Bronchiolitis

After fighting off a nasty, phlegmy cold that made me completely lose my voice two weeks ago and then watching Bryan fight it off too, our poor baby boy caught it.

At first it was just a sniffle and a slight cough. Then Friday morning, I didn't like the sound of his breathing. It seemed more labored and crackly so I called the doctor's office and got him the earliest appointment they had, which was in the afternoon. I dropped him off at daycare since thanks to the snow, I hadn't been in the office for two days and the computers had all shut down from a power surge so I couldn't log in from home. He didn't have a fever and Bryan would be there in a few hours to pick him up and take him to the doctor, so although I felt guilty leaving him I knew it wouldn't be for long. Plus, he loves his teachers and they love him. He was so happy to see Ms. N!

Fast forward through the late morning and early afternoon to about 3 o'clock. Bryan calls and gives me the report from the doctor. Griffin has bronchiolitis and is to have nebulizer treatments every four hours and we are to go back Sunday morning at 8:30 for a check up. He had no fever at the time (he got one later that night), his oxygen saturation was perfect and he was a whopping 14 pounds, 7 ounces.

He just wasn't himself Friday night and most of Saturday, but this morning he was much improved and playing. He isn't eating quite as much, but he's not eating too little and he's not getting dehydrated, so that's good. Friday night was the saddest. As soon as I got home and gave him a big hug, he just didn't want me to let him go. I ended up sitting on the couch for a couple hours just holding him and letting him sleep on me. My poor little guy.

He hates the nebulizer, but it helps so much. I have to just hold him while staring and daydreaming or it would break my heart to force him through a treatment. His fever goes up and down and his cough is still nasty, but the doctor said his lungs sound much, much better. I guess I'll never be able to completely relax as a mother. I am always so terrified of losing him. I know this is a common infection for babies to have, but it scares the crap out of me because it involves his lungs. *sigh*

Off for an hour or so of sleep before the next treatment. Please keep Griffin in your prayers!

Coming Soon...

...lots of photos! I'm sitting here finally downloading the pictures from the camera. And when I say "finally," I REALLY mean it. There are pictures from Christmas '09, my sister's 16th birthday (also in '09), belly pictures from my pregnancy with Wally and Liz. Lo and behold, they are now on the computer, all 314 of them. I know 2 of those pictures are videos of Griffin playing and getting tired of tummy time.

So, in the coming weeks, I will be posting "old" Griffin pictures as well as current. It's going to take a little bit of time to go through them and choose the best, but now that they are on a computer, it shouldn't take me *too* long. Shall I leave you tonight with a couple early ones? I guess I could do that. Enjoy!

Looking pretty rough less than 24 hours after the c-section. Love the hat they gave Griffin - it has a fuzzball!

Sorry It's Been So Long!

Wow - almost a month has gone by with no blog updates. I'm so sorry, but it's been a bit of a hectic month so far.

January 2nd started the stomach bug in our home. Thankfully only Bryan and I got it. Griffin was spared.

Then I had to get back into the swing of working, which requires me to go to bed at 9pm most nights so that I can get enough sleep before Griffin's 4am-ish feeding. I may or may not get more sleep after that feeding. It just depends on Griffin's mood (read: if he's pooped in the last 24 hours, or if he's fussing in intestinal agony).

Then, my computer died. Well, hopefully not fully died. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it just needs a new battery. I ordered the battery Monday night and it just arrived a few minutes ago, so I'm excited to get home to try it out after snuggle time with my Wee Man.

Then, I got a cold. At first, it was just a sniffle. Now it's in my throat. I had no voice at all on Tuesday. I have very little voice now, and what voice I do have breaks like a teenage boy's. So....on to the actual updates.

Update on Griffin
He's perfect (duh!). We went to his 2 month appointment and he weighed in at 13lbs 2oz, was 23 inches long and a head circumference of 40 inches. He's dropped from 95th percentile in height and weight at birth to 50th and 75th, respectively. I'm not concerned with this, as we have some very-large-at-birth babies in our family who then end up average sized.

Griffin is slightly ahead of the curve for motor development apparently. The doctor was surprised that he was already swatting at and reaching for toys. He started that on Dec 31st - over a week before hitting the 2 month mark. The doctor called him "a little over-acheiver."

Last weekend he started really "talking" to us. He smiles a lot and it's so cute! He has an ordinary smile, but then he has the very happy smile where he smiles with his mouth and his eyes. He gave me that one last night as he was drifting off to sleep. Talk about melting my heart!

The reflux is much more under control, but if he misses/spits up a dose of the Prevacid, watch out! He gets very fussy at that point, and rightly so. Thankfully those days where he doesn't get the full dose are few and far between.

Update on me
I'm 100% healed from the c-section and I'm slowly weaning off of the breast pump. I'm down to 2 pumps per day. I would love to just call it quits and stop tonight, but I just can't risk another bout of mastitis. I will probably go down to 1 pump a day over the weekend and then by next weekend hopefully be done. It's so annoying to continue to pump when Griffin doesn't even take the milk now. We found that if he has both breast milk and formula, he gets horribly constipated (see above note on my sleeping habits jiving with his pooping habits), so since I've never made enough to exclusively feed him, we've just cut it out completely.

I'm back at work, back to volunteering on RESOLVE's helpline and currently considering becoming a Peer-Led Group Leader with RESOLVE. I am also reading some again (gotta do something while pumping!) and watching movies more. Griffin is getting into a slight schedule these days so it's getting easier to enjoy other activities since I sort of know when he'll be sleeping.

I've started a "supper club" with two of my friends. We are going to get together every other month at one of our homes. We will each be responsible for either the main dish, side dish or dessert. The person doing the main dish will also host the dinner. We are rotating the main dish/hostess duties so that we each get to do it twice. I'm very excited for this, and I have to thank my buddy Bridget for the idea (Bridget - if you still read this blog, email me! It's been WAY too long!)
Lastly, I've started to watch what I eat again and I'm trying to get some "movement" worked into my day. This "movement" so far has been 2 nights playing with our new Wii Fit Plus (thank you, Santa). It's a work in progress....

Update on pictures
Once again I have to postpone the pictures from the camera. I finally found the card reader, but just haven't had the time to pull the pictures off. Perhaps this weekend I'll get to it. It will be much easier once my computer is back up and running, which will hopefully be later tonight.
