SHOOTING IN THE DARK – CRIMSON TRACE MIDNIGHT 3 GUN INVITATIONAL

I’ve mentioned Crimson Trace’s Midnight 3-Gun invitational several times on this website as well as social media. Were you an attendee, or involved a that the First Annual Concealed Carry Holster Fashion Show in Hudson, NY , you probably witnessed my eyes light up and a big Cheshire grin sweep over my face  as I talked about it at one point or another.  If you could see me sitting here, looking back at those outrageously fun nights, you’d see that there is still a glimmer of excitement on my face.Image

When Iain Harrison of Crimson Trace  invited me to the invitational, as well as the media days surrounding the event, I was ecstatic. Guns, flashing lights, lasers, shoot houses, thermal imaging – and all in the dark. Seriously, I can’t think of a more stimulating (or fun) match. Because I had virtually no experience shooting 3-gun, let alone shooting 3-gun in the dark, I respectfully declined his invitation to shoot it with firearms, but took him up on his invitation to shoot it with my camera.

For those of you who are not familiar with Oregon, this state has a variety of ecosystems that are all breathtakingly beautiful. While the media days started out in Portland, where rain coats are mandatory attire for ten months out of the year; the match itself took place about three hours South East of Portland in Bend.  Sitting alongside the Cascade mountain range and the Deschutes River, at an elevation of about 3,623 feet,  the part of Bend that we were in was literally the high desert. We’re talking hot days, and temperatures that got below freezing at night.

Bend is considered one of the sporting “hubs” of Oregon. With the Cascades, rivers, and desert in such close proximity of each other, just about any adventure is possible. That being said, the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association (COSSA) has a huge shooting range on 600 acres of BLM land outside the city. This California King of a range is where CTC hosted the midnight invitational.

The shooters, media, reps, etc. had the option of camping out on the range, or staying at one of the many resorts in the area.  CTC put us media folk up at the lovely Mt. Bachelor resort and the distance from the resort to the range was gapped by an easy forty minute ride on the “media bus”.

Camping out

Now let’s talk a little bit about the logistics here so you can get a better idea of all the dirty details.

When:

  • Media Days – July 14 and 15, 2012
  • Match – July 16 and 17, 2012
  • Awards Banquet – July 18, 2012

Gear we needed to bring:

  • Normal 3-gun gear
  • Weapons lights
  • Personal head lamp
  • Ammo

Gear that was provided:

  • CMR-201 Rail Master™ Laser from Crimson Trace
  • One additional Crimson Trace product for your preferred 3-gun (see Shooter Info Form)
  • Stage guns & ammo

What wasn’t allowed :

  • Full auto firearms (except those provided for use at the event)
  • Steel core or jacketed ammo (for info about steel core/jacketed ammo read this)
  • Steel shot
  • Tracers (fire hazard in the high desert)

Winnings:

  • 1st place $6,000 (+ another $4,000, to equal $10,000 if you won the match using CTC products
  • As well as various awards for High Lady, Top five shooters, and High Junior shooter.

Divisons :   The entire match was one division – open equipment.

Sponsors:

Bladetech                    Federal Ammunition         LED Lenser           Nosler

Bushmaster                 Flir                                      Leupold                 Otis

Colt Competition         FNH                                    MGM Targets        Primary Weapon Systems

Danner                          Leatherman                      Nike                       Warne Scope Mounts

Some of the sponsors had tables at the match. Both Danner and Nike were gearing shooters up with new footwear.

Image

Every night was kicked off the way anything and everything good is kicked off – with food! Delicious dinners were provided to everyone via a different sponsor every night. My hat goes off to Nike for sponsoring the dinner with the best potato salad on this side of the Mississippi.

Image

After dinner, the shooters were divided into groups that would rotate through the various stages. Shooting started at 21:30 each night, and went well into the dark hours of morning.

Image

All the stages had clever names that kept things lighthearted and interesting.

Image

Of course, there were shoot houses. If you’ve never shot a shoot house in the dark, you’re missing out!

Monsters come out at night…  (A shooter geared up to take on the shoot house)

While Bend is beautiful, the desert was a little eerie. Especially the second evening.

Image

And what on earth could make lasers, red lights, and gunfire in the blackest of nights even more exciting? At about 01:00 of that second night (or should I say second morning?) a terrifying crash sounded overhead. That was when the lightning struck, reaching across the sky with its long, bony fingers in a flash. That storm was by far, the most exciting and yet scary storm I had ever witnessed. Some were worried that the flashes of light were giving shooters advantages, or disadvantages; but I didn’t care. I just wanted to stay in that moment, surrounded by pure atmospheric chaos and blasting gunfire.

The thunder and lightning storm wasn’t nature’s only obstacle throughout these two nights:  we also endured rain, temperatures below freezing, and wind. Needless to say, the shooters’ gear, skill, and determination  were all well -tested.

I’d like to thank Lewis Danielson (CEO of CTC) for bringing me cold-weather gear for the event. His generosity kept me nice and toasty when otherwise I would have been freezing my rear end off.

Image

Match Results:

Grand Champion (and winner of the $10,000): SSGT Daniel Horner of the USAMU

Top Junior : Hayden Hixon
Top Lady: Kay Miculek

Some interesting facts about the match scores:

– SSGT Daniel Horner’s shootng partner, Taylor Payne (also of the USAMU), won third place.

–  There was a mathematical error during the scoring process, and another junior shooter was mistakenly named the winner of Top Junior. Although this error was corrected – Colt Competition really stepped up to the plate and allowed the original named Top Junior to keep the rifle he was awarded, and provided another one for Hayden Hixon.

Image

The completely awesome thing about a midnight match is that it takes place in the middle of the night and wee hours of the morning. On the flip –side; the completely exhausting thing about a midnight match is that it takes place in the middle of the night and the wee hours of the morning. I got approximately four hours of sleep Monday and Tuesday night, but oddly enough, I didn’t care!  I am convinced that this bitter-sweet was an evil plan devised by Crimson Trace to push our limits and force an addiction to nights filled with intense stimulation and fun .  Oh yeah, and to get us hooked on their lasers… which everyone was, by the time everything was said and done.

Overall, I think the entire event was a success. Everyone was raving (albeit between  yawns and with dark circles under their eyes) about how much fun it was, how great the event staff was, and how much they can’t wait for next year.  I told Lewis Danielson (the CEO of Crimson Trace), that he really doesn’t have much of a choice, CTC is now trapped into this shindig. Nobody will let them get away with skipping out on it next year.

Speaking of next year: I’m hoping that I can get some sponsors and some three gun training so that next time I can shoot it with my carbine instead of my camera.

Some of you heard about  my little mishap in one of the out-houses. The door locked from the outside when I went in, and I was locked inside for a short while. Below is a picture of that out-house.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN : THE ORGANIZATION AND HOLSTER LINE-UP AT THE CC HOLSTER FASHION SHOW

While the first annual concealed carry holster fashion show was huge hit both in person and online, it wasn’t without a huge amount of preparation. In January of this year Trish Cutler had an idea, she emailed me and I knew right away that she was on to something really special. After seven months of intense networking, organization, coordination, and with help of many of other people – it became a reality. Trish told me that she was so busy planning the event, that her husband hadn’t eaten a home-cooked meal in months. This amazing woman juggled a phone on each ear for the last three days before the show.

Image

Regrettably, the 2,769 miles between Trish and me kept me from being able to help much with the logistics. I was, however, able to help through promotion of the event. I sent out various press releases, did some networking, and pushed the event on social media as well as on local and national radio.

Many of you are aware that I was at the Crimson Trace Midnight 3-Gun Invitational in the days leading up to the fashion show. I left home on the Saturday prior to the fashion show, and didn’t get home from the invitational until Wednesday night. The completely awesome, and yet extremely exhausting thing about a midnight match is that it is in the middle of the night. So between factory tours and the match itself, I got about four hours of sleep per night. Wednesday evening I got home, did some laundry, and re-packed for my o’dark – thirty flight to NY in the morning. At 4:00 AM I was up again,  inhaling all the Starbucks I could wrap my hands around,  and beating feet to the airport. Running on nothing by pure, unadulterated caffeine, and fumes of excitement still left over from the invitational, somehow I managed to board my flight and survive a layover.

As soon as I touched down at Bradley, the real pressure was on! I had less than 48 hours to sift through a huge pile of holsters, get the models fitted, rehearse the runway, decide what order they were going to come out in, and coordinate the demos. With more late nights and early mornings, we finally got everything ironed out. Luckily I had the assistance of an awesome instructor from Philly, Annette Evans. Her expertise greatly aided in keeping things running smoothly.

One thing that I was adamant about was putting only quality products up on the runway. There were at least fifty holsters that were lent to us, but that we didn’t use. I could not, in good faith, recommend them to anyone or promote them. While not all the methods of carry represented in the fashion show are methods I would recommend, it felt it was important to show the different variations available for women.

And now that I have a little less hair, a few more hours of sleep to catch up on, and a great pride for what we have accomplished: let’s get down to business.

Like I said, the event was  a huge success. I am so thankful to everyone who played a hand in making this happen!  I can tell you that I really fell in love withe the food, culture, and people of New York. Boarding that flight home was truly a bitter-sweet experience.

FIRST ANNUAL CONCEALED CARRY HOLSTER FASHION SHOW SLIDE SHOW

Since this is such a hot topic right now I decided to go ahead and post a slide show that Armed Candy graciously made of the event! Tomorrow I will have a detailed list of the holsters up for you.

HEELS AND HOLSTERS – AN OVERVIEW OF THE CC HOLSTER FASHION SHOW

Image

Kitty Richards’ awesome gun heels

Although all the hype about  the Concealed Carry Holster Fashion Show was primarily about the runway show itself, there was really much more to the event than just heels and holsters.  In fact, there was an entire day and evening of education available for women interested in responsible firearm ownership and use

Some notes about the event :

  • The purpose of the event was to educate, empower and enable safe and responsible firearm ownership
  • Tickets sold out in advance – we expect a larger group next year!
  • Around 250 people attended the event
  • All of our models were gun-friendly volunteers who dedicated ample time to make the runway show happen
  • The local Fox news showed up and did a piece on the event. It can be seen here http://www.fox23news.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoid=3655184
  • Proceeds from event went to the REACH Center of Columbia and Greene counties – a center that helps victims of crime and abuse
  • Around two dozen holsters were showcased on the runway
  • The event was sponsored by Tri-Village Rod and Gun Club
  • Three Top Shot contestants, representatives from the NRA, and local firearm instructors were among many of our attendees

Saturday, July 21st at 09:00 we kicked off the day right by putting rounds downrange  at  a women’s shooting workshop put on by Tri-Village Rod and Gun Club in Valatie, NY. Women came from near and far to work one on one with instructors at the club and professionals such Gabby Franco and Frank Melloni.  Of course, I helped out too.

Image

Image

Image

With the beautiful Trish Cutler (the mastermind behind the entire fashion show event) at the shooting workshop.

By 17:30 the doors opened at the firehouse banquet hall in Hudson, NY.  The first order of business was to offer our guests the opportunity talk to several different vendors. From self-defense instructors and tools, to ammunition themed jewelry, and tee shirts: we had a little something for everybody.

Image

After dinner, IDPA queen, Kitty Richards introduced the speakers and kept the crowd on their toes.

Image

We were fortunate enough to get a handful of fantastic guest speakers who talked on everything from the Second Amendment to the importance of training. All of the Top Shot guests present gave inspiring speeches and testimonials as well.

Gabby Franco talked about how she got into shooting, growing up in Venezuela, and why she moved to the USA (I’ll give you a hint, it has to do with the Second Amendment). Gabby has been competing for several years and has even shot in the Olympics!

Image

Gabby recently became a full-fledged a U.S. citizen, which is awesome because she is probably one of the most patriotic people I know. This gal is red, white and blue – through and through.

The runway show itself was complete hit. The models did a fantastic job, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of women to work with.  It was such an honor and a pleasure to host the runway event. I gave a short speech to the effect of my  “THE HEART OF THE MATTER”  article, then dived right into explaining the demos and announcing the models and holsters. Now I know what it’s like to be Ryan Seacrest ;-).

Image

Annette Evans, Myself, and Keith Gibson. What are they all laughing at?

We showcased about two dozen different holsters, and many of them were designed specifically for women. Check back soon for a complete list of the holsters!

Image

One of the most important parts of the show was showing women not only how to carry a firearm in different types of holsters, but how to safely holster and draw their firearms as well. Annette Evans, an active firearms instructor and competitor on the East coast gave demonstrations on how to draw from the different configurations.

Image

After the runway event there were a few more speeches and a demo on key batons. The night ended on a good note, and I think just about everyone had as much fun attending the event as we had putting it together.

I did happen to run into these lovely lady gun bloggers as well:

LIVING IT UP AT CRIMSON TRACE MEDIA DAYS

Image

Saturday night, my husband, Dave and I checked in to Hotel 50 in downtown Portland, Oregon to kick off the Crimson Trace Media Days. After meeting up with Shelley Rae from Western Shooting Journal, we headed down to Portland City Grill for happy hour and dinner with the media group as well some really great reps from Nike, Otis, Danner, and of course Iain and the gang from Crimson Trace. Leatherman was kind enough to sponsor our dinner and drinks and provide us each with a LED LENSER P3 flashlight. Thanks, Leatherman!

Sunday was spent at Albany Rifle & Pistol Club. I tried my hand at some 3 gun drills  for the first time in my life and had a blast (thanks to Iain Harrison for putting up with all my questions). It’s something I could really see myself getting much more into. More on this first escapade to come!

Image

There were some manufacturer booths at the event which made for some serious considerations for my next retail therapy session. I’ll be doing full work-ups on many of the manufacturers/products shown here, consider this a preview. Please note that I’m not going to lie to you, my dear readers. My enthusiasm seen in the pictures is legit – CTC got some real quality manufacturers out here who are working with some fascinating, cutting-edge technology.

One of the things I was really eager to try out, and am now eager to purchase when it makes it to the market, was a sweet new .308 from Colt featuring a really neat adjustable gas block. Many of you already know how much I love the .308 round, but I’m really looking forward to having the ability to adjust the gas block in mere seconds to help cut back on recoil.

Image

Image

3 awesome girls, 3 awesome Colt rifles. With Annie Foster from Colt and Shelley Rae

I was all sorts of excited about the Danner booth, as I am a loyal Danner customer. Their boots are super comfortable and not too in your face, hardcore.  And, let’s be honest for a moment here… I’m a woman, and Danner is a shoe booth, it was only natural for my girly side to seep through a bit.

Image

Otis blew me away with their innovative cleaning systems. It’s like discovering the fun of gun cleaning all over again.

Image

Flir showed up with some pretty dang amazing  infrared cameras that made me seriously consider selling my car so that I could afford to purchase one. Don’t let my comment scare you away though, I just happen to have my heart set on the $12,000 model. They’ve got some gear for significantly less than that.

Image

Crimson Trace had a booth there with lasers rigged up onto blue guns. I was reminded once again how much I’d like a laser rig for each and every one of my firearms. They also had this…

Next up – Crimson Trace 3-Gun Midnight Invitational match… stay tuned!

TAKING A STAND ON THE UN ARMS TREATY

This is not a political blog, the second amendment is for everybody, despite their political views. The right to choose whether or not to own firearm does not discriminate. The right to defend one’s self does not discriminate.  It’s about having the ability and the freedom to make a choice.

There are people who are attacking that right, that freedom to make a choice. The NRA’s stance here is right on and  it makes me proud.

GRACIE MCKEE IS PACKING PRETTY – THE WHOLE STORY

I know the electronic version of this story has gone out already on Facebook and twitter, but the electronic version leaves out a lot.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about – Sue Vorenberg , a features writer at the Columbain wrote a Sunday feature on me last weekend. I have to admit, I am both proud and humbled by what was said about me, and would like to share it with you today.

Click the picture below to be directed to the entire article, and click “continuation” at the top of the page when you are ready for the next page.

I would like to thank Sue Vorenberg, Chris Dowart, and the Columbain for putting this together. I would also like to thank both Michael Jones ( one of my NRA Training Counselors and good friend) as well as Mary T. (a former student and fantastic woman) for taking the time to say nice things about me.

WHY CALEB WOULD WALK 500 MILES AND OTHER GREAT READS

I have been traveling a lot lately – and that’s not about to stop until the end of July when I return home from the Concealed Carry Holster Fashion Show in Hudson, NY. That doesn’t mean I’m done traveling for the year, just that things will slow down a bit for me. I apologize for how infrequent my articles have been as of late due to my hectic schedule.

I am hoping to have a holster review up for you this week (fingers crossed), so please keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, please enjoy these great articles by other bloggers and writers.
