Life Update

Last I wrote, I "couldn't wait" to update you with a regular monthly update.  That would have been the 12 months update.

Well, apparently, I could wait because here we are and the Maya bear is now 14 1/2 months old.

Oh, hello, life!  Nice of you to get all crazy on us.

We have been going NON-STOP since July 10th.  I took my dance team to camp (me + 18 high school girls + 1 college campus + 4 days = exhausting!), went to our county fair a couple times, Maya went to her first baseball game with her friend EllieOnna, work has been so, so hectic and crazy including my first jury trial (not guilty, baby!), I turned 30, and we went on a family vacation.  I also have 3 more trials scheduled before the end of the year.  Phew!

So, at 12 months, Maya was 21 lbs., 11.5 oz and 29.5 inches tall.   And now, she's bigger.  Ok, bye!

Just kidding.

Dance camp was awesome.  It was the longest I had ever been away from Maya, but we were so busy that I didn't have time to get too sad and sappy.  We kept in touch with Facetime and Dan and Maya came to visit me for a little while on Day 3.  My dance team did so, so well.  They performed amazingly on a routine that we worked so hard on all summer, as well as a routine they learned at camp.  It was Gold across the board, baby!  Not only did they perform well, but they behaved better than I could have ever expected.  They are truly a good group of very sweet girls that I am blessed to coach.  But, let me tell you something.  I am definitely 30 and cannot keep up with those teeny-boppers anymore!  I was so exhausted when I got home on Sunday afternoon that I fell asleep on the floor of Maya's play room for a solid 2 hours.

The following weekend, Dan, Maya and I went to an Indians game with our friends Andrew, Tylan and their daughter EllieOnna.  It was the girls' first baseball game and we had front row seats right behind home plate.  We took Maya up early to show her our old stomping grounds and enjoyed a picnic on the canal.  We made it to the 6th inning of the game and bedtime called.  When Maya gets tired, she is pretty much just done with and over everything.  Kind of like her momma! :)

The county fair was fun.  Maya was mesmerized by all the animals, lights, sounds, and people.  (The people who come out of the woodwork to go to the county fair are quite mesmerizing!)  We met our small group out there one night and had dinner together and rode the carousel.  It was soooo hot and sticky that night, so we didn't stick around long.  We also put Maya in the baby show, but she didn't place.  It may or may not have had something to do with the fact that she could not have cared less about anything except her Cheerios.  Those old ladies trying to get her to smile, laugh, coo, or otherwise acknowledge their presence?  Psshh.  Girl had Cheerios and that's ALL that mattered.  Her boyfriend, Blaine, got first place, though!

I got the joy (sarcasm!) of experiencing my first jury trial on my 30th birthday.  I spent the last day in my 20s and the first day in my thirties in my county's superior courtroom.  I thought I might get to enjoy the evening of my birthday, but nope!  The jury deliberated until 7:30 pm and I didn't get home until about 8:30 pm.  The jury returned a not guilty verdict, though, so that was a great present.  When I came home, I found that my mom had delivered a delicious chocolate on chocolate on chocolate cake and Dan opened a bottle of sparkling wine from Huber's Winery, so I did get to celebrate a little bit.

The following weekend, Dan, Maya and I headed to Brookville Lake for the weekend.  We enjoyed being lazy and relaxing in the sun with family and friends.  It was a great little getaway.

The next morning, we got up and headed back home to re-pack and hit the road to St. Simons Island, Georgia for a family vacation.  My family has been going there for years and it just so happened that we all (my mom, stepdad, brothers, brother's girlfriend, Dan, Maya and I) managed to get off work to be able to take a vacation together.  Maya did about as good as can be expected on the 13 hour car ride.  She did get a little fussy, but only when she was tired.

The week was great - so relaxing, which is exactly what I needed.  No one was really on a schedule and we all just kind of came and went. We celebrated my birthday, had dinner together as a family every night, the guys went golfing, the girls relaxed in the sun, Maya loved the beach.  It was just really, really great.  I will say, though, that going to the beach with a baby is a chore.  There is so much stuff to bring, sand gets everywhere, sunscreen needs to be reapplied so often, which when mixed with sand and a sleepy baby who loves to rub her eyes when she's tired is really not a good combo.  She wasn't digging the sand or ocean on the first day, but by day 4, she was running full speed ahead toward the waves and giggling with delight.  She also loved to chase the "ducks" (sea gulls).  I would say her first beach experience was a success.

She's pretty much eating anything we put in front of her and we've started giving her watered down fruit juice on occasion.  The girl loves milk.  She says:  mama and mommy, dada and daddy, up, duck, dog and doggy, ball, uh oh, okay, pretty, bubble, cracker, and a few other things, but only when she wants to.  She does a whole lot of jibber jabbering and it really sounds like she knows what she's talking about, but I can't make anything of it.  She also sometimes folds her hands to pray at meals and it is just the most heart-warming thing.

Summer was very fun, but I am looking forward to falling leaves, an apple orchard visit or two, pumpkin-flavored goodies, sweaters and boots, and the holidays.

ONE!

Our baby girl is one year old TODAY!  I took the day off work today to celebrate with her and it has been a wonderful day!  I am a little sad that she is already one, but it has definitely been a fun year, filled with a lot of firsts, laughter and amazement.

"I'm ONE today!"
We had her party this past weekend and our theme was from the Disney Pixar movie "UP!"  The inspiration came from Maya's 1st word, which was "up".  I thought we'd have a low-key celebration, but, in true Stephanie style, my simple ideas snowballed thanks to input from friends, family and Pinterest.

Our friend Andrew took pictures that day so Dan and I could just enjoy the day and not feel like I was looking at it through the eye of a camera.  So, the pictures I'm sharing here are from the smart phones of friends and family.  I will have many more (and better!) ones to share later.

For the food, we served Kevin's caprese stack UPs, Dug's pUPpy chow, Carl's fruit cUPs, Russel's turkey roll UPs, and UPcakes.  We also served Ellie's grape soda, which we kept cold with frozen water balloons.  A couple weeks prior to the party, I spray painted some wine bottles and those served as vases for carnations, as well as balloon weights.  We had balloons everywhere, of course. :)  Dan and I worked hard to create a photo booth area where everyone could dress up like characters from the movie UP!  (Special thanks to my mom for making Russell's Wilderness Explorer sash.)  I'm so glad people got into the spirit of it because the pictures turned out GREAT.  My brother, Alex, went above and beyond and came to the party dressed like Carl Fredrickson - the old man from the movie.

We also had a "guest book" for Maya's birthday party attendees to make their own balloon (their thumbprint) and sign it.  I think it will be a great keepsake. :)

I didn't get an "after" shot, but it was full!
Maya did awesome with her 1st birthday cake.  My mom made it and that was very special!  It was also decorated with the house and balloons from UP!  The flavor was funfetti (my favorite!).  Maya was pretty dainty about it, at first just eating the icing with one hand.  Then I showed her about the good stuff inside (the actual cake) and she dug in a little more.  She primarily used her left hand (yep, I think she's going to take after her daddy on that one), but got her right hand nice and messy at the end.  Upon hearing "soooo big" she proceeded to put her hands up in the air and on top of her head.  She ended up with it all over her belly and in her hair and ears toward the end with a little egging on from her audience.

Maya got so many great, useful, thoughtful gifts.  We are just so thankful and blessed with all the family and friends who have poured into this girl in the past year.  It's overwhelming at times, but I really wouldn't have it any other way.

11 month update

Less than a month until my baby turns 1.  Oh my...

WALKING!
Image
SO squirmy!!!
Image

She has been busy, busy, busy and so have Dan and I.  It seems like we are constantly on the go with little to no downtime.  And when we do have downtime, it's really not "downtime" because Maya doesn't hold still for more than 2 seconds at a time these days, unless she's sleeping, of course.

The newest development is that we have a walker.  She's definitely takings steps in the double digits and getting from here to there by putting one foot in front of the other.  It's awesome and hard to believe at the same time.  I look back at pictures of my teeny tiny Maya and remember how helpless she used to be.  Now she's so independent and developing her little personality.  The video below was at our hotel in French Lick (more about that below!), and this was the most steps she had taken at that time.  That was a little over a week ago and she has taken so many more already!

Maya is also climbing stairs.  She apparently thinks it's really fun, although we're not as thrilled with her interest in the stairs.  She's made it all the way to the top several times now.  She's not so interested in learning how to get down though.

She's been a big mama's girl lately.  She always has been, it seems, but even more so now.  She's clingy and sometimes cries if I walk away or put her down.  I don't really mind, but I do wish she would go to Dan as easily as she comes to me.  From what I understand that will change around the time she turns 2.  So, Dan will get her during her terrible twos. :)

I have always enjoyed updating her food list, but these days, she pretty much eats what we eat.  We've stayed away from seafood, peanut butter, honey, fruit with small seeds (strawberries, raspberries, etc.) and most citrus.  Other than that, we just take what we eat and break it into tiny pieces for the Maya bear.  She's still a really great eater!  She currently has 7 teeth - 4 on the top and 3 on the bottom.  We are looking forward to the transition to whole milk.  I hope it goes well!

Another highlight this month is that we took a family trip to French Lick, IN for a conference that I went to for work.  We stayed an extra day after the conference was over and had a blast.  It is such a family friendly place - indoor and outdoor swimming pools, bowling alley, several food and beverage options, a kids place with games, puzzles, coloring books, a dress up area that Dan took Maya to (SO cute!!), a place to rent a surrey to go for a little ride, carriage rides, and the entire deck of the place is lined with rocking chairs, which was amazingly relaxing.  We are looking forward to a trip back sometime.  Dan and Maya also went to Denny's every morning for breakfast.  I got picture updates as I was sitting in my classes, which made me pretty envious. :)  She also did very well sleeping in her pack 'n play with us in the same room.  No problems at all, really, maybe except that baby in tow = early bedtime for mom and dad.  We pretty much just had to chill in the room past 8 pm, which was kinda boring, but since there is a bar and restaurants in the hotel, Dan just took a short elevator ride to get us some drinks and food.  I was okay with eating, drinking and watching TV.  It was an opportunity to have a little of that rare downtime that I talked about earlier.

We rented a surrey and took a little ride to West Baden.  She fell asleep on my shoulder on the way back. :)

On the way home, we stopped by Huber's winery for some family time, wine tasting, flatbread pizza and bubble blowing. :)

I celebrated my first Mother's Day. :)  That was fun!  We went here and there to hang out with all the moms in our life and eat good food.  Doesn't get much better.

Image

We also got to visit with our friends the McKees!  It is always fun to see them and we look forward to our time with their awesome family so much.  We attempted to go out to eat with our family of 3, their family of 5, plus 3 other people to catch up, but I think we were all so busy with the kiddos that we didn't get much catching up done.  It was still fun to just be with them.

Last, but not least, Darla dog turned 4 years old. :)

I feel like so much more has happened in the past month, but it's all such a blur because we have been so busy.  In less than one month, we will be celebrating my BABY girl's birthday.  It doesn't seem possible...
