Marathon Training Diary - Post #1

Yesterday , I went to FTAAA and registered myself in the full marathon event for the KL International Marathon.

My training "officially" started yesterday with a 10 km run with Albert and Chow from Klang Pacer Athletic club. Both are going for the full marathon distance. The 10 km run was done at a easy pace (63 minutes). I noticed that although the pace was well within my capacity, my running biomechanics was worse than normal. This is really saying something as my normal running style is not that efficient and fairly sloppy.

Today it started to rain heavily in KL at 5.00 pm. What else could I do except run in the treadmill at Sweat Club ? I completed 8 km using the "River Run" program which programs the treadmill for an undulating course. My speed was 10.5 km/hour. I became very bored after 5 km but I had to complete the 8 km distance. I really need to bring up my training to speed with the marathon only 2 months away.

Vietnam : Post #6 Back In Malaysia

I am writing this from PC in Malaysia. I am still on leave today but will be busy running around doing various chores.

My 17 days trip to Vietnam (10 Dec. to 27 Dec.) was generally enjoyable and free of problems. Unlike in 1995 and 1997, travelling in Vietnam nowadays is much easier. There are many travel agencies offering competitive products like tours , tickets etc.

Places like Hanoi and Hoi An which used to have a severe shortage of hotels now have hundreds of hotels. Room prices can be as low as USD 6.00 and for this you get a hot shower, TV, bathroom a clean bed in a individual room.

Language is sometimes a problem but much less so nowadays. Back in 1995 and 1997, I met a few young Vietnamese learning English. Nowadays there are more people learning English. The hotel staff English skills has certainly improved.

On the downside, there are more tourists more than ever in HCM City. I even spotted a few tourists from Africa although they are all young (20's) and I am not sure what they are doing in Vietnam. In Bangkok, many African tourists are buying goods to sell back in Africa. They are mostly older (30's) people but the younger ones I saw in HCM City are either genuine tourists or may be peddling drugs or scams.

I now have to start my training for the KL International Marathon just 2 months away. I am feeling the pressure already.

On a side note, the Internet is great for travellers. I could call Malaysia from HCM City using an Internet phone at the many Internet phone shops for just RM 0.40 per minute. This morning I checked what Telekom Malaysia rate for calls to Vietnam ; 10 times more at RM 3.50/minute.
I think I have to set-up an Internet phone at my house.

Vietnam : Post #5 Running In Vietnam

A Malaysian runner asked me to check if there are any running events or races held in Vietnam. I've checked in the two largest cities in Vietnam; Hanoi (capital- 3 million population) and HCM City (7 million pop.). What I did was call the Hanoi and HCM City Hash House Harrier (HHH) club member and asked him if he knew of any running races or triathlon events in Vietnam. The answer given was they have not heard or knew about any running or triathlons events held in Vietnam. If I may quote the reply from the Hanoi HHH runner "They are not really into this thing(running)".

Most towns and cities in Vietnam are not suitable for running. The roads and streets start filling up with motorcyles and other vehicles as early as 6.00 am. In most towns, there are no public parks to run in. The only city which I've seen that has large parks to run in are Hanoi, Hue and HCM City. Danang (Central Vietnam) has traffic free stretches suitable to run along the beach.

For HCM City, I consciously selected my hotel as it was located only 100 m from a public park. I ran there in this morning. I had to start very early at 5.45 am and the park already was full of people walking , doing Tai Chi and playing badminton. There were only about half a dozen "runners" (joggers, really). The surface was not very good for running as it consisted of concrete slabs with embedded small peebles. A really hard surface to run on. Even worse, the concrete slabs had gaps in between which made the surface uneven. The park was quite small; I ran around the rectangular perimeter in just 3 minutes (600 m, I think). I ran for about 8 laps until I had to give up because of the impact on my legs.

I found another park about 500 m away but it was a gated park which only opens at 7.30 am (??). The reunification palace is in this park but it is a good place to run if the opening and closing times are more suitable; I plan to recheck again this evening.

Vietnam :Post #4 From Ho Chi Minh City

It's 8.00 pm here in HCM City. I am sitting in a cybercafe on the Pham Ngu Lao Street, the budget area in District 1. For the first time in more than 1 week after I left Hanoi, I can access blogspot.com. I stepped into the first cybercafe and I found there was no firewall to block access to blog sites. I guess being in HCM City, the commercial capital of Vietnam, 1700 km away from the Hanoi, the political centre of Vietnam helps. Censorship be dammed here!.

Next to this cafe, a noisy karaoke in progress. Outside on the street there is a continuous buzz and honking sounds from motorcyles. This city has a noticeable human energy. Everyone is busy moving ahead, to make more $$$. Despite the recent commercial freedoms in Hanoi, HCM City is still where the action is.

A summary of my recent travels over the past 10 days (in chronological order).

  • 2 days in Ninh Binh, 90 km South of Hanoi. Post #3 was about this place.
  • I stayed to Hanoi for 1 night and took a flight to Hue. It was my 2nd visit to Hue. This time I visited the museums which I didn't go to in 1998.
  • After Hue, I took a bus to another town, Hoi An. Visiting this town was the main purpose of my trip to Vietnam. The town was a trading centre for Chinese, Dutch etc merchants n the 15 and 16th century. There is area in the old town which has been preserved as it was in the 15th century. It reminded me of Malacca but with historically and architecturally more aunthentic. Hoi An is a Unesco Heritage site.I also visited another Unesco heritage site, 30 km from Hoi An, My Son. I spent 4 days in Hoi An.
  • Today from Hoi An, I took a taxi to Danang and a 1 hour flight to HCM City.

After spending 2 weeks in Vietnam, this is what I can say:-

I found out 2 days ago that China is now the 6th largest economy in the world. In a few years , it will overtake France and the UK. There are only 2 other countries in the world which can rival the economic dyamism of China; India and Vietnam.

Everyone wants to move ahead here. Democracy and a free society ? How important are these things? Well in a survey carried out a few years ago among young people (50 % of Vietnam's population is below 30 years old), democracy was ranked 9th among 12 things considered important among young people.

As long as the communist party keeps the economy capitalist, few people care about democarcy and political freedom.

Vietnam : Post #3 Back in Hanoi (Friday)

I returned to Hanoi after spending 2 nights in a town called Ninh Binh. The town is located 90 km south of Hanoi. Like many towns in Vietnam it is an utterly charmless place filled with shops with grey concrete walls. Here most of the buildings or shops are not painted - the concrete is left bare. You can imagine what a town consisting of grey concrete buildings. At Ninh Binh, most of the shops are closed by 8.00 pm It gets dark in Northenrn Vietnam by 5.30 pm.

Last night I went for a massage to repair my aching body after a motor bike ride througg bone jarring back country roads. I sat pillion while the motor driver as we rode among the rice fields and villages. The ride was very scenic as the area is dotted with limestone formation and hills. Like Ipoh but with lots of rice fields, villages and buffaloes.

Earlier in the morning, I took a 2 hour boat ride to Khenh Ga floating village. Unfortunately the houses near the river banks which the travel guide books said were on stilts were nowehere to be seen. Instead there were brick or stone houses along the river banks. There were plenty of things to see and photograph like ; farmers planting rice, people ccathing fish but one sight stood out.

At two different places, there were several men, women and even children breaking rocks and carrying them to boats. The source of the rocks is the limestone hills. It must a dangerous work to do as I saw huge rocks and earth raining down down some slopes.

I should mention that women work very hard here in Hanoi and all over Vietnam. At the above 2 sites, women carry the rocks in baskets placed over their head. In Hanoi, there are many women selling fruits, food, slippers and many other things. They carry the products on a long bamboo stick with the goods tied to the ends. Sometimes they carry their products on bicycles. The most common product sold by the women is fruits. They start work very early and continue until 9.00 or 10.00 pm. I cannot imagine aMalaysian woman doing these things.

Today the skies in Hanoi are sunny. I will be sure to run around Hoan Kiem lake this evening.

That's all for today. I wil be flying to Hue , 1000 km south of Hanoi tomorrow afternoon.

Vietnam : Post #2 The Immortal Ho Chi Minh

Everyone dies but there are men and women who continue to live on forever. They have become an immortal but there are various degrees of immortality. Some are legendary figures remembered in "recorded" history or ancient tales. They may or may not historically exist. Others were once living individuals, their deeds recorded in history books. A minority exist in both books and has a physical/bodily presence.

And so this was the case, this morning when I trotted out to the Ho Chi Minh Maosoleum to see the Man himself; Ho Chi Minh. He was the founder of the Republic of Vietnam, more than 60 years ago he declared independence from French rule in Hanoi. He died I think in 1969, 36 years ago. His wish was to have his cremated ashes scattered over three places in Vietnam. That did not happen of course. Such a person is more than a person really.

A perpetual symbol was needed by the communist goverment of North Vietnam. After 1975, when North and South was reunited by force, the country went through a period where Marxist economic systems were implemented. Rice farms in the Mekong Delta (South Vietnam) was collectivised. The result was a fall in rice production and a nation wide famine.

For 10 years after 1975, the now united Vietnam went through severe hardship caused by the foolish and misguided policies dictated by the central goverment. Food shortages were common and inflation rates shot up to hundreds of percent in one year.

In 1986, the situation in the country was perilious. Drastic change was needed - a new policy was introduced "Doi Moi" or Renovation. An open market economic system was gradually introduced. Almost 20 years later, the policy has been very successful in improving the economy. Vietnam's economic growth rates has beeb around 7 percent per year over the past 10 years. Even the Asian economic crisis in 1997/1998 failed to make a dent.

One thing hasn' t changed though. The goverment is still not an elected entity by the citizens of Vietnam. Today, Vietnam is only one of five remaining communist nations on the planet. This is where the immortal Ho Chi Minh comes in handy for the goverment.

His speeches and writings are extracted for mass public campaigns. His images are shown on posters and numerous television programs. You can't miss him really his visage stares out from on every Vietnamese Dong currency note and coin. Ho Chi Minh is truly an immortal in Vietnam.

A bit of news about my running activities in Hanoi. This morning at 6.30 am I ran around Hoam Kiem lake. It was quite cold during the 5 minutes from my hotel to the lake. The place was already crowded when I got there. There were Tai Chi groups, women dancing holding red colour fans, badminton and sepak takraw players. The majority were walkers. There were only 3 or 4 runners. Most are dressed in track suits and track pants. There were no branded shoes in sight.

It was incredibly refreshing to run in the cold temperature. I think I was easily running at 5 min per 1 km pace. One loop around the lake is about 1.6 to 1.8 km. I ran for four laps (6.4 to 7.2 km). I did not see anyone else running close to my pace. I guess there are very few Vietnamese runners around; everyone is too busy making a living. Perhaps only the well off or those living in relatively more developed countries can Afford the time for exercise.

Tomorrow I will be going on a tour to Hoa Lu and Tam Coc, 3 hours South from Hanoi. I will stay for 2 nights in Ninh Binh town before returning to Hanoi on Friday.

Vietnam: Post #1, The New Hanoi

It's been 3 days since I landed in Hanoi Vietnam. My previous trips to Hanoi were in 1995 and 1999. Perhaps the spanking international aiport was a taste of what to come in Hanoi. All things changed but not always for the better in some respects.

The best place to stay in Hanoi is in the Old Quarters area. The entire area is criss-crossed with several streets each specialising in a particular trade and product. There is a street with shops selling shoes. Other streets had shops selling silks, mirrors, dried meat, tofu etc.

In the morning, after breakfast I used to take a walk from my hotel (Nam Phuong), one of the few mini hotels available at that time to Hoan Kiem Lake. Crossing the roads sparsely trafficked by vehicles, I strolled around the lake enjoying the cool refreshing winter air. (Both of my trips were in winter)

In the evening, after dinner I liked to walk around the Old Quarters. By 7.30 pm, most of the shops would be already closed. Families would sit outside their shops or houses to eat dinner. Children played on the pavement and streets. There was hardly any traffic. By 10.00 pm, things became much quieter. The area was deadly quiet with very few vehicles or people lingering on the streets.

Oh how things change in just 6 years!

My hotel now lies among assorted shops catering for the commercial and tourist trade. There are 2 mini hotels 20 meters apart. Just next door to my hotel, an establishment with bright red and green neon lights rudely advertises "Foot Massage". There are two souvenier shops, several travel companies. There is a shop selling CD, VCD and DVD all fakes of course, copies may be made upon request.

Crossing the streets entails having a wide angle view from a 180 degrees. Lest one get runs over the motorcycles or cars. Unimaginable a few years ago. Frankly I was quite shocked at the number of vehicles passing through the area at all hours of the day.

I never thought the goverment would allow such development in staid and laid back Hanoi. A city graced with elegant French buildings, tall Banyan trees and filled with legendary lakes. This is the capital city of a communist goverment for heavens sake!

The Old Quarters is now like that other city, in the South that the North Vietnamese army overran in 1975 - Saigon renamed Ho Chi Minh city after their victory. I wonder what uncle Ho would think about Hanoi now?

Today I went on a tour with eight other tourists. It was the first time in Hanoi for them. I told them tabout he Hanoi I visited years ago. I guess they will never experience the Hanoi I knew then. The new Hanoi is here now for good.

December 2005 Training Plans

After 3 days of rest, I started to run again. Today I had to run on a treadmill because it rained again. It was a short run of 5 km at 11.0 km/hr.

In past years, I mostly do maintenance training during December with low mileage (5 km). December gives me the channce to rest and recover from the past 11 months of training and racing. Normally I start base training in January gradually increasing mileage and the frequency of runs.

However this year I won't be doing maintenance training in December but will be doing base training a month earlier. The main reason is the KL International Marathon is only 3 months away. Only 3 months to prepare for a marathon (my first one).

You can bet I will be bringing my running attire and shoes to Vietnam. I will be there from 10 to 26 Dec, arriving in Hanoi on 10 Dec. It is now winter in Northern Vietnam. The temperatures ranges from 15 to 21 deg. C, - perfect temperatures for running.

There will less frequent updates and mabe none at all until I return to Malaysia.

Have a good and safe December everyone!

Singapore Half Marathon 2005 Race Report

After my debacle at the same event last year, I hope to do a better time this year (last year's time=2 hrs 16 minutes).

Day 1, Friday : The trip to Singapore
The bus from Klang left on time at 10.30 am. I SMSed Kenneth to inform him I was on the way as he had planned to bunk in with me on Saturday night.

The bus stopped at two places; Seremban and Johor Bharu for a total of 20 minutes. I should not complain about the 'delay' as the bus ticket was much cheaper (RM 35) than the VIP buses like Aeroline (Rm 80). I SMSed Jamie to check the time for the bib collection. For Friday, it was up to 10.00 pm so I decided to collect the bib on the same day.

At the Malaysia-Singapore causeway, the bus slowly crawled forward to the Malaysian immigration office amidst an awful traffic jam. I went through immigration swiftly and boarded the bus for the ride across the causeway. At the Singapore immigration, after inspecting my passport, the immigration officer also asked for my identity card.

I reached a place called Golden Mile Complex. After I got down from the bus, I was in a daze and had no idea where I was. There was Thai pop music blaring, people speaking Thai and sundry shops bearing intelligible Thai script. I wanted to buy a bus ticket for the trip home on 6 Dec. 2005. Not knowing where to go, I walked into the complex and noticed many foreign currency shops, money remittance shops, Thai supermarket, restaurants, food stalls and a few seedy looking karaoke cum bar joints. The place looked nothing like a typical sterile and hygenic Singapore shopping complex. It had a Malaysian feel with all the dirt and grime strewn on the floors and walls. Eventually I found a place to buy my bus ride home for SGD 27 (RM 60).

I boarded a taxi for the short 15 minutes trip to hotel. After check-in, I still had to wait in the lobby for the rooms to be cleaned By now, it was already 6.00 pm. I contacted Kenneth and we arranged to meet him and his friend at Suntec to collect the bibs.

After unpacking and taking a shower, I left the hotel at 7.20 pm. It was a 10 minutes walk from the hotel to Suntec. There was plenty of smartly dressed Singapore girls around but I was so eager to get collect my bibs that I did not pay much attention.

This year, the marathon expo was housed in a room instead of a open space. I lined up in a long queue and spotted Kenneth ahead. He grinned and waved, so I jumped the queue. Sorry to the guy and girl standing behind me who gave me a dirty look. He introduced me to his friend Ah Meng.

After we had collected the bibs, we moved on to the Sports and Fitness Expo. Although there were more exhibitors this year, most were hawking services and products of fringe interest to runners. The exhibitors that had relevant products were Adidas, Nike and a company with Powerbar products and Polar heart rate monitors. Unfortunately for Adidas and Nike their range of products and sizes displayed were limited. Nike especially deserved a slap on the wrist, when we asked about their prioes, they said the prices were the same as the retail outlets. What is the point of being there if they do not offer any discounts to the participants?

After wandering around the expo for 30 minutes, we lost interest and left Suntec to Orchard road for dinner and other activities. Here our interest was to do some people watching which we did so contentedly. Unfortunately, our plan to continue was disrupted when rain fell as we were about to go out from the MRT station after crossing to the opposite side of Orchard road . We waited for the rain to abate but gave up when it became heavier. It was time to go back to the hotel.

Day 2, Saturday : The night before the race
In the morning. I came across CW (Penguin) and family on the street when I came out to look for a place to eat breakfast. He pointed out a place to eat breakfast and that is where I went. After breakfast, I had to go to Pasta Mania to book seats for the Carbo loading dinner. The manager was surprised when I told her to book 27 seats from 6.30 pm onwards.

I spent the afternoon at Queensway with Kenneth the Navigator with his trusty PDA and a bus guide acting as the bus route geek. The place was full of shops selling all kinds of sport and outdoor equipment. We visited several shops oogling at shoes unlike the previous oogling session at Orchard road the night before. We bought 2 pairs of ASICS GT-2100 shoes.

It was almost 5.00 pm when we reached the hotel. Kenneth would be my room mate tonight. After a quick shower and change of clothes, I walked to Funan IT mall. Jamie and family was already there. A few minutes later, the other runners including those form Singapore showed up. I met DK for the first time - he will be running the 10 km race. Others who were at the "party" were Justin and Jean, Sim, Jason, Kevin and fiancee, Kelvin, Alex and many others whom I did not know.

After the dinner, Kenneth and I went to the Cold Storage supermarket to buy some things for tomorrow's breakfast.

Day 3, Sunday : Race Day
I woke up early because I wanted to watch the marathon start, to get a feel and the spirit of a marathon race. So I left the hotel alone and walked to the Padang (Field). I was not alone as I met Jessica near the traffic light. We walked together to the Padang.

Time was running short as it was almost 6.00 am (marathon start time) . I left Jessica who spotted her father who will be running his 2nd marathon. I rushed to the Marina and I got closer, the noise was deafening. I missed the initial start but there was still plenty of runners to watch.

It was now 6.10 am and I still had to stash my bag at the luggage storage area. Where is this place? I finally found it met Ah Meng and Jessica there too. As Ah Meng had lost his luggage tag, his bag was tied to my bag while Jess stashed her stuff inside Ah Meng' s bag.

That done, we walked back to the Marina for the half marathom race start at 6.30 am.

The first 10 km
I was feeling nervous during the first 1 km because of my bad experiences with fatigue at 12 km last year. I started tentatively but during the first 5 km, it was hard to judge my running pace as I ran on the right lane whereas the distance markers were on the left side of the road.

During the first 5 km, I still felt OK and was running at maybe slightly over 6 min. per km pace (60 min for 10 km). To pass the time away, I tried spot familiar faces among the marathon runners running on the opposite direction.

At the 10 km mark, I had run for 62 minutes. Not a bad pace I thought and I felt the pace was well within my limit. A 2 hrs 10 minute finish may be possible and maybe even 2 hrs 5 minutes if I can run a negative split for the next 11 km (63 minutes).

10 to 15 km
This is where it became tougher as the route was on roads without tree cover. It was blazing hot and at times I could feel a burning sensation on my face and arms from the sun's rays. When I reached a water station, I drank about 200 cc and splash the rest (300 cc) on my head and body. I did the same thing at two more water stations; drink some and splash some. I still managed to maintain my 6 min per km up to 15 km.

15 to 21 km
I crashed out of my running pace somewhere after 15 km mark. Fatigue caught up with me and I had to walk, then run, walk and so on. I was quite blur on what was happening really.

At some point, I could recognise a specific road from last year's run; I was only 2 km from the finish line, I mustered enough energy to start running again. I kept going and managed to sprint the last 100 m to the finish line.

Strangely enough, I didn't feel tired after I finishing the race. My legs were sore as usual but I did not have the familiar post race exhaustion feeling. I think the heat must have induced some sort of heat related fatigue.

Post Race
I had a horrible time trying to collect the bags. I stood in a queue for at least 20 minutes and near to the collection counter, I had to raise my bib number in the air. Even that didn't help much. Ah Meng volunteered to take over the task. For the next 30 minutes, he had to bear extreme discomfort.

Conclusion
After I returned to the hotel, Iwondered what I did wrong during the race. My official results are:
Chip time/Gun time: 2 hrs 16 min 05 sec/2 hrs 18 min. 51 seconds

Placing in half marathon category.
1073rd place with 2948 finishers behind. About 27% of finishers ahead.

Placing (male runners) in half marathon.
888th place with 1969 finishers behind. About 31% of finishers ahead

Among male Malaysian half marathoners finishers
60th place with 138 finishers behind. About 30% of finishers ahead.

As far as position is concerned I didn't do too badly (top 30% of finishers). I guess there were many others who fared worse and probably suffered more than me.

Frankly I am not sure if I will go the Singapore again next year. The hot and humid conditions with late starting times make it almost impossible to finish the race with a good timing or a feeling of satisfaction.

Off to Singapore today and Amazon's Mistake

I am going to Singapore today bus bus from Klang. I only bought a one way to ticket to Singapore. The bus companies in Malaysia are so primitive that I can only get a ticket one way.

I got my books and CDs from Amazon.com yesterday. To my surprise they shipped the same things twice but they are asking for the items back. They will not charge my credit card for this error (good of them!). They asked me to ship the goods back to them using an economical air mail method, the cost which they will recompensate.

For undergoing the incovenience to ship the goods back to them, Amazon has given me an advance USD 5.00 gift certificate on good faith. I will do what they have asked me to do. Yes, I will return the books and CD back even if it's inconvenient for me to repack it and drive to the post office. I will also add in the cost of packing materials, petrol and toll charges to the air mail charges.

I wonder if they will pay for these items?

Who was that woman?

This morning I went to Tower 1 this morning.

At the lift, a woman accosted me and asked if I was from the T** project team.

I replied "Yes, I am from the T** project". More casual verbal exchanges followed.

When she left, I realised I had no idea who she was.

Azwar's Open House and My Left Leg

I did not take any photos at Azwar's open house today. I had left the SD memory card at the photo shop last Monday. When I went there on Wednesday, the shop was closed! The sign pasted on the door said they would be closed for one week for renovation. I was p***d off that they didn't tell me on Monday they were going to be closed for one week. I am definitely going there tomorrow to pick up my photos and camera memory card.

This afternoon was Azwar's open house. it is wonderful that he has graciously decided to hold an open house. Thank you dude!.

When I reached his house at 1.30 pm, almost everyone was there. Unusually for me, I ate more food than normal. I had 2 bowls of Soto minus the chicken, some nasi himpit and slices of watermelons. A few of the runners PM19, PM5 etc asked me about my injured hip.

Status ? This evening, I ran 6 km (34 min) with Albert. It was sore in the beginning but after a while there was a sensation of tightness at the injured area. I felt some pain when running uphill but fortunately the Singapore race route is virtually flat. I think I won't have too much trouble during the race.

We had a good time at Azwar's open house among friends who share a common passion and love for running and leading a healthy lifestyle.

For photos , please visit Ronnie's and Azwar's site.

A final note : There were some attractive slim Malay girls/women who came to the open house. I think they were Azwar's sister' friends. I am so used to seeing "generously" sized Malay girls/women in the LightR ail Train (LRT), at KLCC park and everywhere else, it was a surprise to see a parade of an unfamiliar shape.

Preparing for the Singapore Half Marathon and Vietnam Holiday

Two things have kept me busy over the past one month.

First preparation to run the Singapore Half Marathon. All I can say is I have not done much. Last weekend I ran 2o km at the usual Bukit Aman to Sri Hartamas route. I haven't done much running during the weekday. It was not due to a lack of desire but my right knee has been intemittently sore. Together with the accident on Tuesday, I have more or less accepted that I won't be well prepared for the SIM.

Secondly for my Vietnam holiday, I have been reading Lonely Planet's Vietnam travel guidebook and news about Vietnam on the Net. I also ordered some books about Vietnam from Amazon which I will bring to read while I am there. I hope they will arrive before I leave. I also have my air tickets ready. I have everything ready except for one thing: My leave has yet to be approved but never mind, I will be going regardless.

I have signed up to Flickr. There are more photos of Tasik Shah Alam here.

Drug Crimes

I had an accident on Tuesday night.

When my bus reached Klang on Tuesday night, I walked on a public square area near the post office. It was raining and the area pitch dark. Suddenly I felt my right foot sinking underneath me. I glanced downwards and saw a black square hole. I had stepped into an uncovered drain. I managed to avoid going stepping deeper by balancing on my right leg but as I was still moving forward I stumbled. I lost my balance and fell forwards towards the ground. I instinctively extended my arms and landed on the palms of hands. I was able to prevent my body/face from hitting the ground too hard.

After a few seconds of shock, I got-up. My clothes were dirty. I felt my palms throbbing and it became reddish in colour. I was sure this was a temporary injury that would heal overnight. A more serious injury was to my left hip which had hit the ground. I felt a sharp pain there and had to walk with a slight limp. I may have some minor tears in the my left thigh muscles.

As of this morning, I have a 3 inch long blue coloured bruise on my left thigh. I still have some pain on my left thigh when walking.

Last night, I checked out the place where I fell. All three drains had missing covers. It is likely that the metal covers had been stolen by drug addicts.

I also noticed on the way home, the metal cover on the street lamps were missing. I noticed ALL lamp posts had missing covers . No doubt it was caused by theft, the likely culprits are drug addicts.

The power of drugs over a drug addicted person is extraordinary. Nothing else matter even a basic need for food and water is overcomed by the urge to get high.

I won't be be running for about 3 to 4 days to allow a complete recovery before the Singapore Marathon 10 days from today.

As for the drug addicts, I will be going after you. How will I do this?

The company is implementing Drug and Alcohol (D & A) testing program. I voluntered to be one of the D&A testers last month.

Training Update (Real One)

A busy weekend for a change.

Saturday : I watched Harry Potter "Goblet of Fire". Definitely the best of the Potter movies, much darker in story and appearance with a constant feeling of menace/evil from throghout the film. The movie was very lengthy (2.5 hrs) - I found nyself peering at my watch 2 hrs later in the dark wondering how long I was going to sit in the cinema.

Sunday : 6.00 am , my first 20 km run in six weeks. I was a bit worried that I would not be able to last the distance but my first fears were unfounded. We (me and Yong) ran the first 10 km to Sri Hartamas in 62 minutes. The return run of 10 km to Lake Gardens took Yong 63 minutes. It took me longer as I stopped 500 m short of 20 km because of very sore legs. This was a sign of lost conditioning after not doing long runs for the past six weeks.

After the run, we went to nasi lemak Tanglin to have some drinks. There was a long queue of people lining up to buy nasi lemak. I could not eat any because I have used up my nasi lemak budget for the week - not more than two nasi lemak per week. In any case, I was in a hurry to drive to KL to meet my friend.

I took a shower at my friend's hotel before we went down for breakfast. After breakfast, we left KL heading towards Putrajaya. Traffic was heavy on the KL-Seremban highway. The main purpose of our trip to Putrajaya was to go for a lake cruise. We paid RM 20 each and boarded the wooden boat "Dondang Sayang". The cruise went around several landmarks around the Putrajaya area. The cruise was OK as far as service is concerned but I guessed I would have liked to see more natural trees and plants around the lake. For those who don't know, Putrajaya used to be a palm oil and rubber tree plantation. Other than the few left standing, all other trees and plants were "imported" into the area.

After the cruise, we spend some quality lepak time near the lake. I became a bit hungry, so it was off to lunch at the wonderfully varied food at the food court in the Alamanda shopping centre.

Sometimes, when I see the spot on the car floor where I had placed the 'cat', the memories come flooding back. I think it will be a while before the same feelings dissipate but I don't think I will ever forget the experience.

Training Update

Training Update that is the title but frankly I have nothing to write about my recent running training. Since Tuesday, I've had sore thigh muscles (quadriceps) the result of sprinting between trees during the paintball game. I am just not made to run sprints.

I am currently listening to this CD : Overtime by Lee Ritenour. I have been listening to Rit since 1989. The first album by Rit I bought was Earth Run. Other Jazz artistes whose latest albums I often buy are Fourplay, Urban Knights, Keiko Matsui, Yellow Jackets. David Metheny and Spyro Gyra.

I also listen to New Age music. Sad to say, many of the albums are uninspiring and not worth listening to nowadays.

I am currently reading this book : A History of Thailand

Singapore is only 15 days away.

A Cat's Story : Letting Go

I am not sure how this post will come across but I need to write it.

After leaving the Dr Ee's animal clinic yesterday, I suffered from pangs of regret for the whole day. Firstly I want to mention the clinic was quite basic, unassuming and maybe I should say "rural" like. It was located along a row of old shophouses. I did not see much equipment like an X-ray machine. I was used to seeing the vet clinics in the Klang valley. These urban clinics were attractive looking with large glass doors with animals painted on neon lighted signs. They probably have better diagnostic equipment but not necessarily a better veterinarian.

While driving to Seremban, I was thinking of what if the vet said the cat can be saved by an operation and long term care. What would I do? I trashed out the complication of this scenario in my mind. I came to the conclusion that I was prepared to give the necessary funds to save the cat. I also thought what would I do after the cat had fully recovered? He could have been someone's pet or maybe he was a stray. If he was a pet, how would I find the owner ? If I could not find the owner, I may have to keep him- this was a big maybe. If he was a stray cat , I would release him back to the same area. These were difficult choices to make for which I had no immediate answer.

I did not have to make the above choices, I had agreed to the vet's suggestion to put the cat to sleep. Yesterday I wondered if had I brought the cat all the way to the "better" clinics in the Klang valley, would the outcome be different ? Could the cat have been saved from being put to sleep? I knew from past readings, that when a when an animal makes a circling movements, it is an indication of brain damage. The vet's diagnosis was correct but it is impossible to say for certain if recovery was possible.

This morning I thought through my actions again. Did I do make the right choice by bringing the cat to the "basic" clinic ? Did I make the right decision to put the cat to sleep? The vet made the suggestion based on decades of experience. There is no 100% certainity and there never will be.

I need to let go of these burdening thoughts, my guilty conscience and the "What if" questions for which there are no certain answers. I made the best decision I could under the circumstances at that time.

Rest in peace, cat!

Port Dickson : A Cat 's Story (Very Long Post)

I was in Port Dickson for 3 days for a workshop.

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), I went through a team building session exercise. The exercise was playing paintball. It was a lot of fun. There were four teams with two rounds of competetion. My team won the first round despite the other team's better cover behind a thick trees and bushes. We attacked agressively and they had to defend but it was to no avail. We "shot" all seven of them in just 15 minutes. I managed to "shoot" two opponents.

The 2nd round was the final match between us and the the winner of the the two teams who battled it out. This time it was tougher. Me and another guy was assigned to attack from the right flank. The attack route consisted of jumping across a small stream (3 feet wide) , running from tree to tree and trying to get behind the other team. I managed to get behind a tree and traded shots with the "enemy". Alas, I was hit and had to return to base. After another 15 minutes furious action, our team emerged victorious again.

After finishing the game at 5.15 pm, I headed back to the hotel. I was planning to run at Tanjung Tuan, (2.5 km away from the hotel). Afer a short 5 minutes drive, I reached the Tanjung Tuan forest reserve. My plan was to run up the hill to the light house located 870 m away. I started running at about 5.45 pm on a steep surfaced road. It was hard going but a pleasant run among the trees and plants lined aloong the road. After 5 minutes, I reached the lighthouse. The gate was locked so I walked along the narrow strip of path behind the lighthouse. For my effort, I was rewarded with a magnificent view of the Straits of Malacca. The sea seemed endless and shimmered in blue-green colours from the reflected sunlight. After about 5 minutes I ran down back the base of the hill.

I decided to do more running. This time I ran from the entrance of the Tg Tuan reserve (base of hill) to the main road. The distance I had earlier measure from the car meter is 1.6 km. The route was undulating with four steep hills. After about 10 minutes, I reached the main road and it was time to head back .

Now comes the story of about a cat.

Somehere at the 1 km mark, I noticed something laying flat on the road. It was near the centre lines on my side of the road. It looked liked a piece of wood. As I got closer, I was able recognise it ; it was a dead cat. As I approached; I saw the cat was still alive. It had a dark grey fur with white stripes. The cat lying on its side, possibly severely injured from being run over by a vehicle. I ran past the cat, it had no chance of live anyway.
As I was about 5 m past him, I looked back. I saw the cat raising its front paws, waving them in the air and his lifting head trying desperately to get up. I paused and wondered what to do. Should I continue to run or walk back to help the cat. If I leave it on the road, the cat would surely die from being run over - it would be a terrible thing to happen. I saw the cat twitching, he was trying to get up again. I walked back to help the cat.

The cat had some abrasions on the head, near it's ears. His mouth was bloody and there was also blood inside his mouth. There were no visible wounds on the body. I could not determine if there were any broken bones but there were no obvious signs of a broken limbs. Perhaps his injuries were not so serious. There was still hope perhaps. I looked at his hind legs- they were not moving, possibly injured ? Then I saw a white-greyish tube emerging from the cat's anus. My heart sank as I thought that could have been his intestines. Around and underneath the cat, there were spots of fresh bright red blood. I realised he had suffered internal organ injuries. Perhaps he would not survive long. All this time, he was silent, not making a single meow or sound.

But I should at least try to give him a fighting chance to live. I decided to move him to the side of the road on the grass. I crouched down and tried to figure out the best way to lift him. As I moved my left hand towards his shoulder (uninjured) and my right to support his body, I looked at his eyes of green colour. There was a look of complete trust in his eyes. As gently as possible I lifted him moving him barely above ground to the side of the road. He lay flat on the ground and tried to get up again unsucessfully. I lingered over him for a while to observe. A bit later, he seemed to have become unconcious but breathing.

I walked back to the car some 400 m away. It was now past 6.45 pm. I drove back to the hotel hoping the cat would recover overnight. I knew his chances was very slim indeed.

Today (Wednesday) was the last day. Just before the mid morning tea break at 10.00 am, a light rain started to fall. I knew the cat would become wet and if he had survived the night, he would suffer from the wet and cold conditions. I decided to drive to check him. I drove slowly to spot him. Was it my imagination that I saw him sitting up and licking his face? He had recovered. As got closer, I had imagined it what I saw. I noticed he was sitting on a his front legs with back legs folded behind, head slumped down. Was he dead? The rain was falling heavily now.

I made three passes and then parked my car. I walked towards him for a closer look. Somehow he had managed to move a bit further from the road. He was quite weak and did not respond when I made some "cat noises". His fur was quite dirty and wet but he was still alive. Again I pondered what to do. First I had to protect him against the rain. For this purpose, I had a plastic bag which I used to cover him. Secondly I decided I had done enough and made up my mind to leave him to his fate. I have done all I could. I drove back to the hotel to attend the rest of the workshop.

The workshop ended at 12.00 pm. I had lunch and left the hotel at 12.30 pm. The heavy rain had abated and there was a light drizzle. I thought I would check the cat for one last time. So I drove again to the spot where I saw him before. This time it was easy to spot the plastic bag. I parked the car and walked towards the plastic bag.

When I was 10 m away, I only saw the plastic bag. Where was the cat ? Had he recovered and moved away? For a a while I hoped this was the case but when I reached the plastic bag, I removed it and saw he was underneath. He lay fully curled up - he looked cold. I looked for signs of life. I saw his body was still moving - he was still breathing weakly. He was still alive but I was eager to return to KL . Should I leave him here to die?

I thought I have done enough for him under the circumstances.

When I think about it now, it was the first few moments when I first saw him laying on the road struggling to get up that prompted me to decide; to do the right thing for this cat. I decided to look for a veterinarian. I must make a final attempt to save him. Leaving him behind would means a slow and suffering death from starvation over several days. Or maybe he would try to cross the road in his weakened condition become immobilised on the road.

I covered the cat with the plastic bag and drove to Port Dickson. It was now almost 1.30 pm and I w0ndered how to go about finding a vet. in an unfamiliar town. My first stop was to find the ostrich farm which had been advertised on a signboard that I noticed on Monday. Surely they would have a vet but when I asked an employee, she said they did not have a vet. What now? I considered going to the Port Dickson hospital to ask but had a better idea to call Telekom Directory Assistance (no. 103) and ask for the tel. number for a vet. in Port Dickson. I found out there was no vet. in Port Dickson with the nearest vet. in Seremban town, 40 km away. I called the vet in Seremban and told him I was going to bring in an injured cat. I mentioned I wanted to put a cat down to sleep but asked him to check the cat first.

I drove 10 km back to the cat, lifted him carefully and placed him on the floor it front of the back seat. For a short while, he moved around in fear trying to escape but he was quite weak and finally settled down quietly on the floor. While I was driving to Seremban, initially I heard shuffling sounds but later there were no longer any sounds. He had settled down.

At 2.30 pm I reached Ee's Animal Clinic. I entered the clinic and informed a woman that I was the caller who had called in earlier about an in injured cat. A few minutes later, Dr Ee, a short robust Chinese man in hist 50's walked in. His son also a vet asked me to bring the cat into the clinic. He gave me a cage for this purpose. I walked back to the car, opened the door and saw the cat had woken up. I carried him carefully placed him into the cage and returned to the clinic.

After a short wait, I carried the cage with Dr Ee walking beside me towards a room. There was a large wooden table covered with newspapers. I briefly told him how I found the cat. Dr Ee lifted the cat by the the neck onto the table. We observed the cat movements as he tried to walk/move - it was always towards the right hand side (looking from the rear). Dr. Ee said the cat was "circling" or making movements in a specific direction - an indication of a brain damaged he said. He also pointed out to the right paw which he said was "not effective".

He saggested perhaps it was best if he put the cat down and after a pause, I told him to go ahead. He asked me I wanted to bury the cat afterwards but I told him it was not my cat and that I had found him on the road. He said he will take of it. He will put the cat to one side until he had time euthanised him. As I left the room, Der Ee said putting the cat to sleep was the best thing to do to relieve the cat from more suffering.

I paid RM 50 at the reception and left the clinic. It was now 2.45 pm and it was time for me to go home. The cat was going home too but he returning home for good.

I do not know if he was someone's pet who had loved him (he was clean and well fed) or a just a stray cat. Hopefully during his short life, he had been loved and cared for by somebody. I hoped during the last day of his life, he knew someone did care for him and tried his best to save and comfort him.

Vietnam Embassy :Conversation with a Beaurecrat

I've booked my flights to Vietnam. I called the Vietnam embassy to ask about the tourist visa. The conversation between me and the embassy beaurecrat (Be) goes like this:

Me : Hello, I want to apply for a tourist visa.
Be : (Grunting noises)
Me : I want to apply for a tourist visa.
Be : photo!
Me : How many ?
Be : 1 photo and passport!
and then he puts down the phone before I can ask more questions.

I called again as I did wanted to ask some more questions about the types of visa and fees.
Me : Hello, it's me again. How long does it take to get a visa?
Be : (grunt) and (pause) and then he puts down the phone.

3rd Tel. call
Me : Hello
Be : (breathing noise) (pause) Puts down the phone.

Maybe they don't want tourists going there, spending money and contributing to the local tourism industry.

BTW, if you called the Myanmar embassy as I did in 1999, more or less the same thing happens.

Maybe I should go somewhere else.

Preparation for the Vietnam Holiday

Now that it is confirmed I will be going to Singapore, there are still other things I have to prepare for the trip to Vietnam. So far, I've done three of them:-
  • Bought a new digital camera, Casio Exilim EX-Z750 (a review here) 1 week ago. The amazing thing about this 7 Megapiexel camera is the functions available in such a small body. There are even a full range of manual functions available.
  • Practice using the camera. The photos taken at Tasik Perdana, Shah Alam were taken with this camera.
  • Bought a camera tripod from a shop in Sungai Wang Plaza.

I hope to take good photos while I am in Vietnam. My interest in photography started when I did a photography subject in high school at Australia. The subject was taught part of the Physics course. I learn the various technical functions of a camera, things like aperture size, shutter speed, focal length etc. We even learnt and developed photos in a dark room.

I should write something about yesterday's run. It was good day to run yesterday after a heavy afternoon rain. For the first few laps at KLCC, I ran with Jamie. Then we saw ChinPg at the 0 metern line. Although a frequent visitor to PM1's chat box, we have never met him in person. He joined us as well and one round later, Newton also showed up. After he joined, on my 4th lap it started to drizzle. Soon the rainfall became heavier and I had to seek shelter under a tree. I waited until the rain eased, had a sort of unsatisfied feeling and rejoined the trio as they ran past me. After one more lap, the rainfall became heavier and I decided to abandon my run altogether.

I have now run for three consecutive days (6 km, 12 km and 6.5 km = 25.5 km). I am supposed to take a day off today but I am tempted to run again today.

Singapore Go!

I must post this news tonight.

I received the confirmation e-mail of my registration to the Singapore Marathon. The e-mail was sent from the organiser at 7.34 pm this evening. I could not check my entry online as I had used my passport number instead of my I.C. number.

After my e-mail to the organiser this morning, they were on the job tracing my entry. On the same day, they gave a reply. A fantastic and a timely respond indeed from them. It showed how serious and committed they are to make the Singapore Marathon the premier road race event in Asia.

Thanks to Kevin and the unknown persons who had traced my race entry.

Now that I know I will be going to Singapore, I can book my bus ticket to Singapore and also prepare for my long holiday.

Singapore or Not ?

I had a shock last night !

I ran 6 km in the evening with Kong at a leisurely pace. He reminded me to check my registration for the Singapore marathon. I had registed on line way back in July 2005. There was a clause in the credit card transaction that said the order (reg. fee) was to confirmed by the organiser (Singapore Sports Council). In fact to date, I still have not received an e-mail from the organiser to confirm my registration.

When I reached home, I went to Singapore Marathon site to check my registration online. I typed in my IC number and race category (1/2 marathon), waited and then it came out "No record found".

What happened to my registration which has already been paid in August ?

I shoot off an e-mail to the organiser 10 minutes later. This morning I called the organiser. I sent another e-mail giving more details.

I certainly hope there is no problem with my race registration. Now I have to wait for a response from the organiser.

Today's Run & Holiday Update

Many people are back at work today after the 4 day Hari Raya break. Not me - I am still on leave :-)

This morning I had a enjoyable run around the Tasik Perdana, Shah Alam. The last time I ran at a this lake was in February with Kenneth who was my long run kaki partner at that time. Today I ran alone and sometimes I do prefer and want to run alone.

I started running at about 7.05 am and despite starting later than the usual time, the weather was really good - cool temperature and cloudy skies. There were a few walkers but I ran pass all of them on my first loop around the lake. I completed the first lap of 4 km in 22 minutes. It was wonderful to run alone while enjyoyig the relative solutide and views of the lake and flowers.

I ran my second lap at a slower pace (25 minutes). There were 2 groups of exercisers around; A Qigong group and a dance group consisting of mainly women. Nothing to see though :-(.

After the run, I stood on a bridge in the middle of the lake. A slight breeze helped to cool me down and evaporate the sweat from my body.

Update on my holiday plan: Checked my Malaysian Airlines Enrich points this morning. I have accumulated 77,000 points which is enough for a Zone 6 travel - up to 7200 miles. For my planned destinations (India or Vietnam), I need to use only 35,000 or 25,000 points. In fact, 22,000 points will expire before the end of the year. So I really have to go away!.

Eat and More Eating

I ate a lot yesterday. Lots of food and at many times plus I finished off a slice of carrot cake and Chocolate Banana cake.

I did not run yesterday. All that extra food and no exercise - not a good combination. I will run this evening and on this weekend, I will start doing my long runs.

I've finished reading Lonely Planet's Vietnam travel guidebook. I dropped by Kino bookshop on Monday to check out the LP's India guidebook. It was selling for RM 128!. On Amazon, it was much cheaper at RM 80 excluding the shipping charges. If I am going to India, I will be carrying my old India guidebook (6 years old). It is too expensive to get the new edition

So far, Vietnam looks very inviting- there are still many interesting places to visit.

Holiday Plans for 2005

Happy Deepavali and Happy Hari Raya to everyone.

There are two more events I am looking forward to before year 2005 ends. One is the Singapore Marathon (I am running the half). The second is my postponed holiday. I had initially planned to take a long holiday in May but had to postpone it to December 2005. December is a bad time to travel as many flights are fully booked but I will take a 2 weeks++ holiday in December. The only problem is I haven't decided where to go yet. A few places I am considering are:-

India : I have been to India 3 times. In fact, my first holiday overseas was to India when I was 25 years old. The best things about India is the diversity of cultures, people and sceneries. The worst thing is the hassles from many things such as touts, beggars etc. The northern part of India is quite cold in December.

Vietnam : I've been to Vietnam 3 times to many places from the South, Central and Northern Vietnam. Beautiful sceneries and there are still many unexplored places to visit.

China: I've been to China once. A huge and diverse country but the cities are too crowded and polluted. I found the people to be quite loud and rude.

Thailand: I've been there so many times and just about everywhere. One of the easiest country to travel in with very good long distance buses.

I will have to decide on my holiday destination during the Hari Raya holiday.

But the place I really want to go is so far away : Central America. The reason? I met an American guy in China a few years ago and he told me about the Mayan & Inca temples in Central America.

Five More Days

Thanks to everyone who had wished me Selamat Hari Raya.

Last week I actually ran quite often; 5 km on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Yesterday I only ran 2 km. Four days in one week, a record for me during the fasting month.

After checking this website, it is likely that Hari Raya will be on Friday. Another five days of fasting to go. I really miss doing the long runs. The shorter runs are just not satisfying for me. It's only after 40 minutes of continuous running (7 km +) that the "feel good" effects start to kick in. I have made plans to 3 long runs (12 km and 2 x 20 km) in November.

Come Hari Raya - I must discipline myself not to eat too much. I have already lost 2.5 kg over the past 25 days. I don't want to put it back in one month before the Singapore marathon.

Running on Empty

Yesterday I ran on the treadmill for the 2nd day in a row.

Usually I set the speed at 10.0 km/hr and run at comfortable pace. Yesterday I was curious on my fitnes level after fasting nearly one month , so I set a faster pace at 10.5 km/hr.

I was running OK for the first 3 km. The next 1 km was harder as the treadmill was automatically inclined up by 1 degree.

Then the last 1 km became much harder. I had to concentrate to keep going. The words "Focus, Focus..." ala what Mr Miyagi said to Daniel san in the Karate Kid movie appeared in my mind. I focused and kept going...I felt a little bit light headed.

At the end of 5 km, I felt empty inside, as though all energy have been drained out of my body. Fortunately after 5 minutes, I recovered.

Shoe Review : ASICS GT-2100

On Thursday, I finally exchanged the wrongly sized ASICS GT-2100 at the shop. On Saturday evening, I ran on the 400 m track at the Klang stadium wearing the coveted shoes. Here is my review of the shoe. For the record, I am 1.68 m (5 feet 6 incches) tall, 56 kg and a have slightly flat arches.

Fashion : Fashion is not very important for me but neverthless the shoes I bought was different from the usual dull and colourless ASICS shoes (blue and white). There is now a orange strip around the ankle slot. Adds a bit of colour and dash to the shoes. Quite a nice touch, I think.

Comfort and Ride: This shoes has the perfect balance of cushioning and stiffness. It is slighty harder than the ASICS Kayano XI but still gives a soft cushioned ride. The shoes also felt extremely stable when I ran on the track. The shoe did feel noticeably heavy but it is defintely lighter than Kayano. Transition from heel to forefoot appears to be smoother than the previous model, the 2090.

The only shortcomings are first : the shoe that I have (2E) is a bit wider than my foot. Second is the price : RM 369 per pair.

Conclusion : A shoe that I will enjoy running in but it remains to be seen the larger width will become an issue.

ASTRO and Other Updates

After I sent an e-mail to Measat , the provider of ASTRO services, someone actually bothered to call me the next day enquiring about my complaints. She recorded the complaint again and said they will be able to send a technician to check the problem. The only problem is the visit will cost RM 50 excluding any spare parts costs. I didn't think it was a problem with the decoder box or the satelillite dish or cables since the customer service rep. let on "they have increase signal strength" due to the complaint I made one week before. From the beginning , it was problem with the signal strength (output) from the ASTRO satellite. To cut it short, since Thursday last week, the ASTRO programs are now clear.

I haven't done much running over the past one week. Ran 5 km on Friday. 4 km on Sunday and just walked 3 km on Sunday. Quite pathetic really.

ASTRO Sucks

For those who don't know what is ASTRO, it is a satellite TV company providing TV programs within Malaysia. I sent an e-mail to them tonight. The message is shown below:-

What's wrong with you guys?

I have been trying to contact customer service (03-95434188) over the past 10 minutes. In response, what I get is a voice message asking me to press '7' for techincal problems. When I press 7, I get an irrelevant voice message about the Astroguide, then the message asking me to press "9" to return to the main menu. I press 7 again and voila, the same thing repeats itself. I cannot get through to anyone.

The problem at hand is over the past 2 weeks, my ASTRO service has been very poor. Last week, no service was available at nighttime. Daytime service was available. Four days ago, the service was back to normal i.e. available 24 hrs. Tonight, there is no service at all. (Satellite signals; BER = 2, AGC = 60).

I request your immediate attention and service towards the above. If you fail to reply within 2 working days, I will take steps to terminate my ASTRO subscription,

I think it’s for me to say in plain English”Your customer service sucks!”

After the e-mail was sent, I received this automated reply on the website.
Should you need immediate response, we encourage you to contact our Customer Service directly.

Immediate ? Nothing could be stated further away than the truth!

2nd Training Week

I have progressed with the 2nd week of training. On Friday, for the first time, I ran more than 5 km. As usual the was hardly anyone in the gym. I managed to run 6.5 km on the treadmil. My lips were dry after the run a sign of slight dehydration. Other than this, I had no problem running 6.5 km.

The 2nd week plan is to run 6.5 km per session on alternate days but I will miss next Tuesday's session as I will be going oustation tomorrow.

Today for the first time, I had a satisfying run outdoor. Last weekend, I only managed to run 2 km at the stadium before crashing out. Today I did much better; 8 x 400 m = 3.2 km without any problems.

First Week Training Report

After one week after fasting, my training is going as scheduled. So far :

Wed (1st day) : Did not run
Thur(2nd day): 5 km
Frid(3rd day) : Rest
Sat (4th day) : 5 km
Sun(5th day) : 3 km only down & out :-(
Mon(6th day) : 5 km
Tues(7th day) : Rest
Wed(8th day) : 5 km

So far I haven't had too much difficulty running 5 km on the treadmill. For the 2nd week, starting tomorrow, I plan to increase the distance to 6.5 km@4 days and 8 km@1 day with 2 days rest. I have to run for a longer time (35 to 40 minutes) which also means I will only reach the KLCC LRT station after 5.00 pm. I will probably end up having to walk to the monorail station :-(

That was the good news.

The bad news; After one week of fasting and 23 km of running, I still have the spare tyre around my abdomen. Next step, liposuction ?

Stupid Putra LRT Managers !

I ran today on the treadmill at the gym. The company has shorter hrs during the fasting month allowing me to reach the gym at about 4.15 pm. Thank you, company

It was my third run during the fasting month. Did an easy 5 km distance at 10 km/hr pace. I thought of doing 6 km (another 5 minutes) but it was almost 5 pm. I wanted to leave and avoid the jam at the KLCC LRT station,

I reached the station at 5.15 pm. There was already a crowd, 4 to 5 persons deep crowded it in front of the LRT train doors.

The first train arrives. I couldn't get in - too many people.

Four minutes later, the 2nd train arrives. Still cannot get in.

Another four minutes, 3rd train arrives. Still cannot get in. What the f*&%!

Two guys from the Putra LTR station arrives. They try to control the crowd, asking people to step away from the door to let the incoming passengers out.

After missing the 4th train. I gave up. Walked to the monorail station (800 m away). There were very few passengers. Even managed to get a seat. Rode the train until KL Sentral and then boarded the Putra LRT to Central Market. No problems this time.

Why can't the LRT trains come more often, say every 2 or 3 minutes? When the LRT service started operation 7 years ago, it was running one train every 3 minutes. Now it's 4 minutes apart during peak hours. It makes no sense whatsoever unless.........

The Putra LRT managers are idiots!

Justin's Wedding Dinner

I attended Justin@PM19 wedding dinner was last night.

You can read various reports about wedding dinner at this site and site . Many of his runner friends attended the wedding. During an interlude, there was a sort of slide show showing Justin & Jeanne (his wife) photos from infancy to the present. It also showed some photos of him with his runner friends. The latter photos brought up a cheer from us runners.

It was a smoothly organised event. The bride and groom looked respelendent. Nice looking girls at the registration table too.

Best wishes to Justin & Jeanne. May both of you live a fruitful and contented lives together.

Tomorrow I have to go see the dentist urgently. I've had a tooth ache since Thursday last week. The cure will be a either a drill or a plier. Ouch !

Insoles

I bought an insole today. What's an insole ? You don't know ? Here the link to the insole site.

I found out about the insole from Yong last Sunday. Julian wears one but he got his from Foot Solutions. The cost was RM 300 , I think. Mine is cheaper and custom fiitted. The sales guy used an industrial hot air dryer to soften the insoles before I wore them. They are made from from shape memory plastic Mine costs RM 169.
I had fitted to Brooks Axiom. I liked this shoe a lot but there is enough cushion for me to use for long runs. Now with the insoles, they may be suitable for a long run but they are also heavier.

While fitting the insoles I asked the sales guy the market for the insoles. He said their current market was golfers. Golfers ? I can't imangine any golfer having problems with their foot walking around a grass covered golf course for 3 to 4 hrs. Most golfers I know drive a buggy to play golf. Is golf a high impact sport or are golfers the only people who can afforf to pay for a RM 150 insoles, in addition to their RM 500 shoes.

The First Run

Today is the 2nd day of the fasting. I did my first training run on the treadmill at the Sweat Club.

I set the treadmill at 10 km/hr and started to run. There was only 3 other people in the gym; thety were all the iron jocks. These are the guys who like to lift weight , pose in front of the mirror and maybe say to themselves. "I want to be huge". :P

As there was not much for me to see , I got bored after 20 minutes. I was running well and did not feel tired at all. I stopped when the LED readout showed 5 km. I think I could have have easily run 8 km at my normal pace (11.5 km/hr). But I have to followed my training program; 5 km per day for the first week. Next week, I am going to ramp up the distance to 6.5 km.

Fasting Month Training

Today is the first day of Ramadhan.

Every year is the same for me, I make training plans and schedules, I end up not following them and one month later at the end of Ramadhan, I struggle to increase my fitness.

In the past, my training plans consisted of running 4 to 5 km on alternate days. All done outdoors in the heat and humidity of KL. Unsuccesfully most of the time I should add.

This year I am going to do something different. I will run indoor in the gym on the treadmill. Maybe the airconditioning will make it less tiring.

For the first week, I will try to run 5 km at 10 km/hr speed for 30 mimutes on alternate days (3 days/week).

If the first week goes well, during the second week , increase mileage to 6.5 km at 10 km/hr. Also run four times a week.

For 2nd and 3rd week, same program as 2nd week but do at least one 8 to 10 km run per week.

20 km long runs ? I haven't decided to do them or not. The only time available is at night or very early in the morning like 3.00 am. Running at 3.00 am sounds quite crazy to me.

This Weekend I was Not Lazy

Unlike last weekend, I did a lot of running this weekend but before I start writing about it, there is another I would like to write.

On Friday, I was at the consultant office at Jln Tun Razak the whole day. It rained very heavily at 5.00 pm and I had to wait until 5.20 pm before I could leave. Traffic was horrible and there was no way I could get a taxi so I decided to walk to Bukit Bintang. It took 30 minutes for me to reach Bukit Bintang about 3.2 km away I guess.

I wanted to take the monorail to KL Sentral but before that I wandered aimlessly around the shopping complexes. I took the monorail at 7.30 am to KL Sentral. The route passes by Brickfields, an area well known for its Indian shops. From the elevated rail, I noticed many massage places run by the blind, something else which Brickfields is well known for. Perhaps some of the places may be suitable for sports related massages

Yesterday night I did a google search using "massage malaysia". The 2nd entry on the wesbite Mentioned was a place I thought a good place to get a massage; Sentral Massage. One of the comments on the website about this place is:
Even on a Thu afternoon, the place is filled with cruising men of all races, ages and sizes. Steam room is action packed, but facilities have dim lighting. And the entrance fee is only R$15. Well worth a visit!"

It seems some of these massage places are pick-up joints for gay men. Something I have to bear in mind when selecting a suitable place.

Enough of that. Back to running.

On Saturday. I did an easy 5 km run in Klang.

Sunday moning was the main event. I ran with Yong to Sri Hartamas. The first 10 km was quite hard. It was more humid than usual and mentally I found it hard to focus.

One hr 2 minutes later I was relieved to reach the Sri Hartamas petrol station. We bought 3 cans of gatorade; 3 different flavour sharing one can. As an indication how hard the first 10 km was, I also bought and ate a small chocolate bar.

The return run to Lake Gardens (Tamam Tasik Perdana) was easier. I was able to get into the run mentally and maintained a consistent pace. Yong had sore legs and mine became sore at the Bukit Tunku area (17 km). Nevertheless we kept going until 400 m from the traffic lights at at the turn to the Lake Gardens. We had run a for 1 hr 57 minutes, 2 hrs 01 minutes if we had not stopped short.

There were a few things going on at Bukit Aman; Nike Free shoes promo, some company selling bioelectic gadget (Rakuwa) and Pacesetter Singapore Marathon trip forms.

On Sunday evening, I ran again with the Klang Pacer guys; Kong, Albert and Jimmy. We did 6 km in 36 minutes. My legs were OK and not sore even after the morning's 20 km run.

Total distance ran over the weeekend = 5 + 20 + 6 = 31 km.

Fasting month is coming up in 2 or 3 days time. For this year's fasting month training, I will do most of my run indoor on a treadmill. It's less tiring than running outdoor. I plan to run 5 to 6 km a day. For longer run, I am considering running at night after 9.30 pm. I am not sure how this will work out or even where I am supposed to run. Just have to see how it goes.

Desperate Runners and Meeting on Old Friend

Yesterday, I forgot to bring my T-shirt and shorts to the office. At 6.00 pm, from my office on the 24th floor, I could only longingly look at KLCC park. Even from the 24 th floor, I could see who was running at KLCC park from the running styles. Jamie, Ronnie, Yong, Adam, Yong and Justin were running. I wanted to run too but alas my memory failed me yesterday.

A few years ago, the same thing happened when I forgot to bring my running gear. It was a beautiful and sunnny day and I had to run. Shoes was not a problem as I wore my running shoes to the office. Out of desperation, I went to the Royal Sporting House at KLCC and bought a T-shirt and shorts just so I could run that evening.

Today I made sure I brought along my T-shirt and shorts. At 6.00 pm , I reached the usual spot at the zero meter mark. I saw Yong stretching but today he was dressed differently. He wore a black coloured T-shirt. I asked him why he was not wearing his usual round collar T-shirt. He said he forgot to bring it and had to wear his office T-shirt to run. Another desperate runner!.

Anway, it was a good day to run with the cooler temperature due to the afternoon rain. We ran slowly at 7 min 55 seconds pace for 5 laps (6.5 km). Runing in the opposite direction was Newton and Kenneth. The fast bald chinese man was there too.

At the last lap, I saw an old friend who had been missing from KLCC park over the past one and half years. Back in 1999, there were four regular runners at KLCC; me, Yong, Salleh and the MIA friend. Today was his 2nd run after stopping from running for 1-1/2 years. Both Yong and I were happy to see him running again at KLCC park. We hoped to see him more often.

Ramadhan is coming up next week. It looks Azwar has a training plan during the fasting month. I have been formulating a training plan as well although my previous plans over the past 4 years have never been very succesful.

Weekend - Lazy

I was too lazy over the weekend.

I watched two movies over the weekend ; Flightplan and The Myth on Saturday. Afterwards, I thought about going to Shah Alam to pick up the bib for the 10km Shah Alam run. But I decided not to go because I have been having knee problem again this week. I also didn't run on Saturday evening either.

I thought to myself maybe I would do a 20 km run the next morning. Wishful thinking! I woke up at 6.00 am and for a moment , thought of going to Shah Alam lake to run 20 km. But I didn't go there as well.

This week has not been a good week for running. I only ran once on Thursday. I have to run more next week.

Recovery Run on Thursday

After 3 days rest to recover rom the PJ half marathon, my left hamstring muscle was finally OK on Thursday morning.

In the evening, I went to KLCC park on a cloudy and colder evening than normal due to an early afternoon rain. I ran with Yong and Gan for four laps at a anormally faster pace of 7 min. 10 secs. I was glad to see that I had no hamstring problems but my left knee was sore. After finishing 4 laps, I chatted with Gan and Kenneth. I stretched and a few minutes later joined Gan and Lisar for a walking session. They walked like professional race walkers and I could hardly keep up. I trailed 2 m behind them and called it a day after 2 laps.

This Sunday is the Shah Alam 10 km race. I still haven't decided whether to run this race or not.

18 Sept 2005 - PJ Half Marathon Race

Today's PJ Half Marathon was an incredibly hard race for me. After running 2 hrs 04 minutes during last Sunday's Putrajaya half marathon on a hilly route, I thought the PJ race would be easy. Maybe I could even dip below well below 2 hrs and get a shot at a medal. The only potential problem was my left hamstring muscle which has been sore over the past 3 days. Hopefully the race will sort this problem one way or the other.

During last year's race, I suffered from stitches and had to walk and run after 12 km. A horrible experience that I wanted to avoid but this year. This year I registered for the junior veteran's instead of the open category. It has less medals, 100 instead of 200. There were fewer runners in this category but most are hard core and well trained runners suited to run 21 km. It was a chance I took with a medal prospect in mind.

(0-6 km) The race started on time at 6.30 am. I ran quite hard in the beginning despite the hilly section to the Federal Highway. Past the cable bridge, at the 6 k mark, I checked my progress; 34 min 11 seconds or a pace of 5 min 37 seconds per km. Fast but I was still feeling OK.

(6-8 km) The next hilly section was a 200 m run on a flyover. I struggled up the steep section, in a flash of memory I recalled how I struggled hard over the same section last year. I found it easier this year. I took an isontonic and water at the 8 km drink station. I forgot to check my time at this point. Overtook Jason.

(8-12 km) It started to rain, first a light drizzle, followed by a downpour. I began to get a little tired. Jason overtook me. Later Yong as well. Stiches appear at the 10 km mark but after walking, it dissapeared. This year there is a new challenge for the runners; a newly built flyover which was not there last year. I walked up the flyover and then ran down. At 12 km, checked my time ; 1 hr 08 28 seconds, my pace has slowed to 6 min 51 seconds /km. Falling behind badly behind my target pace of 5 min 30 sec/km. I came across Sim who appeared to be struggling too. After a while he ran ahead.

(12-14 km) The rain stopped somewhere along this stretch. Walked again to the 14 km mark and collected a ribbon. Didn't bother to time my progress.

(14 -18 km) Met up with Sim again. He was walking and so was I. Why not walk together? Found out he had to walk for an unfortunate reason. Read his blog to find out. Left hamstring muscle tight but both legs are not in good shape either. They felt stiff and I think I must ran like a robot. After a while, I managed to run short distances interspersed with walking.

At the last water station (18 km), Azwar was standing and taking photos. I can't be walking while he was taking photo - it will end up on his website, so I ran for a while and after 200 m past him, I walked.

(18-21 km) After, the 18 km mark, I mostly walked for another 2 km. I checked my time at at the 20 km markl well past 2hrs. I only started to run the last 1 km in the faint hope of getting a medal. Overtook 2 or 3 junior men's runners along the way to the stadium.

Over the last 300 m , I managed to run sprinter like on my battered legs. If there was still a medal chance, there was no way I was going to let anyone overtake me over the last 300 m. I hung around an official at the finishing line. "Medal sudah habis " (Medals already finished). That said it all for my race.

My time : 2 hrs 14 min 09 seconds, 16 minutes slower than last year.

Meet up with Ronnie and told him my race time. After the race, both of my hamstrings tightened up and became painful. After congratulating Kenneth for running a PR (1 hr 57 minutes), I hobbled off to get some isotonic drinks (1oo Plus). To add insult to injury, there were no Milo drinks left. They too were "sudah habis" (All finished)".

I had a chat with Jess at the car park about the race. Met Mr Tan again whom I met last week at the Putrajaya marathon.

Next year I have to try again for a medal. We runners never give up!

For results , please visit Ronnie's site.

Huh ? 10 km for the PJ Half Marathon ?

Today I received the PJ half marathon receipt but I was shocked to see I have been registered for the 10 km. I think I did register for the 21 km and I hoped I ticked the right box. How did this happen ?

I have no intention of running the 10 km race as I enjoy running the 21 km distance. Tomorrow I have to call the STAR newspaper. I hope I can still register for the 21 km race.

Anyone who wants to swap the 21 km for 10 km, let me know by posting on my blog site.

Looking towards December

This evening I had a pleasant recovery jog at KLCC park. First with Gan (2 laps) and then with Jamie and Kenneth (3 laps). We talked about the upcoming PJ half marathon and the Singapore Marathon in December

I have registered for 3 races this September. The first was yesterday - the Putrajaya half marathon. I was very satisfied with my time - 2 hrs 04 min 32 seconds. The main reason for being satisfied is my half marathon times for this year has been quite bad - around 2 hrs 15 to 20 minutes for three races. These are the same times I was runing way back in year 2000 when I ran my first my half marathon in Penang. So I was quite pleased at my time at the Putrajaya race.

My mind is not in the next two races; the PJ half marathon this Sunday and Shah Alam 10km the following Sunday. It seems I am always drifting towards the Singapore race in December 2005. Last year's race was a disaster of sorts as I really suffered in the 21 km race. First my left foot became swollen and painful at the 10 km mark. Secondly my right knee started to hurt soon afterwards. It was downhill from then as I alternated between walking and running over the last 11 km. I finished the race in 2hrs 16 minutes, my slowest time in 4 years.

That is why now in September I am looking towards December when I would again line up on a warm and humid morning in Singapore to run the race again. To erase the memory of last year's race and to redeem myself, I must train to make sure the outcome this race will be almost certain and have positive result. But in running, there is always an element of uncertainity on race day; " Will today be my day ?"

11 September 2005 - Putrajaya Half Marathon

This is the first ever half marathon race organised in Putrajaya. It is rare that road races organised in Malaysia get things right for runners but this is one that was done right. From the five drink stations supplied with water and isotonic drink, power gel (unexpected and welcomed) and post race food (apple, bun, 250 ml packet drink and boiled egg, good traffic control and race atmosphere. The only 2 flaws in the race organisation were the slightlty delayed start (+5 min) and lack of rubbish bins at the start/finish area.

Ater having done a survey, the route was very familiar to me at least for the first 12 km and then last 4 km. I cautioned Kevin Chow at the starting line about the hilly route.

The starting line was at the Putra bridge. I estimated there was about 1000 runners for the 21 km distance. As the clock went past 7.00 am, the runners became a bit edgy and restless. At about 7.05 am, the race started with a shot from the starter gun. Ahead for 3 km, lay completely flat 3 km road. Eveyone got into their running strides quickly with minimal jostling because of the 3 lane road. Farther away (4 km) lay the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on top of a hill. We were headed there.

For the first 4 km I ran conservatively trying to conserve strength for the many hilly sections to come. After the first bridge at the 4 km distance, I saw Justin, Jamie and Tey on the opposite road. I picked up a blue ribbon at the U-turn (5 km) to the opposite road. Then a 400 m run uphill towards the very steep run to PICC. I dreaded this section but it did not pose too much problem and I even managed to overtake several struggling runners.

Past the PICC,it was a downhill coast back to a bridge with another uphill section. After another 3 km distance, another bridge to run on. After this bridge came the hardest part, a series of undulating sections (four I think) each about 200 to 400 m long. Somehow I made it through all the uphill sections without too much difficulty. My long runs at the Bukit Aman to Sri Hartamas route (hilly) has certainly paid off.

After the 14 km? distance, I ran with a guy whom I knew by name up to that moment; Bacin a frequent visitor to Azwar's. site. After a some time I could not keep up and I had to run on my own. Draco showed up and after a while he ran past me too. The 16 km mark was not any easier as this section was a 180 degree turn uphill to the main road. I came across Jamie walking, I was tired too and walked for a while with him. Eventually we started to run again but I was eager to try for a sub 2 hr time and ran ahead.

Before reaching the giant roundabout near Putra park, another obstacle; a steep 1 km run uphill to get there. My legs were quite stiff and it was hard to move them. I slowed down to a shuffle with Mr Tan (SIRIM guy) who was shuffling too wearing slippers.

I was relieved when I reached the roundabout. It was only 3 km away from the finish line. The stiffness in my legs dissapeared and I was able to run normally. Now was my push to the finish and I increased my pace to overtake a few tired runners. A quick stop at the 20 km water station and then a left turn to the roundabout. Soon I came to the last 100 m stretch on the Putra bridge and gathered enough reserves to run to the finish line.

Here are my split times:-
4 km ==> 22 min. 38 seconds (5 min. 40 sec/km)
6 km==> 33 min. 19 seconds (5 min. 33 sec/km)
8 km==> 44 min. 32 seconds (5 min. 34 sec/km)
10 km=> 55 min. 54 seconds (5 min. 35 sec/km)
13 km=> 1 hr, 13 min. 53 sec.(5 min. 41 sec/km)
21 km=>2 hr, 04 min. 30 sec (5 min, 44 sec/km)

For some more results, see Ronnie's site.

Back from Melaka

I returned from Melaka. Sad to say, I did not run at all in Melaka despite bringing my shoes, T-shirt and shorts. The main reason was my right knee has been acting up again. The second reason is there are not many spots to run in town itself. The streets are narrow and are barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass through. Having said that, there is a nice loop around Bukit Cina where there are thousands of chinese graveyards, some said to be 600 years old. Kind of spooky to run there at 6.00 am in the dark. I'll skip that, thank you.

The second and better place to run is along Klebang beach just 10 km away from town. I guess the route would be about 3 km long one way. You can't really run on the beach unless you can run on water - there is a sea wall and concrete wave breakers all along the "beach". It's not really a scenic place with views of condos, ships and stalls but still the cooling sea breezes must count for something. I spent Thursday evening there and not a single runner was in sight.

The main reason I went to Melaka to see the historical sites but the battles between the Portuguese vs. locals, Portuguese vs. Dutch and later Dutch vs. English has left its toll on the sites. All that is left are ruins which are sometimes scribbled with grafitti. As for the formerly grand Melaka river, it is now a just a badly silted and tiny stream.

There are still a numerous old Peranakan buildings and houses left in Melaka town but there is not much Peranakan culture evident, I think. Nowadays, Peranakan is a dying culture with many of the younger generation assimilated into the larger Chinese community.

I also went to the crocodile farm and the Melaka Zoo at Ayer Keroh. The less said about the ruinous state of the farm the better. Spending the morning at the Malacca Zoo was however worth both my time and money (RM 7).

Other than the above, the history exhibits at the Stadhuys building were very informative. There are plenty of museums in Melaka for the historically inclined. There is even an UMNO Melaka Historical museum. Why would I visit that place ? I didn't.

Overall Melaka is OK for a few days visit although those expecting a visible evidence of history will be dissapointed.

Weekend Aug 27-28 Running Activities

I spent Saturday evening with an easy 6 km run wiyth Kong around the housing estates in Klang. It was quite hot but the easy pace (40 min for 6 km) helped to make to the run tolerable and enjoyable.

Sunday was my usual 20 km run at Lake Garden to Sri Hartamas. It rained heavily since 4.00 am and it was still raining as I drove along the Federal highway to then Bukit Aman car park. For a while, I though of cancelling but I was hoping it will be raining at the Lake Garden. I was mistaken, there was a drizzle but it stopped at about 6.00 am.

It was a bit cold and windy when Yong and I started our run at 6.10 am. There were about 20 runners or so much fewer than last week. It was quite pleasant and comfortable to run in a colder and windy conditions compared to the usual sitfling warm and humid conditions.

We took the usual route along Bukit Tunku and then to Sri Hartamas Road. We reached Sri the Petronas station in Sri Hartamas in 1 hr 2 minutes. A brief stop for a drink and then started our run back to Lake Garden. Soon a few of the faster runners (Adam, Thomas etc) overtook us but never mind, it's not a race and they were better runners than us anyway.

We reached Lake Gardens in about 1 hr 3 minutes. My legs were a bit sore but my left ankle was OK - I wore an ankle brace. We had a drink at the stall and wrap it up by 9.00 am.

It was another satisfactory long run for me although it never gets any easier each time. One last long run next weekend and by then I hope to be ready for the Putrajaya half marathon.

Back in Action but not much Action

Despite a sprainked left ankle, it improved sufficiently over Monday and Tuesday allowing me to run at KLCC park on Wednesday. I first ran 2 laps with Jamie, Ronnie and Kenneth. Later I ran with Kenneth for 2 more laps. The ankle was still painful so I stopped after the 4th lap (5.2 km). When we finished our runs, we sat at the Bench to relax and chat. There was another group running a bit later. You can see the photos in Tey's photo album (KLCC). The day was memorable because of the heat but fortunately we were graced by the presence of Princess Lisa.

Yesterday I also ran at KLCC park although there was still a bit of pain on my left ankle. Ran with Yong for about 3-1/2 laps (7 min 30 sec per lap), became tired and dropped out at the 600 m mark. Drank water , stretched and rejoin Yong from the 600 mark until 1300 m. Other than the two of us, no one familiar was running at KLCC park.

My left ankle should be OK by Saturday. My right knee has improved but it seems to be getting worse over the past one week whereas it was healing over the past 1 month. So from now on, I have to keep training distances low (5.2 - 6.5 km) and less frequent (4 times a week). I am really focusing my training to run the 2 half marathons in September. Hence, being able to do long runs on Sunday (20 km) will be more important than my shorter weekday runs.

I have registered for 2 races in September; Putrajaya (21 km - 11 Sept.), PJ half marathon (18 Sept.) and Shah Alam 10 km (25 Sept). They will me my last races for the next 2 months until possibly KRI's Ipoh (20 Nov. ) and Singapore on 4th Dec 2005.
