1. MAKAN PELBAGAI JENIS MAKANAN&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
i) Tidak terdapat satu jenis makanan yang dapat membekalkan kesemua&lt;br /&gt;
jenis zat makanan yang anda perlukan.&lt;br /&gt;
Semua makanan dapat memberikan beberapa jenis zat makanan dan&lt;br /&gt;
menyumbang kepada rasa, bau, warna, tekstur dan kenikmatan kepada&lt;br /&gt;
sesuatu sajian. Setiap jenis makanan mempunyai gabungan karbohidrat,&lt;br /&gt;
lemak, vitamin dan mineral yang berbeza. Terdapat sesetengah makanan&lt;br /&gt;
yang mempunyai zat makanan tertentu yang lebih berbanding dengan&lt;br /&gt;
yang lain. Serat makanan hanya boleh diperolehi daripada tanam-tanaman.&lt;br /&gt;
Makan pelbagai jenis makanan dapat menjamin badan kita mendapat zat&lt;br /&gt;
makanan yang diperlukan. Makanlah sedikit daripada setiap jenis makanan&lt;br /&gt;
tetapi tidak terlalu banyak daripada hanya satu jenis makanan sahaja. Tidak&lt;br /&gt;
ada makanan yang harus dipantangkan kecuali atas sebab-sebab&lt;br /&gt;
kesihatan yang tertentu.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
ii) Pilihlah makanan harian daripada gabungan makanan yang berasaskan&lt;br /&gt;
Piramid Makanan.&lt;br /&gt;
Makanan dikelompokkan mengikut kandungan zat - zat makanan utama&lt;br /&gt;
dan fungsinya. Ada 5 kelompok atau kumpulan utama makanan yang&lt;br /&gt;
ditempatkan di aras-aras tertentu dalam Piramid Makanan. Ini membantu&lt;br /&gt;
kita mengimbangkan pengambilan pelbagai jenis makanan dalam&lt;br /&gt;
sajian atau diet harian kita.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
iii) Makanlah dengan tetap.&lt;br /&gt;
Melangkau sesuatu masa makan boleh membawa kepada kelaparan yang tidak&lt;br /&gt;
terkawal. Ini akan menyebabkan kita makan makanan dengan berlebihan pada&lt;br /&gt;
waktu makan yang berikutnya. Apabila kita lapar, kita biasanya akan terlupa tentang&lt;br /&gt;
pemakanan yang baik. Mengambil snek di antara masa-masa makan boleh&lt;br /&gt;
menghindarkan kita daripada kelaparan tetapi jangan makan terlalu banyak&lt;br /&gt;
sehingga snek tersebut menjadi salah satu hidangan makanan (meal) kita.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Elakkan diri daripada tidak mengambil sarapan pagi, tidak makan atau&lt;br /&gt;
makan tengah hari sedikit sahaja dan makan malam dengan banyak.&lt;br /&gt;
Amalan yang baik ialah mengambil sarapan pagi, makan tengah hari dan&lt;br /&gt;
makan malam. Jika anda mengambil bahagian (portion) makanan yang&lt;br /&gt;
munasabah, maka tidak ada masalah bagi anda untuk makan makanan&lt;br /&gt;
yang anda mahu dan mengekalkan berat badan yang sihat.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. IMBANGKAN MAKANAN YANG DIMAKAN DENGAN AKTIVITI FIZIKAL&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
i) Umur, jantina dan aktiviti fizikal menentukan keperluan makanan anda.&lt;br /&gt;
Semakin tua umur kita semakin kurang keperluan kalori. Jika anda aktif&lt;br /&gt;
semasa kerja (dari segi fizikal) seperti buruh, petani dan kerja-kerja berat&lt;br /&gt;
yang lain atau terlibat dalam kegiatan sukan dan permainan dengan tetap,&lt;br /&gt;
anda perlu makan dengan lebih banyak. Kaum lelaki biasanya memerlukan&lt;br /&gt;
lebih banyak kalori berbanding dengan kaum wanita.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
ii) Capai dan kekalkan berat badan idaman.&lt;br /&gt;
Mengekalkan berat badan sihat membantu mencegah masalah kesihatan&lt;br /&gt;
dan memberi imej tubuh yang lebih baik. Terlalu kurus atau terlalu&lt;br /&gt;
gemuk meningkatkan risiko masalah kesihatan.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3. PILIHLAH MAKANAN YANG BANYAK MENGANDUNGI BIJIRIN DAN KEKACANG&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
i) Sumber utama tenaga harus diambil daripada bijirin penuh.&lt;br /&gt;
Bijirin penuh (wholegrain cereals) mengandungi karbohidrat kompleks dan serat&lt;br /&gt;
yang tinggi. Serat daripada bijirin membantu mencegah sembelit di samping dapat&lt;br /&gt;
membekalkan protein, vitamin jenis B dan beberapa jenis mineral yang penting. Contoh bijirin ialah nasi, hasil bijirin, pasta dan mi.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
ii) Kacang kering, &lt;br /&gt;
kekacang adalah sumber serat dan protein yang baik. Kacang kering dan kekacang seperti kacang&lt;br /&gt;
dhal, kacang merah, kacang hijau dan kacang hitam adalah sumber protein dan serat yang&lt;br /&gt;
baik.&lt;br /&gt;
Makan pelbagai jenis makanan berserat adalah sangat baik untuk&lt;br /&gt;
melawaskan saluran najis (bowel). Makanan berserat juga boleh mencegah&lt;br /&gt;
sembelit, penyakit usus dan buasir dan mungkin juga boleh mengurangkan&lt;br /&gt;

“If vegetarians just cut out meat from their diet without putting back plant proteins, they’re destined to be deficient in protein, iron, and zinc,” says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, LDN, author of The Flexitarian Diet and an American Dietetic Association (ADA) spokeswoman. That’s probably what accounts for the misconception that vegetarians must be anemic.&lt;br /&gt;
Plant-based proteins include beans, lentils, and legumes, and if you don’t get enough of them, you may experience fatigue, lethargy, and more than your share of colds and flu.&lt;br /&gt;
“For every ounce of meat you would have eaten, eat 1⁄4 cup of beans or lentils,” says Blatner. As the adage goes, eat beans at every meal.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D&lt;br /&gt;
Most people get their calcium and vitamin D from fortified cow’s milk and dairy products. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, who eat dairy and eggs, and lacto vegetarians, who eat dairy but no eggs, can similarly count on dairy to get enough calcium and vitamin D. But vegans, who do not eat dairy or eggs, can turn to fortified soy, almond, or rice milk—about two to three cups daily depending on their overall calorie needs—to fulfill these requirements. Check labels on these milks to make sure they are fortified.&lt;br /&gt;
“You can get some calcium and D, which ensures bone health and regulates metabolism among other functions, from cheese [if you’re not vegan], but cheese is higher in calories and saturated fats, so limit it to 1 or 2 ounces daily,” says Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD, an ADA spokesperson based in Los Angeles.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
OMEGA-3s&lt;br /&gt;
Pesco-vegetarians, or pescatarians, eat fish, but if you don’t include fish in your diet, consider other sources of omega-3 fats to fill that nutrient gap. Omega-3s lower cholesterol and keep your arteries from clogging.&lt;br /&gt;
You can nab these benefits from chia seeds, ground flaxseeds, walnuts, and walnut and flaxseed oils. Plant-based omega-3s are slightly different than animal-based varieties and may contain slightly less EPA and DHA compounds (the essential nutrients that provide health benefits) but, Blatner says, they are still highly advantageous to your health.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
VITAMIN B12&lt;br /&gt;
Vitamin B12 deficiency is really a concern only for vegans. If you don’t consume any animal-based products, you can get B12 from nutritional yeast. (Think of it as the vegan equivalent of Parmesan cheese.) If you’re vegan and don’t eat nutritional yeast, take a B12 supplement, Blatner advises.&lt;br /&gt;
Nonvegan vegetarians can get enough B12 from milk, eggs, yogurt, and cheese if they’re eating these items daily.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
FAUX MEAT FIXATION&lt;br /&gt;
One mistake some vegetarians make is basing their veggie diets on faux meats, replacing all meat with&lt;br /&gt;
processed mock meat such as fake corn dogs, faux chicken nuggets, and packaged veggie burgers. “Their grocery carts are not filled with beans and lentils, fresh fruit, and vegetables but with all these boxed, processed faux meats,” says Blatner. These products are fine occasionally and can be time-savers, but if you’re eating processed faux meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you may be loading up on sodium and sugars and forgoing taste as well as the health benefits of fruit, veggies, and legumes. Swap at least one meal of packaged meat substitutes each day for beans, legumes, or lentils.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
MINUS THE MEAT&lt;br /&gt;
Yet another group of vegetarians may just subtract the meat from their plates. If a typical meal contains&lt;br /&gt;
chicken breast, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, they’ll just skip the chicken breast and eat the rest. Problem is, they’ll fall short in many nutrients. Plus, sweet potatoes and broccoli don’t make a nutritionally complete meal; they contain no protein, iron, or zinc. Instead of simply skipping the meat, replace it with beans, lentils, or legumes or, occasionally, a faux meat; don’t just omit the meat from your plate.With a little knowledge and preparation, you can enjoy a healthy vegetablebased diet that is as nutritionally sound and fulfilling as any meat-based diet...&lt;br /&gt;

Ever wonder how elite athletes become so strong and powerful? Sport-specific training incorporating a technique called &lt;b&gt;plyometrics&lt;/b&gt; often gives them that competitive edge.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Plyometrics&lt;/b&gt; are exercises that cause the muscles to rapidly reach maximum force. In scientific terms, the muscles are eccentrically contracted and then immediately concentrically contracted to improve neuromuscular function. In plain language, a&lt;b&gt; plyometric&lt;/b&gt; exercise involves lengthening or loading the muscles before contracting or shortening them for a fast, powerful, explosive movement. The goal is to allow an athlete to perform better—pitch harder and farther, hit harder and faster, run faster, or jump higher, depending on the sport.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Runners may use plyometric exercises—for example, a standing long jump followed by a short sprint and high-knee skipping with jumps—to improve running performance. Powerful vertical squat jumps and fast zig-zag hopping can benefit basketball, football, hockey, and tennis players by improving speed and maneuverability.&lt;br /&gt;
But plyometrics also benefit the upper body by including exercises such as push-ups with a clap in between each one (think Rocky Balboa), throwing and catching a medicine ball, and swinging a free weight. Exercises such as these enhance performance for racket games, golf, baseball, and other sports requiring arm and back strength and power.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But plyometrics aren’t just for athletes; they’re also popping up in workouts for the average exerciser. The increasingly popular kettlebell workout, for example, is based on plyometric principles, and boot camp training and health club classes also include plyometric exercises. Even traditional fitness classes such as step and dance aerobics integrate plyometrics—when the instructor urges you to do those power moves that involve jumping, that’s plyometrics.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Are these exercises appropriate for beginners? A full plyometrics workout is likely to be too intense, but adding some basic plyometric-based movements to moderate workouts can increase fitness level and give beginners a sense of accomplishment without the pain and potential for injury. Always remember to thoroughly warm up before performing plyometrics. Then try these simple plyometric exercises to boost the intensity of a walking workout:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- Jump onto the curb while walking in your neighborhood. Start with five or 10 jumps and increase to 15 or 20.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- Hop sideways and back and forth 10 to 20 times. Try hopping from one foot to the other and also with both feet together.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- Add 10 seconds of very fast walking or running with powerful steps and arm swings. Try repeating this every 3 minutes during a 30-minute walk.&lt;br /&gt;

More than 25 million adults experience heartburn on a daily basis, and more than one-third of adults in the United States feel the burn at least once a month, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine.&lt;br /&gt;
“&lt;b&gt;Heartburn&lt;/b&gt; is a sensation of burning or pressure in the chest that occurs when stomach contents and acid back up into the swallowing tube [esophagus] from the mouth to the stomach,” explains Victor S. Sierpina, MD, author of The &lt;b&gt;Healthy&lt;/b&gt; Gut Workbook, which offers a helpful integrative approach to easing digestive distress. The pain, which typically arises after meals, can flare in the evening.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
“Heartburn is not related to the heart but is so called as symptoms are near the heart and can be mistaken for serious heart problems like a heart attack,” adds Sierpina.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
An occasional bout of heartburn may often be managed with preventive diet solutions, weight management, positive lifestyle changes, natural remedies or over-the-counter antacids. But if you experience heartburn frequently, see your physician because the symptoms could indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which may lead to serious problems over time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
California-based dietitian Jeannie Gazzaniga-Moloo, PhD, RD, an expert in gastrointestinal nutrition and national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, offers these suggestions to help you prevent the burn:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- SQUELCH ACIDS. When added to the acidic content of the stomach, acidic foods such as citrus and tomatoes can trigger heartburn because the combination results in more reflux to irritate the esophagus.&lt;br /&gt;
l MONITOR FAT. “Foods rich in fat take the longest to leave the stomach,” so there’s more time for reflux to occur while you digest the foods. Heartburn triggers include whole-fat dairy products, high-fat meats, fried foods, and fatty desserts.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- HOT HEADS BEWARE. “Spicy foods and onions will often trigger heartburn in some people for no particular reason other than that they just irritate an existing condition.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- CUT THESE CULPRITS. Since alcohol and caffeine ignite the burn, cut back or eliminate them. “They cause heartburn because they lower the pressure of the esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to reach the esophagus,” adds Gazzaniga-Moloo.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- WHITTLE YOUR WAISTLINE. Excess weight, especially around the middle, can exacerbate heartburn. “Losing weight may help lessen symptoms,” says Gazzaniga-Moloo.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- PORTION PATROL. “Eat small, frequent meals low in fat,” she notes, also recommending that you drink fluids at least 30 minutes before or after a meal and limit what you drink while eating. If you notice that a particular food bothers you, “Either cut it out altogether or try eating smaller portions.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sierpina, whose professional practice focuses on natural health approaches to disease prevention, offers more heartburn help:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
-TURN DOWN TRIGGERS. Avoid other foods, fluids, and substances that cause relaxation of the esophageal sphincter such as spicy items, tobacco, and peppermint.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. “Don’t lie down for at least two hours after eating, since the recumbent posture provides a lower resistance to gut contents backing up into the esophagus.” Sierpina suggests elevating the head of the bed by 6 inches to reduce the occurrence of heartburn when you recline or sleep.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- TRY A NATURAL RX. Gut-friendly licorice in the form of DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) may offer soothing support because “DGL is a demulcent and coats the stomach and esophagus,” explains Sierpina, who recommends taking two DGL tablets before meals. Aloe vera juice, rice bran oil, and slippery elm, he says, may all be useful in acute or chronic heartburn.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- SALIVATE. Chew gum between meals. “Chewing gum activates saliva, which is alkaline,” explains Sierpina. “It also stimulates esophageal and stomach peristalsis in some of the same ways eating does.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- HAVE A BANANA. Bananas are alkaline, high in potassium, and their texture and consistency soothe inflamed mucous membranes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
- CHANGE YOUR HABITS. Managing stress, being mindful of food choices, chewing well and slowly when eating, and drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day are also helpful, says Sierpina.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
“See your doctor if such measures and over-the-counter antacids such as Tums, ranitidine, famotidine, or omeprazole do not control symptoms,” advises Sierpina. However, in addition to those tips, there are other codes and features that aren’t immediately obvious to most users – so I wanted to provide a list of the top 6 of my favorite Facebook “hack” codes and tips to other Facebook enthusiasts out there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#1 – The Konami Code Lens Flare Hack&lt;br /&gt;This is a rather silly hack, but if you’re visiting friends who may not be very computer savvy –&lt;br /&gt;this is a very easy way to impress them with your hacking skills. Borrow their computer&lt;br /&gt;(or bring your laptop), log into your Facebook account, and then on the computer keyboard just&lt;br /&gt;type the following key sequence of arrows and letters exactly:&lt;br /&gt;UP-UP-DOWN-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT-B-A-&lt;enter&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then, click around on your Facebook page, or scroll up and down the page&lt;br /&gt;(this seems to work best), and you’ll discover a pretty cool display of lens flare effects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oddly, the effect isn’t horribly annoying because it disappears pretty quickly when you&lt;br /&gt;really need it to. It isn’t the most impressive hack though, because it’s probably the most&lt;br /&gt;common one mentioned across the net – but it’s still kind of cool and fun to play around with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#2 – Aye, Make Yer Profile a Pirate’s Page You Landlubber!&lt;br /&gt;The second profile hack is also one of the easiest to implement. Facebook offers users the&lt;br /&gt;ability to transform their Facebook pages into any language that they like. If you scroll down&lt;br /&gt;to the lower left corner of your profile page, you’ll see your current language setting. Click on this,&lt;br /&gt;and you’ll have a list of all languages available to you. Notice the English Pirate option?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ahoy matey – yer now a Cap’n! Now as you go through your profile page you’ll notice some&lt;br /&gt;pretty hilarious pirate variations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, the wall is the Plank, your profile is the Cap’n’s Log, and you can now either&lt;br /&gt;click a post as pleasin’ to me eye (like) or blabber t’yer mates (comment).&lt;br /&gt;It certainly removes the “boring” factor from your old standard Facebook pages.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#3 – Upside Down Status Updates&lt;br /&gt;If you’ve been on Facebook long enough, you’ve probably noticed a few people posting upside down&lt;br /&gt;status updates. They sure do think they’re clever don’t they?!  Yes, you too can be the envy of all&lt;br /&gt;of your friends and family by posting your updates so that people have to look silly by tilting their&lt;br /&gt;heads upside down so they can read it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of the people you’ve seen doing this have likely installed a Facebook app just to do so.&lt;br /&gt;However, I dislike installing apps because you always have to provide permissions to those&lt;br /&gt;applications to access your profile. A better approach is to use the free online application at&lt;br /&gt;FlipText to generate your upside down status update.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simply copy the upside down text from the lower text box, paste it into your Facebook status box&lt;br /&gt;and post!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#4 – Download Complete Photo Collections From Your Friends’ Profiles&lt;br /&gt;If you have a lot of friends on Facebook, you may not have the time to keep up with all of the new&lt;br /&gt;family photos they’ve posted – but you are very interested in them and would love to have them stored&lt;br /&gt;in your own private photo collection to review later. Well, thanks to a very cool FireFox plug-in call&lt;br /&gt;ed FacePAD, you can do just that. The add-on is awesome, and I would recommend that anyone with the&lt;br /&gt;resources to do so should send in a contribution to Arthur Sabintsev for his efforts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After you install the FacePad plug-in, make sure you select Tools-&gt;Add-Ons, and configure the&lt;br /&gt;options for FacePad so it has your correct Facebook language. Then, all you have to do is go to&lt;br /&gt;your friend’s photo albums, right-click on the title and select “Download Album With FacePAD.”&lt;br /&gt;That’s right, you’re not downloading a single picture – but an entire album.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you do, FacePad downloads every single image within that album into the download folder&lt;br /&gt;you’ve configured in FireFox. Don’t forget to organize all of those photos using JetPhoto, as&lt;br /&gt;recommended earlier by Jeffry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#5 – Schedule Facebook Status Updates With Sendible&lt;br /&gt;Do you like to keep your Facebook profile active, but you’re coming down with a cold and may be&lt;br /&gt;offline for a few days?  Maybe you’re taking a trip and won’t be anywhere near a computer for a week.&lt;br /&gt;Or maybe you’ll be playing hooky from work and traveling, but you want your colleagues and boss to&lt;br /&gt;think you’re stuck at home sick. Accomplish any of these wishes by using Sendible to schedule your&lt;br /&gt;Facebook status updates. This is an application Daniel covered earlier, so check out his article&lt;br /&gt;for more details.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But for Facebook specifically, once you sign up with Sendible, just click on Facebook and provide your&lt;br /&gt;Facebook login details. Sendible connects directly with your Facebook account.&lt;br /&gt;The, under “New Messages” click on “Status Updates“.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the next page you can schedule out as many updates as you’d like! This service is&lt;br /&gt;awesome – and you can distribute scheduled updates to a number of social networks including MySpace,&lt;br /&gt;Blogger, Twitter and more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#6 – Hide Your Online Status From Certain People&lt;br /&gt;Look, don’t feel bad about it. When I first joined Facebook I left my online status wide open.&lt;br /&gt;After a couple of weeks of getting inundated with nonstop chat requests, I simply turned off my&lt;br /&gt;online status completely. Problem solved. Except, there really were certain people I wouldn’t mind hearing from – is it really fair for a few chatterbox buddies to ruin your chances for communicating with everyone? Well, there is a way for you to selectively block your online status from certain&lt;br /&gt;people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All you have to do is open up your chat icon in the lower right corner of your Facebook display,&lt;br /&gt;click on Friend Lists, and create a new list called “BlockList.” Make sure after you create it that it’s configured under&lt;br /&gt;“Display these lists in Chat.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, all you have to do is either click “edit” and add the friends you want to block, or if they’re already online,&lt;br /&gt;just click their name and drag them under this new list. Once you’ve got everyone there who you want to block from&lt;br /&gt;see your online status, hover your mouse over the green dot to the right and click on “Go Offline.” Now, you appear offline to only those certain friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Facebook, unlike MySpace, is not really easy to tweak – which is actually a good thing. Gone are the days of those horrid eye-bleeding pages with pink flashing backgrounds and instant music that you can’t turn off. Sometimes reaching for your wallet is like a multiple choice test: How do you really want to pay?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
While credit cards and &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt;s may look almost identical, not all plastic is the same.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;It&#39;s important that consumers understand the difference between a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; and a credit card,&quot; says John Breyault, director of the Fraud Center for the National Consumers League, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group. &quot;There&#39;s a difference in how the transactions are processed and the protections offered to consumers when they use them.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
While &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt;s and credit cards each have advantages, each is also better suited to certain situations. And since a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; is a direct line to your bank account, there are &lt;b&gt;places&lt;/b&gt; where it can be wise to avoid handing it over -- if for no other reason than complete peace of mind.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Here are &lt;b&gt;10 places&lt;/b&gt; and situations where it can pay to leave that &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; in your wallet:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1. Online&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;You don&#39;t use a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; online,&quot; says Susan Tiffany, director of consumer periodicals for the Credit Union National Association. Since the &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; links directly to a checking account, &quot;you have potential vulnerability there,&quot; she says.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Her reasoning: If you have problems with a purchase or the card number gets hijacked, a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; is &quot;vulnerable because it happens to be linked to an account,&quot; says Linda Foley, founder of the Identity Theft Resource Center. She also includes phone orders in this category.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Federal Reserve&#39;s Regulation E  (commonly dubbed Reg E), covers &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; transfers. It sets a consumer&#39;s liability for fraudulent purchases at $50, provided they notify the bank within two days of discovering that their card or card number has been stolen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Most banks have additional voluntary policies that set their own customers&#39; liability with &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt;s at $0, says Nessa Feddis, vice president and senior counsel for the American Bankers Association.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But the protections don&#39;t relieve consumers of hassle: The prospect of trying to get money put back into their bank account, and the problems that a lower-than-expected balance can cause in terms of fees and refused checks or payments, make some online shoppers reach first for credit cards.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. Big-Ticket Items&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With a big ticket item, a credit card is safer, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney with the National Consumer Law Center. A credit card offers dispute rights if something goes wrong with the merchandise or the purchase, she says.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;With a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt;, you have fewer protections,&quot; she says.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In addition, some cards will also offer extended warrantees. And in some situations, such as buying electronics or renting a car, some credit cards also offer additional property insurance to cover the item.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Two caveats, says Wu. Don&#39;t carry a balance. Otherwise, you also risk paying some high-ticket interest. And &quot;avoid store cards with deferred interest,&quot; Wu advises.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3. Deposit Required&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When Peter Garuccio recently rented some home improvement equipment at a big-box store, it required a sizable deposit. &quot;This is where you want to use a credit card instead of a debit,&quot; says Garuccio, spokesman for the national trade group American Bankers Association.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That way, the store has its security deposit, and you still have access to all of the money in your bank account. With any luck, you&#39;ll never actually have to part with a dollar.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
4. Restaurants&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;To me, it&#39;s dangerous,&quot; says Gary Foreman, editor of the frugality minded Web site The Dollar Stretcher. &quot;You have so many people around.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Foreman bases his conclusions on what he hears from readers. &quot;Anecdotally, the cases that I&#39;m hearing of credit or debit information being stolen, as often as not, it&#39;s in a restaurant,&quot; he says.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The danger: Restaurants are one of the few &lt;b&gt;places&lt;/b&gt; where you have to let cards leave your sight when you use them. But others think that avoiding such situations is not workable.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The &quot;conventional advice of &#39;don&#39;t let the card out of your sight&#39; -- that&#39;s just not practical,&quot; says Tiffany.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The other problem with using a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; at restaurants: Some establishments will approve the card for more than your purchase amount because, presumably, you intend to leave a tip. So the amount of money frozen for the transaction could be quite a bit more than the amount of your tab. And it could be a few days before you get the cash back in your account.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5. You&#39;re a New Customer&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Online or in the real world, if you&#39;re a first-time customer in a store, skip the &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; the first couple of times you buy, says Breyault.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That way, you get a feel for how the business is run, how you&#39;re treated and the quality of the merchandise before you hand over a card that links to your checking account.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6. Buy Now, Take Delivery Later&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Buying now but taking delivery days or weeks from now? A credit card offers dispute rights that a &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; typically does not.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;It may be an outfit you&#39;re familiar with and trust, but something might go wrong,&quot; says Breyault, &quot;and you need protection.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But be aware that some cards will limit the protection to a specific time period, says Feddis. So settle any problems as soon as possible.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
7. Recurring Payments&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We&#39;ve all heard the urban legend about the gym that won&#39;t stop billing an ex-member&#39;s credit card. Now imagine the charges aren&#39;t going onto your card, but instead coming right out of your bank account.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another reason &lt;b&gt;not to use&lt;/b&gt; the &lt;b&gt;debit card&lt;/b&gt; for recurring charges: your own memory and math skills. Forget to deduct that automatic bill payment from your checkbook one month, and you could either face fees or embarrassment (depending on whether you&#39;ve opted to allow overdrafting or not). So if you don&#39;t keep a cash buffer in your account, &quot;to protect yourself from over-limit fees, you may want to think about using a credit card&quot; for recurring payments, says Breyault.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
8. Future Travel&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Book your travel with a check card, and &quot;they debit it immediately,&quot; says Foley. So if you&#39;re buying travel that you won&#39;t use for six months or making a reservation for a few weeks from now, you&#39;ll be out the money immediately.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 Hardware conflict&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often if a device has a problem a yellow &#39;!&#39; appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as &#39;IRQ holder for PCI steering&#39;. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2 Bad Ram&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3 BIOS settings&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer&#39;s display.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to &#39;yes&#39; to allow Windows to do this.).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4 Hard disk drives&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look up your video card&#39;s manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6 Viruses&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( www.symantec.com).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7 Printers&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer&#39;s performance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer&#39;s default settings and you may be able to carry on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8 Software&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don&#39;t do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message &quot;Starting Windows&quot; press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn&#39;t work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;9 Overheating&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com or www.coolit.com&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10 Power supply problems&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hosting? Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Network Connectivity&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The internet, in the most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within the internet can be large or small depending upon the cabling and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is the size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to the internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth therefore is measured in bits (a single 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and other information that is transferred between your computer and the internet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have a DSL connection to the internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to their location. All of these connection aggregate at your internet provider who then has their own dedicated connection to the internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your single connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computing needs as well as all of their other customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to the internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 other users (255/1.54).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traffic&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters - A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person&#39;s file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hosting Bandwidth&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the example above, we discussed traffic in terms of downloading an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creating traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, the web page is first downloaded to your computer (between the web site and you) which is then displayed using your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) .
