CONVERSION STORY
Washington DC South Mission
Missionary: Elder Thomas Scoble
Date: March 26, 2011
The story that I would like to share happened at the very end of my mission. It was my last transfer and I was just called to be a trainer. It was my first time training and I was hoping not to mess it up. So Elder Aker and I went to the Zone Conference and when we were waiting for everyone else to show up, Elder Karen came up to me with a package. He would not let me look at the front. He was telling me that I need to just open it with out looking. I was all excited that it was going to be something good from home. So I pull out the stuff in inside and it is a referral. I tell you what I was so bummed. I was wanting something good from home. The next day after Zone Conference we went to see if could contact the Tanya Bibb. The referral was from a Gladys Knight Concert. Tanya had just been to one in CA. So we went and knocked on the door and Lexy (Tanya’s 13 year old daughter) came to the door. We asked if we could talk to Tanya. She said that she would go get her. Tanya comes down and asked if we could come in and talk. Well she didn’t have a male home (she is a single parent). Then she asked if we could come and sit in her garage. We said that would be fine. We then have a great first lesson with her and Lexy. She was telling us that she had never been to our church before and that she had a friend in CA that was trying to get her to go. We asked her if she would come to church next Sunday. She said that she would be there. We told her that we would call her to reminder her. She came to church and loved it. Our next appt. couldn’t be until next Friday. Tanya works in CA all week long. So that means that she flies back and forth every week. She leaves every Sunday and comes home on every Friday morning. She only has 3 day to spend with her daughter Lexy. We then go to our next lesson with her and it is great. In the lesson she starts to get very emotional. I ask if everything is Ok. “It’s that tone of voice that you are using.” she told me. I then told her that it was not me that it was the spirit. The spirit was very strong in the room. We then asked her to be baptized on March 26, 2011. With tears in her eyes she said that she would be baptized. The Joy that filled my heart I can’t describe. We asked Tanya if she would come to a baptism happening the next day in the Massaponax. It was Gabrielle. Elder Ditty and I had found her and she was getting baptized. She did and she was making friends with everyone there. She was acting like a member already. She was passing out things and was even helping to clean up. Then after the baptism she was telling us that they (the people speaking) were using that tone of voice too. I again told her it was the spirit. She again got very emotional. The next lessons that we had with her were great. She told us that we were her 3rd set of missionaries. She had some things that were holding her back before. She told us that it was about blacks in our church. She didn’t think that our church let black people in. That all went away after she had gone to that Gladys Knight Concert and heard her bare her testimony about the church. She thought if she is Ok with this church then why can’t I. She was so ready to have the Gospel in her life. It just took one testimony of another to help her over come. She is now a baptized member of the church and is doing great. The baptism was so strong. There was a lot of people that come to support Tanya. I feel Lexy was feeling the spirit too. Lexy is not baptized yet. She will be some day. I know that this church is true and that God knows us all. God loves us all and knows us by name. I love my mission and all that I have learned. The things that I have experienced can never be taken away or forgotten. I love my heavenly Father and my Savior Jesus Christ. I love my family and all that they taught me. I love this church and know that the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the true church of God on the earth today. I love my mission and would never trade it for the world. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
