television. 2nd

Television is an audio-visual medium that was invented to fascinate all walks of life without fail. (Leigh 2001). In this modern era, television has become a necessity for the people as it is widely used to distribute current information. In developed country, more than 90% of households have at least one set of television at their home (Sharif 1999). According to American Time Use Survey (2003), watching television have became the most favourite past time in America followed by other activities. Unfortunately, most of them have misused it for negative interest. If television has the capacity to developed anti-social society, then surely it can also be used positively (Sharif 1999). Due to it, people started to raise their concerns regarding to the pros and cons of television. However, I strongly believe that watching television gives more benefits to us as it helps in the learning process that provide us with valuable information that can be used as the point to talk with friends and enhance critical thinking.

Watching television provides an additional dimension in learning (Sharif 2001). It can be use as teaching tool which likely to improve the understanding and retain information easily. Students tend to understand better when they see and hear what they are learning rather than just read (Leigh 2001). Moreover, it provides the young with wealth of information (Rutherford 2002). As proven by Harnessing Television (2001), pre schoolers are more likely to master more vocabulary when they watch education and cartoon programs in the television. They will able to recognise the letters of alphabet and even completes the words before they started school (Rutherford 2002).

Besides that, watching television also enhance critical thinking as it is an exciting and engaging medium to concentrate on. It develops curiosity when we watch it. There’s variety of techniques shown especially on present science, geography and other subjects (Leigh 2001). Simultaneously, it helps the student to dominate the learning syllabus smoothly. Moreover, watching television also helps to refreshes the viewers. Their focus will alter and able to think solution of their problems in a more balanced view (Rutherford 2002). Other than that, watching reality based program can help us solving conflict in life. With the discussion made in the program, it also gives fresh splendid ideas and developed critical thinking of the viewer (Sharif 2001). Eventually, they will get the piece to solve the puzzle.

Additionally, general information from television was passed to the viewers can be used as their talking point with friends. The news item can increase the knowledge of what’s happening in the world. Ideally, it informs the young about global problems that they might not bothered at all if they don’t watch television. If there’s disaster happen any where in the world, people will know. Evidence proves that famine had happened in Africa, it have motivated other to do charity works by collecting funds (Sharif 1999). It inspires people to be concern and take part in their role. It also pushes more pressure on council, major companies, and government. They will be able to influence the major decision that be made the government as there’s consideration on the reaction of the television audience that force to be democracy (Rutherford 2002).

Ultimately, watching television moderately can give us priceless knowledge. Despite of all these advantages, there are critics who just focused on the unhealthy and excessive viewing (Rutherford 2002). Therefore, again I strongly believe that advantages of watching TV outweigh its disadvantages.

Middlesbrough striker Scott McDonald paid for his international goal drought on Tuesday when he was cut from Australia's provisional squad for next month's World Cup in South Africa.

McDonald, Crystal Palace midfielder Nick Carle and Norwegian-based defender Jade North were omitted when coach Pim Verbeek trimmed his provisional squad to 28 players ahead of this week's training camp in South Africa.

McDonald, 26, a prolific scorer for Celtic with 65 goals in 126 appearances before switching to Middlesbrough in the English Championship last season, yet again failed to find the net in Australia's 2-1 win over New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday.

McDonald has now failed to score in 16 matches for his country and his omission leaves Verbeek with just three recognised strikers for the World Cup.

Belgian-based Nikita Rukavytsya and Josh Kennedy of Nagoya Grampus will back up Harry Kewell in the striking department.

Verbeek admitted McDonald had struggled as the lone striker in his 4-5-1 playing system, and had missed out for that reason.

"Scotty is a typical two-striker player and that is where he feels happy also," Verbeek told reporters.

"But we don't play with two strikers. We play with one striker up front and wingers, so Scotty doesn't fit in this system. He knows it, and he has tried everything."

The 28-man squad is one more than originally flagged after Verbeek convinced Football Federation Australia to allow him to take four goalkeepers into the South African training camp.

Youngsters Tommy Oar and James Holland are still in the training squad, but Verbeek said they were effectively going for the experience and were unlikely to be part of the final 23-man World Cup squad when it is announced on June 1.

Verbeek said the players from the provisional squad who did not make the final 23 would be kept on in South Africa for the duration of the tournament.

The Socceroos will leave on Wednesday for Johannesburg.

They play friendlies against Denmark on June 1 and the United States on June 5 in Roodepoort ahead of their opening World Cup Group D match against Germany in Durban on June 13.

summary .

McDonald who got a very good goal scoring record at club level at celtic FC, failed to show it on international level. it has been 16 matches that he failed to score. yesterday the match between two rivals have been tensed but the australian got a very undeserved win over the new zealand as they grabbed a last minute winner. however in the match, McDonald failed to shine, eventually he was drop out of the world cup squad.

critique

although we have achieve so many things, not every time is going to be good to us. life is just like a circle. there's a time when we are on top and sometimes we are at the bottom. we have to work hard in everything and never take things for granted even if we thinks it is easy.

final draft. junk food

Junk food which is known as unhealthy food lacks nutrients (Smith 2005).According to The Food Show 2005, the junk food is loaded with chemical addictives. Cook High school has slowly changed their type of food sold to a healthier food since 2001. However, their profits have dropped significantly as in 2003 their profit drops to less than $10000 compare to 2001 which they obtain more than $10000 ( school news 2005). Junk Food may give the school lots of profit but there’s more harm especially on the development and growth of the children and it also causes many problems (The Food Show 2005). I strongly agree that junk food should be ban in the school canteen.

One of the problems of the children consuming junk food is that it affects the children health which can lead to obesity (Tran 2005). Eating junk food will increase the kilo joule intake which leads to weight gain. Merely 50% of the children in Australia are consuming more than the recommended intake of sugar and fat (Australian Nutrition 2004). This is due to the eating habit. During the last three decade, the school children brought their lunch from home which is usually a piece of fruit or sandwich. However today, more than half of the students bought their lunch from the school canteen where chocolate, snack bars, ice cream and canned drinks are ready available. They can eat whatever they want. The dental health of the primary children have decrease which cause by the consumption of junk food (Tran 2005).

Other than that, junk food contains chemical addictives to enhance the taste and colour of the food. According to the Food Show 2005, consuming junk food can also affect the children behaviour. The children behaviour can be improve if they reduce their junk food intake. The teachers have noticed tremendous improvement of discipline after the children lunch break when they don’t eat junk food (Food Show 2005). More over excessive Junk Food can cause hyperactivity and lack of focus in class (smith 2005). Therefore, the ban of selling junk food at the school canteen can improve the students’ health and character (Food Show 2005).

Besides that, selling junk food at school causes massive litter problems. Cans, crisp packets, cartons and plastic containers are scattered everywhere in the school compound (The Food Show 2005). Junk Food is the major contributor of litter at school. By stopping the selling of junk food at school, it will reduce the problem (smith 2005). If the litter problems can be solved, the school can focus more on the maintenance projects that will benefit more on the schools (Food Show 2005).

Having Junk Food in schools has more harm. At school, they can be taught about the effects on junk food and the benefits of eating healthy food (Tran 2005). Thus, their eating habits can be changed (Food Show 2005). Therefore, I strongly believe that selling of junk food should be banned at schools.

The era of procrastinations of half measures, of soothing and baffling expedients of delays is coming to its close. In its place we are entering a PERIOD OF CONSEQUENCES. (Sir Winsron Churchill) Global warming refers to the continuous rising of Earth’s the temperature due to greenhouse effect. Initially, the greenhouse gases maintain the Earth’s temperature at 33oC that sustain the great biodiversity of life in Earth. However, industrial revolution in 18th and 19th centuries boosts up the demand for energy which mainly obtained from combustion of fossil fuel. (Woodford 2006) Concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased drastically for the past few years. Now, it has been more than 300ppm which is far off compared from decades ago and it keeps increasing. Usually concentration of CO2 was only about 250ppm. This change helps the temperature to increase up to 0.6 oC-0.9 oC. (Riebeek 2007) Apparently, with the rising of temperature, it has changed the geography of the world. At the Colombia national glacier park, the glacier retreats year by year and there’s more avalanche which make things worst. 75 years ago in Patagonia, the tip of South America, there was a vast of ice on top of it. But now, it’s already gone. This isn’t a coincidence but it happens everywhere in the world. The climate change is caused by global warming and prompt action should be taken before its too late.

For the record, the ten hottest years was recorded in the last 14 years. The hottest year was on 2005, these high temperatures send enormous heat waves which can cause death. In 2003 heat wave, it has killed more than 35000 people across Europe. In the same year, India’s temperature also reached 50oC which is also hit new record. West America also faced the same situation as there was more number of consecutive days with more than 1000oC. (Gore, 2007) An overall, all cities faces the same thing. (Nzone Tonight 2008) The increasing of temperature also affected the oceans’ temperature. Hurricanes, typhoon and tornados, all of them set new records in the early of 21st century. Things can’t be taken for granted as the scientists have once said that there will be no hurricane in the southern America but in 2005, it hits Brazil. The worst ever hurricane was Katrina. This has been explained scientifically. As oceans temperature increased, the velocity of wind will increase. The moisture content will also increase and it gained greater energy when it hits the land. (Gore, 2007)

With the climate changes, the rain pattern also changes and causes more storms. Besides, it also relocates the precipitation. In 2005, in just 24 hours, the rain in Mumbai falls about 37 inches and the water level reached seven feet. China also was hit by heavy rains.(Gore, 2007) According to some prediction, the climate change could make about 200 million of people become homeless in 2100 because of flooding and other phenomenon likes hurricanes (NASA,2009).However there are also places that faced draught. Darfur and Niger were among those places that faces the worst situation of draught. Due to high temperature, soil evaporation makes the draught even worse. Lake Chad which is near Sahara desert became dried after a few decades as the lake being evaporated. (Gore, 2007) In addition, drastic changes in weathers have also put animals and plants in danger as they are unable to adjust themselves accordingly to the weather in a short period. For example, parts of coral reefs died due to the warming of the ocean (Woodford 2006)

Without any actions taken by now, things can get worsen. We are capable of getting used to the evolution of climate as it changes slowly. (Nzone Tonight 2008) Some of us might not realise it. However sooner or later, it will be too late for us to take actions. To avoid such catastrophic, we as the residence of the world should overcome the damage that we’ve done. Some practical ways are choosing energy-saving fluorescent lamps in home, switch to utility company which generate energy from renewable source and bicycle or walk instead of driving in daily life. (Chris Woodford 2006) If everyone is doing the simple things such as recycling unusable product and plant more trees it will gives greater impact. Besides, using appliances that are electrical efficient can help to arrest the effect on global warming. (Nzone Tonight 2008) What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know; it's what we know for sure that just ain't so. (Mark Twain) Instead of believing we aren’t the cause of global warming, well think again.
