small details that make the difference

17 01 2009

changing a car’s color produces a quite remarkable effect, especially if the car is old/classic etc. mine used to be bordeaux (sweet bordeaux as the previous owner described it…) and now it is “gun metal gray” and it is obviously an entirely different car.

apart from the new color that will certainly draw anyone’s attention, it is the small details that will distinguish your car or anything else in your life (such as your home, career, job project) as time passes.

so, pay some extra attention (and cash) in some small (and some times maybe bigger) parts in order to rejuvenate your car (or home, career, job project) !

what if

the car’s color turned out to be a big surprise as it was an unexpectedly good “accident”. however, before applying the varnish, the car looked completely different, as it was drawn out of a Mad Max movie…

the only question remaining is what if I could drive around my car without the varnish (and the protection it provides). it is my personal opinion that it looks better this way. see for yourselves

more than meets the eye

7 01 2009

a car restoration is a procedure that provides it’s owner with some insight regarding the love he has for his car (always in the case where the owner is actually involved in the restoration process ).that is because during a restoration certain issues arise that the owner may had never thought of, such as the color choice. one may say “ok black is fine” but think again, which black…?

as the time approached for me to choose the color of my car I had to do an extensive search in the internet to see similar restoration projects for the specific car in order to rule out some colors that I didn’t like at all. so, even though I always used to say that “black is cool cause I ‘ve seen it on a 1966 ford mustang GT“, the truth is that I didn’t really like it when I saw a black celica while browsing flickr. after that, it was time to review all the classic car colors while keeping in mind that the exterior color had to match with the interior colors (for example it’s hideous to have a brown interior while the exterior color is navy blue…)

after having reviewed for hundreds of times endless color catalogs I ended up in three basic colors and it was time for experimentation: we actually painted a door with these three colors so as to get an idea of what the car will look like in the end

needless to say that the final color was an accident. I was going for the sand gray and Vaggelis (remember, the guy who painted it) accidentally used another code while mixing the colors and the final was called “gun metal gray”…

I don’t know the real reason for chosing this color but thinking it over now it seems like a good choice. after all I can always change it after 5 or 6 years! (yeah right…)

and a happy new year !

we should always pay attention to the small details, just like when you select a present for someone you love. a gift doesn’t have to be extremely expensive to be good, it should only be carefully selected. the same goes with a car restoration: you don’t have to spend tons of dollars in unnecessary tasks that produce an astounding but temporary result (for example many people tend to use very expensive paint with 3 layers of varnish, while the chassis is not properly trimmed; as a result the paint bursts a few years later).

merry christmas

25 12 2008

several days ago I decided it was time to wash my car and I believe it is a good opportunity to give you my great (…) knowledge on matters concerning exterior car wash

the rules you have to follow in order to preserve the brilliance of the car’s color are quite simple

1. try to wash your car at home with your own (and carefully selected) shampoos and sponges (don’t use spongebob squarepants if possiblebob)

2. avoid automatic washing machines because their brushes  damage the paint and the varnish

3. occasionally remove any “littering” that comes from birds etc (believe it or not it is highly toxic!)

4. avoid extreme sun exposure

5. use lubricants for the rubbers and the trims

6. and for god sake, don’t wash your car every once and a while because this tactic also results in paint and varnish fading…

enjoy your Christmas rides !!

there is still much to be written but I had an artistic inspiration, after the latest top gear show with the 1968 Ferrari Daytona…

retro look

despite the mechanical problems every once and a while, the joy you get from driving it is superb !

mine is not a ferrari, but it the feeling is just the same as Hammond’s… he couldn’t describe it better… !

see the folowing video and you ‘ll see what I mean… (just pump up the volume and enjoy!)

one step too far

after the trimming of the rust it was time for pounding and welding (the rear left wheel arch was torn as a truck had hit me at the beginning of the summer)

second step (and some more along the way)

5 12 2008

as time went by, the car looked more and more as it was left in a junkyard, ready to go and meet its maker…

but one day the windshields finally came off, not with magic …. and mr Stefanos begun the actual and most difficult part of the restoration procedure; he had to trim any spot that had rust and replace it with new metal. actually it is a lot harder to do than it sounds. even I… didn’t dare to try it (to be honest they, mr Stefanos and his son Vangelis, the professionals I was talking about the other day didn’t allow me to be near the premises, during that part of the restoration procedure), but I was cunning enough to shoot a video….

for those with second thoughts

28 11 2008

I am not an engineer…

I am not a tinsmith…

I had never dedicated more than half an hour for any task concerning my car…

I had no experience on matters concerning trimming/de-rusting/applying filler/rubbing/smoothing etc (…not that I have gained any practical experience after all these… sigh…)

however it wasn’t like I didn’t know how to change a bulb… I can adeptly assemble any IKEA item… hahahahaha not to mention home-improvements… hahahaahha (again)

my point is that I know that I am NOT a professional in cars and for that reason I assigned the whole restoration project to a proper professional, who happened to be a friend of mine. the reason I chose a friend for this task and not a complete stranger is that I started the project as a hobby and not as something that had to be done. and for that reason I wanted to enjoy the entire process, which can be very demanding at some times

to conclude: you don’t have to be a professional in order to see your car as it came out of the factory – there are people called professionals who will do all the hard work and actually get paid for this…!!

all you have to do is to be willing to sacrifice some of your precious tv/internet/shop-in-the-mall time and engage in the restoration process. believe it or not it is very likely that you’ll enjoy it after all.

and for those of you who read all this crap excruciatingly and with the hope I mentioned anything more specific about the progress of the restoration, please be my guests…
