Meeting Reminder: March 6th at 7:00pm at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center

Join us Thursday, March 6th at 7:00pm at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center for the March meeting. Mark Bower will present a program on “Ten Common Spring Mushrooms and Ten Fascinating Mushrooms”. Mark is an exception photographer of fungi and will have his work on exhibit at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. This is also an important meeting as we will be discussing the future of the chapter and holding annual elections. (Elections were postponed last meeting). I urge you to attend this important meeting.

Morel Madness will be hosted by our chapter this year. There are some very interesting speakers and guests from around the country. Thank you Dan for all your work in helping our chapter host this event. Morel Madness is a very fun and interesting! You wont want to miss it!

Jan. 8th Winter Dinner Canceled

I just wanted to let everyone know that we are canceling the winter dinner. We have another round of bad weather coming in. For everyone’s safety it’s best that we stay indoors. We will try and schedule another night. The next meeting will be March 6th. Stay warm everyone!

Winter Dinner – Wednesday, Jan 8th at Watershed Center

It’s that time again… our annual winter dinner is just around the corner. The winter dinner will again be at the Watershed Center (at Valley Watermill) on Wednesday, Jan 8th at 6:30 p.m. We also postponed the election until the Winter Dinner. We will also be discussing the future of the chapter, how we can become better, and who will lead the group in the future. This is an important (and fun) event for our chapter so we really hope to see you there. As usual, it will be a potluck so bring a dish or desert of some sort. Feel free to bring a guest. There is usually a game and a raffle. This is always a fun event so be sure and join us!

Next Meeting: Thursday, Sept 5th

Join us for our next bi-monthly meeting on Thursday, September 5th at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. Meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. We will have a very introductory presentation on slime molds (Myxomycetes). Although they are no longer in the kingdom Fungi, they continue to capture the attention of mycologists and mushroom enthusiasts. Because of the July 4th holiday, it has been a while since our last meeting. I look forward to seeing you all! See you there!

July 14th Foray Cancelled

Because of the heat and lack of rain the foray on Sunday will be cancelled. Bob has a cabin close to there and says it has been dry for weeks and zero fungi. Please let me know if you have any questions. We can discuss scheduling another foray to make up for this one.

July Events

Hi everyone! It has been a little quiet since Morel Season. What a great season we had! It was a long season and many mushrooms were found. With warm summer days and plenty of rain, we should have a decent Chanterelle season as well! I hope everyone is doing well. Here are a couple of reminders regarding events in July.

July 4th Meeting CANCELLED!
Because our meeting falls on July 4th those at the last meeting voted that we not hold the meeting in July. We will discuss any chapter business at the foray. I hope everyone has a great holiday!

Chanterelle Foray July 14th – 9:00 @ Busiek Conservation Area
We will meet at the Busiek Conservation Area for a few hours of mushroom fun. There is still a couple weeks until the foray so hopefully this rain doesn’t dry up. If it doesn’t, I expect a really good season. I would recommend you actually start looking soon. I usually start finding them at the end of June. Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can know who to expect. It will likely be hot and there are parts of Busiek that can be rugged so please, please bring water and dress appropriately. And BRING WATER!

Directions:
Busiek is easy to find. Just head south from Springfield on Hightway 65 for 18 miles. It will be on your left. You will see signs. Let me know if you have any questions.

Meeting May 2nd

I apologize for the delay on announcing the meeting. Our bi-monthly meeting will be at the usual time and place. Join us at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, Thursday May 2nd at 7:00. The program will be a film entitled “Mushrooms of North America”. See below for description.

Description: In his latest DVD Taylor takes the best of ten years of his video and weaves them with imagination, humor, and science into a travelog, peoplelog, and mycolog that is as entertaining as it is informative. A mushroom romp around the continent. Mushrooms of America features some of the wildest, weirdest, and most wonderful mushrooms and mushroom hunters in North America. Travel with Taylor from Florida to Nova Scotia to Washington state to California and many parts in between. Program length: approximately one hour.

Meeting Thursday March 7

Join us for our annual discussion of morels on March 7 at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. The weather will warm soon and with the rising soil temperatures comes the rise of morels!

Winter Dinner & Happy Holidays

First, let me say Happy Holidays. I hope everyone is having a safe and wonderful time with family and friends!

We received a date that the Watershed Center at Valley Watermill is available for our annual Winter Dinner. The date is January 3rd from 6:30 to 9:00. I apologize for the short notice. We don’t pay anything so we take the date we can get. This happens to be our normal meeting date so that works out well.

Winter Dinner Details:
Bring a friend and a covered dish to the Second Annual MOMS Springfield Chapter Winter Dinner. This is a pot luck event so bring your favorite dish to share. We will have a small door prize and some good fun entertainment, mushrooms stories and tall tales. We had a great time last year.

When: Thursday, January 3rd at 6:30 PM.

Meeting Thurday Nov. 1st

The next meeting is this Thursday at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center auditorium at 7:00PM. We don’t have a presentation this meeting. We will plan the winter dinner, hold elections, talk about the past year, take suggestions on what we can do better, and have an open discussion to talk fungi.
