Grateful to be an Aggie (4)

I am grateful for the "I Believe" chant we do before every game.  There is something about it that gets you pumped up.  I was practically shaking with anticipation before the first game this year, just waiting for the clock to tick down to 30 seconds.
It never gets old.

I really do believe.

Grateful to be an Aggie (3)

How could you not be grateful for Brady Jardine?
He is so great.  From the passion, to the blocks, to the MONSTER slam dunks, Brady has it all.

I'll miss him next year.
Here's to the best senior year.

Grateful to be an Aggie (2)

I am grateful for the Spectrum.
This place is where some of my favorite memories take place.
Where else can you stand and yell with 4,000 other crazy students (yeah, I know I'm not a student) and have it be completely normal?
Image

I'll always love the Spectrum.
All you have to do is be inside the Spectrum to feel its MAGIC.
There is no other place like it.

Grateful to be an Aggie (1)

So last year, the day before Thanksgiving, Janae and I laid in my bed and listed 100 things we were grateful for about Aggie basketball.  I told her I would dedicated the next November on my blog to the team.  No one else will think these are as funny/perfect as we do, so don't bother reading the blog in November.  Anyway...without further ado:

I am grateful for cute new basketball players.  I've been so stressed that all of my boys graduated last year.  Meet Ben.  It's completely fine and not creepy at all that he was born in 1992.

I think the new team and I will get along just fine.

Bleeding Blue

Anyone that knows me knows that I love anything do to with the Utah State Aggies, especially basketball. This love is spilling over into football too.  It's not always easy, but regardless of what happens, I am always proud to be an Aggie!

On Friday, Janae and I went down to Provo to the USU v BYU football game.
Image
We had such high hopes, but that last minute just ripped our hearts out.
The game was fun though, and we had a great time sitting in the middle of all the BYU fans as we cheered our hearts out for our Aggies, high fived when we scored, and sang the fight song and Scotsman.  I think they all secretly loved us.  We weren't mean, just cheering for our team.
While it would have been so great to beat BYU at home (and win the other two games we lost in the last two minutes), we still love our Aggies and we always will!

And I know most people will not read this next part, it needs to be said.  Matt "Fafner" Sonnenberg, former Aggie crowd leader wrote this after the game.  It sums up everything I feel about my Aggies:

1. Nobody said it would be easy

All of us who truly live and die by our Aggies know exactly what each other are feeling right now. The wonderings of "what if" and "so close" are inescapable. We know what it feels like to beat BYU after 2010, but to do it a second time and in their house would have been something truly incredible. Now at 1-3, we've had our hearts ripped out three times this season, in something that seems to be nothing but consistent with the past of Aggie football that we've come to know.

But this feels different. This year isn't like others. This time around, we all seem to know that we've got what it takes to make it back to a bowl game. Not only that, but for one's heart to be ripped out, one's heart has to have attached emotion to something. We've obviously attached ourselves to this team because we believe in it. Not only do we believe in it, but we love it. We seem to love their mentality, their excitement and maybe most of all, them.

Robert Turbin's name has already been nearly a thing of legend at USU the past few years. Bobby Wagner could just as easily have a four-letter word with an "ing" at the end for his middle name. Same for Kyle Gallagher. Kerwynn Williams is lightning in a bottle, and we know that anytime the ball makes it into his hands, something big could happen. And Chuckie Keeton, well... Who didn't fall in love with him from day one? There are things to love about every player on this team, and it seems like everybody can see it.

Call it love, call it dedication, or call it insanity... To me, all three can be summed up into two simple words: Aggie pride.

2. How this brings all of us together.

Utah State is different from the other schools in Utah. At USU, people come from all over to put their previous lives behind them and start anew in a small college town that, upon first glance, doesn't seem to have much to do. So we lean on each other. We make new friends and we find new things we enjoy. People with varying interests who might have otherwise never even associated with one another somehow become inseparable in Logan. Things you never thought you would even care about become things you love, and maybe most of all, Logan, along with all its culture and mentality, becomes a part of you.

We come to Utah State and in turn, we all come together. And even when we're gone, or when we leave town just temporarily, it's like a part of us is still left behind. But when we're all together, in a town and at a school that brought people together in ways you haven't seen before in your life, we have our Aggies. They are ours, and few people can say that. We know that we're third fiddle in this state and that we have to fight that much harder for every win and every ounce of respect, and that fight brings us even closer than anything else.

3. The lowest of lows

We know heartbreak. We know heartbreak way too well. We've felt it time and time again over the years and already this season. We felt the excitement of being the biggest story in the country against Auburn, only to have things ripped away from us at the end. We saw the meltdown versus Colorado State and were left only to wonder why and how that could have happened. Then, tonight we saw what once looked to be nearly a sure win against BYU slip away by the hand of a pair of miracle plays on their part.

But it goes beyond that. We've seen it in basketball too. When we joined the WAC for the 2005-06 school year, we took a top 25 Nevada team to overtime on their home court in the WAC championship game, only to let that win slip away at the end. The next year, we beat No. 10 ranked Nevada in the semifinals, only to miss a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer to lose the championship yet again. Then, the following year, after winning our first regular season WAC championship, we got beat in the semifinals, failing to even reach the championship game for the first time.

There have been a lot of rough finishes, long and miserable drives home and what has seemed like some horrible strings of bad luck.

4. The highest of highs

Because of that bad luck, and because of us knowing how bad it sucks to lose, that is what makes winning so special. That trial we went through is what gives us the sense of feeling that we've finally done it, and seeing the players, coaches and often times close friends of ours succeed on the field or the court is what makes something so gratifying.

In 2009, when USU fans took over Reno for the WAC Tournament, just about anyone there will tell you that was one of the best three-day stretches of their life, because for that weekend, things finally went our way. Even when we seemed on the verge of heartbreak yet again, Tyler Newbold played the role of Superman, giving us one of the most exciting moments I've ever witnessed to put us into the championship game where we went on to dominate Nevada on their home court. We had finally done it, and storming that court to celebrate with our team and all our friends is an experience that words can't describe. The only thing that can truly convey how good it felt was to have been there, bleeding Aggie blue, and having agonized and dealt with tough losses before it.

Then, in 2010, despite injuries to seemingly everybody on the football team, we tasted greatness yet again. Just one year ago, we got to experience what generations of USU students never gotten to experience. We had the entire country watching us celebrate that moment. We had the rest of the State of Utah backing us. And most of all, we had each other, knowing full-well what we'd been through in the past, now with agony turning to bliss when those final seconds ticked away and 31-16 became a number of infamy.

Would that have all had the same thrill were it not for the heartbreak and agony followed us down the road to get there? Of course not. That is why nights like tonight are important to remember, if for nothing else as the night that Utah State-BYU officially became a rivalry, no matter what anybody else says. They tried calling 2010 a fluke, but Aggie fans all knew better, and when they stormed their field for a win over us, at that point it was officially on. They fear us, as they damn well should.

5. How far we've come

The Utah State student section at the game in Provo tells it all. The excitement of Eric Moats' and Robert Turbin's touchdowns, and every clutch third-down conversion we made demonstrate the passion we have based on the yelling and jumping around that we were doing. On the flip side, the collective sadness and heartbreak we all felt at the end is also what tells the story. You could look to the person next to you and know that their pain was the same thing you were feeling. That unity is what defines Aggie Pride.

Whether you were a freshman in 2006 like me when we won just one game only to suffer through several more terrible years, or are brand new this year to Utah State, you've already felt the heartbreak that generations of USU fans know all too well. But that heartbreak is what makes things like a WAC Tournament championship or a win at home over BYU so special. Those lows and highs bring us all together in the same way, it's just the emotions that vary. The more bad that comes though, the more the good will be amplified. That is why it is important to remember this night and how you felt.

But things are on the rise. Anybody familiar with the program can see it. We've got superstars on this team who are going to carry us to new heights. The days of us routinely getting blown out wherever we play are gone. That 2006 season, we lost to BYU and Utah by a combined score of 86-0 in back-to-back games. Now BYU needs a miracle to beat us at home.

6. Love

It is so weird to be feeling this strongly about a team that just ripped my heart out for a third time in four games, but I have never loved my Utah State Aggies more. Football, basketball or hockey.  I believe in this team so much, and I believe in this program and the direction it is going. I believe that decades of despair are ending right before our eyes and we're at one of the final trial before we ascend to a new level of football unseen by generations before us. We're where dedication is being challenged the most, and on the other side is the greatness that we've all battled through tough times to realize. Maybe it's that I believe that this is the group that will take us over that hump, but regardless of what it is, I love this football team.

We're not there yet, but neither is the end of the season, and with each loss comes a new lesson. With each loss, the thrill of victory will be that much sweeter. No matter what, do not give up now. Not when we're this close. Not when we're just a mistake or two per game away from greatness.

Stick with this team. Be a part of when things all went right for us finally. And when they do, all of these tough times will make it worth the ride.

Go Aggies.

Rascal Flatts

Image
Laura, Janae, and I went to the Rascal Flatts concert at the beginning of September.
It started off with really nice weather.
Then the next thing we know it is POURING rain.  I am not trying to be dramatic here, it was seriously pouring rain.  It started soaking through the blankets we were hiding under. There wasn't a dry spot on me. I was stressed I was going to be freezing, but ended up mostly drying out.

Image
These pictures do not do justice to how hard it was raining.   At one point it was hailing.  We were sitting in puddles.

We also found our favorite people nearby.  Of course.  There was lots of fist pumping, singing to each other, and general ridiculousness.  I loved it.
Image
Not pictured is my parents.  Yes, I went to a concert with my parents.  My mom loved these people too and had me take a picture of them with her camera.  See where I get my people watching love from?

Here we are just enjoying ourselves, only slightly worse for the wear after the rainstorm.
Image

After the concert we had to haul our 50 pounds of blankets to the car.  We used a trash bag to get them to the car.  It took both Janae and I to carry it.  One of the blankets was a huge denim and flannel blanket, yeah, not heavy at all.
Image

On the way home we decided we needed french fries and took this gem of a picture in the drive thru.  We are so cute.  Good thing we have each other.

And In Other News

Girlfriend and I went to the lake.

 and really special pictures.

I went to the Box Elder County Fair and went to the rodeo.
Image

I went through the TEMPLE.
Some of my family came with me, including Dan,

Girlfriend was there too.  Kim met up with us after too.

It was a pretty grown-up thing of me to do.

So yep, lamest post ever. There was nothing funny about that, but that's what I've been doing.

The Proof

Here is the proof that I'm not always girly.
While I don't do anything crazy like backflips or jumping off the 65 footer, you can see me at 41 seconds, 1 minute 13 seconds, and 3 minutes 12 seconds.
At the 3 minute part I was supposed to jump at the same time as Kade but chickened out. I got pressured into jumping with a slow clap. So worth it.

Shout out to Dan and Jake for making the video!
Pretty cool, huh?

Little Miss Adventure

Not everything I do is crafty and/or girly.  Exhibit A. (AKA the only exhibit.)
Cliff jumping.  I love being in the water.  I love a little adrenaline rush.  Porcupine Dam is perfect for me.  There are baby cliffs for me to start with and then work my way up to higher cliffs.  No matter how many times I go, it is scary every single time.  Even if I just jumped off two minutes ago, taking that leap off the cliff again gets my heart going a little.  The fall is fine, the plunge is fine, it's the leap.

Anyway a group of us went this past weekend and had a great time.

Getting ready for the swim across the lake.

The dog that kept scaring me.

I don't even scream or act girly when I do this.

Taking the leap.

The whole group.  Three of us already hit the water though.  Next time I'll be at the top!

It's such an awesome summer activity.  It never gets old!

I Want To Ride My Bicycle. I Want To Ride My Bike.

And with an adorable bike like this, how could you not want to ride it?
Image
I had to assemble the bike.  The first night I had it about 98% finished.  I needed the basket on and more air in the tires.  I couldn't wait to ride it though.  It was too cute not to ride.  So I rode it up the hallway at my apartment.  It was definitely one of the more special things that I've done.  The combination of half full tires, carpet, and being in 7th gear because I couldn't get going long enough to change gears made me look like I was drunk as I shook and swerved slowly down the hallway.  Then I would laugh my head off and ring the bell (which is really loud), and it would make me jump, and I'd laugh even more.  I would then back the bike up and repeat.  It was a great ten minutes.

I made this liner for my basket.   I must say that I'm pretty proud of my novice sewing skills.  That is not a square basket and all of the seams line up pretty perfectly where they need to go.
Image
You probably read this and think, "Who just compliments herself?"  Well if you understood what I have to work with (I can be really challenged sometimes.  Cue story about riding bike down the hallway...), then you would understand why this is such a big deal and also be showering me with praise.

Anyway...
Kim also got a new bike.  We broke them in yesterday.  I made an 8 mile round-trip excursion.  We rode our bikes to Twizzlberry.  On the way home we busted out some Justin Beiber on my phone and sang along as we cruised down the street.  There is nothing more American that a summer evening bike ride, eating ice cream, and rocking to JB.
Image

My only regret:  That I did not do this sooner!
I LOVE MY BIKE!
Really.

The Bear Lake Trip That Almost Wasn't

For a few weeks now Kade has been planning a Bear Lake trip.
The day finally came.
The original time to leave was noon.
Then it got bumped to 12:30.
When did we really leave?  One.
Kade, Brent, Matt, and I piled into Matt's car.

Half way between Logan and Bear Lake we hit a pothole.
The pothole was conveniently located next to the dead deer.

Image

So 1:30 brought about a flat tire (that you cannot see in this picture).
We are still not sure how the above picture resulted in the one below though.
Image
Trust us, it was flat though.  No matter how long we waited it remained flat.  Weird, I know.  We had the spare, the car jack, and other tools, but we needed some special wrench to get to the lug-nuts, and we did not have that tool.  Of course.  What else didn't we have?  Cell service.  It reminded us of why the 90's sucked.  So Matt took off down the mountain to try and get a signal to call for a tow.  In the meantime, some forest ranger guy stops.  YAY!  Except for not.  He mostly told us that the car was in a bad spot right on a corner.  Yeah, we know.  Then he was ready to leave.  Finally Kade asked if he could give us a ride or help at all.  Oh you have a two way radio you could use?  Why did you not offer that before???  He said he could call for a tow truck.  But then we needed Matt to tell us who he wanted to call because it needed to go through his insurance.  So we were stuck again.  Brent took off to go see if he could find Matt.  Forest service man took down our info, while Kade and I could not have been more pleased about how unhelpful this man was being.
Image

Brent was such a trooper and RAN back up the mountain. I was impressed.
Image

Unfortunately he didn't have Matt with him, so we were still stuck.  Forest ranger dude said that he'd be back in two hours and help us if we were still there.  All I could think was, "Shoot me now if I'm still here in two hours."  And that thought almost became reality.  Matt didn't come back until 3:00.  An hour and a half.  This seemed to encompass all of our emotions.
Image

While we waited this is what we did:
We noticed Brent's injury from the accident.  Or he had a scab before and ripped off.
Image

Kade unsuccessfully tried to remove the pole from the ground.  Maybe next time.
Image

Kade picked me a bouquet.
Image

And I loved it.
Image

A tour bus drove by and people took pictures of us.  We felt like celebrities and sang this song.

We got tired and decided to sit in the car.  Then a highway patrolman came and sat behind us with his lights on so we wouldn't die (and it was very nice of him).  That allowed Brent and Kade to take naps.
ImageImage

Finally Matt came back!  We cheered.
Image

Highway Patrolman and Tow Truck Guy observed the situation.
Image

Matt brought a friend to take us back down to Logan.  We made it an hour and half sitting on the side of the road without dying and then almost died on the way home.  Idiot driver (who we are very grateful to) almost slammed into the back of a car several times.  To distract ourselves, Brent and I wrote notes back and forth and took pictures of the water that saved us from dehydration.
Image

We arrived back in Logan around 3:30.  We had ourselves a little pit stop and decided to try for Bear Lake again.  In my car this time, where we ate an entire bag of Doritos.   By 5:00 we were at Bear Lake!  It only took us FOUR hours longer than we planned.  WOOHOO!
Kade and Brent were real excited about it.
Image

We just went to some rocky beach (because at this point paying to park at the sandy beach was not worth it).  Kade was happy because there was water and he could use his floaty.
Image

Except he used his floaty to beat on small children (not pictured).
Image
He also laid on his floaty for a bit and decided we should play Titanic.  So I ran him into an "iceberg" and tipped him over.  He then clung to me and nearly drown me claiming, "It was the part where someone almost drowned Rose."

Since it was rocky, I didn't want to take off my flip flops, but kept losing them in the water.  So I found some plants to strap them to my feet.  Best idea ever.  It worked like a charm.
Image

Kade used his floaty to have another nap.
Image

Overall, you could say it was a very successful trip (minus the first five hours).
Image

We also stopped for some shakes on our way home.  Once back in Logan we went directly to Cafe Rio for Taco Tuesday.  Then we took our cute lake-selves to a fire.  Rain caused the fire to turn into game night.  To end the day Kade took it upon himself to become my own personal hairstylist.  He felt a Snookie-esque look was in order.  He did not disappoint.
Image

Good day boys.  Good day.
FBR (flat tire, Bear Lake, Rio) will always be ours.
