident. I have enjoyed making quilts for charity this year and would like to make some more, just maybe not be as crazy about it as last year. I think one a month is a good pace, as they are usually small quilts and machine quilted.
  7. Go slower and take time to enjoy the journey and the process of making things. I am hand quilting a quilt top I finished last year and really loving the slowness of it. I’d forgotten how peaceful and relaxing hand stitching can be. So I am going to go slow on the things I am making for me including hand quilting, making the Dresden plate quilt that takes time and patience and work on some embroidery.

I am already started on my first book and I have a charity quilt ready for pinning and quilting (in between pulling weeds of course).

How are your goals for the year shaping up?

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and travels

Standard

Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and new year and if not, hopefully the year ahead promises some good things (or at least some moments of peace).

I’ve been a bit radio silent because I have been travelling and it has been a bit of a weird trip that I still have very mixed feelings about.

All my family were scattering to the 4 corners or the earth over Christmas so I decided to try and find something to do rather than sit at home and feel sorry for myself. I came across an eight day tour of China and decided to give it a go despite never having thought about going to China, hating tours (I’m a bit anti-social) and having a few concerns about China’s human rights record and geopolitical stability. I left Australia on the 22nd December and only got back yesterday. I refrained from posting while overseas as I didn’t want the stress and wasn’t sure what internet and cloud based services I would have access to.

So here are my thoughts before I wow you with the photos:

  • Even though I hate tours, I don’t think I could have got round China without one, or a local guide of some kind. Not because of the language barrier or anything like that but for the help with navigating the security checks. For example, knowing that you can’t take any kind of printed material into Tiananmen Square or scissors on the bullet train. And there were a lot of security checks.
  • The people are very friendly and usually happy to help despite most people speaking no English. Prepare to be stared at though, and we did on one occasion have people asking to take photos with us.
  • All the tour guides will stick to the communist party propaganda talking points (Tibet, Taiwan, the percentage population of ethnic minorities etc.) I didn’t challenge them on it while over there. I figure they probably don’t have a choice if they want to work in the industry.
  • Pandas are exactly as cute as you think they are going to be.
  • The history and cultural heritage are immense and I did learn a lot (not sure I remember all the dynasties though) and it has inspired me to add Chinese history to my list of things to investigate further.
  • Some places like the summer palace and the forbidden city, while visually spectacular just didn’t feel right. I can’t put my finger on it except to say it was like they were dead places, even when crowded with people. That could just be me being hormonal though.
  • Be prepared for crowds. We were there in the off season and it still felt crowded to me. But then as an Australian, I’m just not used to that many people.
  • I still hate tours and 8 to 10 days is just enough time that you have to move beyond polite chit chat to decent conversation and start annoying one and other (again that might just be me).

Anyway, pictures. These are just the general ones. I will do a few more posts on the textiles and other craft related things I stumbled across in my travels.

Clean up time

Standard

Every now and then I feel the urge to tidy up my sewing space. This morning I literally dragged everything out of my cupboard and off my shelves and this is now the mess that is my sewing room.

Image

Now, over the next couple of days I have to put it all back together again, decide what can stay and what can go and make sure that the stuff I want to work on next year is front and accessible and the for a rainy day stuff is safely tucked away. I’ve already found somethings I had forgotten I had.

Left over fabric wrangling

Standard

A while a go I think I posted about this quilt or quilts. I used a jelly roll to make two very similar baby quilts.

Image

I had fabric left over. Not enough to make a quilt exactly like this but enough to do something. So I paired it with a solid and…

Looks really wrinkly for some reason but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
