Finding Phonics in a Sentence

Our class took the time to review what "Secret Stories" we have learned so far this school year.  First, I read the story and the students shared the sound. 
Then the students could not wait to find out what "Secret Stories" were in their sentence.  

• Trace the sentence
• Underline the secret stories 
• Write the secret story sounds in the box
• Color the picture

Segmenting Words With Robbie Robot

One of my favorite things to teach in kindergarten is writing.  In order for students to be able to write they must be able to hear the individual sounds in words. The students need auditory, kinesthetic and visual learning to make that connection between letters and sounds.  We have been having so much fun segmenting and blending words with "Robbie Robot". (THANKS to Deanna Jump for sharing her brilliant idea.)

After the students write the CVC word on his/her whiteboard,
I will write it on the SMARTboard.  

They LOVE to partner read with each other! 

This activity is so simple, but so fun!

Pete The Cat School Tour

On the first day of school, we  read (sing) the book Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes to the students.  
After the story...we go on a getting-to-know-the-school walk looking for different colored shoes with "CLUES" on them.   
We are always super surprised with how many of them TRULY believe that we'll find Pete the Cat.

WRITING TO FRIENDS IN KINDERGARTEN

Social skills and friendships are the foundation of kindergarten!  We know that friendship is important during the early years because this is the time they learn about the ‘give and take’ of relationships.  Writing letters to our friends in our grade level is a fun way to develop our writing skills and build meaningful friendships for years to come. 

Memorizing Students' Names

Learn your students' names flash card style!

Before "Back-to-School-Night", I copy yearbook pictures and make little flash cards to memorize my students' names. 
My students' faces light up when I greet them using their name.   

Cubby Names Tip

Getting your classroom ready takes a lot of patience and preparation.   Tip: Use a index card or post-it note to make sure each label is in the same spot in each cubby.  Your classroom is your home away from home for a majority of the year.   Don't let "CROOKED CUBBY NAMES" bother you every day!
