Chapter 4
Surreal.
For the first time in her life Sabrina was truly experi- encing the meaning of that word. None of what was hap- pening felt as if it was real, as if it was happening—
—in her life.
—in her city.
—to her community.
But the pictures flashing across the screen in all their
seven-inch glory were actually real.
Huddled next to John, her eyes glued to the screen,
Sabrina felt an overabundance of emotion tighten her stomach and race up her spine to lodge in her heart.
Her city was flooded.
Not just flooded, it was drowning in devastation and there didn’t seem to be a life preserver within reach.
New Orleans was drowning and people were suf- fering. Its people were the heart of the city and Sabrina watched as the city’s pulse became more and more erratic.
She couldn’t tear her eyes away from the miniature screen as one horrific scene after another flashed before her eyes.
