Sunday Prompt: 15 March 2026
Hello and welcome to this feature (inspired by Story A Day May) where I post a prompt, and accompanying – though not necessarily connected – picture*, so actually two prompts, formerly every day but now on a Sunday due to other commitments (sorry!).
*This week’s black and white photograph shows a man in black trousers and calf-length black jacket walking towards a train. There are other people in the picture, ahead of the man, walking in the same direction.
Unless there’s a name, only the first word will be capitalised so you can use it anyway you like: as a title, idea or the exact phrase used within your piece.
Being the author of (to-date) five Writer’s Block Workbooks and Ideas Diaries, I know how even a single word can help as inspiration to write something new whether it’s a short story, poem, piece of non-fiction, a script or even a novel! It could be a distraction if you’re writing something you’re struggling with or would just like to do something different.
This week’s prompt is…
Hand pump
Do leave a comment below if you write something inspired by today’s prompt. NB. If you post your writing anywhere online it’s deemed as published (in the public domain) so may not be accepted elsewhere, so bear this in mind if you wanted to publish here and/or on your own site then submit to a competition or paying market. They would need to know.
If you’d like to suggest a prompt for me to post (ideally at least two in case one’s too similar to one already posted or something someone else has already suggested), please complete the form on the A Prompt A Day page. I will include your website link if you have one, posting them once a fortnight.
If you’re an author, editor, illustrator, agent, publisher (anything in the publishing industry) and would like to take part in a spotlight, see Saturday Spotlights or email me for details.

What a lovely review of Oh, Henry. The sixth is coming soon!
Word Count Wednesday: 11 March 2026
Hello and welcome to Word Count Wednesday. How have you been getting on?
Self-Pub Fest is going so well. I’ve added T&T panels (Tuesday/Thursday evenings at 6pm UK time – an hour earlier so they don’t clash with writing groups I belong to, meaning I can do them most weeks).
They’re also open to traditionally published authors, unpublished writers, readers and those providing genuine services (with a website) to authors… and everyone in the publishing industry who wants to take part.
I only have one author talking about her publishing journey this Thursday so if you’d like to take part, take a look at The T&T Panels page.
I’ve finally gone back to the sixth Henry Houdini Dog Detective series, Henry Goes to the Cinema ~ The Case of the Rogue Llama, which came back from my editor Graham back in November 2023!
I’ve finally got Amazon to listen to my plea to have searches for the correct spelling of my name, Morgen Bailey, show my books rather than MorgAn Bailey with a tiny ‘Search for Morgen Bailey instead’ link that no one notices. They say they can’t fix it but have escalated the issue to their IT department. Jeffrey/Geoffrey Archer don’t have that problem.
I have in the meantime added Morgan Bailey as a contributor so my books now show up on that page. Phew. The only other option was to have sponsored ads which would have cost me money every time someone clicked on them. Why should I pay for Amazon not being able to fix the issue. As I’ve told them, I live in hope!

Latest Monday Mini-Fest: Locations, Locations, Locations
Yes, Beth, Graeme and I had a lovely chat, for just under an hour, about book and film locations.
You can watch the recording below and the previous sessions (and 66 author spotlights!) on my YouTube channel.
If you’re an author (self- or traditionally published), wannabe, reader or provide author services (with a website!) – take a look at The T&T Panels, starting this Thursday!

*This week’s illustration shows a miniature funfair and brown circus-style tent, on a white surface and background. There are various rides including a big wheel, roundabout etc.

Word Count Wednesday: 4 March 2026
Hello and welcome to Word Count Wednesday. How have you been getting on?
No writing ~ as per usual ~ but a new set of panels on Self-Pub Fest!
As some authors are unable to make panels during the day and/or on Mondays, I have created ‘The T&T Panels‘!
As the cryptic name suggests, these will take place most Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7-8pm UK time), starting  Thursday 12th March. I go to two writing groups each month, so those dates are out, and I occasionally do talks (WI, U3A etc.) on those evenings so have put all the dates I can do up to the end of June. Most have topics already but I’m open to suggestions for those that haven’t.
The T&T also stands for Traditional and Trade, meaning that rather than just having self-published authors involved in the Monday Mini-fests there’s also an opportunity for traditionally published authors to take part, as well as those involved in the publishing industry, e.g. cover designers, illustrators, editors, publishers etc. Yes, everyone. 🙂
Ooh and we had our first Donation yesterday. Dennis C (actually a former student of mine) kindly donated £20 so this has gone on a new Donations page.
I also have a client’s novel to get back this Friday (hence why the T&Ts are starting next week) so I plan on picking up my WIPs from Saturday. I rarely book appointments (other than Mentoring) before noon so that’s ‘my’ time… or should be. You’ll find out next Wednesday whether I’ve succeeded but I do have a critique group coming up next Tuesday evening so will have to get something ready for that!
Do leave a comment below to share your progress, successes and otherwise, and of course anything else that’s happened to you, writing related, over the past seven days.
A lovely review for Oh, Henry!
Sunday Prompt: 1 March 2026
Hello and welcome to this feature (inspired by Story A Day May) where I post a prompt, and accompanying – though not necessarily connected – picture*, so actually two prompts, formerly every day but now on a Sunday due to other commitments (sorry!).
*This week’s photograph shows a young woman sitting in a cafe-style booth with long chestnut hair looking wistful to her right, out of a window. In her hand is a mobile phone. She’s wearing a long-sleeved pale grey cardigan with a white t-shirt with a red and pink picture (of a turtle?). In the foreground and background are small plants.
Unless there’s a name, only the first word will be capitalised so you can use it anyway you like: as a title, idea or the exact phrase used within your piece.

This week’s prompt is…
A better film than expected

Word Count Wednesday: 25 Feb 2026
Hello and welcome to Word Count Wednesday. How have you been getting on?
Having decided late last year to semi-retire (taking only crime/women’s fiction and writing-related non-fiction ~ I have three other editors who will take everything else), I then decided to set up a book festival to celebrate self-published authors, of which I am one. 🙂
So that’s rather taken over, wonderfully* but still… I have an editing deadline this Friday so that’s been my other focus this week but once that book’s back I will definitely be keeping the mornings for my writing. Other than the Monday Mini-Fests (click on the poster for details of next Monday’s event ~ there are still three places!), and the dentist (I’m having new Invisalign braces fitted next month), I have nothing booked before noon so I have no excuse. But yes, life happens.
*You can watch all the recordings on my YouTube channel, the latest being the wonderful two-part MMF#3 – Plotting vs Pantsing.
