LONGTERMER 2: 125th month report: Honda Civic FD2 2.0iS

LONGTERMER 2: 10th year and 5 months report: Honda Civic FD2 (Season 2, vol 4)

In this blog entry, I'm posting my Family's ride.  The Honda Civic FD
2 2.0 IVTEC.  I called it Season 2 volume 4 because I haven't been updating it for
1 year and 5 months.  This is the 125th month we owned the Honda Civic FD2 2.0I-S.

Image
Update: 29 December 2018.  The Engine mounting, Compressor and Rear Double wishbones still factory fitted.  Though the Compressor showing signs of failure, intermittently blowing hot air.  How to take care of compressor (dad's tips):

1) Change your cabin filter every 20,000km
2) don't full blast the air cond, don't use Auto air-cond.  Dad's fave temperature 25 deg. Celsius at 1/3 fan speed.
3) Don't on the aircond for 1st 2km (Also off air-cond before ignition off)
4) When driving to Genting (uphill) off the air cond.  Blower only.

The reason why it hasn't been updated for 17 months is because there's very little things to write about.  Apparently, this is a Very Reliable car.

My Colleague was surprised to learned that the Engine mountings and Rear Double Wishbones Suspensions are still Factory Fitted.

His 5 years Old Elantra 1.6 already changed 1 set Engine Mountings and 1 set absorbers.  We stopped servicing with Honda on the 6th year owning the Civic.  Anyway for your reference, maintenance cost of the Civic FD2 without Hidden wear and tear stuff like Rear Wheel bearing, Absorbers, Brake pads.

Nothing much to update.  Firstly, The Good news.   Last year, I walked to Kah Motor CSL's just across the road to submit quotation.  Lo and behold, No LOADING.  Also, NO Betterment, use ORIGINAL parts, No Excess, 200km radius towing.  Agreed Value clause...  This package by MSIG is called HONDA INSURANCE PACKAGE.

Click the link below for more information:

Basically last year was the FINAL YEAR I get to enjoy HIP (Honda Insurance Package).  Thank God!  This year,  I decided to go 1 Up.  Bypass Kah Motor and renew Direct from MSIG Insurance.  I still don't get loading.  And I got 10% Discount!

The Civic FD have 1 oil change using Castrol magnatec and Original Honda Oil filter, 1 Brake fluid Change apart from Annual Road tax and Insurance renewal.  Very reliable and low maintenance car.

Over the past 17 months, the Civic Clocked 9,858 only or 580km per month only.  It's rarely used as My dad, was working Oversea 1/2 of the year.  And I've been driving my Hyundai i10 daily.  RECENTLY, past 6 months, dad came back more often, hence using the Civic More frequent. 1 Penang drive, 2-3 outstation drive and Occasional Genting run.

Minor trim wear and tear as below:

My opinion on this Honda Civic FD2 2.0S IVTEC:

The 8th generation Civic FD's the last Civic With Double wishbones suspension, only Civic with 60:40 split fold rear seat back and the Most stylish Civic inside out. This is the Best Civic.  Apparently, Malaysians agree with me as reflected by it's Strong Resale Value. First batch 2006 Civic FD are still selling at RM36,000 to RM42,000 depending on conditions. That's Mind boggling for a 12 years old Car.  An astounding 52% retained value in 8 years and 40% retained value in 10 years.   This is the reason why my dad's Keeping the Civic for another few years.

SHOULD YOU BUY A USED CIVIC FD?

Why not?
Honda Civic in General are Extremely tough cars.  The 1st 3-generations are victim to Rust only. Many Civic from the 4th generation EF onwards (1987 to 1991) are still running on Malaysian roads.  The 4th-Generation's where Rust-proofing extensively applied by Kah Motor.  There are Still many 5th and 6th generation on the road which are between 16 to 24 years old yet the EG (Dolphin) and EK (Taai Ngan Chai) still Desired by Ah Bengs.  Average lifespan of a Civic unless Total-loss or stolen are 20 years!!!  So say you bought a used 2008 model, on average the Civic FD can last you another 10-12 years.

Importance of Following Car Manufacturer's Service Schedule

In this blog entry, I'm writing about 3 Wasted Free Service cases by Hyundai and Peugeot respectively.
Let's talk about Hyundai specifically case 1:

Case 1: Customer Bought New Tucson TL Executive from Kuantan late March 2016.  To enjoy the free service coupon, he MUST service his car at 1000km or 1 month whichever earlier.  Apparently, this guy only decided to came in today (almost 3 months later) at 5,000km.  The consequence?
Image

1) 3 years or 50,000km Free Service Coupons VOID.  He must pay for the service.
2) Future Warranty claims Hyundai Sime Darby Motors would be more difficult as they have a point to argue.

This is a classic Example of NOT FOLLOWING Routine Maintenance schedule by car Manufacturer.  1st service or 1000km's vital to flush out excessive metal parts due to new friction inside your engine. Its best to follow suggested break In time as mention on your vehicles manual.

By the way,  Full throttle is not advisable at all with a new vehicle for first 1000km.  The metal parts inside your engine needs to give in or adjust with one another for the best optimal movement.  That's why new engine needs this break in time.

CASE 2: Peugeot 308 Turbo. (source Lowyat Forum by frequency):

Just my piece of advice before you heading to get Peugeot car, especially the 308 Turbo edition. This is what happened to my family member.

Summary:

She purchased a Peugeot 308 on the date 24th of February 2009.

Turbo kit spoilt 3 times under warranty and hitting frequent Depollution Error
Right after warranty expired recently, the turbo kit leaked again! We are so frustrated but still have to fork lots of money and times on it and guess what even worse, right after middle of highway back hometown, the timing chain has broken!

The car has been following the full service and maintenance schedule by Nasim and never been sent to any unauthorized service dealer.

Note: Mileage only 59,000km.  Car is only 4 years old at time of writing (2009)

We have lodged the report to Nasim however they not honor to bear the repair cost.
We have been highlighting the issue in their Facebook but message been deleted..

What a joke that a company doesn't not willing to take into feedback from customers.

QUOTE(frequency @ Jun 27 2013, 04:59 PM)
Update !
The MD from Peugeot Malaysia has called us and claimed top management has looked into the problem.  No update from him since then.

Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, please Follow Car Manufacturer's Service Schedule.

Women prefer men to take the lead - in car maintenance

Women prefer men to take the lead - in car maintenance

LONDON: Women are still passing on the responsibility of car servicing to male counterparts, according to new research from car servicing network, Bosch Car Service.

Just three in 10 women said that they take their own cars for a service, compared with seven in 10 men. While neither men nor women expressed a particular ‘dread’ towards car servicing when asked to compare it with any other household chores, a significantly greater number of women (35%) stated that they were not confident that they would get a good experience from a car service, as opposed to just 24% of men.

“It is clear that there is still a feeling of discomfort amongst women drivers towards taking their cars in for a service, which could be why they are leaving it up to men”, said Bosch Car Service Concept manager, Howard Price.

“The majority of customers in general (70%) already feel confident that they will get a good experience of getting a car serviced, and this is good news for the profession. However, there are still discrepancies according to gender and age; car servicing professionals need to continue to do all they can to build the same levels of confidence among all customers, regardless of whether they are male or female, old or young.”

The survey was conducted to compare drivers’ perceptions and to highlight any concerns amongst the public towards car servicing. Almost half of the women asked stated that they leave car servicing up to the men in their families, with 36% leaving it to husbands, 6% boyfriends and 4% dads.

Bosch Car Service, which has over 500 garages in its British-wide network, recently released the results of its annual customer satisfaction survey, scoring 99% for overall customer experience.

The survey also revealed that three in ten drivers under the age of 24 admitted to letting mum and dad deal with the responsibilities of car maintenance, and just three in ten took their own cars in for a service.

This was significantly less than the percentages from other age groups that take their own cars to be serviced – with all other age groups showing as approximately 50%. In contrast, younger drivers didn’t express any greater concern about car servicing experience in general than any of their older counterparts.

Howard continued: “With younger drivers, the reason for leaving it up to parents is most probably because of inexperience – as well as cost – rather than feeling unconfident in the experience of car servicing.”

Although younger drivers expressed no greater dread or concern about car servicing overall, they were significantly more concerned than any other drivers about garages overlooking faults, with 20% stating this as their biggest concern. This varied significantly with the thoughts of older drivers, who – at aged over 35 – averaged just 8% who had the same concern.

“This could indicate a wider lack of confidence in vehicle maintenance amongst newer drivers”, continued Howard.

“Garages need to reassure younger and newer drivers, and make an effort to explain to them about any problems that are detected in their vehicles to make sure they gain an understanding – and therefore a confidence – in maintaining a car, detecting faults, and staying safe on the roads.”
