Sitting in Bible study, the words struck into my heart.
“They were so focused on what they had lost that they couldn’t see what they had gained, even afterwards.”
She was referring to the followers of Jesus.
Luke 24:13-24 KJV
[13] And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. [14] And they talked together of all these things which had happened. [15] And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. [16] But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. [17] And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? [18] And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? [19] And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: [20] and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. [21] But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. [22] Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; [23] and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. [24] And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
Thankfully, Jesus not only walked with these two, He instructed.
Luke 24:25-27 KJV
[25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: [26] ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? [27] And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
My friend’s words continued to resonate within my soul.
“How often have I done that Lord?!?”
I didn’t need an answer.
“Too often.”
But just like the two men on the road to Emmaus, Jesus is walking with me; instructing, correcting my perspective, comforting me, through His Word and Holy Spirit.
Luke 24:32-36 KJV
[32] And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? [33] And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, [34] saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. [35] And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. [36] And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
Just as these two men were encouraged through their time with Christ, they knew that their experience was too valuable to not share, thus they retraced their steps and returned to Jerusalem finding not only the blessing of sharing what had been their own experience, but being encouraged through the experience of another.
No wonder the Scriptures tell us not to forsake the assembly of ourselves together, for we are to encourage and exhort one another in our walk with our Savior.
Hebrews 10:23-25 KJV
[23] Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) [24] and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
What a joy it is to be reminded of that which is best.
Yes, those who followed Christ had experienced incredibly heartbreaking loss, but the point was that He rose, as He said He would, and with that Resurrection grant each who believe eternal life.
No matter what loss we experience here on earth, we have a future and a hope through Jesus Christ and He promises to work good
Romans 8:28 NKJV — And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Therefore, no matter the loss experienced, we need to focus on Christ and trust Him to work through it for our good and His glory.
Colossians 3:16 KJV — Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your Word! Thank You for Your faithfulness and how You use that which is so challenging as an opportunity. Lord, thank You that You chose to lose that we might gain. Please continue to help me focus on the right thing and to rejoice continually in Your salvation. Lord, may those who know You let the Your Word dwell richly within them. Let us teach and admonish one another, continually singing Your praises in our hearts and may our mouths be filled with Your wondrous works. For our good and Your glory! Amen.
