Overheard in a comic con bathroom:

"We have a new character... named Dr. Strange... Twas Steve's idea."
- Stan Lee, letter to Comic Reader #16, 23 February 01963, as quoted in Steve Ditko's 32-Page Package v.5 Tsk! Tsk!

"I'm telling you, the only reason that Neilalien has lasted so long is because he kills younger, more innocent, bloggers and drinks their blood in some twisted Ditko-inspired mystical ceremony."
- Fanboy Rampage 10/17/02005

"Is that the Eye of Yaphet Kotto?"
- A demon, Marvel Comics Presents #20

"The funny thing about that is that comic books and wrestling are two of the original arts that America has given to the world- the other being jazz."
- CM Punk, Inked Magazine interview 3/23/02012

- -

Creators/Publishers: Neilalien would love to help,
but he does not accept free comics or review submissions.

"Do not accept for review a book you are
predisposed to dislike, or committed by
friendship to like." - John Updike

Tom Brevoort Says Variant Covers Now "Part Of The Economics" Of Comics [Bleeding Cool]
[collectors served without excluding regular readers; more artists getting paid; simply buy the A cover at regular price if you want, or you have a choice if the A cover sucks; it's just so much more additive and rational and marketplace-self-correcting now than during previous crashes (eye roll emoji)!]

How about variant covers that are old-school: that show action, the story happening inside, have word balloons, etc.- instead of all these boring "pin-up" covers?

Direct Market shops and comic book singles had a decent 02025: someone under 60 spotted reading physical copy of Absolute Batman

ICv2 White Paper ComicsPRO Feb 02026: Comics And Graphic Novel Sales Reached New High In [0]2025

ICv2 White Paper New York Comic-Con Oct 02025: It's A New World: Big Shifts Lead To Good News For Direct Market In [0]2025

The Beat with ComicsPRO Feb 02026 reporting: "The Comics Industry Has Done It!"/Proves Its Resilience

Estimates: Comics and graphic novels sales in the US and Canada totaled $2.2 billion in 02025
Total sales in Direct Market comic shops close to $1 billion
Continuing the positive trend from 02024: when the periodical format hit a 15-year high $460 million in sales (but that probably meant higher prices not more buyers)

Item! Despite Diamond bankruptcy in Jan 02025/monopoly end/distributor chaos...

Item! Seeking "female-skewing periodical hit" to come out more regularly than Saga...

Item! DC Comics, once left for dead after "bloodbath" layoffs in 02020, and not even breaking 18% vs. Marvel's near-40% market share in 02024 Q2, pendulum-swings to top market share in 02025 Q4 and dominates the list of 02025's top 50 comics with its Absolute Universe, currently eating Marvel's Ultimate Lunch; Batman #1 sold 500K. But DC's Future Just Got Very Complicated re: Paramount buying Warner Bros [Salkowitz]...

Top Five Comics Industry Stories Of [0]2025 [Salkowitz] [Diamond bankruptcy; resurgence in Direct Market/interest in comics by Gen Z (or pause in the death spiral narrative); digital platforms arms race; DC being Absolute units; in search of the next manga hit or children's graphic novel hit like Dog Man; "for all the handwringing about the declining value and relevance" of the single/periodical/"floppy" format, it's still the best industry basis for creator regular pay, successful trades, and R&D for new characters and stories; holding up for now off the bottom after 15-year beatdown by manga, graphic novels, and digital]

The Beat announced their 02025 Comics Industry Person Of The Year: Marie Javins

Long-time comics veteran, Javins, as Editor-In-Chief, has excelled shepherding DC from dark times to hotness with Absolute line, Vertigo revival, Compact Comics format, etc.

Javins is known around these parts as why we have a couple (but only a couple) Warren-Ellis-written Doctor Strange comics [according to the 30-year-old scuttlebutt: firer of Quinn (who was providing the Doc supercomics Marvel thought they wanted), hirer of Ellis, then left Marvel very soon after, but Ellis didn't want to work with anyone else]

Diamond Comics Moves To Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, As Banks Pull Funding [Bleeding Cool]

Chapter 11, Title 11, United States Code [Wikipedia]:

In Chapter 11, in most instances the debtor remains in control of its business operations as a debtor in possession, and is subject to the oversight and jurisdiction of the court. A Chapter 11 bankruptcy will result in one of three outcomes for the debtor: reorganization, conversion to Chapter 7 bankruptcy, or dismissal.
In Chapter 7, the business ceases operations, a trustee sells all of its assets, and then distributes the proceeds to its creditors.

This legacy-numbering-significant one-shot of five short Doctor Strange tales has some charm. It shows the imaginative magically-oriented stories one can tell with Doc. It has nostalgic callbacks for fans. Doc even has his OG/Cloak looks in most of the stories- recent Doom-Asgard situations mostly thankfully ignored and won't date the book. We get something new and interesting about what animates the Cloak (and are those *MCU* Ancient One and Mordo quotes?). And yes, Doc helps and trains other people- and storytelling dictates we find out more about those people.

But while these stories might be fine on their own- they merely have Doc in them. How are they anything special about commemorating Doctor Strange? Except for the very good "Astral Scars", these stories seem more about the other people. Doc feels more like an observing supporting character in his own "celebration"- as he sadly so often is- "a plot device in somebody else's story".

If you're going to "reveal untold tales of Stephen Strange's past", how about something new from his own training with the Ancient One, instead of from Magik's training? How about a more direct story about how/why Doc and the Cloak have a special bond- or the Cloak detects that Enitharmon is in trouble, and Doc competently figures out the truth on his own- instead of passively being told the yarn about Enitharmon's daughter? How about if the negativity troll grows out of Doc's own shoulder, instead of Steingrimr's, showing how Asgardian magick weirdly affects him, and becoming a check-in for his own self-confidence? How about a ghost story about someone Doc once couldn't save instead of someone the Black Fox couldn't save?

It never crossed the minds of the writers and editors to make Doc's anniversary book actually about Doc? Disappointing.
