The 12 Provinces Tour – Looking back and looking forward

And then it’s 2025 and The 12 Provinces Tour is officially over! I can’t believe how fast the year went by… It was a year full of wonderful experiences, in which I learnt a lot :)

November: Flevoland – The 12 Provinces Tour

It took me a while, but I finally visited the province of Flevoland. The truth is that Flevoland is just a bit boring. It’s the youngest province of the Netherlands – literally rising from the water – and didn’t officially come into existence until 1986. Therefore, there is no rich history with lots of beautiful old buildings; it’s all relatively new. I finally settled on a Nature Park just outside the capital of the province: Natuurpark Lelystad.

October: Friesland – The 12 Provinces Tour

As I mentioned before, we were on vacation in the north of Drenthe at the start of October. Since we were also close to the provinces of Friesland and Groningen then, I decided to take all three on at once. Groningen and Drenthe have already been tackled, so this week, it’s time for Friesland!

October: Drenthe – The 12 Provinces Tour

At the start of October, we were on vacation in the north of the province of Drenthe for two weeks. During our vacation, we visited places in Drenthe itself, but also in the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. The footage of Groningen you have already seen; Drenthe is coming this week, and Friesland next week – so stay tuned!

September: Groningen – The 12 Provinces Tour

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I was thinking of adding Groningen to October as well, since the three provinces (Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen) are so close together, and we would be on vacation in Drenthe then… Well, so I did!

On a sunny Friday, October 4th, we travelled to Groningen. Yes, just as with Utrecht, the capital of the province of Groningen is also called Groningen. I had been to this city before, but it had been quite a few years, and I never truly explored it…

August: Overijssel – The 12 Provinces Tour

August didn’t really go as planned, but on Friday the 13th (of September), I finally went on a trip to the province of Overijssel. I had decided on Deventer long ago, but due to various circumstances, it just hadn’t happened yet – until now…

July: Limburg – The 12 Provinces Tour

On a sunny day in July, I travelled to the province of Limburg with my good friend Simone to explore Weert and Roermond. These places are only a ten-minute trainride away from each other, so it felt like the perfect combination for a day trip.

I had been to Roermond for like an hour or so, about 6 years ago, but had never been to Weert. Both places looked quite nice, and since they were in the north of the province of Limburg, it meant we didn’t have to travel for 3 hours (or more) just to get there… :)

June: Zeeland – The 12 Provinces Tour

After switching around my schedule and assigning the province of Zeeland to June, I already knew I would spend a week or so at my parents’ (who still live there) and make the most of it. And so I did! I visited three beautiful places on three different islands and had a great time exploring.

May: Zuid-Holland – The 12 Provinces Tour

Exploring in the province of Zuid-Holland during the month of May just didn’t go as planned – at all. I had so many plans for this province, but it just didn’t happen. After deciding to ‘extend’ the month with an extra week, it still came down to the very last weekend before I went somewhere. Maybe it’s catching up with me. Maybe I’ve still not fully realised how much of an endeavour this tour really is – both mentally and physically. But, I did go somewhere eventually, and it was a completely new place as well: Schoonhoven.

April: Noord-Brabant – The 12 Provinces Tour

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure which places to visit in the province of Noord-Brabant. There were a few nice places I’d been before (like Breda or Den Bosch), but I also wanted to explore a new town. We already had a family weekend planned in Oosterhout in April, so I figured I could at least take a bit of time to explore that city while we were there. But what else?
