Welcome this is TLE and your listening to the All About Lost podcast episode 7.4.

Okay I am back for the 4th in my series of Lost Themes and mysteries podcasts — This week focusing in on Season 4

Here is how the show will go down

1. What we were looking forward to leaving season 3 and headed into season 4.  What were the big mysteries left hanging  –  And there were some really big ones
2. Lost missing pieces – this was the “alternate reality” aspect of the show this time and the producers fill us in on things they didn’t show us during the season.  These weren’t deleted scenes but new scenes.
3. Overvew of season 4.  Recap of the plot and things I really liked and disliked.
4. The big themes and mysteries – explored and explained.  Here we get into some things we might have missed but are now answered through the eyes of knowing the entire series.
5. Wrap up and preview of Season 5.

Season 4 was one of the best in my opinion just because I love adventure and this season we really see things accelerate in terms of action and plot.  The writers were no longer constrained on playing things out slowly – they knew their end date and could pace things out to reach it in the most entertaining way possible.  Also the love triangle between Kate, Sawyer and Jack was very limited, which left more time to explore Ben Linus and his nefarious plots and plans.  We also get to meet some of the most beloved characters for the first time in Dan Faraday, Lapidus and Miles.  Okay Miles was more tolerated then beloved but he was a great foil for a lot of jokes.  And the scene shifts away from the island for a good while which gives us the “fish out of water” element to the  story.

I.  What we were looking forward to from S3 to S4.

Season 3 ended on a huge shocker Kate and Jack were off the island and in LA sometime in the future.  But how did they get off the island, what happened to everyone else, who is the mysteries man who died (Jack went to his funeral), who is the person Kate says is going to miss her while she is visiting Jack, and what about time travel, did that play an element in the escape from the island?  These were all interesting questions, but what was worse for me, was just missing the characters over that summer.  I had grown accustomed to their faces so to speak, their conversations, and reactions, the laughs.  I think these folks were actually starting to have an effect on me.  But the good news was we get to see some of them during the Missings Pieces mobisodes

II.  Missing Pieces

These were short two to three minute scenes that filled in gaps in the story.  Things moslty the writers didn’t have time to explain, or more likely they realized needed explaining because it was hard to imagine the jump from one story line to another without them.  There were 13 made in all and the mobisodes were made for a new phenomena called “cell phone video”.  Yes you could watch video on your cell phone.  So the writers could get a sponsorship that way.  Here is a short review of the major revelations.  If you haven’t seem them and want to you should skip this segment   They are all interesting in one way or another, but mainly they are for us fans, who wanted more answers while we waited for season 4.  The most intriguing was the last episode.  Okay here is a short spoiler section if you haven’t seen the mobisodes.  Should only last about 30 seconds.

• Neil “Frogurt” was interested in Libby. (“The Adventures of Hurley and Frogurt”)
• Ben told Jack that if he left the Island he may want to return. (“King of the Castle”)
• Michael knew Ben’s name before any of the other survivors. (“The Deal”)
• Juliet told Jack of Ben’s plan to kidnap the pregnant women. (“Operation: Sleeper”)
• Walt was in Room 23. (“Room 23”)
• Arzt saw Jack chasing the vision of his father around the Island. (“Arzt & Crafts”)
• Arzt initially resisted moving to the caves, but changed his mind after hearing the Monster. (“Arzt & Crafts”)
• Sun planned on using the alias Dahlia Choi after leaving Jin. (“Buried Secrets”)
• Michael and Sun had more of a relationship than we knew about. (“Buried Secrets”)
• Arzt made up the “monsoon season” story. (“Tropical Depression”)
• Arzt was in Australia to meet a woman he met on the Internet. (“Tropical Depression”)
• Juliet was planning on showing Amelia Ben’s X-rays. (“The Envelope”)
• Christian Shephard, or some form of him, told Vincent to wake up Jack immediately after the crash. (“So It Begins”)

III.  Season 4 recap:

Here are the major events from Season 4:

• Season 4 focused particularly on new characters introduced to the Island and the fates of certain survivors who would leave the Island. Major themes included:
• The freighter, and whether its crew intend to kill or rescue the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors.
• Which survivors would leave the Island, and how, and what would happen to them following their rescue.
• Leadership, control, and power struggles, particularly between Jack and Locke, Locke and Ben, Ben and Charles Widmore, and amongst factions on the freighter.
• Michael’s mission to redeem himself following his murders of Ana Lucia and Libby.
• Spatiotemporal travel, with Desmond’s search for his constant and Ben’s activation of the DHARMA Initiative station 6, “the Orchid.”
• Christian Shephard’s mysterious connection to Jacob and the Island, and his relationship with Claire.
• Season 4 is the first season, with the exeption of the final episode of Season 3, to use the idea of Flash-forwards.
