About Michael Quantrell
Michael Quantrell is a seasoned Captain with more than 20 years of experience in yacht engineering, estate management, and racing ventures. His experience includes managing multimillion-dollar refits and overseeing deliveries on the East Coast. Throughout his career, Michael has consistently demonstrated a resilient leadership style.
He has also weathered severe storms during his career, including Category 4 Hurricane Irma in Florida in 2017.
Michael’s Love of the Water Began Early
As a young boy and adult growing up in Camden, Maine, you could find Michael either on the water or on the ski slopes racing. He was awarded three medals at the Junior Olympics, including a bronze and a silver in the Laser Class Division in a youth sailing competition.
Michael also raced professionally in various programs while he lived in New Zealand, New England, and England.
In high school, he dominated skiing and later participated in Friday night lights skiing in Maine for 10 years.
During this time, he won all three qualifiers in the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge, a free, casual ski and snowboard race series held across Northeastern U.S. ski resorts during winter. He did this while living in Florida.
He has also won many other small events.
Professional Career
Since he was 18, Michael Quantrell’s professional life has been as a yacht Captain. He managed boats ranging from 20 to 120 feet, and captained vessels up to 112 feet, most recently coming off a 100-foot vessel. He has managed multimillion-dollar yacht refits, turning vessels into fine pieces of art.
His experience includes shipping vessels from Mexico and throughout the United States, including the East Coast of Florida, the Bahamas, and up the East Coast.
Owner, Ox Eye Marine Corporation
For nearly five years, Michael Quantrell has owned Ox Eye Marine, where he manages multiple vessels ranging from 40 feet to 112 feet up and down the eastern seaboard and around every part of the Bahamas and Caribbean. Ox Eye manages all aspects of vessel management, including project management, crew placement, deliveries, systems analysis, major and minor refits, freighter shipping overseas, sales, boat shows, and every aspect tailored to individual needs and boat-specific requirements.
Captain, Motor Yacht (M/Y) Crown Jewel 96’ Broward
For nearly 18 months, Michael assumed the responsibilities of this vessel during the owner’s captain transition and was present during the owner’s Vintage weekend trip at Ocean Reef Club. He was responsible for ensuring the vessel’s safe operation, complying with legal guidelines, and investigating vessel damage. He hired and managed crew members, assigning them tasks.
Michael was also responsible for navigation and vessel maintenance, organizing travel for the vessel, including arranging dockage and handling Customs documentation and correspondence.
He oversaw the $300k refit of Crown Jewel at LMC, though the vessel was never shipped. In a family-run program, Michael led a team from Florida to the Bahamas. He managed and reported on the financial accounts for the vessel and assisted in listing and displaying the boat at the Palm Beach International Boat Show.
Additionally, he managed the vessel 501 (c) (3) donation process through its entirety.
Captain, Motor Yacht Remedy 90’ Offshore
For two years, Michael served as the full-time Captain and Project Manager for the M/Y Remedy, a 90’ Offshore vessel, where his responsibilities were similar to those he held on the M/Y Crown Jewel, a 96’ Broward.
He is most proud of the multimillion-dollar refinance and refit of the motor yacht Remedy, formerly known as Drumbeat. The refit took place at Safe Harbor Rybovich, and the vessel was purchased by a client in California with Michael’s consultation. The yacht was moved to Mexico, then shipped to Florida, where it was retrieved for a full mechanical reset. After spending a few months cruising in the Bahamas, the yacht returned to the shipyard for an extensive, multimillion-dollar refit. The before-and-after transformation of this project was remarkable, and the entire endeavor proved to be a highly successful and rewarding experience for Michael.
Additional Professional Experience
Michael’s professional career included serving as a Delivery Captain for M/Y Black Swain 112’ Westport, operating under USCG guidelines for offshore runs exceeding 24 hours, with multiple deliveries on the East Coast.
He was the Estate Manager and Captain for two vessels and an estate in Palm Beach, where he conducted day trips and managed all aspects of the vessels. Michael oversaw the day-to-day operations of the estate, including coordinating household repairs, supervising staff and contractors, and ensuring the preservation of the property’s historical features.
Additionally, he also served as Engineer and/or Captain of other vessels, including M/Y Venture 78’ Cheoy Lee, M/Y Epicenter 65’ Outerreef, and M/Y Mrs Lane 65’ Outerreef, where the owners lived aboard the yacht.
Toward the end of his racing career, he oversaw a S/Y Marilee, a 59’ Herreshoff vessel, managing the bow and deck during the racing season and handling crew training, logistics, and deliveries.
On a personal note, Michael’s passion for the outdoors extends to all things related to the water. He loves his dogs and spending time with family.
