About me

Kate Evans BSc MA

‘Hard times are coming when we will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, and can see through our fear stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being and even imagine some real grounds for hope.’
Ursula K. Le Guin. In her acceptance speech at the National Book Awards in 2014 for the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters

I am a writer. I write creative non-fiction, fiction and poetry. My intention is that my writing be purposeful and that, where I can, I support other people to find the joy in creativity.

I am currently writing a Thrutopia series called Futures Remapped: The Chronicles. I intend to release the first part, The First Years, in episodes from my website, starting July 2026. The First Years, was short-listed for the World of Books Sustainable Story Award 2025

A Thrutopia is a type of ‘speculative’ fiction which looks to a more hopeful future where humans rediscover their place in nature and live more in harmony with each other. The challenge is to work out (in fiction) how we get from where we are now to there: THRUTOPIA.

As well as the writing, I have been doing a great deal of research. As Margaret Atwood said about her dystopian The Handmaid’s Tale, everything I put into Futures Remapped: The Chronicles, humans have done, are doing or could do tomorrow.

From 2020 to 2024, I was under contract to Constable/Little Brown and they published my Donna Morris crime series. These are set in Scarborough, the North Yorkshire coastal town where I live. The landscape and the sea are characters in themselves, integral in creating the atmosphere of the stories and a way of exploring the internal emotional landscapes of the characters. The stories are told from the point of view of probationary DC Donna Morris. Peri-menopausal, in her fifties, Donna has worries and secrets of her own as she settles into what she thinks will be a temporary stay in Scarborough. However, like many before her, the sea, the town and the people hook her in and she finds she does not want to leave.

‘Kate Evans delivers a gripping crime debut with a truly original policewoman as the central character. Highly Recommended.’
Myles McWeeney, ‘Irish Independent’.

A Wake of Crows is ‘Well written and without flashiness, this believable police procedural deals with guilt, vengeance, love, a serial killer with a God complex and redemption. It is quiet, effective and moving.’
Natasha Cooper, ‘Literary Review’.

‘A Wake of Crows’, ‘Drowning Not Waving’ & ‘No Justice’ are available in all formats. To purchase my novels visit: A Wake of Crows by Kate Evans | Hachette UK (littlebrown.co.uk) bookshop.org or Amazon or your preferred bookseller. Most libraries also have copies!

I trained as a psychotherapeutic counsellor and am very interested in the connection between writing and good mental health. Between 2008 and 2009, I was poet in residence for HAFNEY, working with staff and patients at Scarborough Hospice and in a ward for end of life care.

I created two word-based art installations for the Coastival festival in Scarborough, one based on the writing and life of Edith Sitwell.

I enjoy running creative writing workshops and occasionally offer mentoring to writers.

I am a volunteer at Conversation Club run by Scarborough Friends of Refugees and a Trustee for the human rights and anti-poverty charity: All Together for Dignity

    Hi Kate,

thank you so much for the Scarborough Mysteries – absolutely loved them.

So rich a narrative, multi layered, revealing ( to an old age male pensioner )

PLEASE could you write more about Donna, I’ve only just met her and would love to get to know her better.

    THANK YOU

    Hello Kate,

My mum loves your books. She adores murder mystery & she’s from Scarborough so your books are perfect.

She has all of your books apart from The Art of the Imperfect.

I know it’s a long shot but do you know where I could get this from?

    Thank you – Catherine.

Thanks Catherine, that’s so lovely to hear. There seems to be a dearth of The Art of the Imperfect (maybe it will be valuable one day!) and I took it down from Amazon ages ago at the request of Constable. I do have one spare copy. If you email me (email on the welcome page) with an address and your mum’s name, I will gladly send it to her or you. Best wishes, Kate
