Book Recommendations to Spark Your Reading Habit #1

Hello Toad-ers!

I remember posting a few months back about my intention to return to reading. Not that I ever left, but the habit had become so slow that it almost felt like cheating each time I called myself an “avid reader.”

I’m not sure if I still qualify, but the effort is certainly there. While there are still millions of books to read and catch up with, I thought of sharing some of the few books that have caught my eye!

These are in no particular order, and heavily influenced with my need to digest as many stories as I can.

2. The Vegetarian by Han Kang, Deborah Smith
3. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart
4. Yo! By Julia Alvarez
5. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
6. The Bower Bird by Ann Kelley
7. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
8. Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree, Daisy Rockwell
9. All the Names by José Saramago, Magaret Jull Costa
10. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
These include recent reads and books I read many moons ago.

Full moon

March 8, 2026
It is a full moon tonight.
Cashew is the colour of moon.
The moon is 2 cashews combined.

Roads bend and swirl.
Ice creams have a swirlier swirl.
I am supposed to learn how to handle the wheels of my life.
I can’t even manage walking on my own two feet.

People are flying and trying
I am still walking. Or just staring at times
A full moon. A cashew moon.
Clouds have gathered over my mind.

There is no rain. Cold wind.
The sun is hiding.
I am also hiding.
Layer upon layer of thoughts.
Sometimes I forget the shape of my fingers, only wordless minds remain.

I don’t know if I miss my friends or sister or him or myself.
I do miss beaches. And a sense of relief.
No escape feels enough.

At the end of a long journey. Long time.
Sits acceptance.
And my lonely full moon.

I wish upon Earth many more happy moons and smiling cashews.

(If you have ever eaten a cashew,
You are a full moon too)

Borrowed time

March 8, 2026
I stand on the battleground
Of many many wars
Watch the chaos
Until everyone falls

This is the origin
Of the stream that flows
Blood of my brothers and sisters
From today and ages ago

Smoke from burning pyres
Pollutes the sky once blue
The burning flames
Spark revenge in few

Clouds black and grey
Envelope us all
Gloom, regret, despair
Who can escape the fall?

For reasons of all kind
We have killed each other
Differentiated on basis of caste, religion, gender
Then why do you call me brother?

I wish we would understand
We are alive for moments five
Transient, fickle, small
Unlike nature, that will forever thrive

I have nothing to say
To all who live
But just this one advice
That I would like to give

Nothing is yours
Nothing is mine
Just us living
On borrowed time

Dry Leaves

March 2, 2026
The dry leaves cannot fix the cracks in the soil beneath.
But maybe, if you let them blow to the wind
And water the roots enough
New leaves, tiny and green, will spring
From the same branches that were once
Full of blooming flowers.
