A Fun Evening

Image
Friday evening, I drove my sister and I to John Sokol's Opening Reception at Group 10 Art Gallery in downtown Kent, Ohio.  The show was Terra Fabula "Earthy Tales" ~ it was an event showcasing the specialized artistic talent of 3 Ohio artists.
It was great to see my longtime friend, John, and my sister was happy to meet him.
We arrived in Kent early enough to enjoy a casual relaxing dinner at Bricco.
There is a wonderful sculpture in front of the gallery that is dedicated to our men and women who served in the armed forces.  A very large flower sculpture graces the opposite end of the gallery outside.
The gallery is directly across the street from the grand entranceway that connects downtown Kent to Kent State University.
It was a beautiful pleasant evening that my sister and I enjoyed sharing together.

Just a small section of the cement base that anchors the large Flower sculpture. Being a lizard lover, I had to spotlight the lizard.

Jake has some very unique ways of making himself comfortable on these long trips.  The last one is my favorite.

Ohio

Image
Even with several potty/walking breaks for Jake, and lunch, we made it to Ohio in 7 hours.  Traffic wasn't bad at all.  Nothing like my nightmare trip to South Carolina in May.

Yesterday, we left on a short trip to Ohio.  I wanted this truck to pull over and give me a cup of the BEST coffee on the interstate!

In Mary Bullington's art class today: Concentration on refining color by mixing, layering, and texturing. It was a fun exercise.

Alone

Image
Saw her on my way home from Vendor Night last evening.  She is always alone.  I would love her to come live in our yard.

Empty Nest

Image
Just checked the nest.  Babies are gone.  That one egg is still there ~ I got a good look at it when there were three eggs ~ it had a hole in it.  And so the little mockingbirds are off to explore the area.

Kissing the Bees

I am sharing one of many beautiful poems written by my friend, John Sokol.
You will love it.

Kissing the Bees

It’s August, and out my back window,
I can see a little girl -- seven, maybe --

kissing bees, in her mother’s garden.
She laughs wildly after every kiss;

after every kiss she licks her lips
and wipes them on her wrist.

Her mother calls out from the
kitchen window: “Kathleen Elizabeth!

I’m not telling you again! Stop kissing
those bees! You’re gonna get stung!”

Kathleen Elizabeth pouts and stares
wantonly at her bees in the blossoms.

She seems enthralled by the buzzing
throng. I wonder if she knows

that, in Brittany, generations believed
the tears Christ shed on the cross

turned into bees, that according
to Mohammed the bee is the only

creature that God ever spoke to directly,
that according to Herodotus, kings

of Scythia were buried in beeswax.
Maybe she was once chosen,

having lived a former life
in the Far East, where bees are believed

to impart eloquence to a child
of their choice. Maybe she intuits,

somehow, that when Plato, Sophocles,
and Xenophon were infants, bees

alighted on their mouths. She must
know something, because, now,

she is singing to the bees, as people
in England used to do, to keep their bees

at home and happy. And, now, I can hear
the thoughts that incite her desire,

that arrive on the breeze, as the whole
luminous day around her --

and around me -- seems to whisper:
“Kiss the bees! Kiss the bees!”

by John Sokol, from his book "In the Summer of Cancer"

Slammed

Image
It has been HOT and dry.  We needed rain.  This afternoon, we got slammed!!  Heavy rain and fierce wind. My crepe myrtle is drooping and lost a lot of petals.  The neighbor's mimosa tree lost pretty blooms, as well.  I am wondering how the little mockingbirds fared through the storm.  All is well and the sun is now shining.

Babies

The babies are getting bigger everyday.  You can see one eye on the little one on the left.

Mountains

Blue Ridge Mountains behind my house.  Hard to see all of them because our house is set down in, from street level.

Thimbles

Image
I have an obsession for little things. What will I ever do with all these thimbles? Anne Piedmont, your beautiful pottery bowl is the perfect storage space for them.

Mockingbird Babies

Image
 This evening.
It looks like only 2 of the 3 made it, and they are hungry.  I take my photos fast because Mom squawks up a storm when I am near the nest.
