NOT THE HAPPY COUNTRY ANYMORE

Image

Australia received its lowest ranking in twenty years in the World Happiness Report. It came in at 15th place.

The report takes most of its data from the Gallup World Poll that measures attitudes, behaviours and wellbeing of 140 countries.

Australia is still in the top ten for generosity, but only 44th for freedom. The latter is a real surprise for me.

What has become out of the lucky country, the fair go and tolerant country? Why have we become so entitled and selfish and why are so many unwilling to take responsibility for their own actions?

Why the relentless attacks on our local, state and federal governments, or just anyone else? Why are others always to blame and why are others always the ones that need to do something about it? Why not just stand up, be counted, and try making a positive difference to your community and country!

As someone once said, life is not about what we want, but what we need.

Too many people in Australia are having a whinge, because their expectations are too high and too unrealistic. Take a few steps back, assess where you are in life and how you got there.

Happiness is not a constant, and neither should it be. It is healthy to sometimes feel down and cry and let your emotions flow. Bad things happen to everyone, and we have to cope with them, without the blame game. Many, many people in the world are far worse off than we here in the lucky country are. Think about the Middle East, Gaza, Ukraine, etc. We are blessed to live in this peaceful and wonderful nation called Australia!

Have a real happy weekend, Freo!

SAVE FUEL! MAKE FREO YOUR EASTER DESTINATION!

Image

Fuel prices have increased drastically since that US madman started the war in the Middle East, and supply can be patchy, especially in the country. So why pay through the nose or risk getting stuck with an empty tank on the Easter long weekend, when you can change a country trip into a fantastic weekend full of fun and laughter in Fremantle!

The great and all FREE Fremantle International Streets Arts Festival is on every day of the long weekend. The cafes, bars, pubs, hotels and Fremantle Markets will be open, as will the shops, museums, etc. so there will be plenty to do for everyone. This is a great family fun long weekend for all.

Come to Freo and delay your trip down south, or up north, until fuel prices have come down and supply stabilised.

Why risk having a shitty trip away from the big smoke, when Freo is a great alternative! See you all here. We’ll make you feel very welcome!

FENCES FOR EAST FREMANTLE OVAL?

Public comments will soon be invited by the Town of East Fremantle to seek feedback on a proposed picket-style fence at the East Fremantle Community Park (Good Grocer Park).

The proposal has been put forward by the East Fremantle Football Club following direction from WA Football (the sport’s governing body) that a level of perimeter control is now required for WAFL fixtures to continue at the venue.

This requirement has been imposed by WA Football and not by the Town!

East Fremantle Mayor Tony Natale said Council remained committed to transparency and to preserving the core principle of East Fremantle Community Park as an open, community‑focused precinct.

“East Fremantle Community Park was designed and delivered as an accessible public space,” he said.

“While this requirement has come to the Town unexpectedly, Council is committed to ensuring the community is informed and has the chance to share its views before any decisions are made.”

At its March Ordinary Council Meeting this week, Council provided in‑principal support to undertake community consultation only, noting that:

– No decisions have been made regarding any works
– The Town has not endorsed the proposals prepared by the East Fremantle Football Club
– The Town continues to work collaboratively with the Club to review and understand WA Football’s requirements

Mayor Natale emphasised that community access remained central to any future considerations.

“Our intention is to understand community sentiment, gather all relevant information, and ensure any future decision is made carefully, transparently and in the best interests of the whole community,” he said.

POINT STREET CARPARK TO CLOSE IN APRIL

Image

Image

The Point Street carpark will permanently close from 13 April 2026 to enable construction of new Purpose‑Built Student Accommodation in the inner East of Fremantle.

The carpark will be demolished to make way for a contemporary student housing project by Sirona Urban, which will deliver high‑quality-392 student beds- accommodation with modern amenities and provide students with direct access to the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle Station, and nearby public open space.

City of Fremantle Chief Executive Officer Glen Dougall said the development, delivered by Sirona Urban, is a significant step in strengthening Fremantle’s residential population and supporting a more vibrant and connected inner city.

“This purpose‑built student housing is an important development that will deliver new, high‑quality and affordable spaces for students to live and study in Fremantle,” Dougall said. “It will help stimulate local economic growth and foster more socially connected and active inner‑city communities.”

There are many parking options available in the area, including near the new Woolstores, and along Beach and Parry streets, etc.

The carpark closure indicates that Sirona Urban is serious and want to start construction soon, although they still need to get the final approval for this fantastic project from the South Metro Development Assessment Panel on March 26.

The Elders Woolstores site, opposite from the Point Street carpark will be developed by Human Urban into an eight-storey co-living, office, retail and hospitality hub, delivering more student accommodation.

The two great projects will see a real transformation of the area at historic Princess May Park. Wonderful!

GREAT REVAMPED LITTLE CREATURES

I went with my friend Neil to have a few drinks at the revamped Little Creatures last night and was very impressed. Three new bars, all overlooking the Fishing Boat Harbour, two alfresco areas also with harbour views, and there is also The Loft above that, that was not open yet, that has even better views of the harbour and sunsets.

There are long comfy sofas, nice chairs, bar stools, a huge number of taps for a large variety of beers, and the place just feels right and quite cosy. Very important for this hearing aid wearer was that the music was not loud and appropriately just in the background.

I can’t show you photos though, since Little Creatures rejected my request last week to take photos of the venue and instead supplied me with boring shots that did not show the ambience of the place.

Service was very friendly, and I can only blame my accent-is it Swiss, Danish, Austrian, Dutch or German?- that the Shiraz I ordered became a Chardonnay. No big deal.

The Diavolo pizza Neil and I shared was tasty, but way too soft, so the topping slid off the base. This happens in most pubs in Fremantle, so here my advise to the chefs. If you don’t know how to make a proper pizza base, or don’t care, don’t put it on the menu! It’s embarrassing for the kitchen and venue to serve pizzas that have a brewer’s droop.

UPGRADE FOR FISHING BOAT HARBOUR

Image

Key marine infrastructure upgrades at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and the Woodman Point Recreational Boating Precinct will deliver modern, safer facilities for the commercial and recreational fleet.

A $4.8 million contract has been awarded to WA-based company Jetty and Marine Constructions Pty Ltd for the two design and construction projects.

The 38-year-old fixed section of Jetty 1 at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, which houses up to 16 vessels, will be replaced with a modern floating jetty and pen system – continuing the improvement of facilities at the harbour for penholders and users.

At Woodman Point the oldest of the ramps has been in use for more than 40 years and is beyond its design life. The four-lane western ramp will be rebuilt with new floating holding jetties to make launching easier and safer for users.

Both projects require detailed design work prior to construction commencing later this year. Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) will work with the contractor to ensure disruption at both locations is managed to limit inconvenience to users. The work at both locations is scheduled for completion in 2027.

For more information about the works and to view the designs, visit the Transport WA website.

A HOT FREO AUTUMN START

Image

We are in the third week of autumn, but it still feels very much like summer, with temperatures in the mid to high 30C this week. But there will be relief from the heat, as BoM predicts it to be much cooler next week.

Anyhow, for us here in gorgeous Freo good weather means having a great excuse to enjoy a nice cold drink in one of our many lovely bars and pubs. I took the colourful photo at Gage Roads on Victoria Quay yesterday morning.

For me, anything that takes my mind off the madness of the Middle East war is a good thing, so I’ll be trying out the revamped Little Creatures this evening.

ON LINE VOTING FOR COUNCIL ELECTIONS?

Would it be desirable to have electronic, on-line voting for local government elections? The City of Belmont is considering it, in the hope of increasing voter participation.

Local Council Elections are notorious for having very low voter participation. Fremantle is doing better than most councils in that regard, but still does not even get 40 per cent of voters returning their ballot papers. That is not good enough.

LGA’s get criticised and scrutinised by voters more than any other form of government, but when it comes to filling out a form and sticking it in a post box, most people can’t be bothered. I have no idea why, as voting is our democratic privilege.

With the disappearance of Australia Post boxes in our streets, and the likelihood that postal deliveries will stop in the near future, more modern ways of voting might have to be considered. But how safe would electronic voting be?

What do you think, Freo?

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE HOUSING CRISIS

Posted in city of fremantle, communication, community, fremantle, homelessness, housing, politics, walyalup by freoview on March 16, 2026
Image

It is still two weeks away, but the next Politics in the Pub event will be about housing-again. It seems we have been talking about the housing crisis and homelessness for decades, without seeing much improvement, so what can be done?

Yesterday I published a post about the development application for converting a shop in Point Street into two homes, is that something property owners of vacant shops and governments should be looking at?

The Politics in the Pub on March 31 at The Local Hotel in South Fremantle will be moderated by former Fremantle Mayor Dr. Brad Pettitt, and you can see who is on the panel in the image above.

Be part of the solution. Offer creative, out of the box ideas, because the housing issue needs to be dealt with faster and better, and with far more urgency than is currently happening.

CONVERTING VACANT SHOPS INTO HOMES

The City of Fremantle have received an interesting development application for a shop on the corner of Point Street and the Westgate Mall, to be converted into two residential homes. I believe that is a great idea.

I am a big fan of the old High Streets we used to have in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, etc. where people lived where they worked and where the mix of retail and residential, plus the odd cafe and bar, created a very safe environment.

My family lived behind our corner shop, next to us the greengrocer also lived behind their shop, over the road the butcher and baker lived above their shops, and on the opposite corner the pharmacy had a large home above it.

And in between all those shops were street-level homes, where curtains were seldom closed, hence creating a sense of safety and passive surveillance when one was out on the street.

Vacant shops always feel as if we are neglecting our cities, so maybe converting some of them into homes is part of the solution to end homelessness.

A DAY IN A BLOGGER’S LIFE

Image

On my way to historic Arthur Head yesterday morning I noticed big white balls in the sky and took a photo of it. I checked the Fremantle Ports shipping movements and discovered that it is the RV Investigator research vessel that is “Helping to unlock the mysteries of the oceans”

Then my retail day at the Glen Cowans Photography Gallery next to the Roundhouse started, meeting people from all over the world and talking about the madness of the war in the Middle East. Many had to change their flights, others had flights home delayed, and all complained that there was an increase of cost.

Image

Late in the afternoon there was a big wedding on the lawn and I managed to get a shot of a very long vintage, red stretch-limousine and the bridal party on the lawn, overlooking Bathers Beach.

Image

After closing the gallery I went for the scenic Victoria Quay route home and took the photo of the RV Investigator with the Silver Dawn cruiseliner behind it. That’s a day in a blogger’s life for you. 🥰

COUNCIL AMALGAMATIONS PLANS AGAIN?

WA Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley has expressed that she believes local councils need to have a discussion about council mergers, as some of the smaller ones are struggling.

This is not a new idea of course. Former Premier Colin Barnett tried LGA amalgamations in 2015, but the referendum failed. The City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle did not merge, as was proposed, because a handful of East Freo voters were against the merger.

The interesting fact about that is that if those in East Fremantle who supported the merger had not voted, the amalgamation would have happened, as the Town of East Fremantle would not have reached the 50 per cent of voter participation required.

I believe that LGA mergers are plain and simple common sense, especially for small councils, that are struggling to deliver services, due to a small ratepayers base, hence not enough money to go around and do all the things communities expect councils to deliver.

LGA mergers will only happen though if a state government is brave enough to bite the bullet and make the decision. If it is left to parochial local communities, council amalgamations will remain just a good idea, and will never eventuate.

PTA PLANS FOR FREMANTLE LINE UPGRADES

Image

Interesting to read in the POST community newspaper today that the Public Transport Authority has projects in planning stages to make upgrades along the Fremantle railway line, including a better level crossing at the North Fremantle station.

I wonder if these plans also include a new level crossing from the Fremantle Ports Passenger Terminal to Beach Street. Since the PTA demolished the bridge there has been no rail crossing for cruise ship passengers, but for walking all the way along Peter Hughes Drive to the crossing just west of the train station. That is not good enough.

SPORTS BAR APPROVED FOR SOUTH TERRACE

Image

Fremantle Council narrowly approved the development application for a two-storey sportsbar on the Hungry Jacks site, on the corner of Essex Street and South Terrace. According to a regular Freoview reader, Council was split 4-4 but the Mayor voted to approve the development.

This was one of those very difficult decisions. Is it better to be realistic and pragmatic and approve a mediocre building to replace a bad one, or should we always wait for perfection? The vacant Hungry Jacks building was an awful eyesore for far too many years, so I am happy to see it demolished.

We will now get two new buildings, side by side, as the Sailing for Oranges site has already been approved for a four-storey pod hotel development.

WHERE IS THE PUBLIC GOLF COURSE UPGRADE?

Posted in city of fremantle, city planning, fremantle, golf, local government, sport by freoview on March 10, 2026

I reported following on March 2, 2024, so two long years ago:

The Fremantle Public Golf Course at Montreal Street, adjacent to Booyeembara Park is going to get a substantial facelift, after Fremantle Council agreed to a land transfer with Belgravia Leisure.

The $ 19 million upgrade of the popular golf course will see the development of a multi-storey driving range, a new clubhouse, bar, food and retail outlets, so that should make it even more of an attraction. There will also be adjustments to the design of the course.

But I wonder if anything is actually happening there, and if not, why not. Have the plans been scrapped, Freo City?

FOREVER 18 MINI-FEST FUNDRAISER AT CLANCY’S

A live music fundraiser supporting youth suicide prevention will be held at Clancy’s Fish Pub on Sunday, March 15, in memory of young musician Amberly Lynch.

The Forever 18 Mini-Fest is presented by Amby’s Army, an initiative established in 2025 following Amberly’s death on March 12, 2023, shortly after her 18th birthday.

Amberly was a musician who loved performing and bringing people together. Her family created Amby’s Army to raise awareness of youth suicide prevention and support initiatives that encourage young people to seek help and speak openly about mental health.

Headlining the event is rising country-pop artist Emily Joy, a graduate of WAAPA and Berklee College of Music who is gaining recognition on the Australian country music scene. Her chart-topping single Barricade saw her named a grand finalist in the Toyota Star Maker competition, followed by a West Australian Country Music Award and a national tour with Adam Brand. She has built a growing national audience, with more than 130,000 followers and over four million online views.

She will be joined by soul and blues performer Sgt Hulka, folk-rock duo Shanks Pony (featuring Amberly’s father Todd), and emerging electronica artist HDC.

The event aims to raise funds, increase awareness, and bring the community together in support of youth suicide prevention.

Forever 18 Mini-Fest will be held at Clancy’s Fish Pub, with doors opening at 5pm.

Proceeds from the event will support youth suicide prevention initiatives through Amby’s Army.

WONDERFUL FREMANTLE HIGH STREET

I get asked often asked what my favourite Fremantle street is. Do I have one? There are so many streets I like especially, but not restricted to, the historic West End of our beautiful port city.

I love Slip Street in Fremantle Port, but also Phillimore Street, Pakenham, Mouat, Henry and Cliff streets. But being put on the spot, historic High Street is my favourite street. I walk there every day of the week.

I have no doubt that if High Street were in an European city it would be a promenade for pedestrians and cyclists, but we are a long way away from that kind of city planning in Australia.

Where else can you find such a historic shopping and hospitality street that ends up on a beach? A walk through the historic Whalers Tunnel and one is at, now shark protected, Bathers Beach. The firing of the cannon behind the Roundhouse, that is on every day of the week at 1pm, is a great tradition. Stunning views from Arthur Head along High Street to the Fremantle Townhall.

I adore those amazing heritage buildings, that tell us so much about our past, and connect our history with the present. There are so many details to look at, so much great architecture and the odd garcoyle. The street looks so different from when the first sunlight hits the buildings in the mornings, compared to late afternoons, when the sun sets behind the Roundhouse.

Like the Fremantle Society, I wished they would put the cupolas back on some of the old hotels, but who is willing to invest in it? That might be a nice project for the 2029 bicentenary.

High Street was the place where my friends and I started our Friday nights pub crawls when we were a lot younger. A few drinks at the Fremantle Hotel, from there to the P&O Hotel, where the local butcher did a chook raffle and where a trio played music. On to the Orient Hotel, a quick look at the Fremantle Workers Club in Henry Street, and continue to the National Hotel. If we could still walk, Clancy’s or the Sail&Anchor would be our final destination. What great memories, if only I could remember them. 🥳 🥰

Of course High Street has changed, like most of Fremantle, but that is not a bad thing. I really like having Notre Dame University in our West End. It is great to see all those students and staff activating the once dormant part of the inner city, and it is fantastic that Vin Populi and Ode to Sirens are now there, and that the new Owens Hotel will open above the Common Bakery cafe next week.

How can one not love Bill Campbell’s second hand book shop, and over the road the large cave that is the Record Finder, or the view from the rooftop bar and sky deck of the National Hotel.

High Street, like the entire West End of Fremantle, is very special. It is kind of sacrosanct, because heritage is so fragile. It should be protected from inappropriate and too high development at all cost. There are better locations for that East of Walyalup Koort.

High Street is my favourite street, but Fremantle is my all time favourite place. My home. A place I love!

NEWS FROM THE FREMANTLE TRAFFIC BRIDGE

Image

The Swan River Crossings Communications team have released information about the progress of the work on the Fremantle Traffic Bridge Freoview readers will be interested in, so here it is:

Works to dismantle the old bridge were underway the day after its closure to traffic and are making strong progress. In early February, large concrete sections of the old bridge deck were removed and parts of the timber deck dismantled. This is the first of six stages of bridge removal outlined in our step-by-step Bridge Removal Process Factshee

Finishing the edge beams will allow us to start constructing the new bridge deck while we remove the existing bridge. This includes installation of T-Roff beams.

Similar to the edge beams, the T-Roff beams are precast and delivered to site by truck. A total of 46 T-Roff beams will be installed by the cranes. Eight of these beams weigh approximately 100 tonnes and will be placed at the base of each tower and on the abutments.

The 38 smaller beams will weigh approximately 70 tonnes each – which is equivalent to approximately 18 empty 40 foot shipping containers. Each beam will connect into the edge beams on the eastern and western sides, providing a secure structure on which to build the bridge deck. The first T-Roff beam is expected to be installed in March.

HUNGRY JACKS DEVELOPMENT NOT GOOD ENOUGH?

The proposal for the development for a sports bar tavern on the former Hungry Jacks site on the Cappuccino Strip will be coming back to Fremantle Council, after it was deferred at a previous council meeting.

The proponents received development approval for the image on the left, but have since want to change the design and make the new building more affordable.

The Officers Recommendation is for the proposal to be refused for following reasons:

  1. The amended development is inconsistent with clause 3.6.2 of the
City of Fremantle’s Local Planning Policy 3.6 Heritage Areas as it will
have a negative impact on the heritage values of the Central City
    Heritage Area.
  2. The proposal is inconsistent with clauses 67(k), 67(l), 67(m) and
67(n) of the Planning and Development (Local Planning Schemes)
Regulations 2015 – Deemed Provisions as it will negatively impact a
place of cultural significance and have a negative impact on the
cultural heritage significance of the area by virtue of the siting, scale,
architectural style and form, materials and finishes of the proposed
    development.
  3. The proposal is inconsistent with State Planning Policy 7.0 – Design
for Built Environment, specifically the Context and character, and
Quality and aesthetics Design principles which will result in a poor
    design outcome.

I get that we want the very best in Fremantle, but I sometimes wonder if in cases such as this pragmatism should apply, and acknowledging that the Hunry Jacks building has been a vacant eyesore on our tourist strip for far too many years, and that although the new proposal is far from exciting, it would still be an improvement to the status quo. Should we compromise? What do you think?

I wonder how the Elected Members will debate this.

GO THE SOCCER MATILDAS!

Walking past the big Sam Kerr mural on the Scoop HQ building at Norfolk Street, I thought about the Matildas Australian female soccer team playing against Iran in Brisbane in the Asia Cup this afternoon, WA time.

The Tillies won their first game 1-0 in Perth against the Phillipines, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

It is great that Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler are back in the national team, after having been absent for a long time, due to serious injuries.

I feel for the team from Iran. All those young women worried about what is going on at home, and wondering if their families and friends are safe.

The games is live on TV TEN from 4pm here in WA.

Go the Tillies!!!

CURRENT LOOK AT FREMANTLE DISTRICT POLICE COMPLEX

Image

The fast-progressing Fremantle District Police Complex, next to Fremantle Oval and Fremantle Hospital, is starting to get a face. It will not stay like this, as there will be plenty of cladding around the building, that should be completed by the end of this year.

J Shed artist Jina Lee told me on the weekend that her public art piece, a stone sculpture, is due to be installed in June at the Plaza in front of the complex, that is next to the Old Synagogue pub.

PARKOUR MAINTENANCE PARKED?

The Parkour section of the Esplanade Youth Plaza was closed for three months during the big school summer break, due to maintenance, according to the City of Fremantle. When I walked by yesterday afternoon the signs had gone and Parkour was open to the public again.

But for the life of me, I could not detect any improvements or repairs at all. Parkour, like the rest of the EYP looked neglected.

What’s going on, City of Fremantle?

FREMANTLE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY

Image

The W.A. Dragon Boat Festival returns to the Fishing Boat Harbour this coming Sunday, March 8, bringing an explosive fusion of high-speed racing, cultural brilliance and the full power of Chinese New Year in the Year of the Fire Horse.

From the moment it starts at 10.00am, the harbour surges to life as crews from across Western Australia race down the water. Drums shake the shoreline, paddles carve the water with precision and the entire waterfront transforms into an arena of excitement and colour.

But the racing is just the beginning. Fremantle’s iconic waterfront becomes a vibrant, all-out Chinese New Year celebration filled with movement, music and tradition. Dragon and Lion dancers sweep through Mews Park and roar across Bathers Beach, firecrackers crackle through the air and traditional blessings fill the precinct with powerful symbolism. Every corner bursts with rhythm, drumming and storytelling.

The event will open with a Smoking Ceremony, welcoming visitors onto Country. There will be a special appearance by the Wadumbah Dance Group, whose traditional Nyoongar dance and storytelling will impress the crowd.

At the heart of the cultural celebration, Yaolin seventh-generation Kung Fu Master Sifu Ken Wu commands the stage with a showcase of Dragon and Lion Dancing, ceremonial drumming and martial artistry.

This is a really fun day, so make sure to head out to the Fishing Boat Harbour on Sunday!

LET’S FIGHT THE MADNESS AND NONSENSE!

Posting some golden oldies, in my desire and need to fight back and reject the negativity, nonsense and madness in the world. I accept that I won’t be able to make much of a difference in global politics, but I am convinced that the good, positive people of Fremantle can make our own little port city an even better place than it already is.

We are so lucky to live here in Freo on the beautiful west coast of Australia, so let’s stick together and show tolerance for those who are different! Racism is often just ignorance and fear for the unknown, so reach out to each other and get to know different cultures.

Respect and humanity is what is desperately needed, not division and hate, because most people in the world are good, caring and peaceful. Let us stand up and absolutely reject those who want to pull us apart and destroy our multicultural society!

WHEN THE WORLD IS F…ED!

Yesterday was the first time in a very long time that I did not publish anything here on Freoview. People contacted me to ask if I am alright, and I am, well, kind off. Thank you for asking! But the world is not OK, so maybe that is why nothing worth reporting was going on in wonderful Fremantle. Maybe our little city is in shock, as is the rest of the world, about what is going on in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump, the megalomaniac who believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, has started an all out attack on Iran, together with his war mongering Israeli mate Netanyahu. This time it is supposedly about nuclear weapons, but we all remember well the search for weapons of mass destruction, that were never found, after Sadam Husein and many other people were killed.

While many countries in the world experience a cost of living crisis and people are struggling, trillions of dollars are wasted by shooting thousands of missiles and drones all over the Middle East. The mass destruction of residential homes and killing of innocent civilians is all acceptable collateral damage for those who are hell-bend on aggression.

He who promised peace to all the naive and gullible Americans who voted for him, wants to take over Canada, Greenland and Cuba, and has kidnapped the President of Venezula and his wife. It’s the same mad man who told Volodymyr Zelenskyy that he would start World War III if he did not compromise and hand over Ukrainian land to Russia. WW III has now started, thanks to Trump and Netanyahu.

We suddenly live in a world full of hatred and disrespect for those who are different. Diversity is not wanted, but division relished by the narrow-minded and ignorant. Immigration, multiculturalism and multi-faith is no longer what many Australians want, and I do not understand that. Selfishness, greed, zealots and ignorance are the enemies of a functional society, not those who come from other countries.

Australian millionaires support anti immigration groups with donations of millions of dollars and the Australian democracy is in disarray with dysfunctional oppositions in state and federal parliaments.

Where to go from here? I don’t know. I despair. I am depressed from watching the cruelty, madness and inhumanity. I am deeply disappointed that so many people believe it is necessary that we have wars and violence and that killing of children is inevitable.

I am lost, Freo! I am so deeply lost and feel so powerless. And I have no idea how to cope with it. Where to go from here?

SHIRLEY BURBIDGE 25 YEARS AT THE ROUNDHOUSE

Have a look at this remarkable Fremantle woman, Shirley Burbidge. Today she celebrated her 25th year as volunteer tourist guide at the historic Roundhouse on Arthur Head. She should receive Fremantle Senior Citizen of the Year for that commitment!

Shirley also volunteers as guide at Fremantle Port and takes people around Victoria Quay.

Image

Shirley wrote: “I have met thousands of people from all over the world  (including an Iranian family today) and enjoyed talking to them all. Set up the cannon for countless firings and still get a buzz from this task.”

Today’s firer was one of many folk affected by the air space closure in the Middle East. James and family were 90 minutes out of Perth when their plane turned around  and returned to Perth Airport. Luckily they have friends here who collected them and took them back to their house. They are all having a day in Fremantle to make the most of the extra days of vacation.
The Iranian family have lived here for the last 12 years but had brought out Grandma, Auntie and children for a holiday, arriving here just before the conflict started. They don’t know what will happen next and are extremely worried about family left behind in their country.

Volunteering at the Roundhouse is a great way of meeting people from all over the world and telling them all about our wonderful city and history.

Image

The Roundhouse is open every day of the year, but for Good Friday and Christmas Day, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The cannon is fired behind the Roundhouse at 1pm every day. It’s a lovely tradition.

Thank you, Shirley, and all volunteers who give so much to their community. You are all very special people!
